#229: What's Behind Your Teen's School Refusal, And How Do You Get Them There?02 Sep 202500:18:04

Struggling to get your teen or tween to school? You're not alone.

If your teen is refusing to get out of bed for school, constantly leaving early, or complaining of physical symptoms like headaches and stomach aches when it's time for school, this isn't laziness or defiance—it's likely school refusal, a real emotional and physical response that affects up to 25% of teens aged 13 to 18.

Listen in as I explain the difference between school refusal and truancy, reveal the underlying issue driving this behavior, and provide actionable strategies for parents feeling pressured by schools and unsure of their options.

#140: What Teens And Tweens Really Wish Their Parents Understood24 May 202400:31:11

As it turns out, teens and tweens across the globe feel there’s a lot that parents just don’t understand.

Today I’m bringing you the most common and often repeated of these issues that I’ve gathered from therapists, teachers, and various adults who've worked with teens for decades. Plus I’ve found much written by teens themselves including some very colorful comments from Quora and Reddit.

#139: Teenagers, Alcohol, Permissiveness, Parties. What Parents Need To Know 21 May 202400:32:37

Today, I'm talking to you about your teens and alcohol. I'll answer LOTS of questions for you, including:

  • Does allowing your teen or tween to have a sip of wine or beer with you, prevent them from being problem drinkers?
  • Does providing a place for your teens to drink with friends, keep them safer than they would be out partying elsewhere?
  • Should you expect that your teens are going to drink alcohol and try to teach them "responsible drinking"?
  • Should you drink in front of your teens or keep alcohol in your home?

I cover all of this and more in today's episode.

#138: The Truth About Why Your Teen Is Lying To You, And What To Do About It17 May 202400:25:26

Did you know that 98% of teens lie about at least one issue or another? And guess what? The general consensus among researchers and mental health professionals is that this is not only normal, but it would be a little worrisome if they didn’t lie a bit.

The good news is, this is not a character flaw or a sign that they’re going to grow up to be a liar. By the time people reach adulthood, about three-quarters are consistently honest. The big spike in the chart during adolescence is normal, but why and how do you deal with it?

Jump in and have a listen so you’ll understand this phenomenon better and be equipped to handle it when it happens (because it likely will).

Listen in and I’ll tell you how.

#135: The Foundational Series Day 6 – Coaching Your Teen Through Their Emotions07 May 202400:28:55

What do you do when your teen or tween is acting like a toddler - when they're spewing their unpleasant emotions all over the place? Do you ignore them? Tell them to calm down? Get upset yourself?

Well, today I want to talk to you about how you can use this opportunity to help your teenager develop their emotional intelligence - specifically, their emotional awareness and emotional regulation. This technique is called emotion coaching and it not only helps your teen calm down in that moment, but it gradually helps them learn how to  manage those emotions themselves.

This technique not only works for teens and tweens but younger children as well. Join me today and learn how to bring more peace into your family.

#133: The Foundational Series Day 4 - Your Control Versus Your Teen's Control30 Apr 202400:21:39

Have you realized yet that you can't parent a teenager the way you parented them as a child? It's a hard truth. After your kid hits puberty, if you keep trying to manage them and parent them the way you did when they were a child, things will not go well.

Parenting a teen or tween the way you parented them as a child, will guarantee years of power struggles and behavior problems. Instead, you must learn to pivot and give your teen or tween more control, more respect and more power to make decisions (as well as mistakes).

So many parents get this wrong and then struggle for years trying to figure out how to get their teenager to behave the way they want them to. The answer? Change your own behavior.

#132: The Foundational Series Day 3 - Why Your Teen Does Such Risky Things26 Apr 202400:18:46

Why? Why? Why? Why do teens do the things they do? As the Parent of a teenager, you're probably used to asking yourself this question. If your teen or tween has ever done anything they've always promised they'd never do, you're in good company.

The way the adolescent brain works...well, let's just say, it can be baffling for parents. So, learning the "Why" behind your teen's thoughts, emotions and behavior is extremely import. It allows you to have more empathy, regulate your own emotions about their actions and therefore reign in the conflict. Join me in this episode and you're going to be ahead of the game!

