John Beasley From Invisible Piano to Unlimited Miles04 May 202600:32:57

Pianist, composer, and arranger John Beasley joins host Steve Roby for an in-depth discussion about his extraordinary career, his new album Invisible Piano, and an upcoming all-star Miles Davis centennial tribute concert in San Francisco.

Beasley explores his musical roots — from a household full of musicians to early influences like The Beatles, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, and Quincy Jones — and reflects on his journey through jazz, film, television, and large ensemble composition.

He talks about how a trip to a Stuttgart art gallery, and the surrealist paintings of Max Ernst inspired the creative process behind Invisible Piano, recorded with Germany's SWR Big Band. The album includes five original compositions and two new arrangements, such as a deeply personal rendition of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain."

John also previews ‘Unlimited Miles: Miles Davis at 100,’ an all-star jazz centennial celebration at the Presidio Theater in San Francisco on May 14, featuring Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Sean Jones, Terry Gully, and Ben Williams.

Music featured in this episode:

  • “Fire and Rain” — arranged and performed by John Beasley (from Invisible Piano)
  • “Invisible Piano” (title track) — John Beasley with the SWR Big Band (from Invisible Piano)

Resilience, Roots, and the Road Ahead: A Conversation with David Weiss30 Apr 202600:51:02

Jazz trumpeter and composer David Weiss joins host Steve Roby for a wide-ranging conversation about a life built on music. From his early days in Queens, where he absorbed hard rock, fusion, and European avant-garde sounds, to leading some of contemporary jazz's most distinctive ensembles, Weiss reflects on the organic path that brought him to where he is today.

We dig into his latest album, Auteur (Origin Records) — a title he half-jokingly suggests should end with a question mark — and explore what it means to maintain a recognizable musical identity across multiple projects. David shares the stories behind two tracks from the album: "Resilience," a tribute to pianist George Cables, and "The Other Side of the Mountain," inspired by Ron Carter's reflections on perseverance and a Martin Luther King speech on the long arc of progress.

David also opens up about The Cookers — his hard-bop supergroup approaching its 20th year — the recent Kennedy Center cancellation amid the current political climate, and the challenge of keeping a band together when the musicians you love most are in their 80s and still outplaying everyone in the room.

The conversation ends with a look ahead to the David Weiss Sextet's upcoming five-city West Coast tour, featuring two sets at SF Jazz's Joe Henderson Lab in San Francisco.

Megan Slankard, on her inspirations, career experiences, and current album05 Sep 202400:32:51

In this episode of Backstage Sonoma, host Steve Roby interviews multi-talented musician Megan Slankard. They discuss Megan’s inspirations, career experiences, and current album.

Megan shares her early influences, most notably The Beatles, whose music profoundly impacted her. According to Megan, The Beatles were a gateway that led her to explore classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Heart before transitioning to a singer-songwriter style, all of which have shaped her unique sound.

As the conversation continued, Megan and Steve discussed her latest record, California and Other Stories, which she co-produced with Nashville producer Alex Wong.

Megan elaborates on her creative process, noting that the songs featured on California… were born from a period of profound personal change and adversities. "I call it my revenge record, even though names and places have been changed to protect the not-so-innocent," Megan quips, adding a touch of humor to the transformative nature of her music. They delve into how her monthly songwriting club on Patreon allowed her to explore different musical avenues and eventually pour her heart and soul into this album, dividing it into two thematic halves — one belligerent rock and roll, the other reflective and cinematic.

The duo also discusses the evolving music industry and its impact on artists like Megan. She voices her nostalgia for the bygone era when albums were central to the music experience, contrasting it with today's single-focused, streaming-driven landscape. “Music weirdly has become the background,” she observes, lamenting how the depth and artistry in albums are often overlooked.

Toward the end, Megan hints at exciting upcoming projects, including new singles and a unique coloring book that aligns with her songs. "Each picture you color will correspond with a song, and there will be lyrics," she explains. Her reflective take on the industry's changing landscape and her earnest dedication to her craft and fans make for an inspiring and insightful interview.

Greg mentions the initial line-up that included cellist Gretchen Yanover, highlighting their astrological connection as Leos. The band members delve into the unique genre label, cosmic folk rock, and share that their music embodies a philosophical mantra, quoting Joni Mitchell, "We are stardust, we are golden, we've got to get back to the garden." They describe their meaningful project, Argonauts of Sound, where they recorded music at spiritual and historical sites, enhancing their work’s introspective and cosmic elements.

Greg and Mitchell emphasize Two Lions’ collaborative and ever-changing nature in discussing the band's evolution and camaraderie among members. Throughout different iterations of the band, the current members — including Greg on violin, Mitchell as frontman and guitarist, Matt Reine on lead guitar, Diego Garcia on bass, and Justin Tchaikovsky on drums — have developed a deep bond. Greg reflects on their tours, saying, "The whole ascension has been beautiful, but the current group has just been an amazing group of human beings to travel with." As they discuss the band’s dynamic, Greg highlights the significance of mutual respect and collective creativity that drives their artistic journeys.

