Sharing our Sexual Stories of Shame, Healing, and Freedom26 Jul 202601:00:29

The best way to help a young man feel safe enough to share his sexual story is to appropriately share your sexual story first. That's why in this episode, we put our core value of "leaders going first" into practice. Through radical vulnerability, we hope to prove that no sexual secret is too dark to disqualify anyone from community, grace, and love.

Our Stories

  • Drew’s Story: Drew opens up about moving from Toronto to Texas at age 13. Facing intense loneliness and isolation, he fell into a cycle of using pornography and developed a specific, shame-filled fetish focused on braces. True transformation began when he joined a support group at age 18, allowing him to finally be known and loved. This journey has now led him into over 10 years of freedom.
  • Blake’s Story: Blake describes growing up in an unstable home environment riddled with unpredictable anxiety and fear. This volatile climate led him to internalize the destructive belief that he was fundamentally unlovable. After first encountering hardcore pornography on a school bus at age 15 or 16, he relied on it for years to numb his emotional dread until finding deep recovery through vulnerable, grace-filled brotherhood.
  • Doug’s Story: Doug shares a complex history involving childhood sexual abuse starting before the age of five. He outlines navigating pervasive exposure to pornography as a youth alongside deep feelings of worthlessness stemming from being emotionally ignored by his father. After a powerful moment of reconciliation with his father at age 21, Doug dedicated his life to breaking the generational cycle of silence by fostering open, loving communication about sexuality with his own children.

Key Takeaways

  • Vulnerability Kills Shame: True recovery requires stepping out of isolation and finding safe people, because we can only be as fully loved as we are fully honest.
  • The Devil is in the Details: The specific fixations or unique patterns in pornography usage are never random; they are emotional hooks deeply tied to unaddressed pain and personal narratives.
  • A Call to Action for Parents: Parents, we strongly encourage you to break the silence around sex, share your stories at age-appropriate levels, and own your emotional impact on your children.

Welcome to Start Younger, the podcast that helps boys, young men, and their fathers start healing and outgrowing porn younger

Meet Your Hosts:

What We Cover in This Episode:

  • The "Why" Behind Starting Younger: Porn exposure is happening at increasingly early ages. We discuss why student recovery needs to be responsive rather than just preventative.
  • Debunking the Myths: Why the ideas that teens are "too young, too immature, or too unwilling" to do the work of recovery are completely untrue.
  • Porn is What Happened to You, Not Who You Are: A look at how early exposure impacts developing brains and why shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset counteracts toxic shame.
  • The Power of "Going First": Why adults and mentors must model vulnerability to create a safe environment for young men to open up.