#131: The Foundation Series Day 2 - Your Teen's Emotional Behavior23 Apr 202400:15:05

This is Day 2 of an 8-part series to explain the foundational principles of parenting teens. These are the "basics" that you need to understand to parent your teenagers with less conflict and more connection (plus have more influence in their lives and even change their behavior).

Today, I continue talking about the changes occurring  in your teenager's brain.  Today, I continue talking about the changes occurring  in your teenager's brain. Specifically, I'll explain how their amygdala (the emotional center of the brain) is super sensitive, which causes them to be much more emotional - as in angry, frustrated, annoyed, irritable, moody, grumpy....

#228: Understanding Your Thoughts And Emotions Will Help You Parent Your Teen26 Aug 202500:26:32

Thoughts lead to emotions, which lead to actions. If we don't take time to examine our thinking, we can become stuck in some very unproductive cycles in parenting our teenagers (and in other relationships).

Just because we think something doesn't make it true or correct. And if our thoughts are untrue, what does that mean for our emotions and behavior?

Today I talk about how cognitive biases, distortions, assumptions and shortcuts in our thinking can keep us in some very negative cycles of emotions and behavior. The more you think about your thinking, the more emotionally aware you become, which leads to greater emotional regulation.

#130: The Foundation Series Day 1 - Your Teen's Brain Is The Problem 19 Apr 202400:14:13

Do you ever think, "Why would they do that?" "Why are they so irrational?" "Why can't they just do what they're supposed to do when they're supposed to do it?"

You and every other parent with a kid between the ages of 10 and 25 have, no doubt, had these thoughts several times a day, most days of the week! It's baffling and frustrating to think your teen or tween could do better and chooses not to. But is that actually what's going on?

Join me in this first episode of an 8-part series to explain the foundational principles you need to understand to parent your teenagers with less conflict and more connection, plus have more influence in their lives and even change their behavior. I kick off the series explaining why your teen has less control over their thoughts, feelings and behavior than you think.

#129: Your Teen Could Be Extorted Or Abused By Online Predators and Criminals16 Apr 202400:29:31

The number of things we have to warn our teenagers and children about these days can be overwhelming. And when it comes to the wild, wild, west of the internet, it seems there's something new every few months.

As much as we'd like to think these things can't happen to our teens, they can and do - everyday. There are many extremely depraved individuals online who make it their job to target, groom, and extort kids and teens. They pose as someone your child's age, gain their trust, trick them and then either force them to do things online or extort them for money. It's unthinkable, but very, very real and happening across the globe.

Don't think it can't happen to your teenager or your child. It happens every day to families who felt the same way. Join me today as I explain what's going on, how to talk to your teens about it and what to do if the unthinkable happens.

#128: Could Your Teen Become The Subject Of AI Generated Child Pornography? 12 Apr 202400:14:19

It seems that there's just no end to the things that parents of teens and tweens have to worry about these days. And technology seems to always be up there at the top of the list, somehow.

Well, today I'm going to talk to you about something that's probably not even on your radar (but really should be); AI generated child pornography. Your teenager could literally be walking down the hall at school, minding their own business while a classmate generates a pornographic image of them, using their fully-clothed and totally innocent image.

Listen in to learn what AI generated porn is, how it happens, what the laws says and what you can do about it.

#126: “Gas Station Weed”, Delta-8, THCA-Your Teen Can Get High Legally05 Apr 202400:23:56

What the heck is going on down at the convenience store or corner vape shop? They're selling something that looks a whole lot like marijuana, cannabis, or weed. And this stuff (otherwise known as "gas station weed") can get people even higher than the marijuana sold at the legal dispensaries that contain the high-producing, delta-9 THC.

Even worse, this stuff is being sold legally to teens in many states! What is it? It's delta-8 THC, delta-10 THC, HHC, THCA, THCO and other chemically extracted hemp derivatives, which are mostly unregulated (and contain no telling what).

I'll explain what these substances are, where they come from, how they're legal and what you should do if you find your teen is smoking it or "real marijuana".

#125: How Do You Get Your Teens and Tweens To Cooperate With You?02 Apr 202400:22:30

Today's episode has been a long time coming. Getting your teen to do what they're supposed to do (or not do what they're not supposed to do) is a sticking point for so many parents. You probably feel like a broken record most days and then still can't get the cooperation you want (and many times end up in arguments and power struggles).

