97. Keys to Leadership at a Brewery (& Everywhere Else Too): Clarity, Recognition, and Grit with Inez Ribustello19 Oct 202200:28:09

Our guest for this episode, Inez Ribustello, provides a unique perspective from an industry that we haven't yet talked about and she has an incredible story of passion, tragedy, and grit to share with us.

But in the end, you'll see the leadership lessons that she has to share are not just applicable in the food and beverage industry. They apply to any leadership experience in which you are engaged.

About Inez
Inez Ribustello got her start in the world of food and wine after moving to New York City from her home state of North Carolina. Her wine career took a huge leap forward when she became an Assistant Cellar Master at Windows on the World in One World Trade Center. In a very short time, she was promoted to Beverage Director.

After losing her job and her work family on 9/11, Inez chose to eventually move back to her hometown with her fiancé Stephen. Together they opened their own restaurant, wine bar and retail store called On the Square.

Inez' next big venture was Tarboro Brewing Company, a microbrewery that began operating in 2016. Almost a year later, she and her husband opened a satellite taproom in a neighboring town. Stephen and Inez have two children that they absolutely adore.

In September of 2021, Inez self-published her memoir Life After Windows, a book she wrote chronicling her journey from North Carolina to Manhattan.

96. Others Over Self® Leadership with Shelly Rood12 Oct 202200:53:28

Are you a leader who cares about serving others, especially those who have served your country?

With our guest, Shelly Rood, we begin by talking about how to honor and work most effectively with those who sacrifice so much for us, those who serve in our armed forces.  Hint:  It goes way beyond (but doesn't take much more effort than) saying "thank you for your service."

We talk about the different military cultures and the values that make former military members stellar employees.  If you lead someone who served you'll leave with new leadership insights.

Our conversation then broadens to topics that are important for any leader:

  • The value of staying curious
  • How to walk the fine line of putting others needs first without slipping into dangerous self-sacrifice
  • What real self-care is
  • The power of peer support groups
  • The value of grounding yourself in self-knowledge before jumping into giving mode
  • The power of letting others give to you

Trigger warning:  We do briefly discuss suicide statistics and abuse.  Please take care of yourself and come back to this episode at a different time if needed.

About Shelly
From being overseas and leading covert intelligence briefings to orchestrating security programs for nearly 4,000  soldiers, our guest Shelly Rood knows first hand what it means to protect and care for others. Through Others Over Self®, Shelly and her team are dedicated to serving others by providing training that connect people through shared life experiences and deepen interpersonal skills, all while celebrating our nation’s heroes.

She has built a magnetic community and business around an activity that a good portion of our population hates to do…run.

Introducing Season 3 of Moms that Lead16 Aug 202200:02:02

Welcome to Season 3 of the Moms that Lead podcast!  If you're a long-time listener, you know that we believe that our leadership journeys cycle through three phases, Ground, Grow and Give.

The Ground phase is about helping you to recognize and own your leadership strengths…the outcome of that phase is clarity.  And the second phase is the Grow phase, where you hone those strengths, with the outcome being greater confidence.

We've lived in those two phases for most of the episodes of seasons 1 and 2.  So for season 3, we're going to spend most of our time in the incredibly important 3rd phase…Give.  The Give phase, when you connect with others, is what, by definition, makes you a leader.

After all, you can't really be a leader if you don’t inspire others to follow and develop to their full potential.  I believe that is the purpose of leadership…to grow other leaders by doing the messy work of connecting with other humans with all of our emotions, experiences, idiosyncrasies and beauty.  It's not easy work, but whether your developing your kids, volunteers in your community, or your colleagues at work…it can be incredibly rewarding.

I’m excited to bring you wise and insightful guests that dig into the tough people leadership topics…like how can we support our tween and teen's mental health, how to lead someone who's grieving, how to lead a team when you're building a company, how to lead in a blended family, how to select team members to build a high performance team and so much more.

74. How to Create Wealth by Starting on the Inside with Michelle Arpin Begina23 Feb 202200:48:02

Financial wellbeing is about so much more than knowing where and how you should invest your money.

Our guest today, author, speaker, and advisor, Michelle Arpin Begina believes that  it all starts inside and you have what you need to succeed and thrive in terms of your financial wellbeing…it's just a matter of doing the introspection and reflection on your past experience. Like so many things in leadership, it starts with knowing your values.

Not only do we discuss tips for doing that introspection and defining what Michelle calls your unique success formula, but we also talk about:
• What it means to be wealthy
• Why  financial wellbeing is important for leaders
• How we can help our children have a good relationship with money

About Michelle
Michelle’s earliest memories from childhood all relate to money. And yet, the
stories and lessons learned from different branches of her family tree couldn’t be
more dichotomous! Michelle has used the money lessons from her life to rethink
how financial advisors and their clients have traditionally worked together. Rather
than thinking of her role as a gatekeeper of portfolios, she sees real value in
being a gateway to personal financial freedom. To support her clients on their
unique wealth journeys, Michelle is a technician of financial planning, investment,
and wealth management. But what differentiates Michelle from other financial
advisors is that she has spent the last two-plus decades studying the unconventional,
non-financial aspects of life satisfaction, financial therapy (it’s a thing),
behavioral bias, choice, and decision advising.

