(00:47:06) Thank Yous and Goodbyes

Kula Shaker's Crispian Mills joins Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak to discuss the George Harrison soundtrack score for Joe Massot's 1968 film, Wonderwall. The score was the 1st project of any of the Beatles after their breakup, and it was Harrison's 1st time as a soundtrack composer. The soundtrack features many Indian musicians like Aashish Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shankar Ghosh, and Mahapurush Misra, It also features The Remo Four, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr.

Ironically, the Oasis song that shares the same name helped renew interest in the film even though the song "Wonderwall" does not sound anything like the music that Harrison created for Wonderwall.

Erin Marlow of It's a Fandom Thing joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the 1994 Oliver Stone film, Natural Born Killers. It began as a Quentin Tarantino script before Oliver Stone turned it into an entirely different thing, which is just one of many controversies that surround this film. Trent Reznor currated the soundtrack and contributed two Nine Inch Nails to the soundtrack, specifically writing "Burn" for the film. The soundtrack also features songs from Leonard Cohen, Lard, L7, The Cowboy Junkies, Peter Gabriel and more.

Brandice Wilson and Nicole Barlow join Ryan Pak for one of the last episodes of the season. We talk about the soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s 1996 groundbreaking film, Trainspotting, a fim/soundtrack so beloved that it spawned a companion soundtrack. This is one of Nicole’s favorite films and it’s one that Brandice has just watched for the 1st time, so there are definitely some differences in opinion in this episode. We talk about some of the film’s most iconic scenes, why Oasis is not on the soundtrack, and whether Ewen McGregor’s gaunt appearance in the film is attractive or not. Nicole Barlow On All the Bowie Connections on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Soundtrack26 Oct 202000:51:36
Advertising copywriter Nicole Barlow joins Ryan Pak to discuss the soundtrack to the 2004 Wes Anderson film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, a film that initially received mixed reviews but has gone on to garner a greater appreciation as time has gone on. One aspect of the movie that was praised from the outset was the soundtrack to the film, the Seu Jeorge covers of David Bowie, in particular. We talk about his versions of the Bowie songs as well as seeing Jeorge perform the songs live after the death of Bowie. We also talk about how almost every song on the soundtrack is connected to Bowie in one way or another and we talk about Mark Mothersbaugh's score which would be the last of his 4 straight collaborations with Wes Anderson. Finally, Nicole details a trip to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco where she was able to see how much of Zissou is based on Jacque Cousteau up close and in person.

Guilty Hearts Guitarist Edgar Rodriguez on the Airheads Soundtrack and the Film's Rock & Roll Jokes28 Sep 202000:47:05
Guilty Hearts guitarist Edgar Rodriguez returns to the podcast to talk about the soundtrack to Michael Lehmann’s 1994 comedy Airheads, which has become a cult classic 26 years after it debuted in theaters. We talk about the cast, the infamous ransom list, and many of the music reference heavy jokes of the film, which were probably lost on film critics back in 1994. We chat about the hard rock heavy soundtrack loaded with plenty of oddities like a Motorhead song with Ice-T, Anthrax covering The Smiths, and 4 Non Blondes covering Van Halen. Edgar gives some background on a local radio station power struggle that may have inspired the plot of the film and he shares about his time interning at a radio station and the realities of the not so glamorous music industry. He talks about how the film and his interest in the soundtrack helped him better understand Shakespeare as a freshmen in high school and how many of the songs continue to connect him to scenes in the film. We talk about how Garbage’s “#1 Crush” was almost omitted from the soundtrack and how Radiohead actually asked Baz Luhrmann to omit the song they wrote for the film from the soundtrack. Edgar Rodriguez on the Bands He Discovered from the Dogs in Space Soundtrack (1986)31 Aug 202000:44:33
Guilty Hearts guitarist Edgar Rodriguez joins the podcast to talk about the soundtrack to the 1986 film Dogs In Space, which stars the late Michael Hutchence (of INXS) and is directed by music video director Richard Lowenstein (best known for his work with INXS). Though the film has strong INXS ties, the soundtrack actually skews more punk and lo-fi, highlighting bands from the late 1970s Australian punk scene as well as Iggy Pop, The Birthday Party, Boys Next Door, Gang of Four and Brian Eno. We also briefly chat about the INXS singing competition reality show from the 2000s where the band tried to find a new frontman to replace Hutchence and the art of being a frontman.

