Magnolia Dreams and Possum Fights03 Jul 202600:52:06

This week, Cynthia and Heather cover everything from Grandma Camp and grown-up field trips to possums, baptisms, and unexpected social media greatness. Oh, and Joanna Gaines reposted Cynthia’s story. We are not okay.

They discuss the behind-the-scenes chaos of organizing Cynthia’s first-ever Grown-Up Field Trip to Magnolia in Waco, Texas, including giant passenger vans, and some fabulous travel bags for the participants. Heather recounts a backyard showdown involving a possum and her dog, while the two discuss why women need more excuses to gather, laugh, and have fun together.

They also celebrate a big milestone for JB, swap stories about aging parents, wedding showers, and family adventures, and debate whether Prime Days are actually going to bankrupt them.

If your summer feels a little chaotic, take a break and come laugh with us.

Turf Toe, Texas A&M, and Total Chaos with Ellen Skrmetti19 Jun 202600:59:06

What do hot rollers, menopause, a shattered office window, Texas A&M orientation, and four highly questionable dogs have in common? This week’s episode.

Cynthia and Heather sit down with comedian and author Ellen Skrmetti for a conversation that somehow covers Southern beauty (not so) secrets, Botox, parenting in midlife, and why life is often completely—and hilariously—cattywampus (which also happens to be the title of Ellen’s new book). Then they catch up on summer adventures, a football game that ended in turf toe, Heather’s growing obsession with Aggie maroon, and the little moments moms never want to forget.

Come laugh with us. It's summer—heaven knows we need it. ☀️

Not the Topiary! 13 Feb 202600:48:18

Heather and Cynthia are back, and Heather willingly chose an 8 a.m. mammogram, post–Super Bowl, and showed up with enough energy to be invited back daily by the staff. (Why strangers get the best version of us remains a mystery worth studying.)

From there, things escalate quickly—Olympics confusion, a headline that probably requires earbuds if your kids are nearby, and Cynthia deeply misunderstanding what the “Quad God” actually refers to. There’s also a serious exploration of which Winter Olympic sport is best suited for hot flashes, gravity, and middle-aged mom bodies.

They also cover: 1.) teen slang that absolutely should not have been rebranded 2.) A family text thread that goes off the rails thanks to geology class and 3.) stranger who chose the wrong front yard, the wrong Amazon package, and the wrong topiary.

If you like stories that start normal and end with, “Wait… WHAT just happened?”—this one’s for you.

Crocheting, Car Chaos and Castle Selfies30 Jan 202600:50:00

We accidentally hit record (on brand) and immediately found ourselves deep in Snowmageddon 2026. Heather hasn’t left her house in days and is thriving with a crochet blanket and zero plans. Cynthia, meanwhile, has hosted friends, neighbors, parents, and possibly a small village because extrovert energy does not freeze. Somewhere in the middle of all this, Heather’s family survives multiple car accidents, a dog attack, and a frozen driveway gate that forces an Uber… on ice.

Cynthia returns from Disney with one lingering question: Isn’t anyone embarrassed anymore? From sexy selfies in front of the castle to grown men in Disney bomber jackets and adults waiting in line for Darth Vader photos with no children present, shame has fully exited the premises.

We wrap things up discussing snow-day survival, snoring husbands, teenage car debates, and the small detail that Cynthia accidentally scheduled a live event on her 25th wedding anniversary. Totally fine. Completely normal. Thanks for tracking with us—we’re cold, slightly unhinged, and doing our best.

No Underwear, No Marvin, and No Self-Swabbing16 Jan 202600:49:34

Cynthia is fresh off a trip to Focus on the Family—where she “focused” on everything except packing the essentials. Meanwhile, Heather gets mildly hit on at the body shop while climbing into their totaled car in cheetah pants. From there we veer straight into the chaos of Dallas mom-life: engagement parties, teens abusing calorie-counting apps, the madness of Junior Symphony Ball ticket day, and a breaking-news conversation about the new (and horrifying) trend of DIY swabbing kits.

It’s another Sidetracked that’s equal parts ridiculous, relatable, and completely unhelpful in all the best ways.

Chips for Breakfast, Vibration Plates for Christmas02 Jan 202600:53:01

Christmas included a full house and a whole lot of stinky armpits for Cynthia, while Heather returns from Mexico after eating chips for breakfast for a week. The two swap gift stories—Heather accidentally opens Lulu underwear in front of her extended family and Cynthia’s vibration plate brings far more laughter than fitness. There’s also a robust discussion around family game fails (including elderly Empire confusion and duplicate Elon Musks), Heather’s dog’s unfortunate post-boarding situation, and Cynthia’s strangely joyful obsession with Amazon returns.

