It's finally time for Stage 16's BEVERLY HILLS COP episode!

In this episode, Shaun and Stuart take a very deep dive into Martin Brest's first film, Tony Scott's explosive sequel, not much into the best-forgotten third film from John Landis and then Mark Molloy's new Netflix film AXEL F which comes in as a mostly redeeming 4th film in the franchise.

In the latest episode of Stage 16, Shaun and Stuart talk all things trailers and movies beginning with the trailers for BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL FOLEY for Netflix and BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE which opens in September from Warner Bros. Next, Shaun shares a funny story about the one time he got starstruck seeing an actor!

Sticking with Michael Keaton, they discuss KNOX GOES AWAY, the new film Keaton both directs and stars in which leads to a brief appreciation of the John Lee Hancock film THE FOUNDER which also stars, you guessed it, Michael Keaton.

After that it's a chat about THE FALL GUY, FURIOSA and why the studios need to go back to the 90-day theatrical window.

In this month's episode, Shaun and Stuart talk about toxic fandom and where social media comes into play before taking aa deep SPOILER FILLED dive into Doug Liman's new Amazon film ROAD HOUSE and what Shaun believes to be audiences being "trained to accept mediocrity."

Stuart goes through his likes and Shaun his dislikes from the remake and they pose the question: Is there a modern day equivalent for Patrick Swayze?

FURIOSA starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, the trailer for ALIEN ROMULUS starring Cailee Spaeny (PRISCILLA) and the BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE trailer which leads to a brief chat about the BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL FOLEY trailer, Shaun's excitement for that film which drops in July on Netflix and a nod to the sheer brilliance of composer Harold Faltermeyer who, sadly, isn't returning for the new film.

They even share a couple of his best score cues from the first two COP films before Shaun shares a bit about his experience as an intern on COP III and the Landis mistake. 

Masters of the Air, The Pacific and the legacy (and large shadow) of Band of Brothers, Apple TV's new series Manhunt about the search for John Wilkes Booth following his assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and HBO's recently completed series True Detective: Night Country.

In the first episode of Season 3, Stuart and Shaun talk "emotional maturity" and some of the radically inappropriate films they saw at a young age leading to a discussion of what Shaun is showing to his young son now including the 1984 smash GHOSTBUSTERS. This leads to a brief discussion of the 2016 "All Female" GHOSTBUSTERS, 2021's GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE and the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE which opens in March.

And now, for those of you who follow Stage 16, Shaun or Stuart on social media, you can all find out which of the GHOSTBUSTERS legacy cast Shaun hasn’t worked with!

They talk about the loss of the great Carl Weathers… and about being at an age where no small amount of our cinematic heroes will be… leaving the building, and what that feels like.

 

They end on a discussion of the leading contenders for the Oscar and BAFTA Awards and Shaun shares his feelings about the films he’s seen - which is all of them - including a side chat about the brilliance of Best Supporting Actor nominee Sterling K. Brown.

 

They also talk about what it’s like to have gotten the opportunity to meet and speak with some of the amazing actors and filmmakers they’ve met and when they "freak out."

The guys talk briefly about their love of movie poster art before digging into the 20th Anniversary of LOVE ACTUALLY - a film both of them have on their holiday watchlist but neither have watched yet this season. They also discuss the backlash against the film in certain circles. 

Shaun and Stuart break down their favorite storylines - at least the ones they can remember - and discuss the bits that may have been a little odd… even back in 2003.

This leads to a discussion of toxic fandom and why we should all just let people like what they like without dog-piling them online.

Finally, Shaun teases a bit of info about Emerald Fennell’s new film SALTBURN which is quite a trip and Stuart talks about revisiting some of director John Woo’s older films along with the critically-panned THE POSTMAN from director Kevin Costner. 

Wrapping things up, they talk briefly about CARLITO’S WAY and the genius of Sean Penn and Gary Oldman.

In this absolutely jam-packed episode of Stage 16, Shaun and Stuart talk about Loss of Matthew Perry and the loss of all the practical sets at the famed Warner Ranch. Next, Stuart gets Shaun to share some stories from the sets of WILD WILD WEST and THE GLIMMER MAN. Then Shaun decides to share one last Steven Seagal story.

Switching topics, Shaun wonders if we are at the beginning of the end... the end of physical media that is, which leads to a discussion about the downside of streamers, the joys of browsing cover boxes and a new way to do it digitally.

They'll talk about Willl Smith, how the release of Jada Pickett SMith's new book may be compounding the damage to Will's career and whether he can come back from the fallout caused by... his... wife? This leads into a brief conversation about Amber Heard and cancel culture. 

They then close out the episode with a discussion of Paramount's mishandling of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 and what it means for the sequel, the ever-present question of when audiences will get the next James Bond adventure and, finally, a view of Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and one last little tidbit about cinema books.

In Episode 2.06, Shaun and Stuart begin by celebrating the WGA's win against the AMPTP and briefly discuss that hard-won victory.

