STNH 48: Jules Galloway - Thyroid Testing: What you need to know28 Nov 202200:21:02

This is the first of what will be occasional episodes about common health issues we see in practice. Beware - Jules may get a little ranty/sweary at times as she goes over how to spot the symptoms, how to test, why your doctor didn't pick it up, and what to do about it.

In this episode, she is talking about hypothyroidism and what to do if your doctor says you're fine but you've still got all the symptoms. You may be feeling some of the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Feeling the cold easily
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Puffiness
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain/weakness
  • Hair loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Memory issues
  • Difficulty finding words
  • Heavy periods

Jules will go into the basics and limitations of thyroid testing and why the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) test does not pick up 100% of hypothyroidism cases. She chats about which tests to do instead, how to get them done, and why seeing a Naturopath is the logical next step when you can't find answers through the medical system.

STNH 38: Rhiannon Hardingham – Fertility in a post Covid world05 Jun 202200:58:19

Rhiannon Hardingham has become a leader in her field of all things fertility, reproductive health and IVF support. I've been super excited to watch her go from strength to strength, because we actually went to college together, 20 years ago. (Yep – 20 years!). She's a naturopath, and she had one of the brightest minds in our year level (pretty sure she shat all over me in biochemistry). She's gone on to become a clinician and also a speaker and author in her niche. So I thought she'd be the perfect person to speak to about navigating reproductive health in a post pandemic world.

In this episode we will cover:

  • How the pandemic has affected fertility and IVF treatment.
  • The effects of stress on reproductive health.
  • How to address anxiety during IVF.
  • The effect that Covid infection is having on male fertility (don't miss this – it's actually kinda scary!).
  • Why sperm count rates have halved in the last 40 years.
  • The different types of semen analysis (and why you want a high quality one).
  • Supplements to support male fertility.
  • Rhiannon's favourite immune boosting herb that you can take alongside IVF treatment.

SHY 20: Cyndi O'Meara – What's with wheat? Why we need to ditch chemicals in food27 Sep 201601:08:40

This week's guest is a nutritionist, author, passionate speaker and now filmmaker, with her recent documentary "What's with Wheat" going totally gangbusters.

Cyndi O'Meara has done the hard yards, collating the research, studying the effects that pesticides and chemicals have on our bodies… and it's time to reveal the dirty truth. She is on a mission to create a "tsunami of change" and definitely pulls no punches!

In this episode, Cyndi will give you tools to create a healthier community and provide safer food options for the generations to come. Listen and become motivated to create small step after small step, towards a vibrant, chemical free life where we can all flourish.

Be blown away by Cyndi's backstory, where she reveals her motivation for decades of research and campaigning (hint: her family weren't the healthiest bunch!). Listen to her story of her transition from nutritionist to farmer, and how she manifested her dream to grow organic produce.

Find out the truth about glyphosate ("Round Up"), and it's far-reaching effects on the environment, our health and our biochemistry.

We also chat about getting past the overwhelm, and how to make changes from a mindset of awareness rather than fear.

If you want to leave this world (and our food industry!) in a better state for your children and your grandchildren, listen to this episode. If you ever wondered why you should spend the extra bucks on organic food, this podcast is a must.

As Cyndi says "We can't depend on our governments. we have to do it ourselves."

Strap yourself in – it's time to level up (don't worry – you're in good hands!). This is one episode of Shiny Healthy You that no health-conscious person can afford to miss.

Growing up in an Italian family, she has real food and home-style cooking etched into her DNA. But after living the rock n' roll lifestyle for many years, Cinzia had an awakening when it came to her health. She did a complete 180 and went off to study nutrition as a single mum at age 39 (wow!).

Cinzia brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to the table in this chat.

Meet Guy Lawrence. He owns a biz called 180 Nutrition, which makes great quality supplements for the fitness industry.

SHY 14: Lunch Lady Lou – Bringing healthy food to busy city women16 Aug 201600:49:53

Meet Linda Ellis (aka Lunch Lady Lou) – she is singlehandedly attempting to change the way that office workers do lunch in Sydney.

Although she grew up in a household that cooked meals from scratch, she didn't develop an interest in food until much later. After a stint working in a busy office, she discovered her new tag "The Healthy Salad Maker" and the rest just grew from there.

Having left the busy corporate world behind, she now delivers healthy lunches throughout the Sydney CBD, to a cult following of hungry workers.

But like any of my Shiny Healthy You guests, there's more to this story than just a yarn about healthy food. Listen to Lou as she chats about her run in with cancer, and the change in her mindset that ensued (and the weird and wonderful speed bumps along the way!).

Listen to her recount how she drew on her overseas trips for food inspiration, and the shift in perspective that came from comparing other food cultures to our own.

If you love to "nerd out" on food, hit play, sit back and enjoy!

Some of the quotes throughout this episode are pure GOLD!