Well, in this episode I review a) the basics that you need to understand even before you try to get cooperation, b) what you shouldn't do and, c) different methods you can try for cutting back on the conflict and getting them to cooperate. You'll want to listen!

#124: Eye Rolls and Attitude. What to Do and More Importantly, What Not to Do (with Your Zen Friend)29 Mar 202400:25:09

Today's episode is a "feed drop"! Lauren Wolfe, host of Your Zen Friend, is dropping into our podcast feed to bring you a special episode of her podcast, addressing an issue you likely know all too well; attitude, disrespect, eye rolls, etc.

Lauren has graciously agreed to let me air this fabulous episode as I am still dealing with my ailing mother this week. So, listen up because Lauren is going to talk about the best ways to respond to your teenager's "back talk" and explain why the way you may usually respond, is not so helpful. You're going to get a lot out of this episode.

#122: What To Do When Your Teen Is Using or Abusing Substances (with HopeStream’s Brenda Zane)19 Mar 202400:51:04

If your teen is experimenting with weed, alcohol, or other substances, it’s a very scary feeling. For some of us it’s downright terrifying and triggering.

Well today’s guest went through it all with her son and it was as bad as it gets. Brenda Zane almost saw her son die from his drug abuse.

Thankfully, he is now drug free, in college and helping others with their struggles. Brenda shares so much helpful information today; what to do and how to think about it, if you find that vape pen or bottle of liquor in their room, how to talk to them about it, how to get to the root of the problem, and how to educate yourself.

Brenda has committed herself to help other parents with this struggle. You can check out her podcast, HopeStream and her membership, the HopeStream Community. She also has a wonderful free guide called “Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Misuses Drugs and Alcohol

You don’t want to miss this conversation because even if your teen has not experimented with drugs or alcohol, you want to have these skills at the ready, if they ever do.

#227: Why Is Your Teen Always So Angry and Emotionally Dysregulated?19 Aug 202500:17:29

Neurotypical teens, teens without any mental health disorders at all, experience emotional dysregulation from time to time (some more than others). This is simply a byproduct of their changing brain and an oversensitive threat detector (the brain's amygdala).

But teens with ADHD, certain mood disorders, and personality disorders are much more likely to experience intense mood swings and even more pronounced emotional dysregulation. And that's not the only symptom overlap between these disorders.

As you can imagine, this can cause real issues for a professional diagnosis and for parents trying to find an answer and help for their teens and tweens.

Today I'm going to talk to you about the problem with getting a definitive diagnosis. Plus, I want to tell you about one seldomly mentioned symptom of ADHD that only adds to the confusion and baffles many mental health professionals.

It's critical for you to be aware of these confounding issues so you insure your teen receives the proper treatment.

#120: Your Anxiety About Your Teen’s Behavior Can Make Their Behavior Worse12 Mar 202400:21:26

I talked about parenting out of fear in the very first episode of this podcast. Because my own fear is what led me down such a long hard path with my son, I wanted to make sure you were aware of the issues it causes. Now that I've been able to work for a couple of years on refining this message, I'm back to share again why we must not let our anxious thoughts derail our parenting.

This issue comes up over and over in the Speaking of Teens Facebook group and in Parent Camp. Fear for our Teenager's future, about how they're messing up, and screwing up their life, etc. - it's something so many of us have dealt with at one time or another. And that fear causes us to feel like if we don't do something major or do something right this minute, we're going to lose our child, let them down, allow them to mess up everything and ruin their life.

And guess what happens when you start thinking that way? You question, assume, lecture, snoop, track, yell, punish, and overreact. That behavior, in turn, builds an impenetrable wall between you and your teen and increases their negative behavior.

In this episode, I’ll help you figure out if you are parenting out of fear, explain how it impacts the relationship with your teen and their behavior. Most importantly, I'll explain how to turn things around if your fear has already caused a backlash with your teen.

