Limit the Pieces, Not the Styles: Disciplined Maximalism with Philip Mitchell19 Oct 202600:26:37

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

If your taste runs in more than one direction, this conversation is a good place to start. Canadian designer Philip Mitchell, author of Collected Interiors: Rooms That Tell a Story, loves too many things to settle on one style, and his rooms mix centuries and cultures without apology. What makes it work isn't limiting the styles. It's being picky about how many pieces are out at once, and giving each one enough breathing room that you notice the contrast between them. I call it disciplined maximalism. We take it apart using one entryway from his book, along with his trick for clients who can't say what they love: ask them what they don't. Photos are on the show notes page at SlowStyleHome.com.

A Great Mix Is a Good Conversation — with Nadia Watts28 Sep 202600:10:51

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this Think Like A Designer episode, I sit down with Nadia Watts, a Colorado-based interior designer who works all over the country, to look closely at a home filled with salvage-yard finds, family heirlooms, old-world antiques, and contemporary art.

It's about why some wildly mixed rooms feel deliberate while others just feel busy. The difference isn't matching. It's that every piece is in conversation with something else in the room: a color, a finish, or a material picked up and answered somewhere nearby.

Subscribe to see and hear the full portfolio review: a wall built for a painting, a powder room with one sconce on purpose, a hand-painted French chandelier that matches nothing in its room, and Nadia's family story as a descendant of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

This Is How You Train Your Eye. No Formula. Just Practice, with Sophie von Oertzen Williamson21 Sep 202600:07:28

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I sit down with Sophie von Oertzen Williamson, author of The Art of the Clash, to talk about pattern, color, and the mix — and end up talking about how long it actually takes to earn your own eye.

Sophie is 42 and has trained her eye across very different worlds: Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Singapore, Ohio, now Connecticut. At 28, she didn't have the aesthetic she has today. Not for lack of talent — she just hadn't lived those years yet.

Subscribe to see the full portfolio walkthrough, photo by photo, straight from her book — including the pink that took twenty color tests to get right.

Why a $195 Throw Blanket Is a Bargain — with Lauren Hidalgo of Awarehouse14 Sep 202600:06:55

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this guest episode, I sit down with Lauren Hidalgo, founder of the online marketplace Awarehouse, to talk about something we rarely stop to add up: what we're actually spending on the small stuff.

It's about how we assign value to what we buy — especially handmade objects — and the gap between what something costs and what it's actually worth. The $25 throw pillow doesn't feel like a real purchase. But enough of those add up to real money, spent on things with no story and a short life.

Subscribe to hear Lauren and me walk through four specific pieces — what they're made of, who made them, and what they actually cost you once you do the math on the alternative.

Your Home Has a Volume Control Panel. Aubrey Butcher Knows How to Use It.07 Sep 202600:08:51

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this Designers at Home episode, I tour the Dallas home of Aubrey Butcher — co-founder, with her husband Kale, of the tile company Riad Tile.

Every room has a volume control. Most of us only know how to turn it down — fewer things, blanker walls, quieter colors. Aubrey knows how to work both ends of the dial: which parts of a room to hush, and which to let shout. And because she and Kale spend their days sourcing stone and tile from around the world, the thing she reaches for to turn the volume back up isn't what you'd expect.

Subscribe to see the full tour — the rooms where she goes completely quiet, the ones where she turns it all the way up, and the marble that's doing some of the loudest work in the house.

Does Your House Need Hushing? Backwards Decluttering with Myquillyn Smith31 Aug 202600:25:41

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Myquillyn Smith is a lifelong home-lover, three-time guest, and the author of House Hushing — you might know her as The Cozy Minimalist. In this conversation, she walks me through backwards decluttering: her method for clearing a room down to almost nothing, living in it that way for a day or two, and only letting things back in once you've proven you actually miss them.

Somewhere in the middle of it, I found myself naming something that's been rattling around in my head for years. Myquillyn trusts the gut — how does the room feel — and I love that. But I also love having one very literal, stopwatch-able way to check the gut's math: if it takes you more than ten minutes to get a room back to feeling right, you have too much stuff in it. Not too much by anyone else's count. Too much for you. I'm calling it the Ten-Minute Threshold, and once you start using it, you can't stop measuring every room in your house by it.