"Eat this, it's full of flavour, it's made with love, and gonna make you smile."
"I just believe everyone should cook with love."
"You will feel like sunshine is coming out of you."
"Don't beat yourself up if you don't like kale."

YAY!!!

SHY 13: Rebecca Weller – A Happier Hour09 Aug 201600:40:48

Meet Rebecca (Bex) Weller, health coach, author, and creator of Sexy Sobriety, a program that helps women to reduce their alcohol intake.

Bex is a beacon of health and happiness these days, but it wasn't always this way.

From the days of her corporate "work hard, play harder" lifestyle, to turning vegan and giving up the booze, it's been a wild and crazy ride… so much so that she's even written a book!

In this podcast, you'll find out how Bex went from calorie counting, frozen dinners and "plastic foods" to eating a nourishing wholefood vegan diet. Discover the unexpected benefits she gained from eating gluten and dairy free (like saying bye bye to eczema and excess weight!). Listen as she shares her struggle with her final health frontier… alcohol… and be inspired by her successful mission to achieve 100 days of sobriety (and learn what she would do differently next time!).

Bex is the master of re-framing – in this interview she talks about cooking as a form of self-care, and how to distract yourself so that you're not focused on what you can't have.

If you're in the process of giving something up, whether it's alcohol, a particular food, or an unhealthy lifestyle or habit, there's so much GOLD in this interview just for you!

STNH 37: Daniel Baden – Long Covid and post viral fatigue29 May 202200:53:13

Meet Daniel Baden – an extremely well-known and respected name in the Australian naturopathic community.

He is a naturopath and homoeopath, and has also taken on many roles over the years including; working with industry regulatory committees, providing technical support to practitioners, assisting various groups in research projects, lecturer, author, and, possibly the role he's best known for, the co-founder and executive director of BioMedica Nutraceuticals.

He is a trusted speaker, with a "no stone left unturned" scientific approach to his research and presentations. He somehow manages to seamlessly blend traditional naturopathic philosophy with the latest cutting edge research. Which is why we love him, and why he's the perfect person to speak to about this episode's topic.

You see… there's been a "certain virus" on the loose for the last couple of years, and we're seeing a LOT of people pulling up super rough from it.

Now… in the naturopathic world, we've been banging on about something called post viral fatigue for decades… which means we already have plenty of tools and learnings that we can apply to the current situation. But this latest pandemic has really taken things up a notch. So let's pick Daniel's brain for some clinical GOLD.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • What exactly is post viral fatigue?
  • Who is susceptible to long Covid and post viral fatigue (and why?).
  • Which factors can predispose us to ongoing symptoms?
  • Why is Covid causing so many ongoing issues?
  • How Covid triggers inflammation (and what to do about it).
  • Things to consider when addressing long Covid (hint – it's not just about herbs and supplements!).
  • A little about other viruses that cause ongoing fatigue, like Epstein Barr (glandular fever).
  • Why the microbiome is so important when healing from a virus.

This is a fascinating blend of science and evidence-based info, with a wonderful heartfelt sprinkling of naturopathic philosophy throughout.

This episode is brought to you by BioMedica Nutraceuticals, an Australian owned natural health company dedicated exclusively to the needs of practitioners in clinical practice.  As The Practitioner Company, BioMedica are known for their dedication to preserving and enhancing the role of holistic practitioners by providing a range of high quality, efficacious practitioner-only products and comprehensive, unbiased educational resources and clinical tools. STNH 36: Sandeep Gupta – Mould Illness Made Simple22 May 202200:55:04

This year has been the wettest, most humid, and consequently the mouldiest EVERRRR on many parts of the east coast of Australia. Which means – the numbers of people with CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome), MCAS  (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) and mould illness are growing at an alarming rate.

Meet Sandeep Gupta – a board certified general practice physician practicing on Australia's Sunshine Coast (aka Mould Central right now!). He has a Fellowship and Masters degree in Nutritional & Environmental Medicine and five years experience of working in intensive care medicine. He runs a busy integrative medicine practice, Lotus Holistic Medicine, helping his patients to achieve optimal health and finding answers to complex medical problems.

He was the first non-US physician to complete the certification in biotoxin illness with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker in 2014, and is now leading the way in Australia as THE go-to doctor for mould illness, CIRS and MCAS.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • What are MCAS and CIRS.
  • The different types of illnesses that can result from mould exposure.
  • Pathology testing for mould and biotoxin related illness.
  • Mould illness treatment protocols.
  • Why looking at underlying emotional trauma is a MUST.
  • What to do when clients are highly inflamed from mould exposure.
  • How to find the right GP or practitioner to help you.

Dr Sandeep Gupta also has a course for those wanting to heal from mould illness. It's an amazing resource, and the perfect place to start for anyone affected by mould exposure.

