Ukraine is competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It is the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-Soviet era and the first since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Is Kursk Putin's avenging nemesis? ---------- Kursk - a gamble for victory “A surprise attack, conceived with cunning, prepared with duplicity and executed with ruthlessness, provides international history with its most melodramatic moments.” So explains Sir Lawrence Freedman in his superlative books ‘Command’ and ‘Strategy’. And Ukraine has demonstrated its command of surprise and the potential battlefield impact through its lightning advance through Russia’s Kursk oblast. The power of shock in warfare is to overwhelm an adversary when they are at their weakest or when they least expect it. The irony here, is that Russian hubris, and its culture of systemic lying throughout the military and political hierarchy mean they are less likely to imagine the unexpected and prepare for it. Add to this the fact Russia does not see Ukraine as sovereign, and constantly denies its agency, which means they underestimate the Ukrainian capacity for innovation and surprise time and again, to their detriment. This time assumptive and arrogant thinking may lead to total defeat. ‘Between countries at war, there is no border, there is only the front,’ states the Ukrainian military researcher Mykola Bielieskov. Russians have forgotten that, but the Ukrainians did not. The incursions into Kursk and now Belgorod, have achieved stunning initial success and are looking more and more like a full offensive. Is Kursk Putin's avenging nemesis? ---------- Is it accurate to say Ukraine has ‘invaded’ Russia? Imposing that language on the situation may be premature and depend very much on what happens next. In the unlikely event that Ukrainian troops charge up to Moscow, Prigozhin style, then the phrase may be apt. But if the present action turns into a smart manoeuvre to ‘go around’ Russian fortifications on the Eastern and southern fronts, then it could be seen as simply an extension of the active front that winds its way across many hundreds of kilometres of Ukrainian territory, of which around a thousand kilometres is experiencing active combat at any given time. We seem immune to the shock of seeing a vast conventional war unfold on Ukraine’s territory, as if that were somehow normal and natural. But shocked that the same should be meted out to the aggressor army on Russian territory. In traditional warfare, that makes no sense, as whether formally declared or not, Russia has mounted an act of aggression against Ukraine, on a scale not seen since WWII. In other words, a war for territorial acquisition and regime change, which also has the characteristics of a genocidal campaign. The UN charter is clear and explicit that Ukraine has the right of self-defence as the victim of this aggression, and whose sovereign territories have been violated. Ukraine is competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It is the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-Soviet era and the first since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They have more of everything: tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, soldiers. Their original 100,000-strong invasion force has grown to 520,000, he said, with a goal by the end of 2024 of 690,000 men. The figures for Ukraine have not been made public. There is a ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 in their favour,” he said. Since 2022 the number of Russian tanks has “doubled” – from 1,700 to 3,500. A letter was published in the Financial Times: Calling for an immediate ‘peace’. But this clamour for a cessation of hostilities and a ‘peace at any price’ deal shows blind­ness to Russian goals, argue the signatories of a counter letter in the same publication. The Putin regime has exploited the vulnerabilities of global social media platforms, using bots and trolls to promote its narratives. David Satter is a journalist and historian with unique insights into how the deformation and repression of the past, is having terrible consequences for present day Russia. David has written extensively about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War in December 2013. This was perhaps not a surprising move, given that his books have covered topics such as the FSB’s role in the apartment bombings that brought Putin to power. From 1976 to 1982 David was the Moscow correspondent of the Financial Times, and then became a special correspondent on Soviet affairs for The Wall Street Journal. Cormac Smith has worked in Public Relations and Corporate Communications for over three decades. Before moving into the government sector in 2000 I spent most of the 1990’s managing media relations in the pharmaceutical industry. He has held several senior communication management positions in local government, and Whitehall departments, but in 2016 travelled to Ukraine to take up a special appointment as the ‘Strategic Communication Advisor’ to Pavlo Klimkin, then the Foreign Minister of Ukraine. He was attached to the British Embassy in Kyiv but was embedded in Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first foreigner to hold such a position. While in Kyiv, he also advised and provided training for five other government ministries and worked directly with three other cabinet ministers: Health, Education and the Deputy Prime Minister. As he says on his Twitter profile, he is channelling the spirit of George Orwell, and his dispatches from the frontlines of the war in Ukraine have been highly engaging, informative, eloquent, and full of humanity. Welcome to the pre-election debate. The election outcome may seem to be broadly predictable, but what will Day one for the new UK government look like? How prominent will Ukraine be in the priority list of a new cabinet? Will there be a continuation of foreign policy, and will it be aligned behind a Ukrainian victory – not simply the vaguely worded and non-committal phrase “as long as it takes”. The devil will be on the detail, ranging from issue such as rearming Britain for a dangerous world to our commitment to international law and cracking down on the laundering of oligarch money and finding our place in a fracturing global economy. But tonight, we will be discussing whether the war in Ukraine, which was initiated by Russia, should be at the top of the list. The longer it drags on, the higher the cost for Ukraine in human and economic terms, and the more malign and toxic Russia seem to be becoming. Despite Escalation management, prolonging the war seems to be compounding risks of a wider conflagration, rather than mitigating risk.