Next they talk a bit about a movie they came late to the table on... BARBIE* which leads to Shaun sharing a behind-the-scenes tidbit about the making of an iconic shot from ATONEMENT - a story he heard from director Joe Wright and DOP Seamus McGarvey which then leads into a chat about the infamous “oner” shot in film... like the opening of A TOUCH OF EVIL or THE PLAYER, a key sequence in Joe Wright’s THE SOLOIST and in films where shots appear to be "oners" but cheat a bit like CHILDREN OF MEN or BIRDMAN. 

Next, Stuart puts Shaun into the Way Back machine and asks about a few of his past projects beginning with tv’s SeaQuest DSV. Shaun shares how he got his start and how he made his way onto the Universal lot in the first place to get his first job

Next up Stuart asks about Disney’s JOHN CARTER and Shaun definitely had an interesting experience on that one.

In this episode, Shaun and Stuart check in on the state of the writer's and actor's strike and what is still very much at stake for both unions and their members, which leads into a brief discussion of the film S1M0NE (which Shaun briefly worked on), the AI takeover and the loss of residuals for talent.

The guys talk about their longing for the cinematic past and then take a look at a major film depicting the past in OPPENHEIMER. They'll talk through the many reasons Cillian Murphy having finally earned his leading role in a bug-budget film is a win for all, and the twisty narrative notions of Christopher Nolan as well as the oft-complained about sound design in his films.

Shaun talks briefly about Sony Pictures' GRAN TURISMO with David Harbour channeling Hackman and Indiana Jones' final adventure (now on digital!)

Next they'll dive into some spoilers from THE FLASH, talk about the film's truly wonky VFX and saving babies.

Rounding things out, Shaun wonders if we're being "trained to accept mediocre" at the cinema before Stuart pays tribute to the late great William Friedkin, leading to a discussion about the impending loss of legends and who might replace them.

Finally, O’Banion asks Stuart who, from the current crop of actors, he’d cast in a remake of UNFORGIVEN. How about you? Who would you cast?

They'll talk about their excitement for INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY despite the online trolls and negative reviews out of Cannes and about whether the film will feel different without Spielberg at the helm. After that they'll talk about the FAST & FURIOUS franchise and their lack of enthusiasm for FAST X which has just opened globally (including a spoiler about the film, but don't worry, they'll tell you before they talk about it so you can mute for a few seconds).

In this episode, Shaun and Stuart talk about the tragic loss of actor Lance Reddick and cover their Top Five films in the filmography of the late, great Tom Sizemore. Shaun even shares some Hollywood insider stories about Sizemore and the man was... wild.

Next up, they tackle the soon-to-shoot GLADIATOR sequel from director Ridley Scott and Shaun's sympathy for a certain young actor who isn't coming back. Then they discuss Denzel Washington's casting announcement which reunites him with Scott after their last film AMERICAN GANGSTER.

They talk about Jared Leto, separating the art from the artist, actors ticks, Denzel's wardrobe choices, JOHN WICK 4 (no spoilers), Pixar films and the upcoming theatrical release of ELEMENTAL, 80s classic LABYRINTH and then about the first films they saw in the theater and growing up watching films that were wildly inappropriate as kids.

Together they'll talk about Stuart's origins, his other well-known podcast, the inexplicable Rotten Tomatoes score for Ridley Scott's BLACK RAIN and, finally, they'll take a look back at the BAFTA Awards and dig into all of the BAFTA (and Oscar) nominees and the BAFTA winners.

O'Banion and Roberts finally take a deep dive into TOPGUN: MAVERICK, the smash hit that has made more than $1.28 billion dollars at the box-office so far and has stolen TITANICs record and become Paramount Pictures highest-grossing film in history. The guys discuss the film, what they liked and what they didn't. Hint, there is more to the former than the latter. To close things out, Roberts talks a bit about the new Apple TV series Black Bird and star Taron Egerton's bid to take over the role of Wolverine for Marvel and O'Banion mentions the rumors circling that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg may be joining the Marvel fold as well... as the director of a new Fantastic Four movie!

In this episode O'Banion and Roberts talk about their feverish anticipation for seeing TOP GUN: MAVERICK this week and whether the film will follow other recent Paramount releases to the studios streaming platform after just 45 days. They'll discuss the recently leaked and later officially released trailer for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PT. 1 which Roberts has an interesting theory about as well as the magic of practical stunts and effects and the use of invisible visual effects. Next they'll briefly talk about director George Miller's new film 3000 YEARS OF LONGING which recently debuted it's wild looking trailer following its successful debut at Cannes before digging into  the trailers for THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, PREY (the new entry in the PREDATOR franchise set to premiere on Hulu), THE GREY MAN coming from Netflix and the Russo Brothers and starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana Dee Armas, Jeff Bridges going full JOHN WICK in FX's The Old Man, Stranger Things 4 which debuts this week on Netflix along with Obi-Wan Kenobi premiering with 2 episodes on Disney+. Rounding out trailer talk the guy's take a look at AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER before talking about a new director and cast addition to Universal's FAST AND FURIOUS film FAST X which lost director Justin Lin. Lastly, they talk HBO's House of the Dragon and how they just can't seem to get excited about it after the finale of Game of Thrones let them both down before looking ahead to the premier of Cobra Kai season 5 on Netflix later this summer. So much to talk about on this week's Stage 16!