It's called "Mold Illness Made Simple" (yep – it's the US spelling of "mold"), and you can check it out via my affiliate link here:

STNH 35: Rebecca Edwards – New natural solutions for mental health issues14 Dec 202100:53:17

Rebecca Edwards is so awesome that she has joined us for 3 consecutive episodes. When we were originally teeing up an interview, there were literally SO MANY amazing topics being thrown around that we couldn't choose just one.

Rebecca is a speaker, writer, educator, and qualified naturopath. She has more than fifteen years of experience educating on all aspects of complementary and integrative health. She has lectured to undergraduate students in Australia, the UK, and the US, and delivered naturopathic education to healthcare practitioners all round the world. She is also the Director of Education at Activated Probiotics, so she's across all the latest studies and research.

She is also a complete microbiome nerd, and passionate about educating people about all the far-reaching effects a healthy, or an unhealthy microbiome can have on the human body.

So over 3 episodes we have explored 3 health issues that can be affected by a poor microbiome, and we've been covering the latest research in how to manage them.

This week's topic is mental health, and how probiotics are being used to help.

We are currently experiencing an epidemic of anxiety, depression and mental health issues.

Over the last decade, we've learned so much from research into the gut-brain axis, and the importance of gut health in order to create good mental health. But there's so much more to it than that. Cue – going down the nerdy rabbit hole of probiotic research with Rebecca, and exploring the exciting world of strain-specific probiotics for targeted therapy.

In this episode we chat about the role of inflammation in anxiety, low mood and sleep disturbances, the role of the microbiome in mental health, and the latest research on which strains are the most effective in helping to improve symptoms.

A huge thanks to Activated Probiotics for sponsoring this episode.

STNH 34: Rebecca Edwards – Why we aren't absorbing iron… and what to do about it07 Dec 202101:01:10

Rebecca Edwards is so awesome that she will be joining us for 3 whole episodes. When we were teeing up an interview, there were literally SO MANY amazing topics being thrown around that we couldn't choose just one.

Rebecca is a speaker, writer, educator, and qualified naturopath. She has more than fifteen years of experience educating on all aspects of complementary and integrative health. So over 3 episodes we will be exploring 3 health issues that can be affected by a poor microbiome, and we'll talk about the latest research in how to manage them.

This week's topic is iron deficiency, especially in women.

Low iron is something that both doctors and naturopaths/nutritionists see a LOT of in clinic. And often, despite giving high doses of iron supplements, levels simply do not budge. It's so frustrating!

So… is it just about finding the "right" type of iron to give to the patient? Or is there something else going on?

Enter Rebecca and her incredible knowledge of the biochemistry of iron absorption, and the role of the microbiome (and targeted probiotic therapy) in helping turn the deficiency state around.

WARNING: This episode is pretty heavy on the tech side of things, (including a built-in biochemistry lesson, which plays out like a Disney movie!). So keep a pen and paper handy and switch off your other devices, so that you can pay this one your full attention.

(And practitioners – I KNOW you're going to love this one – so many clinical pearls in there!).

A huge thanks to Activated Probiotics for sponsoring this episode.

STNH 33: Rebecca Edwards – Saving Our Bones – The role of the microbiome in osteoporosis30 Nov 202100:56:59

She is also a complete microbiome nerd, and passionate about educating people about all the far-reaching effects a healthy, or an unhealthy microbiome can have on the human body.

So over next 3 episodes we will be exploring 3 health issues that can be affected by a poor microbiome, and we'll talk about the latest research in how to manage them.

And our first topic is bone density – yep – prevention of that pesky little sucker known as osteoporosis. Something ALL women… and men (especially those over 40) should be tuning in to learn about.

Did you know that Western women have a 50% lifetime risk of osteoporotic fractures? This is super common… and serious, because one the fracture has occurred, there's also an increased risk of mortality.

Yet… Rebecca says "Calcium supplements are overused in relation to the benefit they give." Say whattt?

Yep – there's new research coming out on the gut-bone axis – the direct line of communication between our digestion and our bones. And the role that inflammation plays in the increased breakdown of bones.

Cue – targeted probiotic therapy to improve gut health, reduce inflammation and slow down bone loss.

So tune in and nerd out with us and discover a new way of looking at not just osteoporosis, but also probiotics (it's not just about pumping in the 'good guys" into your gut – it's so much more than that!).

STNH 32: Kira Sutherland – Nutrition for active women23 Nov 202101:01:55

Meet Kira Sutherland – a highly experienced naturopath, sports nutritionist, and much-loved lecturer and speaker.

She is known as one of THE go-to practitioners in our industry when it comes to understanding the needs of active people and athletes. But you don't need to be at an elite level in order to benefit from her wisdom and knowledge. So even if you are training to run 5km or wanting to get into gym training, listen up, because there will be SO many gold nuggets in here for you.

