Flight 42 - Mask Shaming & Distance Learning23 May 202002:10:35

Recorded on 21st of May, 2020

On todays show, we will be discussing load factors and the outlook for pilots looking ahead to October 1st. The president doesn’t seem concerned about the aviation industry, should we be? Also, with the reduction of flights throughout the country, the 5% increase in load factor, according to the TSA’s report last week, has started to become evident with aircraft that are starting to become "uncomfortably almost full." We will also explore in the WTF segment face mask shaming, seriously…yes, seriously. There has also been some flight deck mask push back, why is that, we will discuss. And finally we will explain Distance Learning. To help me navigate these topics, I am honored to be joined by a group of aviators that I have bribed generously to be on today’s show. Did you guys get your Squawk Ident stimulus checks yet? I promise they are in the mail…

We first introduced today's guest on episode 21. He and I first crossed paths in the year 2000, when I had my first discovery flight and thus began the birth of my journey in aviation. He is currently working for a cargo operator we call “Zulu Air”. He joins Captain Roger, RobD, and Av8rTony from his home in Vicenza, Italy, were he is currently under a country wide mandatory quarantine. We are going to discuss how he has been coping with all the changes to our new reality and what it means for his journey looking ahead.

Flight 32 - Stronger Together, an Aviation Couple's Journey18 Mar 202002:00:52

Recorded on 17th of March, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I am joined by an aviation couple that have shared their journey in aviation together. I first met Jeri in 2017, when she was just getting back into the airline world after 13 years away from the profession. She and her husband Ty have been able to navigate the many downturns and celebrate great accomplishments in their careers all while raising a family. From sound engineering to space camp to civil air patrol and more, they both have been an inspiration to me for many years. Today, I was able to interview them. Their journeys have been filled with love and sacrifice. At a time when what we need more of is positivity and celebration, I am honored to share our discussion with all of you.

Flight 31 - Do Not Panic!13 Mar 202001:38:43

Recorded on 12th of March, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have a conversation with my co-host RobD. We discuss what has been spreading around the flight line faster than an infectious disease spreading on a crowded cruise ship, that’s right…we are talking about “job security.” No, not the mall cop kind, we are taking about the kind of job security we pilots worry about worse than this virus itself, we are talking about stagnation, furlough, line quality, canceled upgrades, and pilot hiring freezes.

Most importantly, there is one piece of advice I can give in my 3 decades of employment, and nearly two decades at the airlines, DON’T PANIC! This industry is very cyclical and is affected by many complex factors. RobD and I are going to dive into the latest information about how the current climate of the US airline market is moving towards.

Flight 30 - Economic Turbulence Ahead?06 Mar 202001:29:47

Recorded on the 4th of March, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I am joined by my co-host RobD. Together, we discuss some of the factors that continue to adversely affect the aviation profession and how they could potentially create a big problem for an aviator's journey in todays market.

First, we take another look at the 737-Maximus. Will it return to the flight line as we have come to know it, or will it be rebranded? We then look at how the CoVid19 state of emergency might just be the next big economic disaster for the airline industry. And, does art imitate life? We look at a few films and novels from the past that are eerily familiar to the headlines of today.

Join us on this journey here on Squawk Ident Podcast

Flight 29 - Tupelo, Delta State, & an Acme Bus Driver03 Mar 202001:34:44

Recorded on the 28th of February, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have the opportunity to speak with young aviator who’s journey intersected with mine early on in the progression of advancements in our respective careers. His path directed him left, when mine went right. Here we are over a decade later, he flying for a U.S. Legacy career we refer to as ACME Airlines on this show, and I at a U.S. Legacy career that we call LEGACY Airlines on Squawk Ident.

We as aviators often find ourselves saying things “like you never know where you are going to end up in this profession, it is a little luck, a little bit of chance, and a whole lot of timing.” This statement can not be better represented than tales from the journey we will dive into on this episode of Squawk ident.

Flight 28 - From Building Airbuses to Flying Them29 Feb 202001:14:37

Recorded on the 25th of February, 2020

On this episode of Squawk Ident, I have the honor in speaking with a captain that I shared a flight sequence with a few weeks ago. Listening to the tales he shared about his journey in aviation was an amazing experience.

All of us professional aviators have our unique stories to tell about how we progressed through the challenges that come with this profession, but his story stands out. From an apprenticeship at a company that later became British Aerospace to flying for Air Atlanta Icelandic. He has survived multiple furloughs and recalls, mergers and bankruptcies, and countless interviews in between. In addition to having the patience to answer my barrage of questions about his journey, he is also one of the most kindest and personable individuals that I have come across.

We also briefly tackle a topic that has been flooding the headlines with the Coronavirus epidemic in full scare! What are your risk factors if you fly domestically in the U.S. right now? Do those cheap masks that you buy at your local pharmacy actually protect you or is it all just overreaction driven by media frenzy?

And in a recent and tragic turn of events, we will discuss the importance of situational awareness and safe layover practices in the wake of some devastating news that a fellow aviator lost his life when caught in the cross fire while on a layover in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Recorded on the 20th of January, 2020.

On this episode of Squawk Ident I had the opportunity to have a casual conversation with a guest that I introduced on the show in episode 19, Mr. Rob DeJesus. We also explore the difference between performing manual revisions vs. pressing the sync button on the EFB. We even share a story about the actions of a "class act" captain and the power of the parking break. All this and more on this episode of Squawk Ident.

On today’s flight, I am joined by Alex and Terry. Together, we discuss why anyone in their “right mind” would open a cabin door mid-flight (to let in some fresh air maybe). We also listen to some audio feedback, we hear about our first Squawk Ident meet-up, and much more.

Today, we start off the show by with the privilege of having a featured guest on our show. He is a Certified Flight Instructor and former Check Pilot. He’s a former EMB-145 pilot for Sand Piper Airlines, and currently a Boeing 787 Dreamliner pilot for Trans Global. He is also the co-author of “The Airline Transition Manual” and he is here today to discuss his journey in aviation, his new book, and the process in getting published. Today we welcome Andrew Ross to the podcast.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy Flight 134 of the Squawk Ident podcast.

Recorded on 02MAY2023

Welcome on board Flight 133 of the Squawk Ident Podcast - Sick or Fit - Recorded from the mobile Av8r Sound Studios, high a-top the 8th floor of the Sonesta Hotel in beautiful downtown Columbus, OH.

On today’s flight I am excited to be joined by a gaggle of the excellent Squawk Ident co-hosts. Captain Roger, Alex, Terry, Kyle and I discuss the start of the summer travel season, adverse weather, diversion choices, and “Bingo Fuel”. We also discuss a common choice that many airline pilot’s make to move to a cheaper state in an effort to achieve a higher quality of life. From flight training, to sick calls, to equipment changes, we explore our lives out on the flight line.

We also explore a headline that has been everywhere lately, ‘American Airlines Pilots Vote to Strike”. Did you ever wonder what that means? Are pilots refusing to fly the line? Not really. We will discuss this and much more on this episode of the Squawk Ident podcast.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the flight.