Repos, Rockettes, and Shapewear “Situations”19 Dec 202500:55:17
This episode is officially Sidetracked by Brett—according to Riverside stats and real life. Cynthia outsources a half marathon, still beats Mike, and proves once again that efficiency is a spiritual gift. Meanwhile, Heather’s car gets repossessed, tracked down via Life360, and narrowly saved from auction, which feels extremely on-brand for this show.

From there, it’s New York chaos (13.5 miles walked, Bergdorf snobbery, fake purses, secondhand smoke highs, and Rockettes with an obstructed view), followed by Christmas décor spirals, nutcracker regrets, and a Favorite Things party that deserves its own documentary.

They wrap it all up with wedding season panic, shapewear betrayal in multiple fast-food bathrooms, Chanel lip gloss theft (no apologies), gift-wrapping parties as ministry, and the reminder that motherhood is mostly logistics, friendship, and laughing so you don’t cry.

Mounting Dogs and Menopausal Bras 05 Dec 202500:48:22
Heather and Cynthia are back after Thanksgiving and fully committed to the chaos that is early December—menopausal bras, mounting dogs, viral Walmart sweaters, and all that kinda stuff. Heather recaps her Floribama trip and attending church in a bar. Cynthia counters with peak Christmas in Dallas energy with a decked–out Advent service where the trees were glowing, Silent Night was soaring, and JB chose to bring in …a Rubik’s Cube. During church. Naturally.

They talk about college kids coming home (and changing the whole vibe of the house in about 12 hours), using ChatGPT as a free holiday therapist, and a viral post from a 76-year-old grandma that has them rethinking how much we center everything around the nuclear family at the holidays. There are front-yard cigar sessions, awkward ex-boyfriend run-ins, grandmas eating puzzle pieces, and a deep dive into whether anyone actually needs Matthew McConaughey’s book of poems and prayers under the tree.

It’s another good week to be Sidetracked!

Prairie Drama, Porch Pirates, and Tangled-Up Teens21 Nov 202500:51:27
Another week, another Sidetracked stacked with unfiltered life chaos. Cynthia breaks down her girls’ trip—which included a hotel Little House on the Prairie binge and a heated debate over why Almanzo is clearly a 40-year-old courting a child—followed by her now-infamous “did you poop your pants?” bench incident, and the fence-straddle injury that officially shut down her reproductive department.

Heather brings the world’s worst “wife” hat—so atrocious even a porch pirate said “absolutely not”—plus a teenage car moment that left everyone literally wired. And they both ask ChatGPT “What three celebrities am I a mix of?” with results ranging from Melissa McCarthy, Jennifer Garner, and Joanna Gaines (you better believe Cynthia lost her mind over this.)

Today’s episode promises electric wires, questionable fashion, prairie romance analysis, and a soft pitch to HGTV—you’re welcome.

Pancreatitis, Pre-Check, and Pronouncing Gayla 07 Nov 202500:48:31
Heather and Cynthia come in hot today talking about the “not a birthday party” Heather planned for Cynthia — featuring Bridgerton gowns, Boy Scout uniforms, and Heather wearing her mom’s silk ball gown that allegedly ties 11 different ways (some of which should  probably never see daylight).

Vegas also makes an appearance — where Mike booked a 6:30 a.m. flight “because it was cheaper,” entered Cynthia’s birthday wrong, and waltzed through TSA PreCheck while she stood with the masses questioning her life.

It’s peak Sidetracked today: medical drama, surprise costumes, a gala/gay-la/gah-la pronunciation debate, husbands panicking over dress codes, and moms turning hospital IVs into spa fantasies.

Come for the gallbladder chaos; stay for the gala spiral — and leave wondering if Cynthia has a slot machine problem.

A Bomb Yeti, Butter Sculpture, and 10 Pizzas later24 Oct 202500:49:21
Heather and Cynthia kick things off with a “poop—sorry, chocolate—brown” homecoming dress and TSA confusing a sentimental Yeti stuffed with a toothbrush charger for a small explosive. In related headlines, Heather shares her Oprah dream (because Cynthia really loves hearing people talk about dreams), and there’s talk of a garage door, a mysterious Snapchat troll, and ten unsolicited Papa John’s pizzas.