(Oh – and if you ARE an elite athlete, pay extra attention, because this woman has information to share that could literally be game-changing for you.)

Most studies done on sports nutrition are done on… you guessed it… MEN. And as Kira says, "Women are not small men."

So it's time to look into what is best for us females (yay!), whether we're elite athletes, weekend warriors, or anything in between.

In this episode we delve into nutrition for active women, and cover ALL the juicy stuff, including:

  • What to eat before and after training in order to feel good and have more energy.
  • Whether we should train in a fasted state, or whether to eat beforehand.
  • Protein powders – should you? And if so, which one?
  • Pre workouts, and why they're on the shit list for a lot of women.
  • What to do to protect your adrenals and prevent burnout.
  • … and why Kira reeeally dislikes the word "biohack." 😉

STNH 31: Jade Miles – Futuresteading – Live like tomorrow matters16 Nov 202100:51:38

Many people think that permaculture is JUST about gardening or growing food in a sustainable or organic way… but you are about to learn that it is sooo much more than that.

Meet the gentle powerhouse that is Jade Miles.

She is passionate about localised food, regenerative farming practices, intentional growing, and operates a farm rich in its diversity of produce.

She grows apples, pears and berries, nuts, stone fruit, quince, olives, pomegranates, currants, figs, herbs, flowers and vegetables. Her background in tourism shines through in her business model, as you can visit her property and pick your own fruit.

She also operates a fruit tree and perennial plant nursery, and runs regular feasts, gatherings, workshops, schools programs and farm tours educate us about the food that we eat and the skills needed to grow it.

If that's not enough (hmmm… type A, much?), she is also a keynote speaker, a podcaster, a writer, and she has just finished her first book, Futuresteading – Live Like Tomorrow Matters.

Jade takes us through the core principles of permaculture, which are:

  • Earth Care
  • People Care
  • Fair Share

…and she makes it accessible and do-able for EVERYONE… even if you like in a city, and your "garden" is your balcony!

Just like yoga is so much more than just the poses, permaculture is so much more than just growing food. It's about tuning into the seasons, getting outdoors, slowing down, appreciating (and sharing!) what you have, building a strong local community, living harmoniously with the world around you, and creating a simple life that still feels rich and abundant.

Listen as Jade takes us through the simple but powerful shifts we can make as we embrace the bigger picture… and how to do it all in a joyous, no-pressure, non-dogmatic way.

STNH 30: Kylie Pinwill – 5 things your mum didn't tell you about menopause09 Nov 202100:59:41

Today's guest came into my life as a breath of fresh air on the Sunshine Coast. She was one of the first people to welcome me when I moved to the area, with a coffee and a chat. Turns out we got along famously. She's an amazing nutritionist who works in a niche that is soooooo needed. You see, she's all about helping women navigate their perimenopausal and menopausal years with more ease and grace.

We were talking last week about the changes that both our bodies are currently going through, and also those of our clients, and we were joking about the fact that no one tells you what you're in for. Like, not even our mums. We often get told about the hot flushes and the night sweats (often because we'll see a family member or friend struggling in the hot weather), but menopause is sooooo much more than that. And that a lot of symptoms come as a surprise and/or shock to women.

Which is why I've got her on the show.

We decided that we want to be ALL about the education, so we will be going through the top 5 things your mum didn't tell you about menopause. And we won't be pulling any punches. Yep, we will be going into glorious detail… yep, even the vag symptoms!

And of course, we will be giving you loads of tips on how to manage your symptoms naturally.

STNH 29: Emma Park – The First 1000 Days – microbiome in mums and bubs24 May 202101:08:19

Meet Emma Park – she's a good friend of mine, a bloody amazing practitioner, and a super intelligent human. She's out-nerds me on all things gut bugs and microbiome, and just quietly, is one of my go-to phone-a-friends when I have a tricky question. So to my zoom clients, when I say to you "I'm just going to check that with a colleague," it could well be this woman I'm calling.

Her wholefood cooking on Instagram stories is to die for, and it's lucky we don't live in the same town, otherwise I'd be on her doorstep every single night. She brings her knowledge as a nutritionist and her love of food together in epic meals with loads of veggies and gut loving ingredients.

Her love of feeding people healthy meals has even extended to her leading teams in remote parts of Australia on indigenous health and nutrition projects, where their efforts saw health markers dramatically change in their sample populations after just one month's work.

But the reason I've got her on the show is because she also wears another hat – you see, her absolute zone of genius is working with pregnant women and new mums to ensure a healthy gut microbiome, through the combination of diet, gut healing strategies and the right probiotics at the right times. So, this episode is all about picking her brain on how to achieve better outcomes for both mums and bubs.

