On the 10th of April, the ReMap report, detailing the experiences of Black music makers and industry professionals within the Liverpool City Region and making recommendations to pioneer change, was released to the public. In collaboration with the Liverpool City Region Music Board, I was invited to record the panel discussion held as part of the report's launch event at District. The panel was hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside's Ngunan Adamu, and features creative consultant Yaw Owusu, Black Lives in Music ambassador Mica Sefia, UK Music's Head of Diversity Eunice Obianagha, and the Liverpool City Region Race Equality Hub's Emy Onuora & Brodie Arthur. They discuss why Liverpool's music scene needs to be more inclusive, how the success of Black artists in Liverpool goes uncelebrated, what needs to change and the wonderful diversity of Black British music. That’s why I sat down with again with Grace Goodwin, an artist mentor at Future Yard and an expert in music law, to make all things legal a LOT less complicated.
We talk about the different relationships artists need contracts for, how record deals really work, how to claim extra income with music publishing, how to avoid dodgy deals and why you should make your friends sign a contract when you write a song together. I know that last one sounds crazy but if you hear her out it makes a lot of sense.