We also get into her three categories of “soulful objects” — past, present, and future — worth keeping around, and why the goal was never to own less. It's to own only what earns its place.

The Whole Slow Style Framework in One Bungalow — with Amy Dutton24 Aug 202600:16:58

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

None of the designers I bring on this show share the same aesthetic, and they don't need to. What I'm looking for is the Slow Style philosophy in practice, whether or not they've ever heard the term.

I recently toured the home of designer Amy Dutton — a 1920s bungalow on the New Hampshire seacoast that she and her husband gutted and rebuilt while raising three kids. It turned out to be one of the clearest examples I've come across: without setting out to, she hit every one of the five design elements I talk about in my book, and all three of my design principles were quietly at work throughout.

Subscribe to see the full home tour on video — the antique that still adjusts itself with the seasons, the design rule she breaks on purpose in two different rooms, and the values decision hiding behind a square-footage choice.

How a Bag of Mussels Became a Wall Sconce — a Tour of Porta Romana with Ali Milam17 Aug 202600:08:04

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this guest episode, I sit down with Ali Milam, managing director of Porta Romana, the British lighting and furniture house, to swap some of the best origin stories I've heard in years. If you're the kind of person who loves a historical novel about an artist or architect — the drama around who really painted the portrait, who sat for it, who bought or stole it over the centuries — this episode is going to appeal to you the same way. Every piece Porta Romana makes has a story like that behind it.

Earlier this year, I got to live out a total design-geek dream and tour their workshops in the English countryside. This episode is me bringing you along.

Subscribe to hear the full conversation: the museum exhibit that sparked an entire lighting collection, a sculptor casting mussel shells one by one, and an artist collaboration that started with draped fabric and ended in cast metal.

Down the DIY Rabbit Hole: The case for handmade, whether you make it or buy it.10 Aug 202600:08:09

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this solo episode, I pull a chapter straight out of my book — Handmade — and this time I'm not just talking about it, I'm living it. What started as one paint color turned into curtains, a pleated lampshade, an antique cupboard found on Facebook Marketplace, and a chair I'm already planning to redo.

It's about something I don't think gets said enough: handmade isn't a shopping category, like “farmhouse” or “coastal.” It's a relationship — with a maker, with a place you found something, with your own two hands. And once you start seeing it that way, you can't really unsee it.

Subscribe to hear the whole cascade:the vintage French fabric that became a bedspread by accident, the lamp I hadn't actually seen in years, and why I think failed handmade projects matter more than the ones that turn out perfectly.

No One's Home is Generic in France with Danielle Postel-Vinay03 Aug 202600:41:07

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

While the podcast is on break, I’m digging into the archives and re-airing my favorites. In this one, I sit down with novelist and New York Times book columnist Danielle Postel-Vinay to talk about what a French home is actually for.

It's about home as a vessel for your vision of life — not the self-focused idea of a home that simply mirrors who you already are, but something more outward: a home that carries what you value and offers it, on purpose, to the people who walk through your door. Danielle spent years studying this firsthand, from her teenage mentorship in an antique dealer's shop to her own French in-laws' apartment in Paris.

We discuss how the entryway becomes an embrace, why the French salon is never once arranged around a television, and the story of the asparagus dinner that broke every rule and kept every ritual at the same time.

Setting Intentions Through Decor with Kim Gordon27 Jul 202600:42:17

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

My conversation with Los Angeles designer Kim Gordon is about setting an intention before you design anything at all. Kim asks a house what it wants to be before she draws a single floor plan, and she treats the senses — not the color palette — as the true starting point of a room.

What Makes a Painting “Good”? With Julia Collins20 Jul 202600:13:30

To hear the full episode and see the video, subscribe here.

In this guest episode, I sit down with Julia Collins, a London-based art advisor and dealer behind Collins & Green, to talk about how to actually look at a painting — no art history degree required.