In this interview, we will cover:

  • Why is a healthy microbiome so important for BOTH mum and bub?
  • Signs that mum's microbiome might be out of balance.
  • Why antibiotics given to mum can affect the baby's microbiome, even after the birth.
  • Which strains of bacteria are needed for the best outcomes.
  • The WORST foods to eat whilst pregnant for the microbiome.
  • What to eat during breastfeeding to improve baby's microbiome.
  • What if the baby is on formula? Are there still things you can do?
  • The drugs that mess up the infant microbiome.
  • What are the signs that mum's and bub's microbiome isn't right?
  • The good outcomes that can happen when the microbiome is in balance.

STNH 28: Lara Briden – The hormone rollercoaster of perimenopause10 May 202101:03:34

You may remember Lara Briden from Episode 21 of this podcast, when we had a very enlightening chat about PCOS and endometriosis. She is a naturopathic doctor, an educator, an author, and a women's health activist. She literally wrote the book on how to have a healthy, stress free, pain free cycle – it's called the Period Repair Manual and it's loved by both practitioner and laypeople alike.

And now she's back with a new book called the Hormone Repair Manual – Every Woman's Guide to Healthy Hormones After 40, which is all about perimenopause and menopause. Which I have to say, that as a woman who is about to have her 45th birthday, I find this more than a little timely. So just like last time, we are going to talk about what's normal, what isn't normal, how to address unwanted symptoms naturally, and how we can navigate this tricky time with grace and ease.

If you're a woman over 35 years old, this episode is a MUST.

In this podcast we will cover:

  • What a healthy perimenopause (and menopause) is supposed to look like.
  • Why we may be entering into perimenopause MUCH earlier than we think (and what signs to look out for).
  • Why more and more women are suffering from symptoms during perimenopause.
  • Why our periods might get worse before disappearing altogether (and what to do about it).
  • Why going from the contraceptive pill and the hormonal IUD straight into menopause could cause issues.
  • Which foods and drinks could be making your symptoms worse.
  • Natural remedies for perimenopausal symptoms (including Lara's favourite herbs and a mind-blowing lightbulb moment about iodine!).

STNH 27: Sharon Collon – Nourishing the mothers of kids with special needs18 Apr 202100:51:45

You may remember Sharon Collon from Episode 7 of Straight Talking Natural Health, where we talked about ADD/ADHD, and her business, The Functional Family.

Several members of her household have ADHD, which in the past led to her becoming burnt out as she learned to navigate everyone's needs, constantly putting herself last. She developed an autoimmune disease and had to embark on a long road back to recovery, learning a lot along the way about self care.

Sadly, this isn't an unusual scenario for mums of kids who have additional needs.

Anecdotally in both our businesses, Sharon and I have both noticed a HUGE link between having neurodiverse kids, and the mums developing chronic illness, especially autoimmune diseases and health conditions associated with long-term stress.

So I've got her on the show to pick her brain about nourishing the mother, and how to create a structure and lifestyle where EVERYONE is healthy and happy.

Listen as we chat about:

  • The warning signs of burnout in mums.
  • The horrible affliction known as "mum guilt" (and why it's completely pointless!).
  • How to accept help when it's offered.
  • How to improve communication between family members, reducing stress and strain on everyone.
  • Ninja tips for a more harmonious household.
  • How to bring back the magic and wonder to your relationship with your child.

STNH 26: Jess Jones – The Burnout Club22 Mar 202100:47:24

Meet Jess Jones – she runs a club that in her own words, you never wanted to be in. But sadly it's a club to which many of us could subscribe, or have been a good candidate for in the past. It's a club that I think is on the way to have many more members too, if we don't start taking steps to avoid it.

You see, it's called the Burnout Club, and it's a place for women to learn a new way to live, work and most importantly, practice self care. And by self-care, I do NOT mean a pedicure or massage (although they're great). Think of it as a complete mindset shift and habit change for many women.

Basically this is rehab for Type A's. And it's SOOOOO needed.

In this interview, we chat about:

  • Jess' own burnout story, and how being super-driven placed a massive strain on her career, health and relationships.
  • Why burnout is often driven by unresolved emotional stuff… and what to look out for.
  • The shame associated with burning out, and Jess' learnings from that.
  • How Jess prioritised self-care, and what that looked like for her (spoiler alert – it's not a pedicure!).
  • The dangers of using alcohol to relax when you're burned out.
  • What we need to change in order to come back from burnout (or prevent it happening!).

STNH 25: The Merrymaker Sisters – Self-acceptance, self-kindness and respect for our bodies14 Mar 202100:50:10

You may remember Emma and Carla Papas (aka The Merrymaker Sisters) from long, long ago when they featured on my podcast when it was called Shiny Healthy You. Back then we chatted about all things food, healthy eating, and how to eat gluten, dairy and sugar-free whilst still being excited about food.

Since then, their business has taken a bit of a different direction. You see, they have gone down the rabbit hole into yoga, pilates, meditation, and all things body acceptance and self-kindness.

