| #71: Teens, Tweens and School Avoidance or School Refusal (With Jayne Demsky of The School Avoidance Alliance) Part 2 | 19 Sep 2023 | 00:42:05 | |
If you haven’t listened to episode #70, you might want to go back now and listen before returning here. Perhaps you’ve been there; sitting on the edge of your 15-year-old daughter’s bed while she cries and pleads with you not to make her go to school because she “just can’t.” Or maybe you’ve stood outside the bathroom door while your 13-year-old son intermittently throws up and yells that he’s “never going back to that school!”

| #69: Middle School (Tween) Friendships And The Added Stress of Smart Phones (with Jessica Speer) | 12 Sep 2023 | 00:36:05 | |
Middle school sucks for most kids. They feel awkward, embarrassed by everything, want more than anything to fit in and be part of the crowd. And navigating friendships can be ridiculously difficult...but when you throw smart phones in the mix, it's next-level. On today’s episode I talk to Jessica Speer, the author of three wonderful books for kids and teens, who has two teenage daughters herself. She has a masters in social sciences, but what really makes her an award-winning author is her knack for writing that connects with her readers. Her books Middle School (Safety Goggles Advised), BFF or NRF (not really friends), and The Phone Book, are packed with quizzes, choose your ending scenarios, stories, and secret codes…because she knows what she’s competing with. | #68: Parenting to Avoid Conflict And Behavior Issues With Your Teenager | 05 Sep 2023 | 00:39:29
While it's impossible to be a “perfect parent” to your teen or tween, there are certain mistakes we can avoid...and it's crucial to your relationship with them, their overall wellbeing and their eventual success that you learn them now. The parenting mistakes I talk about in this week’s episode lead to lots of unnecessary conflict between you and your teen and can cause or increase a teenager's bad behavior. I’m talking about issues that impact the way we interpret and understand their behavior, the way we handle ourselves during stressful interactions with our teenagers, our mindset and approach to discipline and how much deference we afford them in how they live their lives. | #67: Would You Know If Your Teenager Was Struggling With Their Sexuality? (With Heather Hester) | 29 Aug 2023 | 00:45:30
How well can we really know our teens? Of course, when they’re little we know everything just by default - we know them to their core. But when they become adolescents, our relationship naturally shifts, they want and need more privacy and it becomes much easier for them to hide bits and pieces of themselves from us. Do you think you’d know if they had an enormous secret? One they feel might be just too hard for you to understand and accept (like being gay)? Tune in today for my interview with Heather Hester, another mom who’s really been through the ringer with her son, who came out as gay during his teen years – and learn how they handled this “secret.” Thank you in advance for helping me help more parents! | #66: Teen Anxiety – How to Recognize It, Support Them, And Avoid Pitfalls, (With Lauren Wolfe, LPC) | 22 Aug 2023 | 00:46:36
Teenagers are experiencing anxiety today more than ever before. Yet, as a parent, you may have no idea what teen anxiety looks like or how to help your kid if you suspect they may have it. Teen anxiety doesn’t look like adult anxiety, and often teens and tweens don’t have enough self-awareness to even understand that’s what they’re feeling. So, it falls on you to figure it out, give them the support they need and find the right kind of help for them. On the show today is Lauren Wolfe, licensed professional counselor, and host of the Your Zen Friend podcast. She works with kids, teens, and their families when anxiety makes life difficult. She explains what teen anxiety looks like and what you can do (and shouldn’t do) to help your teen if they’re living with this overwhelming disorder. Parenting is a stressful journey, and the teen years can be a major challenge when we don’t understand what role our own emotions play in our day-to-day interactions with our kids. On the show today is Hunter Clarke-Fields, the Mindful Mama Mentor and host of the Mindful Mama podcast. Hunter is also the bestselling author of Raising Good Humans and has just released her second book, Raising Good Humans Every Day: 50 ways to press pause, stay present and connect with your kids. | #63: The Science Behind Why Teenagers Can Often Be Such Major Boneheads | 01 Aug 2023 | 00:21:27
You know it's true! We should all just have "what the hell were you thinking?" tattooed on our foreheads! We not only have to watch out for their wildly emotional behavior but we have to worry about them doing things they've always promised us they've NEVER do. Afterall, they know better. We know they know better. And if you gave them a true/false test, they'd get it right every time: Drinking is bad - TRUE, Vaping is bad - TRUE, Smoking marijuana is bad - TRUE, Driving 75 mph with a car full of other teens singing a long to the latest hip hop hit is bad - TRUE. | #62 Your Teen’s Brain Is A Long Way From Functioning The Way You Think It Should | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:33:17
As parents, we have a lot of expectations of our kids (and we should). The problem is, once they start looking more like an adult, we start expecting them to act like one. The "funny" thing is - that's not the way this works. Just because they have to shave or they're allowed by the state to practice driving doesn't mean they can show empathy for us or can do their homework when they should or can stay calm when something's upset them. We assume they can do things they can't. We assume because they can do one thing, they should be able to do another. We assume, they could if they just wanted to. Screens. It’s the absolute bane of every parent’s existence. And it only gets worse when kids get old enough to spell and search! And when puberty kicks in, well it’s a whole other story. I know I’m not the only one who’s silently cursed Steve Jobs every day since my child first laid his hands on an iPhone. | #59: Helping Your Teenager Discover Their Potential Future Career | 03 Jul 2023 | 00:34:11