Julia has a real academic art background, and by her own admission, it's “in many ways irrelevant” to how she looks at a painting. The pieces she loves best aren't always the most technically accomplished — they're the ones that catch her somewhere specific: a color balance, a blank face, a detail she can't quite explain. That's the whole method, and it's one anyone can use.

In this guest episode, I sit down with Chicago-area interior designer and author Maida Korte to talk about what happens when a “tight ship” personality runs headlong into a house that refuses to be controlled.

Maida’s new memoir, Gutted: How an Old House Remodeled Me, set out to be a book about renovating a hundred-year-old house in Woodstock, Illinois. What it became, she told me, was a book about giving up the need for things to be finished and correct on her own schedule — and what that release made possible in her marriage and with her four daughters.

Every Beautiful Room Started as a Complaint, with Debbie Mathews06 Jul 202600:09:40

To hear the full episode and see the video, subscribe here.

In this Think Like A Designer episode, I sit down with Debbie Mathews, a Nashville-based interior designer and antiques dealer, to look through a curated selection of the rooms she's designed — from a sunroom in Belle Meade to a ranch outside Franklin, Tennessee.

Every good client relationship starts the same way: the client names a problem and a few basics — a color they love, a piece they already own — and hands the rest over. What happens in that handoff is where a designer actually earns her keep, and it's usually invisible to everyone but her. This episode makes it visible.

Subscribe to see and hear the full portfolio review: the sunroom nobody used until Debbie figured out why, the custom-built solution to a very specific bedside problem, and the trick she uses to bring a two-story room down to human scale.

Keep Your Grandma’s Stuff: How To Use Heritage as a Design Element29 Jun 202600:29:28

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this solo episode, I'm going deep on one of the five physical elements of every Slow Style home — and arguably the most personal one: Heritage and Culture.

It's about heritage as authorship. Not just the objects you've inherited, but the idea that your personal history — however much of it you know, however complicated it is, however far back it goes — is a story you get to write, edit, and hand forward. Most people treat their heirlooms as decorating problems. I want to reframe them as creative resources.

In this episode, I show specific objects from my own home and the stories behind them, how to handle heritage when it's complicated, why the house itself has a history worth honoring, what to bring home from the world when you travel with intention, and the room in my house that proves you don't have to inherit heritage — you can make it.

The Final Design Decision You're Probably Skipping — with Liz Williams22 Jun 202600:08:09

To hear the full episode and see the video, subscribe here.

In this Think Like A Designer episode, I sit down with Liz Williams, an Atlanta-based interior designer known for symmetry, elegance, and an eye for detail, to look through a curated selection of her portfolio — from a grand formal home on the Chattahoochee River to a barn in Madison, Georgia, that is rustic on the outside and quietly refined within.

It's about the last decision most rooms never get: the finishing detail that takes a space from considered to complete. Not the focal point, not the statement piece — the trim on the pillow gusset, the tape on the curtain hem, the nail head on the wingback. The thing most of us talk ourselves out of before we ever try it.

Subscribe to see and hear the full portfolio review: how Liz mixes comfort with formality, why she reaches for trim where most designers reach for nothing, and the moment a set of plain white lampshades became something worth remembering.

Before You Call the Contractor: Danielle Nicholson on Renovating Without Regrets15 Jun 202600:07:50

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Want to avoid renovation regrets? I talk with interior designer Danielle Nicholson about the thing that causes more renovation heartbreak than bad tile choices or blown budgets: starting before you’re actually ready. Danielle’s book “Don’t Start Without Me” is built around a single idea: the real work of renovating happens before you even talk to a contractor.  Or even a designer. Before anyone shows up with a truck. Before the showroom. Before the finish selections. Very specific questions related to your vision have to be answered first — and most people skip them entirely. Subscribe to hear the full conversation: what Danielle wishes every client would bring to the table, the mistakes she sees made over and over, and why “I just want to get it done” are the words that make her cringe.

In this Designers at Home episode, I tour the home of Jill Litner Kaplan, a Boston-area interior designer whose approach to decorating stopped me in my tracks — not because it's flashy or maximalist, but because of a single idea I couldn't stop thinking about after I left.  It's about how color palates emerge from storytelling as opposed to the "pop of color" advice that's been watered down into a band-aid solution.