But of course they didn't stop there. They launched an app which has brought everything together in one place – amazing recipes, motivation, pilates, meditation, yoga… the lot. Through their app, their podcast, their blog and their social media, they reach 118,000 people every single month. That's huge.

But what's even more amazing is that their work has transcended age groups – they serve people who are at all stages of life – from kids and teenagers, to busy mums and professional women, and those aged 60 and beyond.

Emma and Carla have a LOT to say about body image and why the fitness industry is built on body shaming.

Listen as we chat about:

  • Why their diets became too obsessive to the point of causing stress.
  • Why they never use before and after photos in their marketing.
  • How they get results and motivate their clients without using fear or shame as tactics.
  • How they grew to love and accept themselves and really enjoy feeling confident in their bodies again.

This episode is a MUST for anyone who's been let down by the diet industry, who's ever felt like they're not enough, who's grappling with accepting themselves (curvy bits and all)… and for anyone with a teenage daughter.

STNH 24: Hayley Dawson – What's in your tank water?28 Feb 202101:00:38

Some of you may remember Hayley Dawson (aka The Rural Naturopath) from episode number 17 of Straight Talking Natural Health, where we talked about what it's like to be a natural health practitioner in the country areas of Australia. It was an eye opener that revealed the unique issues that our rural and remote communities face when it comes to wellbeing.

I've gotten this legend back on the show to share with you a personal story about her own health issues, and a warning. If you're on tank water, if you visit somewhere regularly that has tank water, or if someone you love is on tank water, listen up, because this episode contains information that you may find shocking, and that you 100% need to hear.

Do NOT put this off. This is one of those "take action now" kinda podcasts.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • The types of pathogens or toxins we can find in our tank water.
  • The symptoms of water-borne pathogens.
  • How these tank water pathogens can affect mental health.
  • How we can get rid of the bugs out of our systems.
  • How you can get your tank water tested.
  • How you can go about getting the tank cleaned- and what to ask for.
  • Water filters – what's the gold standard?

STNH 23: Caitlin Cady – Meditation, perfectionism, and overcoming the resistance to being still21 Feb 202100:58:34

Caitlin Cady is an absolute powerhouse of a woman whose CV kinda reads like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel.

On one hand, she's a driven business person who owns two nightclubs and has been known to listen to gangster rap. On the other hand, she exudes a calm radiance, is a devoted yogi, and has been described as "spiritual AF." She has a beautiful, heart-centred business that's all about getting people to meditate regularly. She makes meditation accessible, enjoyable… and dare I say it… fashionable. (Ahem – just ask her about her super cute line of clothing.) Most of all, she's now a published writer of a fabulous book, "Heavily Meditated."

In this episode we chat about:

  • What meditation is… and what it isn't ("There are so many myths around it – that you need a calm mind… that you need to stop thinking").
  • How meditation helped Caitlin heal from a serious chronic illness… and also "chronic perfectionism."
  • Why driven women need meditation, and how we can teach ourselves to stop and ACTUALLY do it!
  • Overcoming the resistance to sit still and get it done.
  • How to carve out space for stillness, even when you have kids (and how to be a role model for self care).
  • How to show up, let go and embrace your practice, even when it's messy, wonky and not perfect.

STNH 22: Amie Skilton – Mould Illness Explained07 Feb 202101:20:01

Amie Skilton is quite simply one of the warmest, most approachable, most intelligent and well researched practitioners in our industry. She's a bit of a legend when it comes to skin issues and some of you may know her from her social media where she is known as "That Naturopath."

But her interests and her zone of genius took a pivot in recent years when she developed a very serious case of mould illness and CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome). In 2017 Amie went from being a normal, healthy woman, to being completely physically and neurologically debilitated… due to mould exposure in a water damaged building.

She was told by a doctor that "there's nothing is wrong with you."

So she did what any good naturopath does – she sought out further studies so that she could help both herself and others with the same issue (because that's what we do!). She threw herself into the world of building biology and is now a qualified mould testing technician.

Mould illness is a huge issue in Australia – naturopaths see so much of it in practice, and it's often mistakenly diagnosed as adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue or allergies. So this episode is a MUST if you or someone close to you is experiencing these issues.

In this episode we cover:

  • What is CIRS and how is it diagnosed?
  • What are the signs and symptoms of CIRS and mould illness?
  • How a naturopath will address mould illness and CIRS.
  • The tell-tale signs that you might be living in a water damaged building.
  • How to check if your home is healthy.
  • How to keep your home healthy if you live in a humid area.
  • The sneaky places that mould can turn up in your house (spoiler alert – we're talking about bedding… ewwww!).
  • What to do if your landlord won't address the mould and water damage in your home.