Today is fully on brand for Sidetracked: mom drama, mean girls, rollercoasters with strangers, and the shocking revelation that Carol Burnett is still alive. Come for the color analysis; stay for the butter sculpture pitch (a Croc with gibbets, obviously), and never forget the age-old truth that people be people-in’.

Low-Cost Vet, High-Cost Water10 Oct 202500:45:40
On today’s episode, we get gloriously sidetracked by life’s adventures—like forgetting to pay the water bill, paying stadium prices for bottled water, and mourning the very first ding on a brand-new car. We also chat about when a low-cost vet clinic is worth it and why asking your husband if you need Botox is… not the question you want answered. It’s funny, relatable, and a little bit practical—come get sidetracked with us!

The Abscess, the Underwear, and the Questionable Cocktail Attire05 Jun 202600:55:21

Summer is here, which means Cynthia is creating ambitious plans for educational walks and homeschooling (which should last until approximately Tuesday at noon), and Heather is simply trying to survive graduation season and a questionable medical intervention.

This week, they compare notes on a wedding, summer parenting, airplane annoyances, and the shocking discovery that "cocktail attire" means something completely different in North Carolina than it does in Dallas.

They also discuss a particular ring bearer who took his responsibilities a little too seriously, a graduation season celebrity sighting, and a reference to the "Harvey Weinstein of Dallas."

Plus, Heather contemplates buying an inflatable Gaga Ball pit, and a routine Target return takes a dark turn when Cynthia is unexpectedly reunited with an unmentionable at customer service.

As always, it's equal parts life advice and public embarrassment.

Introducing the Leanne Morgan of Dallas and Mesh Shoes  26 Sep 202500:55:58

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by multiple car buying experiences  including what happens when two lawyers walk into a used car dealership (spoiler: it gets intense).  The saga of Cynthia’s mace incident continues, and this time, poor Dorthy is the next unexpected victim. Cynthia’s family is trying to keep her humble, reminding her she is not a comedian, all while Heather gives the mail lady a lift to Highland Park Village and Bruce goes all in celebrating her half birthday.

  • Mace Mishaps, College Tours, and Aspartame Withdrawal12 Sep 202500:40:21

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by Heather’s trip to all of the South East United States for a fun college tour. Cynthia shares what happens when JB has an entire floor of the house to himself and finds the mace (does this count as a free chemical peel?). All of this unfolds while Cynthia is trying to quit Coke Zero (again) and walks us through her strategy to finally kick the habit. Plus, Heather is made aware of how she for sure has too many kids at too many schools with an awkward wave situation at Senior Parent Night.

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by Heather’s many recent adventures at Chick-fil-A where she forgets her credit card and then ends up charging $0.37. Cynthia shares the double college drop-off drama (yes, twice!) and how she accidentally discovered her Baptist soul sisters at Brett’s new church. They also compare today’s college kids living in luxury apartments to their own humble dorm days, and Heather fills Cynthia in on the world of 4-H.

    #MacfadyenEverAfter, #YanofTheMarket

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by fondue with teen boys and learning to parallel park at 9 pm the night before the driving test. Cynthia’s on the wedding circuit and has lots of nuptial thoughts and potential hashtags. Heather tries to stay away from controversial topics after causing quite a stir in the DM’s. I mean, who even saw it coming that it was Heather (not Cynthia) who ruffled feathers?

This Feels Like an Intervention: Sidetracked by Brain Health with Dr. Spencer Miller

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by Dr. Miller a neurologist here to talk about brain health, ADHD, and executive functioning. He tells his own fascinating story and path from architecture to neurology. Through getting his degree he discovered brain trauma that he had no recollection of and had to call his mom to get the full story.

Now Dr. Miller helps kids and adults train their brains to focus and be active in the areas of trauma or inactivity so they can focus in school or life. After going through the treatment himself people began to notice the differences in personality and focus. Cynthia is once again feeling like this episode is an intervention, maybe someday she will make it through watching  a whole movie?

Driverless Cars, Dreamsicle Tums, & Garage Fridge Fabulousness22 May 202600:52:22

This week’s Sidetracked includes a college decision fake-out, a daughter trying to square up with a driverless car in Austin, and Heather nearly getting into a roadside altercation while refereeing two grown adults behaving like toddlers.

