Binge Eating: Is Sugar/Food Addiction Real?10 Jun 202200:09:58

In this episode I jump between the terms "Sugar Addiction" and "Food Addiction", and it's no accident! Sugar Addiction" refers to the finger being pointed at sugar alone, while "Food Addiction" is the idea that certain foods containing specific combinations of macronutrients are more problematic. Though, there are holes in arguments for both, and definitely things to be aware of when throwing around certain terms too liberally.

Almost every conversation I have about binge eating recovery comes with this question in one form or another "When can I start losing weight again?!"... and "After recovery,  are you still in good shape?"... Well, I'm embracing it, and giving you an answer if you dare to hear it!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Eating disorders can be life threatening. Not all of the advice I give is going to be relevant for everyone, and this is not a substitute for medical advice.

The information in this episode is primarily for people struggling with binge eating as a direct result of restrictive diets. Despite my own history with bulimia, the things that I’ve done and described in this episode have happened many years after bulimia became a thing of the past for me.

What happens when discipline backfires?

What happens when we drive ourselves into burnout, eating disorders, and struggles with mental health?

When people used to talk with me about developing a better relationship with myself, and better relationship with food, I rejected those ideas because I was scared to lose my discipline which at the time I thought was my greatest asset. 

I believed my ability to force myself through challenges was the best thing about me.

My physical and mental health was suffering, and my career and financial stability was completely shot, yet the idea of being kinder to myself was something I continued to reject because I didn’t believe being kinder to myself would produce great results. 

I thought that If I lost that internal fire that was driving me, I’d be losing a part of myself. 

This is something that comes up in todays episode of the M. Kain Coaching Podcast as Dr Madison and I talk about developing a better relationship with ourselves, and how that can benefit rather than detract from everything that we’re working for and passionate about.

In this episode I chat with my friend Jason - @orthorexiabites - about orthorexia and his journey of discovery and recovery. 


Orthorexia is defined as an unhealthy focus on eating in a healthy way. When suffering with orthorexia, lot of emphasis begins to be placed on avoiding certain foods (often a growing list) in the name of optimal health to the point of a detrimental impact on mental health. Bulimia, Drugs, and Rock 'N' Roll... My story. 25 Sep 202100:28:58

In previous episodes I’ve referenced my experiences with bulimia, binge eating disorder, and body dysmorphia, but I’ve never really told the full story of how it developed, and how I broke the cycle and recovered. I’m going to tell you the full story in this episode, with the hope that it will encourage some of us to take a second look at our relationship with food, exercise, and how we view our bodies.

Anxiety and Training - How to make it work!09 Sep 202100:09:45

Anxiety is unfortunately extremely common, and as we talked about in episode 3, it’s something that can leave us feeling extremely drained due to the toll that frequent or prolonged anxiety has on the body. 

It can leave us feeling physically and mentally burnt out even when we haven’t done much of what we might consider to be strenuous physical work. And as a result of anxiety or a stressful period in your life, you might have experienced what it’s like to show up for a workout feeling depleted and unable to perform at your best.

It’s important to mention here that anxiety can take shape as many different things. A history of trauma and genetic predisposition are factors, though today’s episode also applies for those of us who might be under a lot of pressure, juggling a lot of responsibilities, and working to keep our head above water during difficult times. 

So what we’re going to talk about today are some strategies that make workouts achievable, so you can still know that you’ve ticked the boxes for a successful workout, even if you’re not feeling your best. Because contrary to popular belief, the best workouts and training sessions aren’t always the hardest ones.
