Welcome to today’s episode, where we explore the life of Aleister Crowley, one of history’s most infamous and enigmatic figures. Born in 1875, Crowley grew up in an oppressive evangelical household, shaped by the stringent beliefs of his father, a preacher of the Plymouth Brethren sect. Under the watchful eye of his religious family, Crowley’s early years were marked by severe teachings about sin and salvation. However, after his father’s untimely death, the young Crowley began to rebel. He rejected the rigid dogma of his upbringing and was drawn to forbidden subjects—magic, mysticism, and the occult. As he aged, Crowley became a central figure in occult societies like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later founded his own, establishing himself as both a revered and reviled figure. His life became a whirlwind of scandal, experimentation, and a search for spiritual meaning beyond the confines of conventional faith.

In the second half of today’s episode, we turn to a cautionary tale of a young girl who, much like Crowley, attempted to escape her reality. Seeking to be someone she was not, she ventured into unfamiliar territories, hoping to transform herself into something different. Yet, as she reached the peak of her transformation, she discovered the consequences of leaving her true self behind.

In today's episode, we will discuss the life of Mansa Musa I, the 14th-century emperor of the Mali Empire and the richest man in history. His wealth came from Mali’s abundant gold mines, which made him a symbol of power and prosperity across the medieval world. In 1324, Mansa Musa embarked on a legendary pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj, with an entourage of tens of thousands. During his stop in Cairo, Egypt, Musa’s generosity was on full display as he distributed vast amounts of gold, so much that it destabilized the local economy and caused a temporary devaluation of gold. After completing his pilgrimage, Musa returned to Mali, bringing back scholars, architects, and artists who contributed to the flourishing of Timbuktu as a center of Islamic learning. Mansa Musa’s reign ended sometime in the mid-1330s, and while the exact details of his death remain unclear, his legacy as one of history’s greatest rulers endures.