STNH 21: Lara Briden – Endometriosis, PCOS and why the standard medical treatments don't work31 Jan 202100:56:38

Lara Briden is an absolute superstar when it comes to women's hormones. She's a naturopathic doctor, educator, author and women's health activist. She believes it's every women's right to have a stress-free, pain-free period without drugs (and yes, this includes the oral contraceptive pill).

Tune in as we chat about:

  • Why endometriosis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) are often misdiagnosed.
  • Why PCOS has nothing to do with cysts on the ovaries – and how we should be diagnosing it instead.
  • Why period pain is not a symptoms of PCOS.
  • Why endometriosis should no longer seen as a condition of hormonal imbalance, and which systems in the body we need to address instead.
  • Why the contraceptive pill is not the answer for either condition.
  • Post-pill acne, and why it's a symptom of PCOS.
  • Natural solutions for both endometriosis and PCOS, including which diet is best for you.
  • What a NORMAL period should be like (you might be shocked by this one!).

STNH 20: Emily Hazell – How to boost serotonin naturally24 Jan 202100:47:54

Meet Emily Hazell – she has built an oasis in Melbourne that helps people escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A place that has become a sanctuary for busy people who need a moment to chill out away from the pressure of their fast paced lives. A place with a menu full of incredible, healthy foods… with a twist.

You see, she has designed everything around boosting your happy, feelgood neurotransmitters, and in particular, a little guy called Serotonin. In fact, she refers to her business as a "happiness centre."

I've spent years being dazzled by her instagram feed, full of colourful, vibrant food that literally makes me drool. So I'm so excited about having her on the podcast.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • What serotonin actually is and why we need it.
  • Ways that we can boost serotonin.
  • Things that deplete our serotonin.
  • The pitfalls of our fast paced lives, and how we can bring things back into balance.
  • How to create moments of calm and happiness whilst living in the city.
  • What to do when you're totally and utterly overwhelmed by the stress and busy-ness of life.
  • Emily's tried-and-tested 12 steps to happiness (how many of them are you doing?).

This is one of those beautiful conversations where you realise that deep down you KNOW what you need to be doing for your health, but it reminds you to actually prioritise those things.

STNH 19: Liz Cook – What the perfume industry isn't telling you12 Jan 202100:49:47

Meet Liz Cook – a trailblazer in the perfume industry, because she's doing it very differently to the big names. She has the most beautiful brand called One Seed, which makes organic perfumes with nothing nasty added. And there was a real need in the marketplace for this to happen.

Why?

You see, most of them are super toxic. Like, full of chemicals that will disrupt your hormones toxic. And there are some high profile "natural" companies out there who are claiming to be low tox, but are actually anything but.

So what are the scary ingredients that we want to avoid?

How can we spot dodgy synthetic fragrance companies that are pretending to be natural? You'll be shocked at how many of them are out there! (Because #healthwashing.)

Why would we want to consider using natural perfumes over essential oil roll-ons?

Let's chat to this amazing woman and find out.

STNH 17: Hayley Dawson – The Rural Naturopath10 Dec 201900:44:08

Following on from last week's episode with Jody Vassallo and Farmer – The Cookbook, we are keeping a rural theme… this time focusing on something that's incredibly important – the health and wellbeing of our farmers.

If ever there was a niche that was sooooo needed in Australia right now, this episode's guest has definitely found it. When I came across her work recently I was like "OMG, of course! Thank god for this human!"

Meet Hayley Dawson – a naturopath who works with people living in remote and rural areas, people who don't have access to naturopathic care, and get this… she even has a program that's just for farmers!

Talk about a lightbulb moment.

So many of our farmers are facing crisis at the moment, which can seriously impact both their physical and mental health. And Hayley saw an opportunity to help.

Tune in as we chat about:

  • The specific health issues that face farmers and their families (that sometimes city practitioners just don't get).
  • Her thoughts on pesticides/crop sprays, sheep dips and farm chemicals… and how to protect yourself.
  • Why small, achievable changes to farming practices are a crucial part of her treatment plans.
  • Tank water – is it really full of parasites? And what can we do about it?
  • How to eat healthy when you're living in a remote area.
  • The irony of farmers having to buy overseas veggies from their own supermarkets.
  • Dealing with the inevitable stress that comes with running a farm in these tough times.
  • Depression, anxiety and feelings of isolation.
  • How to get "blokey Aussie blokes" to see a naturopath (and embrace it!).
  • How Hayley reaches and supports people who are even in remote areas.

STNH 16: Jody Vassallo – Farmer The Cookbook04 Dec 201900:48:32

This episode is soooo important if you are looking for meaningful gifts this Christmas (or if you just want to treat yourself and give back at the same time!).

Jody Vassallo has some mad skills when it comes to creating healthy recipes. She's worked with everyone from Donna Hay to the Jamie Oliver franchise, and there's every chance that if you've bought a recipe book in the last 20 years, you've seen recipes that have been developed by her or styled by her. And that's not all – she is also a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic coach, so you know that her own work is always about nourishing meals and healthy, wholefood cooking. Her own cookbooks, Beautiful Food and The Yogic Kitchen, are legendary, and well worth a look.