Still In Style: Flipping Through 20 Years of Design Magazines01 Jun 202600:04:51

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

What does a 2007 issue of Domino have in common with a room you'd design today? More than you'd think.

In this episode, I dig through a stack of old design magazines — Domino, Flea Market Style, House Beautiful, Veranda, and Country Living, spanning 2007 to 2019 — and ask the question I find myself returning to constantly: what still holds up?

We talk suzanis, suzanis (yes, still), the case for painting all four walls instead of just one, why the humble breakfast nook deserves a comeback, and what the best white kitchens actually have in common. I share my ongoing plinth hunt, make a confession about Country Living being my Bible in the late '90s, and make a gentle but firm plea for the death of the accent wall.

If you've got a pile of old tear sheets, a half-finished vignette, or a dining room that could use some bookshelves — this one's for you.

In this episode:

  • What Domino got right about sustainability back in 2007
  • Minimalism vs. maximalism — and why neither is ever really "out"
  • The case for the jewel box room (powder rooms, butler's pantries, and going all out in small spaces)
  • Layered window treatments, bed canopies, and other things that keep coming back around
  • Why I think the accent wall's days are numbered
  • Treating your kitchen and bathroom like actual rooms

The Episode I Almost Didn’t Make-Stay Till The End04 May 202600:29:15

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

This week's episode is a little different — and honestly, a little vulnerable for me. After ten years and more than 400 episodes of Slow Style Home, I'm pulling back the curtain on what it's really taken to create this podcast, and why I've decided to make a significant change. I've always believed that what we choose to surround ourselves with reflects what we truly value, and lately I've been turning that same lens on my own work. I've reached a point where I need to ask an honest question: Is what I'm creating something you value enough to support? So I'm shifting to a mostly paid model — not as a sales tactic, but as a way to align my work with what it's actually worth and to connect more deeply with the people who genuinely feel that pull toward creating a meaningful home. This isn't about pressure or persuasion. It's about making an intentional choice (the same kind I talk about all the time) and finally being willing to stand behind the value of what I've built.

I keep thinking about how often we walk into a gallery already convinced we don’t belong there and how quickly that belief starts to shape what we choose. In this week's episode, I sit down with gallery owner Liz Lidgett to talk about her new book “Art Is For Everyone”. Because collecting art isn’t about having the right words or the right budget, it’s about being willing to notice your own reactions and trust them. We talked about how your taste develops through exposure—by looking at a lot of art, by saying no without apology, and by getting curious about why something pulls you in. A good gallerist isn’t there to judge you; they’re there to help you translate those instincts into something tangible. And yes, we got into the practical side: price, scale, the mistake of buying small just because it feels safer, but what matters more is understanding that art isn’t meant to match your room, it’s meant to lead it. When you let yourself buy from that emotional place, you’re not just filling a wall, you’re creating a home that reflects you in a way nothing else really can.

Old Bones + Modern Soul: How Jo Berryman Honors History with Bold, Irreverent Choices 20 Apr 202600:29:26

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode of the Designers at Home series, I take you inside the home of designer Jo Berryman, a space that, to me, perfectly embodies what it means to honor both history and personal expression. As we move through her home together, I’m struck by how effortlessly she blends old and new, preserving original architectural details while layering in sculptural, modern elements and deeply personal touches. What I love most is how grounded her approach is in nature; nothing feels overly forced or decorated for decoration’s sake. Instead, there’s this beautiful sense of rhythm, of organic shapes, of materials aging and evolving over time. It’s a reminder that our homes don’t need to be perfect or finished—they just need to feel considered, alive, and reflective of who we are.

Stuck in the In-Between? How to Decorate Your Way Through13 Apr 202600:23:16

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Are you in the middle of a major life transition and feeling stuck between who you were and who you’re becoming? This episode is for you.

Whether you’re navigating a career change, an empty nest, a move, or just a season of life that feels uncertain, your home doesn’t have to sit on pause while you wait for things to settle. In fact, the in-between might be the perfect time to start.