“What do you want to do when you grow up?” It’s the question kids become accustomed to from the time they can talk. They’ll give answers like astronaut, doctor, teacher, veterinarian or maybe artist, dancer, singer. But as they move through middle school, they begin to understand a little more about the “practicalities” of some of those careers as the adults in their life begin to wield more influence. And the closer they get to graduating from high school, it can seem that’s all anyone around them is talking about. That “little kid question” has now become much more of an “adult question”, which looms so large it can start to cause them major stress. What do they want to do for the rest of their lives? How do they decide? What should they consider and when do they really have to know? Today’s episode addresses how parents can help their teens move closer to deciding their initial career goals, without steering them in the wrong direction. | #58: Why Teens Are Sleep Deprived, The Ramifications And How To Help | 27 Jun 2023 | 00:41:50
Guess what? Your teen’s not staying up late because they make poor choices. They’re not fighting to stay asleep in the morning because they’re lazy. It’s not their fault - it’s not a conscious decision. Just like other fallout from adolescent brain changes (you know, the ones that make them more prone to unpleasant emotions, more likely to do risky things like party and have unprotected sex, move away from you and towards their friends, etc.), their sleep patterns take a hit as well. And teens are chronically sleep deprived because of a combination of neurobiology, modern life, and an education system that asks too much of them after they go home and takes far too long to accept what research says is best for kids. | #57: Biggest Parenting Mistakes That Lead To Conflict And Behavior Issues | 20 Jun 2023 | 00:38:20
We just don’t know how much we don’t know when we’re trying to be the best parents we can be. So many of us learn later that we should have done things differently. That’s me. I should have done so many things differently. And that’s what drives me to help you learn now so you don’t have to correct course later. The mistakes I talk about in this week’s episode are those that lead to lots of unnecessary conflict and drama between you and your teen and exacerbate a teen or tween’s poor behavior. I’m talking about issues that impact the way we interpret and understand their behavior, the way we handle ourselves during stressful interactions with our teenagers, our mindset and approach to discipline and how much deference we afford them in how they live their lives. It’s impossible to be a “perfect parent” because it’s impossible to be a “perfect human” but if we can avoid making the biggest mistakes, we can save ourselves and our teens and tweens a lot of needless pain and suffering and help ensure they live their best life. | #54: “Big Social Media”, The Surgeon General And Teen Mental Health | 30 May 2023 | 00:42:31
This past week the Surgeon General’s Advisory about Social Media and Youth Mental Health has been all over the news. Mostly, people have hit the highlights and chimed in with their own opinion. But let’s dig a little deeper. Why are so many of our kids in a position of having to choose between their mental health and their social connection with peers? The Surgeon General’s Advisory highlights the most important science to date but still leaves parents without a lot of assistance or direction. Can the government step in and resolve any of the issues teens face on social? What about the Social Media companies – they made this mess; can they fix it? Or is up to parents to continue to try and police their teens (and the teens to police themselves)? | #53: How To Best Support Your Teen or Tween Through Their Depression | 23 May 2023 | 00:38:56
Even if your teen has never suffered in the past and isn’t currently suffering from depression, you need to educate yourself on this very serious topic. Because the risk is so great and the statistics for teen depression and associated harms are currently so high, you simply can’t take a chance. Depression in teens can escalate way too fast and when we’re desperate, we tend to not make great decisions.

| #52: How To Reduce Conflict With Your Teen While Strengthening Your Relationship | 16 May 2023 | 00:39:04 | |
On this one-year anniversary episode of Speaking of Teens, I’ll share with you what it has taken me the better part of the last 4 years to extrapolate from the science: A 4-part framework that will help you avoid conflict with your teen, build a stronger relationship with them and positively influence their behavior. Back in 2017 and 2018 our family was struggling. Our son was experiencing horrible anxiety and major depression on top of ADHD and other learning issues. These issues then morphed into substance use, trouble at school, and trouble with the law. My husband and I did not have the skills to deal with his issues properly. We sought help from many different sources but never really understood the underlying issues until I began reading and studying the science of adolescence. As I began learning more about emotions and how to communicate with him better (my husband really knew better), things started to turn around. The arguments began to dissipate, our relationship improved, and our son’s trajectory completely changed. I haven’t stopped reading and studying since then. I deeply regret that it took me until his 18th birthday to get things right. I regret that I wasn’t more emotionally aware and better able to regulate my own emotions. I regret that I was more concerned about controlling his behavior than learning why he was behaving the way was. I regret that I didn’t know how to communicate with him properly. I sincerely do not want you to have any such regrets and I don’t want your teenager to go through anything near what my son went through. Join me this week for the big picture.

