We spoke with Andie MacDowell, Sadie Laflamme-Snow, Chyler Leigh, and Evan Williams about their character journeys this season from the romantic relationships, time travel, and family secrets, to breakups -- this season is full of all the drama we have come to know and love around this family. We also discuss the hope of a renewal.

In the first season, the multigenerational family drama introduced viewers to Kat Landry (Leigh), her teen daughter Alice (Laflamme-Snow), and Kat’s mother Del (MacDowell), three generations of women who are strong, willful, and independent. After being estranged for nearly two decades following the unsolved disappearance of Kat’s eight-year-old brother Jacob (Remy Smith) and the untimely death of family patriarch Colton Landry (Jefferson Brown) that prompted Kat to move away from her Canadian farm town of Port Haven, Kat moves back with Alice when she finds herself at a crossroads in life. Shortly after arriving, Alice unwittingly discovers the ability to travel between the past and present via a pond on the family’s land. Soon, Kat and Alice become determined to unearth the truth about these past tragedies and attempt to change the course of events. Elliot (Williams), Kat’s childhood friend who always held a torch for her, is there in the present to help guide both of them in their journey, as well as in the past for Alice as his teen self (David Webster). Season two starts where the shocking season one finale left off and had viewers on the edge of their seats – with Kat exclaiming to Del that she knows what happened to Jacob. As Kat continues her quest to find Jacob and bring him home, she and Alice uncover unexpected revelations about their origins that bring answers to some questions while new ones are raised.

Jackie Byers and Christian Navarro are stepping out of their comfort zone in their latest horror movie, Prey for The Devil, which already has horror fans talking. Byers (Sister Ann) has to deal with archaic values from the church as she faces her demons, while Navarro (Father Dante) helps guide her along but soon finds himself in trouble. Byers said she had so much fun filming the movie and working with the special effects, adding that while it adds an element for an actor to stretch their skill set, it is also incredibly hard and awkward. Meanwhile, Navarro said that he enjoyed everything about Father Dante, including his good nature, always putting others before himself. Navarro also paid homage to 13 Reasons Why saying that, that show taught him so much about acting, and this movie further is something he is also really proud of.

Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl, who Sister Ann believes is possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago. We spoke with Lily Santiago (“Veronica”), Michelle Vergara Moore (“Ella”), Josh McKenzie (“Lucas”), and Rohan Mirchandaney (“Scott”) about what fans can expect from La Brea this season. Last season, the characters found themselves split up in different time periods as one group tried to stay alive while the other went on a rescue mission to save them. However, this season, a major twist will alter the rest of the season and continue to spark connections between the past and present. Lily and Michelle were so excited to discuss how their characters have evolved since season one and give an update on where they are now and what is set to come after the mid-season break. Meanwhile, Josh and Rohan, who plays two characters that couldn't be more different, seem to find common ground in season two and becomes friends, which is a bromance we are all enjoying. Steve Spingola celebrates the 100th episode of Cold Justice by praising Kelly Siegler, discussing cold cases, and work outside of the show08 Oct 202200:22:00

Steve Spingola (best known for his work on the Jeffrey Dahmer case) has another reason to celebrate -- Cold Justice, a show he guest stars on regularly in hopes of solving cold cases, is celebrating its 100th episode in a special two-parter. Spingola has appeared on the show for years as he works with former Texas prosecutor Kelly Siegler on cold cases (that can sometimes be 30+ years old). Spingola is a wealth of knowledge, from the importance of the increase in technology to the smallest detail that can help piece together a solid circumstantial case. When speaking to him (as a true crime nerd), I couldn't help but get lost in many questions about the process, what they do while filming, and what happens when the cameras stop rolling. Spingola spent much of his afternoon speaking to me about the judicial process and what happens when he begins directing a case.

Kevin Can F**K Himself star, Eric Petersen talks Kevin's psyche, the show's conclusion, and if we will finally meet the real Kevin29 Sep 202200:21:02

Eric Petersen, star of the dark comedy Kevin Can F**K Himself, came on to discuss how he has been able to make Kevin a character we all love to hate and hate to love. Peterson said it was a balance for him, ensuring that he always kept Kevin in the over-the-top world of the multi-camera sitcom (where he makes horrible comments) -- yet keeping it satirical and funny. Petersen said that while he would never make these comments in real life, it was important for the audience to feel somewhat connected to his character. He also spoke about what it was like seeing other characters evolve over the two seasons while working to keep Kevin relatively status quo. Petersen does a great job explaining Kevin's psyche and acknowledges the nuances and cracks that begin to show as the series ends. So, of course, we had to ask him... will we ever see Kevin in the real world? You will have to listen to find out.

