| Special: Intro to Stack o' Dice | 20 May 2018 | 00:06:20 | |
Follow a band of intrepid friends as they seek to understand the world changing around them, and work together to face a growing evil. Enter a world of adventure and mystery-- in Vardalon! This first episode of our new podcast series lays out what we want to do in this series. There are a couple major things we want to share with you. First, we're excited to share our actual play episodes. We have a great story cooking, some fun characters, entertaining players, and an all-new world to explore. Plus, we're recording this as a family-friendly series, because we want you to be able to share it with absolutely anyone! We're going to try to adhere to a once-a-week schedule, aiming for Monday as a release day. Second, we want to share some of the behind-the-scenes workings with you. We know that running a game can be daunting, and we want to share our process with you. The DM doesn't claim to be the best in the world, but if you like what you hear, use it; if you don't, ditch it! We just hope you'll find something of use in this secondary, sporadic series of podcasts. With that, the Stack o' Dice gang welcomes you, and we're excited to share our story with you!
| Special: Meet the Mystic | 21 May 2018 | 00:11:49 | |
In this first special content episode, we take some time to get to know a little about our first player, Michael, and we go over the highlights as we create his mystic character, Wamberbash Bensonmum. The mystic is a new-ish class in 5e; it was introduced last year in Wizards of the Coast's officially unofficial Unearthed Arcana, and we thought it'd be fun to give it a try. Psionic (or mental) magic has featured to varying degrees in previous editions of D&D, so we want to give it a shot in this game. Also, if you haven't already, please take a moment to check out our Twitter feed (@stackodice) to keep up with the latest on what's shaking in the Stack o' Dice world. We're excited to have you join us as we tell this story together.
| Ep 3 - Everybody was Bandit Fighting | 11 Jun 2018 | 00:57:13 | |
In our last episode, Wamberbash led his new friends to his woodland home, only to find that his beloved spoon was nowhere in sight. After a fruitless search and a nighttime journey fraught with bad dice rolls, they spotted a fire in a clearing up ahead. What lies in the clearing? Will Wamberbash ever find his spoon? Did you remember to pack your puer cha? Let's find out together in this episode! Thanks for sharing our story; we really appreciate your support and hope you enjoy what we've put together. We're having fun sharing our adventure with you each week, and we'll only get better with time! If you like what you hear, please take the time to leave us a review on iTunes, since that bumps us up in the ratings and lets more people join in the fun. | Special: Texts of the Jewels - From The Vashundinaya | 06 Nov 2019 | 00:04:44
Toward the beginning of our journey together, Tira, Bash, and Peter found an ancient text that pointed them to the four Jewels of Edelenn, cities of learning that contained more information to help fight against a growing evil in the world of Vardalon. The fourth Jewel was the Red Castle in the Clouds, an ancient, abandoned fortress on a stone hill. It was once the center of a thriving city, but now lies in the midst of the lush jungles of Rahajmanath. After a tense chase, challenging puzzles, and a terrible ordeal, the party discovered the text surrounding the base of a stone altar atop a pyramid. This special episode provides the text in a standalone format for easy reference. Here's the text: From The Vashundinaya Hymn I – Ramena-bindalar 1 We hailed the light and sang its glory in olden days, 2 the light that once was whole but now is wrapped in dark, 3 for evil came and split it, though not without first causing harm to itself, 4 then giant pieces from the stars fell, three and three and three but one, 5 falling to this world and driving out before them the song that once infused all life, 6 the inner life ripped out even though the outer life remained. 7 For we who saw, for we who lived in this day, we wept; 8 we are but shadows in a darkened room, mere ghosts. 9 To truly live once more we must hope for the two to be restored. Hymn II – Unadeva 1 Sing to me, my love—distract my sadness with memories, 2 or tell me where they lie, these godly shards, that I may desire no more. For in my mind your words have woven a cloth of red and yellow and blue, 4 these three and three and three but one that mean so much to us. 5 Well-scattered did they fall, and at their touch the world writhed; 6 to heal the break will mean pain before it ever means comfort. 7 So come to me now, beloved; I will fill your nostrils with perfume 8 even as you fill my ears and my heart. 9 Spin your tale—make my mind light once more. Hymn III – Ramena-bindalar 1 Hear then, beloved. They fell, the three and three and three but one. 2 Of the light, one came to Kazara, a jungle land far to the east, 3 one rested in the golden sands of Kashara, a land that dwells in the very gate of the rising sun. 4 One fell in Daranda in the high lands north of us, where—laugh not, for it is truth—water turns to stone. 5 The last of the light we could not find—a fitting picture. 6 Of the dark, two brothers fell, one far north and east, in Randaz of the sky-reaching mountains. 7 Its twin came down not far to the south in Bindaida, a high place and remote. 8 The third fell to the center of this vast land, buried well. 9 The last of the dark we could not find—a fitting picture. 10 Now the tears fill my eyes and steal my voice. My tale is all too brief. I sorrow that I could not entertain you longer, my love. Hymn IV – Unadeva 1 Alas, these places are all so far away. 2 Are you a prince of merchants that you can travel to them all, to sate your heart with looking on them? 3 Great peril, it seems, would be your lot, indeed the lot of any, who travel to such far-flung reaches, 4 where wild beasts dwell and the very land devours those who walk it. 5 The shards of divinity will always be out of reach, and we are forever changed. 6 Now is my despair darker than before. 7 Do you see my tears that flow for the music that has departed? 8 Yet well I know this tale is brief, nor could I blame your telling of it. 9 Be still, my love, and let us sleep, for only there will we find forgetfulness. ----- We used an excellent Battlebards music track. Special Episode: In our actual play-less post-Thanksgiving period, we thought it'd be good to fill the time with a bit of backstory, so we revisit a place the party has already gone to see what life is like in the Valley of the Bones. | Special: The Song of the Witani | 30 Dec 2019 | 00:14:03
