The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is followed immediately by the commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe's first apparition to St. Juan Diego nearly 500 years ago. This event and the spread of Catholicism in what is today Mexico reminds us of the power of the Faith to overcome the darkness of idolatry and the barbarism of religious practices that disregard the sanctity of life while resisting God's desire for mankind's salvation.

Why did God not give those angels who rebelled against Him a second chance yet He came and died in agony to save us from our multitude of sins? This sermon explores four reasons for Our Lord's decision, with special emphasis on God's unique compassion for mankind.

In St. Paul's epistle to the Philippians, he reminds the faithful that Our Lord is God while describing what holiness is. Moreover, while St. Paul details all the ways he followed the Law faithfully, he does not place his hope there. Rather, his hope is the same as ours ought to be: to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is God and that we may be united to Him in His passion and death.

The parable of the Good Shepherd instructs us on the mercy of God and the dignity of man. Contrary to the recent declaration Dignitas Infinita, a proper understanding of the parable reveals that our dignity emanates from our relationship with God and our conformity with His plan for us.

Our Lord’s choice to teach through parables presents challenges for us as now as they did for those in His own day. This is not, as St. John Chrysostom instructs us, because Christ wanted to conceal His teachings. Rather, He invites our wonder through these parables to place us on the road to true conversion and understanding.

The institution of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is for our salvation. It was offered for the first time on Holy Thursday and continues to this day through the ministry of the priesthood, which was first given to the Apostles and then handed down to their successors.

Palm Sunday is when we celebrate Our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Yet less than a week later, the same people who shouted “Hosanna!”, on Sunday yelled, “Crucify Him!”, on Friday. How often do we behave the same, one day praising Our Lord, and the next day offending Him?

As we work out our sanctification for the remainder of Lent, we must remember that it is God Who sanctifies us. This is why we must maintain a spirit of humility, for it is not by our efforts, but God's grace, that we are sanctified.

God has not simply declared His love. He manifests it in the Incarnation, bestowing true charity upon the world. That is why it is a sign of a true Catholic is one who believes in charity, that is, one who believes in the love of God. But to believe in God's love in truth means that we must manifest it ourselves in our love toward our neighbors.

In the world today, the family is under attack, not only from society but from within the Church as well. With this attack comes an assault on the meaning of manhood. Today, society uses entertainment and escapism to create broken men who are soft, pleasure-seeking, and emasculated. Catholic men, by contrast, must rely on faith and the teachings of the Church to stand firm against these assaults, not just for their own salvation, but the salvation of the families entrusted to their care.

Catholics often lament that while they perform certain good works regularly, such as attending Mass, making visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and reciting the Rosary, they still fall into sin. The virtue of meekness is preeminently Christian. If we are true followers of Christ, we should be meek as He was meek. Meekness is the virtue that moderates our feelings of anger, impatience, and revenge. Like all virtues, meekness helps us restrain our passions and keep us from falling prey to sin.

This time of the liturgical year, we should reflect on the virtues and the saints who exemplified them. There is Josaphat, the martyr from Ukraine who exemplified fortitude. And Lawrence, who tells us about the virtue of charity through his life and then Gertrude, who reminds us by her example how near she was to God. All of them are examples of true faith and piety.

St. Joseph appeared to many as an unremarkable man who lived out his life quietly as a carpenter. And yet he is honored by the Catholic Church as the greatest among saints, second only to the Blessed Virgin Mary, for taking up the sacred duty of caring for the Holy Family. Moreover, St. Joseph is a model of steadfastness in the face of great trials, not only for those in our own lives, but the trials facing the Church as well.

We often make resolutions or wish to take on special penances, then quickly forget. In order to help us keep these praiseworthy promises, we must follow the guidance that the Church has long given, namely to live in the presence of God. The Bible speaks repeatedly of the presence of God while also warning what happens when we turn away from Him.

Temptations are inevitable. Through a lack of self-discipline, we leave ourselves at greater risk of temptation. However, even the spiritually prepared must be on guard against trials and temptations. This is particularly true during the time of Lent, where we may receive many graces from our Lord, but are also likely to be targeted by the devil.

The Church’s law requires Catholics to receive Holy Communion no less than once a year, between the start of Lent and Trinity Sunday. However, when she says Catholics must receive the sacrament, she means they must receive worthily. One of the elements of worthy reception is to have a good intention, that is, to be instilled with a supernatural motivation to unite ourselves with God.

The world, which places a premium on freedom, pressures Catholics into losing sight of the gravity of sin. We fail to appreciate how great our sins offend God. Sin is an awful thing. It is a rejection of friendship with God. And while God offers His infinite mercy through the sacrament of confession, we must be on guard not to fall into the sin of presumption by abusing this gift.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is the new Adam, come to undo what the devil has done. While Our Lord has no need of preparation, penance, and fasting, he endures the 40 days in the desert as a model for us all. He wants us to be ready for the onslaughts of the devil and to prepare ourselves for the gift of the heavenly Kingdom.