Looking ahead, the pair share exciting news about their latest projects. They discuss their new album "Golden Thread" and its accompanying movie, documenting their return to touring post-lockdown. The release party is set for September 7th at the Poly Klass Community Theater in Petaluma, featuring live performances and a screening by director Logan Fullington. Additionally, they reveal ongoing plans, such as their cover song album and tours across Ireland, the Pacific Northwest, and the East Coast. From Idol to Indie: Kris Allen Talks Creative Journey and the Making of His New Album, ‘Pole Vaulter’29 Aug 202400:27:05

Kris Allen, the humble singer-songwriter from Arkansas, skyrocketed to fame after winning the eighth season of American Idol in 2009. Since then, he has crafted a career defined by authenticity, musical exploration, and personal growth.

Now, with a new album, Pole Vaulter, on the horizon and a show at Mill Valley’s Sweetwater Music Hall just around the corner, Kris sat down with Backstage Sonoma’s Steve Roby to discuss his journey, influences, and the creative process behind his latest project.

Discovering His Sound: A Melting Pot of Influences

Kris Allen’s musical influences are as diverse as they are deep-rooted. “My parents were listening to a lot of The Eagles and Journey records,” Kris reminisces. “And then also nineties country was a deal... My first show was Reba McEntire, and my dad was obsessed with Garth Brooks.” Growing up in a household that cherished various genres meant that Kris had a broad musical palette from an early age.

As he ventured into his musical discoveries, Kris found himself drawn to the grooves of R&B and the power of early hip-hop. “When I first started finding my own music, it was artists like Michael Jackson, or  Boyz II Men, that sort of thing,” he shares.

This eclectic mix of influences—from country and classic rock to R&B and even early hip-hop—has been a defining factor in the evolution of Kris’s sound.

Lenny White On Miles Davis's Lessons15 Mar 202600:27:21

Show Notes

Drummer Lenny White experienced the Miles Davis story firsthand. As a teenager, Miles selected him to record Bitches Brew — not because Davis had heard him play, but based solely on word of mouth. That decision reveals a lot about how Miles worked.

In this conversation, Lenny explains the philosophy behind Miles's legendary leadership style: how he used metaphor instead of instructions, space instead of clutter, and intuition instead of explanation. From the famous "be the salt in a big pot of stew" directive to the idea that Miles only told you when you got it wrong — Lenny describes what it actually felt like to be shaped by one of music's greatest minds.

Lenny also shares what he's learned teaching the Miles Davis aesthetic at NYU Steinhardt and The New School, why Kind of Blue is just one entry point into a much larger story, and how the context of 20th-century music-making is something today's students have to consciously work to understand.

The episode ends with a preview of SFJAZZ's tribute to Miles Davis's acoustic years, featuring Lenny alongside Javon Jackson, Dr. Eddie Henderson, and others — a celebration of music that, as Lenny says, still raises questions worth asking 50 and 60 years later.

In this episode:

How Miles selected musicians — and what that reveals about his genius

The "pot of stew" lesson and the art of teaching through metaphor

What Miles taught by silence, withholding, and redirection

Why Kind of Blue isn't the whole picture

The difference between how music was made then vs. now — and why it matters for students

Teaching the Miles Davis aesthetic at NYU and The New School

What Lenny hopes audiences feel at the SF Jazz tribute

The Dynamic Energy of SUSU: Behind the Scenes with Liza Colby and Kia Warren28 Aug 202400:32:21

The story of SUSU’s inception is one of fate, mutual admiration, and a bit of New York City magic. Liza Colby’s psychedelic sensibilities met Kia Warren’s bluesy indie rock aesthetic, and the result was nothing short of electrifying. Both women have traversed a wide range of musical genres, including classic and heavy rock, and when they crossed paths, it was clear that something special was on the horizon.

“Our backgrounds span various genres, including rock and roll in all its forms,” Kia begins. “New York City has a very small community of Black women in rock and roll, so it felt inevitable that we would meet. Our connection was expedited through a mutual friend, Flannery, who raved about how much we’d love each other. And she was right.”

Liza adds, “When we started making music and performing together, we knew we were onto something. It was like the universe aligned, putting us in each other’s paths. We quickly developed a deep affection and admiration for each other as contemporaries in the NYC scene.”

The magic moment that sealed their collaboration happened at a club called Berlin, where Liza had a residency. After a chance encounter where Kia’s band filled in for a last-minute cancellation, they realized they had undeniable chemistry. They wrote their first song together in just 40 minutes—a song that ended up on their debut album.

“We were like, ‘Okay, we’re onto something,’” Liza recalls. “That was the beginning of what would become SUSU.”