Toward the end of Episode 64, Tira, Bash, and Peter were dining in the great mead hall of Beorhtmedu with the Marchioness when they heard singing coming from outside. This special episode shares the contents of that song, which Rhett has patterned after the style of Old English poetry. The format may be a bit odd for most of us, since this style relies more on repeated initial sounds instead of shared ending sounds, but we hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless. Here's the text in a standalone format for easy reference: The Song of the Witani Lo! May we, the many-numbered approach the all-giving mother of our kin, the open-handed, giver of bright gifts of gold to the brave and bold warriors of the wind-swept plains. Of old our horses roamed to the rising-home, the sun’s sweet hall where Dawn drinks deep of day to come. Of old our horses strode to the setting-home, where the wings of night press in upon the pale. Of old our horses made us master of all between, and lords of a land that sprang with sweetest gifts. Once our will ran right and true, a single sense that burned bright— three threads today that once were one— we, the Witani, knew defeat as does the east the west. No foe might fight us and win; in the great grass lands, where horse-bands' blade fell fiercely on those who tried to take from us. Many woeful learned to wail, sad for all the empty seats in their halls of honor when our warriors rode: Glory-filled days gone with the whisper of the wind. Then came the crows, feasting with raven feathers on us, talons tearing us brother from brother, rending and riving and driving deep the cracks that cut our folk far from love for itself. May gods give grace to heal the hurts that have torn us, tell us how we might mend and not needlessly drive hatred deeper. For now, fair gods, our need is nearer than ever, as dark hosts stand at our door, their swords swift and sure. Our gift-giver, the Fair Lady who sits in the honey-sweet hall, leads us to light, makes haven for the hungry and helps the helpless with a wall in the wasteland, a firm friend with all-shielding arms. Her hands hold no gold but let it freely flow to those who love the land that remains ours by right. Yet up climbs the cost as days drag on to months. Too many horses run home with no warrior holding high the blooded blade and battered shield. They lie in the long hills made by man’s hands, cold arms crossed below the blood-soaked earth. And still the slaughter makes its way to where both hearth and heart once dwelt. Here, we wail for them. But bold horse-bands still ride and bite the black-clad foe, guiding them with wounds too great to seek softer lands. In this great work the will of our Lady leads, for of herself she helps— her own child, strong and steady, rides to rid the land of the fearsome foe. How can we lose heart when so many work for our good? Time fails us to tell of storied names and steeds Who work as one in sun’s harsh heat, or moon’s glow, in grey of winter’s snow or spring’s sky-tears. Of Ecgferth, Ealdraed’s son, or Totholt the life-taker our songs once sang, and still will, should gods’ smiles stay on us. While they ride forth for us, our heads may rest under roofs where careless dreams come. Our songs and words to gods hasten their feet. But though the tide of Witan care creeps high, new hope hastens to us, unseen by all but the wisest ones we have. For do our songs not say that from the sun may sail hope from on high? And lo, again, may we know our hope anew, for on this day, when dread has seemed as black as it could be, a wondrous sight, when from the gathered gloom five friends came from a ship that sails the clouds. Without a sea, this water-horse has led the light to bring to bold Beorhtmedu a way to wage new war. The first is full of craft, wise Esymires, whose wingéd steed sails the sky. He led to Stedingas the band. Then comes Radiance of the sun, a worthy warrior blessed with the aura of Ardan. Her arm shall awe the darkness. Bold Peter walks worthily in the name of life and light, a land-living one who walks with Vasham. A doughty dwarf with axes keen and cruel is Tira, eldest daughter of the earth. A fool is he who raises her wrath. And last but not the least, wild Wamberbash, who wears the smell of snarling beasts as most might wear a skin. These all have sailed swiftly from the morning’s meadows, leaving the heated halls of the rising red sun to bring to truth the words that fill sorrowful souls with fire and flame rekindled to scorch and slay those who would claim our lives and lands. So sing we now, and shall sing, Witani all! ----- We used an excellent Battlebards music track. If you like what you hear, check them out at battlebards.com. In this episode, we provide a handy spreadsheet that pulls together the various references in both the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide into a single handy place. | Creation Corner: Feelin' Smurfy: Creating NPCs on the fly | 30 Jun 2018 | 00:12:59
Do one-dimensional NPCs in your games have you feeling. . . blue? In this special episode, Rhett wants to share a really neat NPC creation technique. The original idea comes from an interview between Satine Phoenix and Taliesin Jaffe in an episode of Satine's excellent GM Tips series. GM Tips video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQZR4smjUEc This video inspired Rhett to create a spreadsheet version of the technique Taliesin introduced, but with a slight twist: https://1drv.ms/x/s!Ai_DSO_CT_ACg4Ao9hDNfPcymdn7rw To use the spreadsheet, first save it to your computer. Click on the ellipsis (...) in the upper right corner of the screen, then choose to Save a Copy. Once you have the sheet, simply type anything into the grey cell, then press Enter. This will cause the sheet to recalculate, generating a new NPC persona. Anytime you change the contents of the grey cell and press Enter, the sheet will update. If you want to make changes to the contents, just follow your spreadsheet program's instructions to unlock the spreadsheet first. There is no password. Use it in your game, and have a great time with the result! How does it work out for you? Did it lead to any fun experiences? Let us know!
