The Basics of Appliqué08 Sep 202100:20:51

Well I'm back!  From (what I consider) a much deserved summer break.  And boy, do I have a lot in store for y'all.  This is an episode that you definitely don't want to miss.  Be sure to listen in for all the cool new things coming up.

But first a quick announcement:  Enrollment for Learn to Quilt in 60 Days is Open NOW!  And for a limited time only.  Doors close 9/12 and the first day of class is the 13th.  To learn all the details, head over to nicolegilbertquilts.com/enroll

For those of you who are faithful listeners, you know that appliqué isn't my jam.  I think I've said those exact words several times on the podcast.  But recently, that has changed for me.  If you listened to my New Years episode a few months back, I mentioned that this year I wanted to learn some new techniques and I truly have dived on in on this.

I've become a prolific bag maker, an English paper piecing addict, and.... an appliqué artist.

Yup.  applique.  I have to admit, whenever I used to think of appliqué, images of sunbonnet sue and little houses with chimneys always came to mind.  For those of you familiar with my quilting aesthetic, you know that is for sure not up my alley.  SO I started to explore.  And I found a project I fell in love with.  SO much so, that I've even started down the path of certification to teach this specific technique for a major national brand.  More on that later this fall.

But now that I'm in love with all (or at least most) things appliqué. I thought I'd go over the basics of appliqué and some the tools you may find helpful.

Sampler Spree Sew Along

Sampler Spree by Susan Ache

This is about projects that no longer bring us joy.  That are a chore to work on and you really don’t care what the finished product is cuz it is just not your jam anymore.  But you might still be feeling wishy washy about it, I mean thats a lot of time, money and energy you put into that

Ask yourself:
Do you still love it?
Do you want to put in the time and money to finish it?
Will it bring joy to your day to work on it, gift it, or display it in your home?
Do you have the space to store it? Or would you rather that space be used for a new project?
Does the occasion still exist for this quilt? For example, if it is a baby quilt, but the baby is now in high school, is there still a need?

So what can you do if you decide its just not love anymore?
Donate the unfinished quilt to the local guild, almost always someone willing and excited to finish
Repurpose the orphan blocks as pillows, placemats
Make a scrappy backing using orphan blocks

Finding Your Quilt Pattern Designer Bestie28 Oct 202000:19:28

I get asked all the time where I find the patterns for the quilts that I make.  And how do I so consistently find quilt patterns that fit my "theme" or aesthetic when they are from such different designers.  And the answer is that I've done the self analysis.

I know, I know.  That sounds so extra.  And no, it's not some deep version of guilty therapy.  Instead, I suggest you start where all great art starts.  Pinterest.  Duh.  Just start pinning.  I suggest you start a board where you only pin quilt patterns that you like and would like to try one day.

Then take a step back and really find the commonality in the patterns you chose.  Do you prefer traditional blocks?  What about color?

Then I want you to find a fabric designer you love.  And check out the quilt patterns that they've created to go with their fabric lines.  Do you see where I'm going with this?

It's all about exploration.  But I love this exercise because not only will you figure out your favorite quilt pattern designers, but you'll find out your quilting aesthetic, your favorite fabric designers, and so much more.  This a quilty education rabbit hole and I hope you explore it!

Quilt Labels21 Oct 202000:22:29

Quilt labels are often the unsung heroes of the quilt world.  They are a great way to leave your mark.  I always think about my grandchildren finding one of my quilts and seeing the tag and thinking about what grandma was up to in 2019.  I'm sure I'm overly romanticizing the whole thing, but you get the idea.

In this episode we talk about embroidery, iron ons, custom made and even how to print your own quilt labels on your home computer.  I go over information that you can include on your next label as well as ways to attach it to your quilt.