#118: How To Navigate Parenting Teens With An Ex, Your Spouse, Or Partner (Coparenting with Aurisha Smolarski)05 Mar 202400:38:04

Whether you’re married, divorced, or happily cohabitating with your partner, if you have teenagers, you’re not only dealing with them but with your coparent’s (and possibly your partner’s) opinion on how to parent them.

Why do we all bring such differing views into our parenting and what can we do when we don’t agree? And, by the way, what role does your new partner play in it all?

Join me for a conversation with Aurisha Smolarski, a Los Angeles based licensed marriage and family therapist with a special affinity for helping parents get along and parent in a more united way. Aurisha has negotiated coparenting with an ex-spouse herself and understands how difficult it is. And she’s recently published a book called, Cooperative Co-Parenting for Secure Kids: The Attachment Theory Guide to Raising Kids in Two Homes.

There’s something for you in this episode no matter with whom you share parenting duties.

#116: Getting Help From The School When Your Teen or Tween Refuses To Go (with Cynthia Coufal)27 Feb 202400:35:19

I don't believe there are many parents of a teen or tween who hasn't dealt with some struggle over getting their kid to go to school. School refusal happens for all sorts of reasons, from mental health disorders like anxiety or depression to dealing with a bully or learning issues. But whatever the reason your teenager refuses or avoids going to school, you must come up with a solution. And often that solution isn't as easy as the school and other parents think.

In today's episode I talk with Cynthia Coufal, the host of The Teen Anxiety Maze and a retired school counselor who has all sorts of ideas about getting your school to help you get your teen back to school. And in the last portion of the episode I talk to you about taking charge of the situation and the best way to handle advocating for your teenager.

#115: How Controlling, Managing, and Rescuing Your Teen, Sets Them Up For Failure23 Feb 202400:13:41

Your teen's autonomy, the level to which they are allowed to make their own decisions, their ability to handle mistakes and the natural consequences from those mistakes - all of this has a huge impact on their later independence, and ability to cope as an emerging adult.

Today I’m going to talk to you about how, despite your best intentions to protect your child from all the bad stuff, keep them out of trouble, make sure they’re successful, that they make good choices, that they don’t fall flat on their face, you could be doing just the opposite and making them more dependent on you and less able to handle life as young adult.

#114: How To Help Your Teen Avoid Vaping Or Quit If They've Already Started20 Feb 202400:31:45

Today, in the final instalment in this series on vaping, I discuss how to talk to your teen or tween about vaping, how to help them avoid it if they haven't started, and how to help them quit if they already have.

I highlight refusal skills that can work for almost any situation where they need to avoid a negative or risky activity. I also explain the reward system, the adolescent decision making process and how you can use the findings from a scientific study to hopefully influence them to avoid or quit vaping (without threatening their autonomy.) I'll explain a little about the quitting process and hook you up with some excellent information and resources that will help them.

#113: Why Can Teens Still Get Their Hands On Dessert-Flavored Vape Products?19 Feb 202400:33:04

Today's episode is a bit of a bonus. I've been really confused as to why there are still all these fruity, desert-flavored vaping products, vape pens and e-cigarettes on the shelves in the US, when I thought Juul was told to remove theirs the market. So I did some major digging into the backstory of vaping regulations and where things stand today. I actually think this is an important episode for you to hear so you can explain to your teenager how vaping goes the disposable, desert or fruity flavored vapes is even more risky than we thought.

#112: Just How Much Should You Snoop, Monitor, And Track Your Teen16 Feb 202400:15:57

How "up in your teen's business" do you get? How much is too much monitoring, snooping, digging and tracking? Do you let them know you're going to be doing checking on them up front? Or, are you more of a covert operator? Do you know what difference it all makes? A lot. One of the most important things to a teenager (or a tween) is their autonomy. And if you threaten that, you'll be locked in never-ending power struggles. Find out how to navigate balancing your parental control with their need for autonomy and privacy.

#111: The Truth About Teenagers And Vaping Related Lung Injury And Illness13 Feb 202400:31:11

Today, I continue the series on vaping that we started last week with my interview with Daniel Ament in episode #109. I hope you shared Daniel's episode with your teen (and maybe even gave his information to someone at your school so he could speak to all the students.)

