In this episode, we’re exploring the difference between being helpful and falling into the trap of people pleasing. For some, the need to please others stems from a fear of failure or a desire to avoid guilt—feelings that can take a toll on your mental health and self-worth.

Here’s what we cover:

  • What is People Pleasing? Understanding its roots and how it can impact your life.
  • The Difference Between Helping and Pleasing: Why offering help doesn’t have to mean compromising yourself.
  • How to Overcome People Pleasing: Practical steps to break free from this habit.

Épisode 163

BUY THE SLOW LIVING BOOK HERE!

Are you a perfectionist? In today’s episode, we’re taking a deep dive into what perfectionism really means, especially for those who feel they’re constantly struggling to keep up with their dreams or feel a fear of failure. This is a common theme among my coaching clients, and it’s often connected to deeper issues, like childhood trauma.

Here’s what we discuss:

  • The Perfectionism Cycle: Understanding how perfectionism can start in childhood and persist into adulthood, often affecting your “inner child.”
  • The Challenge of Being in the Moment: Why perfectionists often struggle to stay present and how this affects everyday life.
  • Recognizing Perfectionist Patterns: Learning to identify signs of perfectionism as the first step toward breaking free.
  • Embracing Your Authentic Self: Steps you can take to overcome perfectionism and work toward a more genuine, slow living life.

If you’re ready to let go of the need for perfection and embrace a more balanced life, this episode is for you. Listen in to start breaking the perfectionism cycle and become more comfortable in your own skin.

Shifting Goal Posts

BUY THE SLOW LIVING BOOK HERE!

We all have them - Goals! However, sometimes people can get caught up in a hustle culture trying to achieve their goals. Which in the end, leads to unhappiness.

Today we are talking about:

  • What happens once you achieve your goals?
  • What is arrival fallacy?
  • What is wrong with S.M.A.R.T. goals?

One of the most important things that I want you to take away from today's episode is, don't tie your self worth to your goals. Happiness and self worthiness are not on the other side of goal achievement, so stop the hustle culture and achieve goals in a healthy manner.

Now is the absolute perfect time to pop the ear buds in and binge-listen to the Slow Living podcast.

Dust while you listen.

or mop

or vacuum

or clean out the linen closet

or go walk laps in your neighborhood.

You’ll feel better about yourself if you stay productive while listening and there are now 64 episodes, which is about 32 hours worth of listening.

If you aren’t a fan of New Year’s Resolutions because you think they don’t “work” — then I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I am a HUGE proponent of making & keeping my resolutions and am living out the life of my dreams because I’ve taken the time to craft and create and tweak and modify them throughout the last 20-odd years of my adult life.

 You can do this too.

It’s time. If you’ve been waiting for a nudge from the Universe —

 this is it.

 You have GOT THIS.

You really really do. Nothing is too far-fetched for the person who refuses to listen to reason.

Overview

I love helping listeners embark upon their own journey to Slow Down, and live the life they’ve always dreamt about: one filled with peace, purpose, and abundance.

I understand how you’re feeling when you are rushing around trying to do “all the things,” always playing catch up and finding time to get things done.

I know because I’m a mom too.

It’s okay to stop and breathe. My philosophy isn’t about cramming more and more into an already over-packed schedule, instead I offer realistic tips and plans to get things done quickly and efficiently so you can do things you want to do.

Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'Dea Episode 63 - How to Get What You Want when You Want it

We have an encore episode queued up for you today.

I originally entitled it “How to get What You Want, When you Want it”

and today, I want you to listen with fresh ears — and think of Getting What You Want out of life as if you are placing an online order.

 Place your order.

DREAM.

DREAM BIG.

and then go about your life, doing the things you need to do, and trust that your order is on the way.

Slow Down. Unplug. Go within and decide on purpose what is important and what isn’t and what you (and only you) can do right now to change this doom and gloom trajectory for yourself.

Use the daily journaling worksheets. Listen to uplifting things. Decide that you are in charge and that you can do helpful things each and every day to better yourself and your life.

 And then just trust —

 your order is in transit.

I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea

Today’s episode is an encore episode — right around Thanksgiving I made a conscious decision that I was going to unplug as best I can and bunker down with my family for the holiday season.

and that happened even BEFORE the Universe decided it was time for me to have covid!!!