BUT… That's not even why I've invited her on the show! You know… sometimes you come across someone who is just a bloody good human. And Jody is also one of the most generous and giving people I know. When times are tough she steps it up, gathers her people and launches into action. Recently the drought in many rural areas of Australia escalated to a point where farmers were undergoing unprecedented grief and suffering. And she saw an opportunity.

And so Farmer – The Cookbook was born – a fundraising effort that will honestly knock your socks off.

In this show, find out what drove Jody to create this book, how she called in the big guns (um… helloooo Jamie Oliver!) and then worked tirelessly to create something really special. Something which is giving back hundreds of thousands of dollars to our farmers.

Want to grab your copy of Farmer The Cookbook?

You can purchase it via the usual outlets like book stores and Booktopia.

STNH 15: Dr Carrie Jones – Hormones, cortisol and why we're so broken14 Oct 201900:57:44

"Hormones are like children – they need to be attended to at all times."

Today's guest is someone that I only recently discovered when watching some seminars online… but when I came across her, I was hooked! She boils the hard stuff down to make it easy, her talks are super relatable, and dare I say it, maybe even a little bit entertaining. Yep – she's my new functional medicine nerdy girl crush.

She's also the Clinical Medical Director of Precision Analytical, a company that does some pretty cool functional medicine testing. So of course I did what any nerdy girl would do – I asked her to come on the show so that I can pick her brain about her zones of genius – women's hormones, adrenals, and functional testing.

Yep, we're getting into the technical stuff today – so grab a pen and paper, strap yourself in, and soak up the wisdom that is Dr Carrie Jones.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The reason that women are more affected than men when it comes to toxic exposure.
  • Why plastics (and bottled water!) are so bad when it comes to hormone disruption.
  • The causes of PMS, endometriosis and fertility problems.
  • The rise in weight gain and moodiness in men, and what to do about it.
  • Which hormones to test for and why.
  • How to re-balance your hormones (there's plenty that we can do!).
  • Why liver detoxification is key to hormone balance.
  • Why TSH is not a TRUE marker of what your thyroid is doing (and what you should be testing instead).
  • DUTCH Testing for female hormones – what it is, and who can benefit from it.
  • The different markers on a hormone test and what they mean.
  • Why estrogen-dominant cancers can be affected by our hormone detoxification pathways.
  • Why broccoli and brassica-based foods and supplements can help with hormone balance.
  • The COMT gene and its role in hormone metabolism.
  • A supplement called DIM – when to use it, when NOT to use it, and why you need to be super careful with it.
  • The link between elevated histamine and oestrogen.
  • Why getting your cortisol tested via a single blood test is NOT the most accurate way to do it.
  • Why issues with cortisol balance can lead to autoimmune disease (and how to prevent it!).
  • How to reset your circadian rhythms, and why deep sleep is EVERYTHING.

STNH 13: Tara Nelson – Why so many thyroid disorders are going undiscovered and poorly treated24 Sep 201900:50:15

"Every cell and tissue in the body requires thyroid hormone. So it's massive."

Meet Tara Nelson, an outspoken and passionate naturopath who wants to set you straight on thyroid disorders.

Tara is based in Western Australia with over 24 years of clinical experience. After many years of seeing loads of thyroid conditions in her clinic, she went into research further education in order to create better outcomes in her most complex patients. She has gone on to write a thyroid recovery program she shares online and with her patients, and she also offers a 6 week online practitioner thyroid training program which she runs twice a year to educate practitioners in thyroid health.

But most of all she is on a mission to bring awareness and education to the public and practitioner community alike about the importance of thyroid health on a deeper level.

"I was looking at all the pathology results, and on paper they were ok, but they still had all the symptoms… I was getting more and more of these people, and they weren't getting the help they need."

In this episode, we will cover:

  • The definitions for hyperthyroisidm, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune thyroid disorders like Graves and Hashimotos disease.
  • The signs and symptoms of hyper and hypothyroidism.
  • Nodules, swelling and other thyroid pathologies.
  • Why so many cases of thyroid disorders are going undiagnosed.
  • Why people may swing from hyper to hypothyroidism.
  • The effect of stress and high cortisol on the thyroid.
  • Which tests to ask for at your doctor.
  • Why your GP might not have picked up your dodgy thyroid from a bog-standard TSH test.
  • What the other thyroid markers mean, like T4, T3, and Reverse T3.
  • Why you might still feel crap, even though you're on thyroid medication.
  • The best diet/s for thyroid disorders.

"You can still have thyroid autoimmune disease, such as Hashimotos or Graves, and still have a perfectly normal TSH."