In this episode we’re talking about why style evolves — and why that’s actually a good thing. You’ll hear the story of my own living room evolution (including a red couch, a blue chair, yellow walls, and what I can only describe as a kindergarten classroom) and the five hard-won design lessons that came out of it.

You’ll also learn:

  • Why you’re more creative than you think — and what creativity actually means when it comes to your home
  • How to let go of what you’ve outgrown without guilt
  • Why buying things to match is a trap, and what to do instead
  • How to think about trends so you don’t get burned
  • A simple, low-stakes exercise you can try this weekend to start training your eye

Your home can reflect who you’re becoming — even before you fully arrive. Let’s get into it.

The Beautiful, Incomplete Room with Shabby Chic’s Rachel Ashwell23 Mar 202600:35:49

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Rachel Ashwell, and what stayed with me most wasn’t just her iconic aesthetic; it was her mindset. We talked about her move back to the English countryside, her need for the rhythm of the seasons, and how she approaches her home as something always evolving, never finished. From embracing “leftovers” and layering pieces with history, to letting go of perfection and even her own hesitation around bold choices, she reminded me that a home isn’t about getting it right, it’s about letting it reflect who you are in the moment… and giving yourself permission to keep changing.

How Your “Comfortable” Home is Holding You Back with Vera Blouin16 Mar 202600:25:20

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Interior designer Vera Blouin joins me to talk about her book, “The Reincarnated Room.” Vera sees the home as something that holds the history of who we’ve been, and through design, we can let go of those old layers and create spaces that support who we’re becoming. We explore how materials, light, and texture shape our emotional experience of a room, and why staying “comfortable” can sometimes keep us stuck instead of helping us grow. It’s a thoughtful conversation about how our homes evolve alongside us, and how design can become a tool for stepping into the next chapter of our lives. After our conversation, I slipped in some bonus content, a listener Q&A on what I do in terms of decorating between the holidays.

A Mix of Texture Rather Than Color: How To Flow From Room To Room With Hill Rondero 09 Mar 202600:33:02

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode of the Designers at Home series, I had the pleasure of visiting the home of Charlotte-based interior designer Hill Rondero. I first met Hill when she moderated a design talk I gave at Slate Interiors, and I immediately knew I wanted to see her home.  It’s a great example of what a cohesive house can look like. Nothing in the space is trying to be the star; instead, everything works together. It was the conversation happening between everything: the vintage French pieces next to mid-century chrome, the tattered leathers beside rattan, the quiet discipline of a neutral palette layered with texture after texture. Hill proves that when you let materials, art, and collected objects do the talking, color almost becomes secondary. Her home feels calm but never boring, thoughtful but never precious—and along the way we talk about risk-taking in design, why texture palettes matter just as much as color palettes, and how the things you’re most afraid to try are often the very things that make a space unforgettable.

Why Your Decor Feels Off: You’re Shopping For A Style, Not A Life02 Mar 202600:17:46

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

I kicked off this episode right where so many of us get stuck: drowning in throw pillows, 50 open browser tabs, and a vague sense that something is just… off. I’ve seen it all—the accidental French country phase, the “eclectic with a touch of hoarding” situation, the guilt over meaningful heirlooms that don’t quite fit. And here’s the truth bomb: The problem isn’t your taste. It’s starting from a category instead of your own story. “Life informs style” means two things: your home should support how you actually live, and it should reflect your specific, one-of-a-kind life. Not a catalog’s version of you. When you begin with what you want to feel—calm, grounded, inspired—you make clearer decisions with a lot less overwhelm. Even in tight seasons with kids, budgets, or rentals, beauty isn’t a luxury; it’s a refuge. Start with your story, and the room follows.