 Take a listen.

I’ve been coaching “for reals” since the fall of 2019. Some of my coaching clients have made ENORMOUS strides forward in all aspects of their life, just by journaling it all out and making a plan, and sticking with it.

I know, you are looking for something MAGICAL and MIND-BLOWING.

The biggest, shiniest, most bestest thing ever —

so me showing up in your inbox, and suggesting that taking the time to download journaling worksheets doesn’t seem all that revolutionary.

 Hear me out.

Take a listen to the podcast episode, and do the work.

If you aren’t where you want to be, you’ve really got nothing to lose.

Like always, I think you are wonderful and amazing and I’m proud of you.

I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea

Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'Dea Episode 61 - Slowing Down for the Holidays

see all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes

This is a difficult time of the year to ‘get it all done’ —

even for the most grounded and centered and zen-ish person out there.

Sometimes the pressure to make everything memorable and perfect and create a photo-finish is enough to make us crack.

or enough to cause our back to go out.

Here I am, not able to move, a week after Thanksgiving.

I knew better, but I did way too much for way too many and neglected my own wants and wishes.

I know that if I stick to my sleep schedule, get up and meditate and journal before everyone else gets up, I feel calm, centered, and “in control.”

BUT. this past week at work was wonky — I had many teachers out sick (I’m a school secretary) so I was scrambling to find subs, we had our own crazy schedule at home with soccer and shuttling kids back to college and then back home again because of the UC strike —

 and I went too fast.

I KNEW I was going too fast.

and then, all of a sudden, my back went out.

SO, take a listen, and do better than I did. 😉

4 More Years

Épisode 60

Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'Dea Episode 60 - 4 More Years

see all podcast notes at stephanieodea.com/podcastnotes

4 More Years.

I recorded this a week or so ago — and the theme is about paying attention to where you are right now — and if what you are doing will be “good enough” to do for the Next 4 Years.

are you on the right path?

is what you are doing sustainable for another 4 years?

 are you happy?

 do you feel satisfied?

I recorded this with the mindset that I am 4 years away from turning 50 — so I started asking myself these questions —

can I do what I’m doing now, and not feel burnt out, not feel taken for granted, not feel overworked and under-appreciated for another 4 Years?

 is that a possibility?

 What about for YOU?

if you keep going the way you’re going with your heath, your finances, your relationships —

will it look okay and BE OKAY in another 4 years?

 If not, why not?

what needs to change?

take a listen and LMK your thoughts — only you know what rings true for you and in your own life.

Go slow. Take the time to really ponder these questions as you move through your day/week/end of the month.

I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea

on Instagram or Facebook or record a voicemail question.

This is a great listen — I’ve now listened to it twice, and each time I got a different juicy nugget. Beth, a former coaching client of mine, called in and said that she recently discovered that she was Codependent and wanted to know my thoughts.

 And honestly?

Her declaration of being codependent threw me for a loop.

 a literal loop.

because I do not think of her this way.

So take a listen — and see what rings true for YOU.

sometimes we hear labels or diagnoses and hear OURSELVES — but not everything can be labeled or placed into a container.

and that’s what is fun about being human.

 and living.

 NOW.

who you were a few months ago does not define you.

your past job, your past relationship, your parents, your schooling, the books you’ve read —

NONE of that defines who you are right this very second.

Only you get to decide what thoughts to think and what they mean about you.

And me? the thoughts I think about you are filled with joy and love and compassion and wonderment.

I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea

Today’s email and episode is about exploring the effect alcohol has in your life —

is there a place for it?

is it taking up too much room?

In episode #24 we discussed labels — and how I’m not a fan of them. Deciding on purpose to really pay attention to how much alcohol (or food or social media) you are consuming does not mean you are an alcoholic. (Or that you have an eating disorder or are addicted to social media.)

I’d like you instead to take off the label and keep an open mind and just EXPLORE.

 Be Curious.

If something is not actively HELPING you move forward in your life and help you achieve your dream life, explore why you are continuing with it.

Step 1 in living a Slow Life is to Declutter all that is not working.

In this episode I also talk about the difference between Start Goals and Stop Goals and how to make them a daily habit.

I hope you enjoy this episode — and AS ALWAYS — if you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email or tag me @stephanieodea