With CinemaCon going on at this very minute in Vegas, Hollywood is bursting at the seams with updates. O'Banion and Roberts start with the first full screening of Paramount's TOP GUN: MAVERICK and its gushing critical reception. They'll talk briefly about Lady Gaga's bid for an Oscar for her new song for the film, following in the path of Berlin's Best Original Song winner Take My Breath Away from the original. They'll talk about the biggest industry news this week, Justin Lin's departure from FAST X (the next film in the FAST & FURIOUS franchise) nearly a week into shooting and what that means for the film, its cast and crew and what they may do moving forward to see the production moving. They'll also address the ("alleged") problem with Vin. A quick conversation about some cast from the franchise leads to a brief sidestep into the money these people make (and the real estate they can afford) before they move on to AVATAR 2, Disney's win in picking up Fox and Lucasfilm and Marvel's trailer for THOR: LOVE & THUNDER. 

They've got a little more info on Kevin Costner's new HORIZON, they'll talk Sony's greenlight for GHOSTBUSTERS 4 (or AFTERLIFE 2), the failure of MORBIUS, the middling success of VENOM and its sequel and then touch on the genius of Marvel's Kevin Fiege and, now that Roberts has seen it, the brilliance of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME and the potential for a multi-verse of standalone Spidey films. 

Sticking with Marvel, they'll look briefly at the upcoming DR. STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, the next two SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE films web-swinging down the calendar and then briefly switch to Pixar for the LIGHTYEAR trailer. After that it's time to discuss Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reuniting again for a new Amazon film, Idris Elba getting hijacked by Apple TV+, The Offer on Paramount+, The Ozark finale (which drops today on Netflix!) and Bill Hader and Alec Berg's Barry returning on HBO Max after a long absence. They'll round out the hour (+/-) with their anticipation of the AVATAR 2 trailer, Damien Chazelle's upcoming Brad Pitt/Margot Robbie film BABYLON and Robbie's new David O. Russell film with Christian Bale and her BARBIE film with Ryan Gosling. Lastly they talk JURASSIC PARK: DOMINION's final trailer, Universal's penchant for spoiling entire films in their trailers and some upcoming episodes.

On this episode of Stage 16, O'Banion and Roberts discuss feeling "the need for speed" and the full trailer for TOP GUN: MAVERICK finally coming out. Delayed for three years, it looks as if 'Pete Mitchell' will finally make it to screens this May. Talking TOP GUN leads to a conversation about the late, great Tony Scott and some of his best films - including Tom Cruise's DAYS OF THUNDER and one of its more humorous moments. Then the guys briefly talk SCREAM (5) before getting to the two biggest entertainment news stories of the moment: Will Smith, The Oscars and 'The Slap Heard 'Round The World.' And Bruce Willis retiring from acting due to a brain condition called 'Aphasia.' They go over the hits (and some misses) from his legendary career and, finally, talk briefly about the 23rd anniversary of THE MATRIX and where they both saw the film that would eventually come to have a very personal connection for both of them.

On this episode O'Banion and Roberts talk Obi-Wan Kenobi and a potential rematch with Lord Vader and Josh Brolin's new sci-fi western series Outer Range coming from Amazon. They'll try to figure out how Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan are mounting a sequel to I AM LEGEND and talk about whether Jordan could be called up to direct. After that they'll touch on a new Disney+ Halloween special from Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (THE BATMAN), talk about why neither Shaun are really fans of Guillermo del Toro films and have a look at del Toro's upcoming PINOCCHIO and his recent film NIGHTMARE ALLEY. Then of course it wouldn't be a podcast about movies without a brief chat about Matt Reeve's THE BATMAN and DC's big 2022 push which leads into a discussion of their mutual love of Michael Keaton (and Kurt Russell). That conversation briefly veers into the rumored BEETLEJUICE sequel before they leap into another film featuring Sand Worms: Dune 2 and its latest cast additions including Florence Pugh (BLACK WIDOW, Hawkeye) and Austin Butler (ELVIS, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD).

They guy touch on PANAMA with Cole Hauser and Mel Gibson’s still struggling career, the Lord/Miller series The After Party on Apple (no spoilers), and the new wave of criminals and swindlers on streamers including The Dropout on Hulu with Academy Award-nominee Amanda Seyfried, We Crashed on Apple with Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto which leads into a discussion of Jared Leto and HOUSE OF GUCCI during which Shaun Roberts professes his love for Adam Driver and talks about Pacino’s reinvigoration before they circle back to Leto and even talk about his performance as The Joker in SUICIDE SQUAD. Lastly, they'll talk about director James Mangold wrapping Indy 5 and his new project about a star of the silent screen before ending on Sacha Baron Cohen joining an Apple+ series and a big new deal for Angelina Jolie.