Vaping is ubiquitous in high school and more and more middle schoolers are taking up the habit every single day. Just because you've not seen evidence that your teen vapes or your teen has not admitted it to you, or they've promised you they'll never do it, does not mean that it isn't happening.

This week I'm explaining how the serious risk of lung damage associated with vaping and e-cigarettes didn't end right before COVID when the CDC stopped tracking the EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury) epidemic. Simply put - COVID took the spot light off this other serious risk to public health.

But in fact, there have been thousands upon thousands of cases in the US alone of vaping related lung injury or illness due to vaping, e-cigarettes or dabbing since then. As a matter of fact, there have been two additional double lung transplants for vaping related lung damage.

I'll explain what's going on here and debunk some of the myths that vaping is "healthy" (that your teen may still be hanging onto.)

Next week I’ll be addressing how to help your teen resist starting vaping and how to help them stop.

#110: How To Deal With Your Teen’s Emotions When You Can’t Deal With Your Own09 Feb 202400:34:52

You have to admit that you never knew another human being could evoke such a broad range of emotions from you. You love your teenager more than anything on the planet, you'd go to the ends of the earth for them (you pretty much already have) but...good God can they ever make you mad! It's like they know just the right amount of tone and attitude to throw in with their emotional meltdown, to bring out the very worst in you.

You can do better. And you can help them do better. Today we're going to talk about how your connection with your teen greatly depends on your awareness and understanding of both your teen's emotions and your own.

#109: Your Teen Is Vaping Nicotine or THC - What To Do And What To Avoid Doing (with Daniel Ament)06 Feb 202400:32:13

Today’s episode will be as significant for your teen’s to hear as it will be for you so please share. It may even be more important to share it with your younger kids who’ve not considered vaping yet.

21-year-old Daniel Ament shares some much-needed insight into the world of teens and vaping (whether it’s nicotine or THC.) You’ll learn how easy it is for them to vape without you ever knowing, why it’s so difficult to avoid vaping to begin with and why punishing them or taking their vape away doesn’t solve anything.

Daniel talks about vaping a lot. He’s talked about it at schools, in print, television and on podcasts. That’s because Daniel suffered major life-threatening physical injuries from the less than 12-month time period that he vaped. His story is a cautionary tale but should also prove motivational for your teens (he speaks their language.)

This is the first episode in another series: Vaping. I have at least 2 more episodes coming over the next couple of Tuesdays because I know this likely impacts your teen even if you aren't yet aware.

#108: How To Connect With A Teenager That Will Have Nothing To Do With You02 Feb 202400:21:53

This is the 3rd episode in a series on connecting with your teen.
First episode in the series #104
Second episode in the series #106

This question comes up all the time, "I know I'm supposed to connect with my teenager, but how do I do it when they don't talk to me and ignore everything I say?"

Teenagers aren't usually that keen on talking to their parents on a regular basis, no matter what. But if your tween or teen feels like you treat them like a child, have no respect for their opinions, decisions or input, and feels like all you do is nag, scold, correct and lecture them...guess what? They're not going to want to be around you much at all. Think about it. Would you?

Today I continue the series on connecting with your teen or tween by discussing what it means to support your teen's autonomy and what's going on in their brain that makes this so very important.

#107: How Do We Move Past Our Own Upbringing To Parent Our Teens “Better?”30 Jan 202400:26:26

Of course, the way we were raised influences the way we parent our own kids. Did you know it also has a major impact on our romantic relationships? Even friendships and work relationships?

The way our parents interacted with us, beginning in infancy, (specifically, the way in which they did or did not meet our physical and emotional needs) forms the template for all of our relationships. It's something researchers call attachment style and it's not only fascinating but crucial to understand about ourselves.

If you have an insecure attachment style, luckily, there are steps you can take that will not only change things for your family now, but for future generations.

#106: WAY More Positive Interactions Than Negative = Connection With Your Teen26 Jan 202400:28:54

This is the 2nd episode in a series on connecting with your teen.
First episode in the series #104

If the relationship with your teen or tween is suffering, I want you to consider something. How close would you feel to someone who you believe treats you like a child, constantly reminds you to do things you already know to do, complains about every tiny infraction, and makes no attempt to understand the stress you're under?