Slow Style In The Wild: Christina Cruz Leans on Art, Nature and Antiques23 Feb 202600:31:31

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode of Think Like a Designer, I sit down with Christina Cruz to talk about what slow style really looks like in action. Her aesthetic may be more modern and pared back than mine, but it’s just as layered and soulful. We explore how she blends antiques with clean lines, incorporates meaningful travel finds, and uses natural materials to warm up contemporary spaces. From gallery walls built around collected art to a moody office-turned-bar and family-friendly kitchens that don’t sacrifice beauty, Christina proves that great design isn’t about trends—it’s about intention. Different look, same philosophy: create a home that tells your story.

Nature Knows Where Your Sofa Goes (Stop Overthinking It) with Abi Dare16 Feb 202600:35:46

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Sitting down with Abi Dare to talk about her new book, Bring the Outside In, felt like having someone quietly turn on a light in rooms I thought I already understood. We started with the idea of nature in our homes, but very quickly moved far beyond the usual advice about adding more plants or maximizing daylight. Abi shows us how the landscapes we love can become a roadmap for every decision we make — from color palettes pulled from forest canopies and sunsets, to the mix of textures that make a space feel layered and alive. We explored curving shapes, reclaimed materials, and why a sleek piece of glass or metal can still feel deeply connected to the natural world. And then we went even deeper.

We talked about prospect and refuge — that powerful instinct to feel protected while still being able to look out — and how it explains everything from our love of restaurant booths to the magic of a window seat. We discussed mystery and enticement, the importance of what you glimpse from one room to the next, and why transitions like hallways deserve far more attention than they usually get. My biggest takeaway? When you let nature lead, the pressure to “get it right” disappears. The choices start to feel intuitive. Personal. Grounded. Let nature do the heavy lifting.

Inside Sean Leffers’ Poetic Mix of Cultures, Eras, and Story 09 Feb 202600:35:39

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I have the absolute pleasure of stepping inside the Los Angeles home of designer Sean Leffers—someone whose work I admire for its depth, sensitivity, and extraordinary sense of narrative. From the moment we walk through the door, it’s clear that Sean doesn’t decorate; he curates a life. His rooms are layered with art, antiques, travel finds, spiritual references, and handmade pieces that carry memory and lineage.

As we tour, Sean shares the stories behind Japanese metalwork born from peacetime, Brazilian and Sri Lankan furniture, colonial Peruvian carving, block-printed textiles from India, and contemporary works by artists he loves and champions. We talk about how culture travels, how objects evolve across borders, and why the blurred line between art and craft makes a home feel human.

Most of all, this episode is about connection. Each vignette becomes an invitation—to ask questions, to linger, to see more.  If you want a home that feels personal, soulful, and deeply lived in, this conversation is full of inspiration.

The American Homeowner's Creativity Crisis (And How The Brits Avoid It) 02 Feb 202600:27:34

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I’m reflecting on the idea that it’s never too late to begin again—especially when it comes to our homes. After returning from a deeply inspiring trip to London, where I was immersed in British craftsmanship and design culture, I found myself thinking about how differently we approach decorating in the UK versus the US. The British emphasis on creativity, comfort, patina, and lived-in beauty feels closely aligned with my slow style philosophy, especially when contrasted with America’s fixation on trends, perfection, and convenience. I explore how our fear of imperfection and maintenance has quietly shaped our choices, often pulling us away from natural materials, meaningful objects, and the joy of caring for what we own. To bring these ideas into practice, I invite you to step away from algorithms and quick fixes and instead create a tangible, real-life vision board for your home—one rooted in personal experience, inspiration, and the kind of life you want to live there.

This episode is part two of my Best of 2025 series, and it’s all about show and tell—those moments when designers walk us through a room and explain why it works. I pulled clips from conversations where we slowed down and really looked at composition, color, pattern, texture, and the quiet decisions that hold a space together. These are rooms best seen as much as heard, which is why this episode pairs especially well with YouTube. From bold, expressive spaces to calm, disciplined palettes, each designer reveals how intention, repetition, and play shape the way a room feels. It’s a reminder that beautiful interiors aren’t accidental—they’re built thoughtfully, one choice at a time.