Dom Hubert van Zeller, the famous Benedictine writer and sculptor, once observed that we find religion boring. At some time or another, may of us have been tempted to find our religion, or some aspect of it, boring. We know the Catholic Faith is necessary, but for most of us, we want as little to do with the demands of Catholicism as possible. In other words, we want to do as little as possible to save our souls. But is the Faith truly boring or is there a problem with our perspective?

All learned commentators agree that in the Parable of the Sower, the seed is the Word of God. The question for us, though, is what type of ground do we prepare to receive this seed so that it may bear spiritual fruit? Our anger, resentments, ingratitude, and indifference, not to mention placing too much emphasis on emotions, often leave us unprepared to receive God's Word. Without a spirit of patience, God's Word will not bear fruit in our lives.

In the Gospels, the leper and the centurion stand as models of faith. Like them, we need a strong, living, and vibrant faith. Faith, as a gift from God, requires prayer above all else, but we must nourish this gift so that it continues to grow in us. This is why good reading is essential, so that we know our faith profoundly, understand it, and remain steadfast in it.

As we come to the end of the liturgical year, our minds turn naturally to the end of all things. The passing away of this world inaugurates a new world that will never pass away. For at the close of time, the purpose of this world, which is to bring mankind to their salvation, will be finished and a new life with God begins.

Twice during his earthly ministry, Christ fed a multitude of people by multiplying loaves and fishes. These miracles were performed not only to relieve the people of their physical hunger; they were done to relieve every one of their spiritual hunger, too. In these miracles, Christ shows us all Who God is, that He is a merciful Father Who desires our salvation.

He who never risks for God will never be an extensive dealer in the riches of heaven. With this in mind, we consider the Magi, who were among the first figures in the New Testament to place their earthly comfort in jeopardy for Our Lord. We consider as well the sacrifice all must make, priest and laity alike, to follow Christ, to seek Him at the altar, and to give everything to attain the riches of heaven.

The storm-tossed boat on the Sea of Galilee is, according to the Church Fathers, an image of the Catholic Church. For like the boat that contained the frightened Apostles, the Church, too, must endure great storms. Indeed, it is in the midst of one now. Yet Our Lord is with us; He does not abandon us or the Church. This is why we look to Him and pray that He will bring calm again in the midst of tribulation.

Before His Ascension, Our Lord affirmed that all power in heaven and on earth had been given to Him. Yet many Catholics, perhaps unwittingly, question this truth by wondering why God does not use His power to forcibly correct the errors that plague both the Church and society. On the eighth day, Christ submitted Himself to the Old Law by undergoing the ancient rite of circumcision though He had no need of it. He repeats this submission two more times: at the Presentation and in Baptism. Through these rites, Our Lord separated Himself from the world, including sin. What Our Lord reveals, particularly through the words of St. Paul, is that these rites are empty without a conversion of the heart. For without this conversion, we cannot truly separate ourselves from the world and recognize Christ as our savior.

It is important to always think of the love of God for us. But how grateful are we for that love? Ingratitude, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, is one of the worst sins, yet how often do we fail to show gratitude? If we are grateful for one grace, we dispose ourselves toward receiving further graces. If we remain ungrateful, however, we imperil our spiritual lives. This is why the Mass is so important, for through it, we give infinite thanksgiving to God.

A world that has fallen so far into ruin, hardship, and pain needs one thing above all else and that is Christ. Our modern age is not so unlike the world of 2,000 years ago where the expectation of God's coming was thought of in a worldly way. We may wish for God to come as a conqueror, defeating our enemies and restoring order, but instead God came to us as an infant to achieve something even greater: our salvation from sin and death.

It is an immemorial custom for people to make resolutions for the new year. It is equally customary that these resolutions are not kept. Too often, we try to have everything at once, such as resolving to give up all of our bad habits. We would do better to make specific resolutions that, by God's grace, are achievable throughout the year. In this way, we may grow in virtue without succumbing to discouragement when we fall short.

The miracle of Christ walking upon the water to rescue Peter in the midst of a storm reminds us that even in the midst of great turmoil, Our Lord never abandons us. Even when we believe we are abandoned, God never departs from us.

It is not enough to just stay away from sin or the corruption of our bodies. We should seek purity of mind, that is, a mind focused on God. This union of our mind with God's is what allows us to live authentically godly lives. The prayers of Advent contained in the Missal direct us to cultivate this purity while the season itself directs us to prepare for Christ's coming through making a good confession after a thorough examination of conscience.