Last The Night director Nick Leisure and actor Brian Austin Green talk hit thriller, filming during COVID, and the human condition15 Sep 202200:43:25

Nick Leisure (director) and Brian Austin Green (Mr. Dunbar) talk about the hit thriller Last The Night. Both spoke to us exclusively about what it was like making the movie during COVID and why incorporating that into the storyline was pivotal. Leisure said that teachers are mentors and people we look up to, but they are also humans -- he wanted to explore what would happen if a teacher hit his breaking point during the pandemic and went to the next level. (Hitting our breaking points during the pandemic is something we probably all could relate to.) Meanwhile, Green talks about the massive shift in roles for him, adding that this was a departure from the typical "good guy" he has played in the past, and the part allowed him to explore his tools as an actor. (Green is phenomenal in this role). The duo worked seamlessly in this film, showcasing a true edge-of-your-seat thriller. Leisure and Green want everyone to relate to the film but also have fun enjoying the chaos that ensues.

Emma Appleton, Marli Siu, and Aliyah Odoffin from Everything I Know About Love, talk romance, London, and friendships14 Sep 202200:12:02

Everything I Know About Love stars Emma Appleton, Marli Siu, and Aliyah Odoffin were excited to talk about their new streaming show. All three found personal ways of connecting with their characters and are proud to put forward a show with four women who all support each other and strive to make steps in their lives. Even though the characters are messy and don't have everything figured out, the show is so much fun to watch. I compared it to a younger British Sex and the City. It's charming, funny, relatable and full of men and good times. They all agree it's okay to be in your twenties and not have everything perfect. Even now, in life, no matter the age, we are all just trying to figure things out.

Host: Monica Gleberman

Editor: Polina Jdanova

Synopsis:

The central love story of Everything I Know About Love is between childhood best friends Maggie and Birdy. But it is also a raucous girl gang show, set in a 2012 London house-share inhabited by four girls - Maggie, Birdy and their mates from university, Amara and Nell. The series is an unflinching deep dive into bad dates, heartaches and humiliations and begs the question: can platonic love survive romantic love as we grow up?

Edward Ashton author of Mickey7 talks Niflheim, expendables, and creepers in book, and Robert Pattinson in movie adaptation14 Sep 202200:41:48

Edward Ashton, the author of Mickey7, walked into a rabbit hole of questions from us as we dissected the book. Ashton discusses how he came up with the idea, the scientific details behind many underlying layers in the novel, and why being "expendable" is necessary as it preserves more valuable people on the planet yet comes with great sacrifice. In addition to going into details about the new planet, Niflheim, the colonization process, and creepers -- Ashton spends the time going over the intricacies that made it a must-read (can not put it down) book. Additionally, we discuss Ashton's call when he found out that his adaptation was going into pre-production, the cast announcements, including Robert Pattinson playing Mickey7, and the one thing he spoke to Bong Joon-ho (director of the adaptation/film) that had to remain in the movie.

One drunken night in a New York bar, surrounded by the friends and family members of American soldiers killed in action, Marine Corps veteran and merchant seaman John “Chickie” Donohue (Efron) is posed a magnificently preposterous challenge: what if he were to sneak into Vietnam, locate all his friends in combat, and provide them with messages of love and encouragement — and a whole bunch of brewskis? Chickie hatches a half-baked plan and is on his way. He doesn’t anticipate a crash course in the intricacies of war, truth, and honour, courtesy of Coates (Crowe), a Look photographer with first-hand experience of this ongoing disaster that the American public is only gradually becoming aware of.

Director Tearepa Kahi and actor Jay Ryan talk new film Muru, it's TIFF premiere, and the importance of history and culture13 Sep 202200:04:44

We were at the TIFF premiere of Muru with actor Jay Ryan and director Tearepa Kahi to discuss why this movie was such a passion project for both Kahi and Ryan. Inspired by actual events, Muru is the story of a local Police Sergeant ‘Taffy’ Tāwharau (Cliff Curtis), who must choose between duty to his badge or his people when the Government invokes anti-terrorism powers to launch an armed raid on Taffy’s remote Urewera community, on a school day. Ryan said he was looking for a movie with gravity and weight while keeping true to New Zealand yet having something substantial to say. Ryan's character struggles in the film between his duties and his humanity which is quite interesting to watch. Meanwhile, Kahi said there was so much behind making this film, including portraying its truth while never shying away from something that might be hard to watch. He said this film had to be made to bring light to a situation some may have forgotten while reminding us that it's okay to forgive but never to forget; otherwise, we are doomed to repeat it.