I’m bringing you along with me to Santa Fe for a quiet, layered look inside the home of designer Heather French—a place that feels deeply rooted in its landscape and gently expressive of the family who lives there. Walking through her territorial-style house, especially dressed for the holidays, felt like a reminder that good design isn’t about spectacle, but about intention: rooms shaped by how they’re truly used, materials that show age and wear with grace, and traditions that build warmth over time. From fruit-laden tables and needlepoint banquettes to a kitchen designed for lingering and a living room meant for both conversation and rest, Heather’s home is a beautiful example of how style can be personal, soulful, and quietly enduring

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

As we wrapped up the year, I found myself gathering the moments from the show that moved me the most—the conversations that nudged me to think differently about home, beauty, and the way we shape our days. Revisiting these clips felt a bit like walking back through rooms I love: Olga reminding us that tiny shifts in our spaces can spark self-worth; Danielle celebrating the joyful friction of mixing styles; Bailey inviting us into that fearless creative “zone.” Then there were the makers—Francesca stirring pigments into velvety limewash, Brea and Guy rescuing centuries-old stone, and Michal weaving stories through embroidery—each one revealing the human hands and histories behind the things we live with. Sharing these voices again felt like opening a window to everything I believe about Slow Style: that beauty is both mirror and guide, and that home is an ever-evolving conversation between who we are and who we’re becoming.

It’s Not a Makeover, It’s a Tune-up: A Coaching Call Where Small Changes Make a Big Impact01 Dec 202500:30:42

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

This week’s episode is a sweet, simple reminder of how small changes can make a home feel more like you. Laurie and I began in her kitchen, at the long window seat that greets you the moment you enter from the back door. Even with its beautiful view, it felt unfinished to her—like it wasn’t yet saying, We live here. As we talked, I encouraged her to trust the instincts she already had: using her own textiles, adding a little color, choosing organic patterns, and even hanging plants to bring some life into the space. We moved through the nearby rooms too, touching on lighting challenges and the beginnings of a gallery wall. In the end, every question circled back to the same truth: her home just needed more of her, and she already knew exactly how to make that happen.

In this episode of the Slow Style Home Podcast, I speak with Michal Silver, Creative Director at Christopher Farr Cloth, whose work is guided by curiosity, collaboration, and a deep respect for history. Michal shares how their textiles and wallpapers grow slowly from long conversations with artists, archives, and craftspeople around the world—allowing time for ideas to unfold rather than following fast-paced production cycles. She reflects on the joy of being pushed out of her comfort zone, the role of the hand in design, and the importance of creating interiors that feel personal and lived-in rather than perfect. Ultimately, this conversation is about embracing the slow evolution of home and creativity—letting spaces grow with us, layer by layer.

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this final episode of the season, I get to sit down with the one and only Vern Yip—yes, that Vern Yip! You probably know him from his trailblazing days on design television, but today he joins me to talk about his beautiful new book, Color, Pattern, Texture. We dive into everything from the deeply personal story of a scroll his mother carried while fleeing communist China, to how he uses those kinds of meaningful objects as the foundation for timeless design. Vern shares why starting with what matters most to you—not trends—creates homes that are layered, enduring, and uniquely yours. We look closely at some of the spaces from his book, break down why they work, and talk about the emotional side of design: how a room can tell your story, reflect who you are, and even help you step into who you want to become.

From Moroccan Souks to Your Living Room: The Art of Global Mixing with Stephanie Rudloe29 Sep 202500:34:32

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I talk with designer and shop owner Stephanie Rudloe about her work with Marrakesh Designs and her long collaboration with Moroccan artisans. Stephanie shares how she first fell in love with Moroccan craft, from rugs and doors to brass lighting and pottery, and how these handmade pieces bring depth and character into our homes. We also explore how to layer just a touch of Morocco into everyday interiors in a way that feels natural and personal without going overboard or being overly thematic. What we find is that certain Moroccan objects and motifs have been design staples for many decades in America.

Natural vs. Man Made: Why your Floors, Countertops and Walls Want Real Stone with Breda & Guy Kellner 15 Sep 202500:23:52

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I sit down with Breda and Guy Kellner of Paris Ceramics to talk about their extraordinary work with natural and reclaimed stone. I’ve long admired how they honor the history and geology of each material, transforming salvaged slabs into flooring, fireplaces, and surfaces that feel both timeless and deeply alive. We talk about what it means to live with materials that change and age, why patina is worth celebrating, and how true craftsmanship connects us to the past while shaping spaces for the future. This is a conversation about beauty, imperfection, and choosing to design with time—not trends.

