On Sunday, January 26, 2025, the Philadelphia Eagles clinched their 3rd Super Bowl since 2017 with a 55-23 victory over the Washington Commanders. The Eagles will play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on February 9th. Merrill Reese has been the play-by-play voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977. Earlier this season he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by winning the Pete Rozelle Radio-TV Award. He is synonymous with the Eagles and discussed the incredible run by this 2024-2025 Eagles team.In this episode, Reese explained how this season differs from the two recent Super Bowl teams. He also explained how he gets as excited now for Eagles' games as he did in 1977. He discussed the incredible job General Manager Howie Roseman did in putting this roster together. Hall of Fame wide receiver James Lofton is now in his ninth season calling games for the NFL on CBS. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, Lofton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Lofton was named to the NFL Pro Bowl eight times. He was also named to four All-Pro teams. He also played in three Super Bowls during his career with the Bills. In his 16 NFL seasons, Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards and 75 touchdowns. He averaged 20 yards per catch or more in five seasons, leading the league in 1983 and 1984 with an average of 22.4 and 22 yards, respectively. Lofton is the first NFL player to record 14,000 yards receiving.After his playing career ended, he became a wide receivers coach for the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. Lofton served as a color analyst and sideline reporter for NFL coverage on Westwood One radio from 1999–2001. In 2009, he re-joined the network to team with Dave Sims and later Kevin Kugler on Sunday Night Football broadcasts. He moved to a television position on the NFL on CBS in 2017. In October 2010, LeGrand suffered a life-threatening career-ending spinal cord injury in the 4th quarter of a game vs. Army. Jeff Smulyan is known for creating the format of sports radio. Smulyan is the Founder, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Emmis Broadcasting. In 1987, he created WFAN Radio in New York, the 1st 24-hour sports radio station of its kind. That spawned hundreds of sports radio stations across the country. In 1989, Smulyan lead a group that purchased the Seattle Mariners. In 1994, he was named to the White House as a US Ambassador to head the US Delegation to the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunications Union.Living in Indianapolis, Smulyan penned his memoir which was recently this year. In December 2022, the National Football League announced that its Sunday Ticket package, which had been on DirecTV for decades, had signed a 7-year agreement with Google to put the package on YouTube TV and YouTube Premium Channels. The new Sunday Ticket deal could be worth as much as $2.5 billion annually, including payments from YouTube and separate agreements to license the package to businesses including bars and restaurants. RedZone, a popular feature that allows fans to monitor Sunday games when teams get within scoring range, will no longer be available on DirecTV, but the N.F.L. will continue producing its own version of the broadcast. On Monday, January 2nd, 2023, the Buffalo Bills played the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. After a tackle of receiver Tee Higgins during the 1st quarter, Bills Safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be administered CPR on the field. Hamlin was eventually revived and then taken in an ambulance to a local hospital. The game was eventually suspended. The NFL said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that the game will not be resumed this week and that no decision has been made regarding playing the remainder of it at a later date. David Moulton is a broadcaster on the Florida Sports Network. He is also a spotter/statistician for Troy Aikman on the Monday Night Football broadcast. Moulton was in the booth when Hamlin went down. Longtime play-by-play announcer Paul Olden is currently the public address announcer for the new Yankee Stadium. He's been the only PA announcer since the new Stadium opened in 2009. His storied career started in southern California. Over the years he has called games for ESPN, the then-Cleveland Indians, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the New York Yankees, New York Jets, Los Angeles Rams, UCLA Bruins, and even more.He was a WFAN sports anchor when Seth Everett was an intern at the station in the summer of 1994. They were together when calls started coming in about a possible OJ Simpson murder case. He also was the reporter who interviewed Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda and infamously asked what he thought of Dave Kingman's performance. Recorded on the campus of Syracuse University in October 2022, former play-by-play announcer Dave Cohen joined the show. “Coney Island Dave” (a nickname given to him by his dear friend Bob Costas) was the TV voice of the New York Yankees from 1995-1996. He was also the TV voice of the then-Washington Bullets and the original host of Mets Extra. Dave was an original play-by-play announcer for ESPN in 1979. He called Syracuse Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse during the 1980s for a cable outlet called Super Sports.In this episode, Cohen discusses how his career was a combination of being in the right place at the right time. He won an Emmy award for his commentary during Dwight Gooden's 1996 no-hitter. Legendary broadcaster Vin Scully died on August 2, 2022. He was the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers for 67 seasons, beginning in 1950 when the franchise was located in Brooklyn, New York. He retired in 2016. His tenure is the longest of any broadcaster with a single team in professional sports history. He also called nationally televised football and golf for CBS from 1975-1982 and was NBC Sports' lead baseball play-by-play announcer from 1983 to 1989.In this episode, for the first time in 8 years, an interview between Seth and Scully from August 24th, 2014, is presented. That interview was part of the Mets Pre-Game Show on the Mets Radio Network. It has not aired anywhere since its initial broadcast in 2014.Following the Scully interview, National Baseball Hall of Fame President Josh Rawitch joined the podcast. Rawitch spent 15 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he served as Vice President of Communications, also overseeing the Community Relations department. He joined the Dodgers in 1995 and spent parts of five seasons in the marketing department before moving to Public Relations. This week's guest, Marshall Faulk, played in the National Football League for 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and St. Louis Rams. He played college football at San Diego State, where he was a two-time consensus All-American. He appeared in two Super Bowls and won Super Bowl 34. In 2000, Faulk was named the Most Valuable Player of the NFL. Faulk is one of only three NFL players to reach at least 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards and the only one to amass 12,000 yards rushing and 6,000 yards receiving. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.Faulk's alma mater, San Diego State, is currently constructing a new football stadium. Entitled Snapdragon Stadium, it will be the new 35,000-seat, multi-purpose venue for Aztecs football, opening in September 2022. The 2022 baseball season is the first since 1995 that Seth Everett has not covered the sport in a major league capacity. This is also the first baseball-centric episode of the podcast in 2022.