Host: Monica Gleberman

Editor: Corinna Caimi

--

Synopsis:

Inspired by actual events, MURU is the powerful story of a local Police Sergeant ‘Taffy’ Tāwharau, who recently returned home to the remote Ruatoki valley to look after his sick father.

Taffy’s father’s close associate, Tame Iti runs a series of boot camps in the valley called ‘Rama’ (fire light). These camps are centered around survival skills and keeping their shared Tūhoe identity alive. Despite many invitations, Taffy has never attended Camp Rama. Unknown to everyone in the valley, Rama has been under police surveillance for six months. When a troubled youth (Rusty) fires a loaded rifle, surveillance footage triggers a response led by Captain Gallagher and an elite STG unit. With pressure mounting to intervene, Gallagher starts to doubt the veracity of Tame Iti as a potential domestic terrorist. Tensions heighten when Rusty is caught in a domestic disturbance, and rather than locking him up; Taffy takes Rusty to Camp Rama to deal with the situation. While Rusty joins the Rama circle and learns about his Tūhoe identity, Taffy sees a dark shape beyond the campfire and gives chase. Taffy pursues the runner through the bush and discovers a surveillance van. Gallagher steps out and confronts Taffy, 'Are you with us, or are you with Tame?' Taffy senses the danger to his community and chooses to help Gallagher facilitate a safe round-up of Tame and other targets. Still, the Government betrays this agreement when Gallagher launches the Police Raid on a school day. During the raid, something goes wrong, leading Taffy to make a bigger choice, 'serve or protect'.

This gripping action drama is not a re-creation but a response to the 2007 Tūhoe raids. MURU is a Māori concept for 'forgiveness’.

Sidney cast and family talk TIFF premiere, legacy, the civil rights movement, and love10 Sep 202200:03:51

Sidney had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where cast and talent came out to show their support for the Poitier family. Red carpet appearances included: Oprah Winfrey, Sherri Poitier, Pamela Poitier, Anika Poitier, Sydney Poitier, Sherri Poitier, Beverly Poitier- Henderson, and Reginald Hudlin. All came together with one thing on their minds, love. Oprah said when discussing content for the film, everyone came together. Oprah said they never spoke about being "trailblazers" but about the cosmos, life, struggle,s and more. Meanwhile, Sherri Poitier said she surprised her family and came together in the spirit of love that her dad would have wanted. She said he was about love, giving it to the world, and the world giving it back to him. Listen to hear the rest of the family and attendees talk about the importance of this film while honoring Sidney Poitier.

Host: Monica Gleberman

Editor: Marianna Randazzo

Social Media Graphic: Jojo

 --

 Synopsis:

Sidney Poitier was one of the most gifted and charismatic actors the cinema has known. This sweeping documentary crafts a richly detailed portrait, surveying Poitier’s films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America.

Poitier’s own words provide the narration, telling the story of a boy born to tomato farmers in the Bahamas. Moving to the US at age 15, he quickly learned the brutal realities of the Jim Crow era but also found his passion for acting. Director Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall) weaves together a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, and Oprah Winfrey (also producer of the film). Poitier’s contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America’s hopes for racial justice.

Poitier’s rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. alongside his lifelong friend Harry Belafonte, and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen. By the mid-1960s Poitier was everywhere. In 1967 alone he made Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner; To Sir, With Love; and In the Heat of the Night.

Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today’s icons, it’s clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier. This film serves as a beautiful, powerful testament.

J.J. Perry stepped up to the plate to direct his first feature film, Day Shift, for Netflix. Perry said he was excited about the challenge and worked hard to make sure that there was a good balance between comedy and action. While Perry gives a lot of credit to the actors that came on board to film the movie, it's clear that Perry found his comfort spot in the director's chair -- as he talks about some behind-the-scenes stories, how he filmed that car scene, and even why the vampires look a little different.

Perry started his martial arts training in 1975 and began with stunt work in the late 1980s when he got out of the army. He has had over 24 years of martial arts training and has a 5th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a 2nd-degree in Hapkido, and experience with all kinds of weapons. He got his black belt for Tae Kwon Do at the age of 12 and competed from the age of 7 to 24. Besides martial arts, J.J. is also skilled in riding bikes and rodeo and does weight lifting. Perry has also spent years in the industry working as a second director in addition to his stunt work.