| #51: The Adolescent Depression Crisis – Myths, Truths, Signs, and Symptoms | 09 May 2023 | 00:50:54 | |
This episode discusses depression and suicide – listen with care. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources. Teens’ mental health has been in decline for years. The pandemic was then responsible for pushing the statistics into oblivion. The fact that teens and tweens in the US are experiencing records rates of depression and suicidality should put all of us on alert. This isn’t just a crisis for the teens themselves – it’s a familial and a societal crisis. We should all be concerned about an entire generation of young people in pain. So, join me this week for the first episode in what will become a series of episodes on adolescent depression. I’ll start this week with the basics - the myths, truths, signs and symptoms of adolescent depression. This information could save your child or another teenager in your sphere from misery and despair or worse. Equip yourself and become a valuable asset in the fight against the rising numbers of depressed and suicidal teens. Some people think Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the best thing ever. It scares other people to death. Then there’s the rest of us who’ve been happily unaware of why we should feel either way. Well, join me this week for a foray into a topic that used to be reserved for dystopian and sci-fi movies: AI. After listening, you may have a little better idea of where you stand on the subject.

| #49: The Truth About TikTok; Teenagers, Data Privacy and National Security | 25 Apr 2023 | 00:37:22 | |
NOTE: I failed to mention in this episode that I have all sources detailed in the show notes (see link below) TikTok’s CEO has made the rounds to defend the company; in front of Congress in March, at the TED2023 conference in Vancouver last week. Many in the federal government want to ban the app in the US. and Montana actually did that very thing just days ago. The app has already been banned on federal employees’ work phones and several states have done the same. Is all this hype about TikTok just good fodder for sensational news stories and political grandstanding? Or is there something truly nefarious about TikTok? Is it more than just an app for people to get lost in endless scroll and dream of becoming online influencers? In this episode I’ll break down the claims being made against TikTok, examine the facts, and give you a clear picture of whether or not you can expect to see a US ban anytime soon. | #48: The Healing Power of Emotional Awareness with Vincent VanOhm | 18 Apr 2023 | 00:44:05
It’s hard to overemphasize the importance of emotion in our lives. Our emotions give us direction, they tell us what’s important to us – they can even change our physiology and make us sick, not to mention to huge impact they have on our relationships, including those with our teenagers. Some of us are more aware of our emotions as we’re experiencing them, than others. But there’s a big difference in being aware of our emotions in the moment and understanding why that emotion cropped up to begin with. Emotionally charged situations and traumatic events from our past can subconsciously impact our thoughts, our current emotions, our body, and our interactions with family and friends. Are there certain interactions with your teenager that make you angrier than you think reasonable? Are there certain things they do or say, or certain situations that upset you or make you more nervous than others, but you don’t understand why? Do you have weird unexplained physiological symptoms or chronic pain? We can go through life unaware and confused about so many of the reasons we think, feel, and behave the way we do (and even why we have these weird illnesses, physiological issues, and mental health disorders). Join me today as I talk to Vincent VanOhm, expert on the mind-body connection and co-creator of a trauma healing modality called the Subconscious Imprinting Technique. V (as she prefers to be called), along with co-creator and wife, O’tion, has helped people all over the world discover the emotional root cause of their mental, emotional and physical suffering so they can heal themselves. Today’s show is a call to action to work on your emotional health, not only for your sake, but for those you love. | #47: The Sexualization of Teen and Tween Girls. What Parents Of Both Girls and Boys Can Do | 11 Apr 2023 | 00:39:00
Experts agree that social media is to blame for the huge increase in the decline of teen girls’ mental health over the past few years. While boy’s mental health has also suffered, especially due to COVID, it’s the girls’ which has taken a nosedive. Cyberbullying, competition between peers and the constant barrage of unrealistic and sexualized images of influencers to compare themselves to. The never-ending stream of filtered and perfected images of young women and teens in their social media feed makes it impossible to escape. Influencers and even “beautiful friends” put endless pressure on girls to be skinny but curvy, with flawless skin, plumped lips, and long silky hair. These images create the belief that their sole value rests in their looks and sex appeal. For many girls, their entire self-worth rests on this belief.
Join me this week to discuss the sexualization of girls and find out how you can help your daughter or your son combat this pervasive and harmful issue. | #46: Using Motivational Interviewing For A Better Relationship With Your Teen, With Dr. Emily Kline | 04 Apr 2023 | 00:59:01
Therapists and other professionals often use a style of communication with their patients, called motivational interviewing. The method uses open-ended questions and reflective listening to help people find their inner motivation for change. It was originally developed back in the 1980s to help patients who were ambivalent about addressing their substance use disorders. Since then, it has been used in many different professional settings. Dr. Emily Kline, a professor at Boston University School of Medicine felt motivational interviewing could be used in the family setting and through her research with hundreds of parents has shown that indeed it can be extremely beneficial. Join me as I talk to Dr. Kline about these conversational tools that can be used with your adolescent (whether a teen or young adult), to discuss any issue and encourages them to solve their own problems. She outlines her 5-step guide for parents in her new book, The School of Hard Talks, with a simplified version contained in her free online e-course at The School of Hard Talks Online.