She believes we all need to examine the money stories, scripts, and lessons that
affect our financial psychology so that we can rethink what we know about money
to have more of it. Michelle lives in Wyckoff, NJ with her husband, Mike and sons,
Alex and Nick. She is an avid photographer – her sons are her favorite subject!

73. The Gender Leadership Gap & What To Do About It with Tara Schwegler16 Feb 202200:53:52

Why do talented women all over the world doubt that they are leaders?

What are our communities missing out on as women self-select out of leadership opportunities, harming their career wellbeing?

We answered these questions with Dr. Tara Schwegler and also talked about:

  • cultural factors that are keeping women from seeing themselves as leaders
  • the actions that we can take to better understand and step into leadership
  • the changes that need to happen in our society so that we don't miss out on the community-changing talents that women possess

About Tara

Tara Schwegler is a cultural anthropologist, writer, professor, and entrepreneur on a mission to get more working moms into leadership positions. After earning her PhD from the University of Chicago, she worked in the academic and corporate sectors, where she experienced firsthand the challenges of balancing family with leadership aspirations. She has published widely in major academic journals and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she teaches classes on women’s leadership, the anthropology of food, and any other fun topics she can dream up! In addition, she is the co-founder of RedSquared Consulting, a women-led customer experience consulting firm that advises corporate, non-profit, and municipal clients on how to enhance their customer experience with insights.

Having adapted to changing life circumstances throughout her career, Tara is an expert in rethinking career paths and moving forward, even when the path isn't clear. She recently completed a book manuscript, Set Up to Fail: Why Women Lean Out and What We Can Do About It, which argues that the gender leadership gap is the product of outdated cultural assumptions about work.

She offers simple (but not easy) steps to follow to journey through that experience, highlighting the value of a focus on your social wellbeing and the power of having what she calls radical friends.

70. The Power of Storytelling to Make You a Better Leader with Juliet Hahn26 Jan 202200:50:50

Finding your purpose and retaining employees are two top-of-mind topics for leaders during this Great Resignation.

In our conversation with Juliet Hahn we uncover the power of storytelling in both efforts, as we dig into Juliet's personal story and that of the women (including many wives of NFL players) that she interviews for her podcast series, YNS Live with NFL Thread.

About Juliet:
Juliet Hahn is a storyteller, consultant, keynote speaker and content creator.  Her mission in life is to give Women and Men a stage to share their stories.  She believes deeply that everyone has a story and we all can learn from each other.  We just need to listen.

Your Next Stop and YNS Live highlights people who have followed a purpose/passion and made it into a career. These shows are inspiring and will get you thinking! YNS live with NFL Thread a series within YNS Live dives deep to understand who NFL women are and what motivates them. YNS Live chips away at the perception of NFL women and showcases their talents, initiatives and missions.

Your Next Stop Workshop was born directly from season 2 of Your Next Stop Podcast. Juliet wants to help people tap into their creative passion and turn that into a career.
Juliet is also passionate about helping people be able to tell their own stories. To connect their story to their own careers.  Stories connect people.

Juliet and her husband Dan call Remsenburg, New York their home.  Their three children and two boxers, love living in this beautiful beach community and love being part of Juliet’s Crazytown.

69. Lead From Right Where You Are with Sarah K. Peck19 Jan 202200:48:23

Episode AKA "Yes, You CAN Lead with Baby Barf On Your Sweater"

You don't have to change who you are (or how much laundry you got done last week) to be an effective leader.  We need you to lead now, just as you are.

In my conversation with Sarah K. Peck of StartUp Parent and host of the StartUp Parent Podcast, we dig into this truth as well as:

  • Sarah's (naked) swim from Alcatraz to raise $33K for charity (Brrrr!)
  • Behind-the-scenes of building a business
  • Critical leadership skills that are learned from parenting
  • The big component that your morning routine is likely missing
  • The value of being part of a community of leaders
  • How to have more of an impact while working less
  • Creative and kind ways set boundaries and to say "no"

About Sarah:
Sarah K Peck is the founder and CEO of Startup Parent and the host of The Startup Parent Podcast, an award-winning podcast featuring women in entrepreneurship, business, and parenting. She runs The Wise Women’s Council, an annual leadership program for women to come together honestly while navigating the challenges of working and parenting.

Sarah’s professional career started in environmental psychology and the design of environments. She pursued a Bachelors of Arts in psychology and a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Design. She worked as an associate on international design projects of the built environment before charting out a path in media and communications to help change the way we talk about the world around us and how it influences our behavior and wellbeing. In 2011, Sarah began consulting with Y-Combinator backed startups, and launched her own consultancy in 2013. Today, she’s the CEO and founder of Startup Parent, a company focused on the narratives we share (and the ones we don’t share) about work, parenting, and motherhood.

Sarah is also a 20-time NCAA All-American swimmer and has successfully swum the Escape from Alcatraz nine separate times, once doing the swim totally naked as way to raise $33k for charity: water. Her writing and work have been featured on Forbes, Inc, Fast Company, The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and more. She lives in New York City with her family.