Well, that's likely how your teenager feels pretty regularly. Their brain perceives so many things as negative (even when neutral!)

Reminders, questions, corrections, statements, a tone of voice, a facial expression, all can be very negatively interpreted by your teenager (even if you don't really intend it that way.)

You've got some work to do to maintain your connection with them. Let's get to it.

#105: Forming A Values-Based Partnership With Your Teens And Tweens (with Lainie Liberti)23 Jan 202400:46:06

In today's episode I'm talking with Lainie Liberti about the concept of "partnership parenting." Lainie's parenting philosophy is that parenting, especially during the teen years, should be a collaboration between you and your teen, based on a set of core values; both the parents' and the teens'. The point of this effort is to build a strong connection, mutual respect and openness.

If you don't know who Lainie is, she's a teen mentor, co-founder (with her 24-year-old son, Miro) of Project World School and the author of Seen, Heard and Understood: Parenting and Partnering with Teens for Greater Mental Health, in which she discusses the concept of partnership parenting and so much more. Lainie traveled the world with her son while "schooling" him, and is considered a pioneer in the "worldschooling" movement" and very much practiced what she preaches (wait until you hear what her son says about her!) She's mentored hundreds of teens and studied parenting, psychology, emotional intelligence, etc. for years and really knows her stuff. You're going to appreciate her fresh perspective on parenting your teens.

This is the 1st episode in a series on connecting with your teen.
Second episode in the series #106
Third episode in the series #108

Connecting with your teens is not just a nice sentiment - it's critically necessary to have any influence in their lives. Without connection, it will be extremely difficult to keep them physically safe or mentally healthy. Connection might not be what you think but it's probably easier than you've imagined.

Listen to this first episode in a continuing series on building connection with your teens as I discuss one simple thing you can do to "start the ball rolling."

#103: Want to Change Your Teen’s Behavior? Stop Parenting Like Your Grandma! (with Aly Pain)16 Jan 202400:57:20

Today, I’m joined by Aly Pain to discuss how most of us are still parenting using an outdated model from several generations ago, which is derailing the connection with our teenagers and fueling their misbehavior.

Unfortunately, we don't even realize how we’ve simply accepted many of these parenting myths and attitudes as truth, despite the mounds of scientific evidence to the contrary. And when we attempt to make the necessary changes with our teenagers, we’re often met with disapproval and push-back from family and friends.

We’re talking about these misconceptions to set the record straight on common concerns like respect, connection, compliance, and living up to their potential. Aly explains how you can begin parenting your teenager in a way that leads to increased connection (yes, she’s going to explain what that really means!) and lasting change in their behavior.

Aly's passion is empowering parents to build healthy, respectful relationships with their teens without giving up or giving in. She's been featured in the New York Post, ABC Nightly News and the Rachael Ray Show.

#101: Your High Schooler Needs Some Self-Discovery Before Those College Visits09 Jan 202400:59:18

Even if your kid is still in middle school, you'll want to tune in to today's episode to help ease your mind a bit. I'm talking with my friend and fellow podcaster, Sonia Cacique, of the College and Career Ready podcast about some of the most important steps in career and college planning. Hint: we're not talking about grades, college and university tours, or working on the dreaded application.

The initial steps your teens need to take to get ready to pursue college and/or a career is much more personal. We can't expect young people to have their future all figured out before leaving for college or entering the workforce. The most important part of this journey to adulthood is learning about what's possible for themselves. You're going to really appreciate this one!

If you’d like your teen to work with Sonia one-on-one, she has a program called Discover U where she coaches your teen on all of these issues we just discussed and more

#99: Little Changes To Make A Big Difference In The Relationship With Your Teen02 Jan 202400:32:41

Since it’s the start of a new year I thought I’d do a show about change; how you can make 10 specific “little changes” that will go a long way in improving the communication and the relationship with your teenager.

These are very simple modifications in how you say things, how often you say things, and how you respond to things they do or say. I also discuss a couple of little things you can do in just a couple if minutes per day that can change so much for your own mental health as well as the relationship with your teen or tween.

These tiny changes are all very doable, take minimal effort (well, maybe some mental effort), and once you get going, they can lead to such a huge difference. Give them a try!