The Art-First Approach: Color, Pattern, and Personality in Interior Design with Natalie Papier08 Sep 202500:34:03

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I talk with Natalie Papier about her new book, “Start With the Art”. Natalie explains why the art you choose—whether it’s from a flea market, your kids, or a gallery—can and should be the starting point for designing a room. We discuss how art can shape color palettes, patterns, and materials, and why it tells the real story of a home. Natalie also shares examples from her own spaces, offers advice on experimenting with paint and scale, and emphasizes the importance of adding humor (think a six-foot fiberglass ostrich) and personality to your interiors.

Updating Your Kitchen The Slow Style Way, Featuring Barbara Ballinger and Margaret Crane01 Sep 202500:39:53

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

Looking back, my kitchen has gone through many lives. It started with painted cabinets and bamboo floors on a tight budget, then evolved through a moody green phase during COVID before finally landing on a navy-and-white look inspired by the sea. Along the way, we tiled to the ceiling, swapped in a gorgeous Bertazzoni stove, shiplapped the ceiling, and added furniture pieces to make it feel warm and lived-in rather than purely functional. Each change taught me something about color, materials, and the value of taking time to figure out what really works.

With my renovation journey behind me, I sit down with Barbara Ballinger and Margaret Crane, authors of Kitchen Conversations, to talk about what really goes into creating a kitchen that works for you. We cover the basics like layout, storage, and lighting, and why planning for how you actually use the space matters more than following trends. Barbara and Margaret share practical tips on where to save, when to splurge, and how to avoid common renovation mistakes. We also discuss making design choices that last, adding personality to your kitchen, and how to approach the entire process without rushing it.

Listener Spotlight: Global Style with Maria Resto25 Aug 202500:24:26

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

In this episode, I talked with Maria Resto, a longtime listener whose Chicago home reflects her love of travel, vintage finds, and evolving style. She shared how over 25 years she’s layered antiques, global pieces, bold textiles, and personal items—like a burgundy sofa and a juju hat—learning through trial and error to create rooms full of character. Maria also plans to highlight more of her Puerto Rican heritage, blending family history with her eclectic style. What excites her most is that a home can keep changing, staying personal and never truly “finished.”

Creating Soulful, Whole-Home Color Palettes with Francesca Wezel18 Aug 202500:37:41

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

This episode with Francesca Wezel is for all you design enthusiasts. Francesca is a colorist who creates stunning, one-of-a-kind colors. She shares the inspiration behind her colorful palettes, including her Himalayas palette, which was inspired by a trip to India. We also talk about her Houghton Hall and Poison into Medicine collections, which both have incredible backstories. We discuss the health benefits of using lime wash, which is the oldest form of paint known to man. Francesca explains that she never uses the words "right" or "wrong" when it comes to paint colors and that a paint color should be unique to who you are. A home should reflect your life experiences, your dreams, and what makes you feel happy.

Splurge vs. Save: The Pick 2 Principle28 Jul 202500:26:01

Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!

This week, I’m answering a listener question from Meg about how to balance style with function, especially when it comes to storage. She wants a home that looks good but also works for real life. I walk through different strategies depending on where you are in the process: whether you're starting from scratch, filling in gaps, or trying to upgrade over time. I also share my thoughts on when it makes sense to go with something quick and affordable like IKEA, and when to hold out for something more lasting.

We discuss using placeholders, being honest about your priorities (speed, price, or quality—you can only choose two), and how to avoid clutter by utilizing storage solutions that also add character. I show a few examples from my own home, including how I use vintage crates, tins, and even sugar bowls to keep things both tidy and personal.

This is the last episode of the season. We'll be back on August 18th. Also, early bird pricing for the retreat ends August 1st, so if you’re thinking about joining me this fall, now’s the time. All the details can be found here.