Beverly Encina on Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2006) Soundtrack and Its Celebration of Late 90s Hip Hop24 Aug 202000:44:58
Beverly Encina joins Ryan Pak to talk about the soundtrack to Michel Gondry's 2006 concert film, Dave Chappelle's Block Party. Even though we didn't know each other back in 2006, we are linked by many of the artists featured in the film such as The Roots, Kanye, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and more. We reflect on how we got into hip hop and how we ended up finding out about these artists. We also talk about the night of a Lauryn Hill show we attended where the pre-game was almost as memorable as the main event.

Music Rewind's Stephen Epley on Discovering Soul Music via the Soundtrack to The Commitments (1991)02 Dec 202401:05:52
Stephen Epley, host of Music Rewind, joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the soundtrack to Alan Parker's 1991 film, The Commitments. The film deserverdly racked up nominations at the BAFTAS, Golden Globes and the Oscars, but the soundtrack is what really took off in the US and around the world. It went 2x Platinum in the US, 3x Platinum in the UK, and it was a huge hit in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. It was so successful that they released a 2nd soundtrack, The Commitments Vol. 2.

The film follows a band of Irish teens that are put together to sing covers of American soul songs, "songs of the working class" claims manager, Jimmy Rabbit. This soundtrack was Stephen's gateway to soul music since in 1991, discovering music was not as simple as it is in 2024.

We Discuss:
Alan Parker's other rock and roll projects that made him the perfect director for this film
How this movie launched Glen Hansard's journey of writing music for films
How authentic the music feels in the movie and why that is
The film's legacy even though there weren't any "breakout" stars from the film

Soundtrack Your Life Ep 101 - Soundtracking Monopoly w/ Scott Interrante and Tara Giancaspro12 Aug 202400:59:59
(After a short hiatus, we're back, and we'll be back to releasing 2 episodes of month until December!)This is the Greatest Song that I've Ever Heard in My Entire Life's Scott Interrante and our favorite substacker, Tara Giancaspro return to Soundtrack Your Life to help Nicole and Ryan soundtrack the recently announced film Monopoly (Margot Robbie’s Lucky Chap Productions has signed up to make it). Whether it gets made or not is anyone’s guess since Monopoly has a long history of directors / producers trying to make this game into a movie.Once again, our crew is tasked with coming up with a plot for the film and then a soundtrack full of needle drops. From the beginning of the film, to the end credits, our hosts and guests come up with songs for every big plot development in this fake film.

Film Rage's Jim On His Favorite Songs on the Saltburn Soundtrack (2023) that are not "Murder on the Dancefloor"10 Jun 202401:10:09
Jim from the Film Rage podcast returns to Soundtrack Your Life to talk to Nicole and Ryan about the soundtrack to the 2023 Emerald Fennell film, Saltburn. Jim was previously a guest for our episode on David Byrne’s True Stories. The movie had a moment in 2023 with its infamous needle drop of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor”, which is used in one of the film’s most famous scenes. The soundtrack is full of songs from 2007 and older (the movie takes place in 2007), and there are indie and pop acts like Arcade Fire, MGMT, Bloc Party, Girls Aloud and Cold War Kids to remind you that you’re in 2007.

We Discuss:
  • Our favorite non-"Murder on the Dancefloor" needledrops
  • The juxtaposition between the songs and Anthony Willis' score
  • Other songs from the aughts that could've fit the soundtrack / mood of the movie
  • What worked and didn't work for us in this divisive film