And in a weird déjà vu situation, Abby made the neighborhood Facebook page again after getting caught stealing freedom laps around the neighborhood. There’s also a revelation that Dreamsicle-flavored Tums may be the downfall of American society, and Heather has officially entered her garage-fridge era and has never felt more bougie about cold beverages in her life.

Did we mention Cynthia also accidentally drove the wrong way through a hospital entrance on her way to a full-body skin check? Another week, another conversation about inappropriate Mother’s Day cards, signature house scents, wildflower seeds, tortilla chip superiority, and the ongoing realization that middle-aged women are apparently one minor inconvenience away from a full public unraveling.

In this episode, Cynthia and Heather get sidetracked by multiple recipes- Mike’s tuna salad (recipe provided by Matthew McConaughey) and a scripture cake. Cynthia brings her adult kids to a 9 year old birthday party and it turns into dead man walking. The unfavorite things party provides bath bombs that could give a UTI.

The One Where Our Moms Hijack the Podcast08 May 202600:59:44

    Happy Mother’s Day from Sidetracked!

This week, Cynthia and Heather celebrate by bringing on two very special guests: their moms. What follows is equal parts heartfelt, nostalgic, and absolutely hilarious. Between forgotten hearing aids, technology struggles, and one mom admitting she doesn’t actually listen to the podcast, the episode is entertaining from the very start.

The conversation somehow moves from Mother’s Day wisdom to Cynthia accidentally coating herself in hairspray instead of self-tanner, Heather preparing for Texas hail with patio cushions and rope, and a memorable conversation involving old bridal lingerie and adult daughters.

It’s a fun, laugh-out-loud episode full of stories about motherhood, family, and the introduction of a new word you’ll never say with a straight face again. And for those wanting more, the Super Trackers bonus episode includes even more stories from Kathy and Dorothy, plus some genuinely meaningful wisdom about faith, prayer, and motherhood.

    S1 Ep23: Sidetracked with Jess Connolly19 Aug 202400:59:21

Are you tired physically, spiritually, or emotionally as a mom trying to do it all? Does the thought of resting make you stressed because you can’t see how? Do you know what kind of rest fills your soul?

Today Jess Connolly joins us to talk about her new book and all the research behind the how, where, and why of rest. Jess’s life is full with being an author, Bible teacher, podcaster, and coach so she knows the challenges of finding pockets of rest in a full schedule. I love how we discuss that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for resting and we are all made differently by our creator with unique ways to recharge. (Don’t forget to take the quiz below to identify what kind of rest you need in this season) Jess reminds us that Jesus had true rest for us even in busy seasons that will lead us to be more awake, alive, and present in our families, ministries, and careers. We end the podcast by getting sidetracked and talk about everything from theology books to ice machines- join us for tons of truth and fun.

S1 Ep22: Sidetracked by the Olympics, Mammograms, and Family Gambling02 Aug 202400:56:13

Out of the gate today we are into all the TMI topics like how to wear your gown at the Doctor’s office, mammograms, and what stage of menopause we are in. (Did you know there are five?) Cynthia’s family keeps it real as usual by washing their healthy vitamins full of fruits and veggies down with Diet Dr. Pepper.

Next up we discuss the Olympics, from what our favorite sports are to handball and break dancing, which we are pretty sure are made-up sports. I rehash my prolific synchronized swimming career and share how I impressed (read tortured) my boys on vacation by showing off my skills. Both of us are fresh off of summer family trips where I bribed my boys to play family games, and Cynthia got recognized in a hotel lobby while sternly talking to her family about taking a good picture.

Cynthia is reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont and gives some ideas on how to slow down and take note of the little things in life so we can remember them later. I share how the pressure to list all the needed family improvements can get overwhelming so I am choosing to list what is going well this season. Come laugh with us and be reminded that no matter how messy summer is making memories and taking time with family is invaluable.

Day Naps, Dead Roaches, and a Delightful Surprise Guest24 Apr 202600:52:19

It’s the typical Sidetracked chaos when Heather casually drops a surprise guest into the mix. Cynthia spends way too long preparing (panic-researching every Christian comedian she can find) just to avoid saying the wrong name. Somehow, she correctly lands on Tim Hawkins, and the conversation quickly turns into stand-up, “years of failure,” and whether Cynthia could casually open a show (she’s confident she could).

From there, it goes exactly where you’d expect—and nowhere you’d predict.

There’s a cautionary tale about daytime napping that ends with a car vs. gate situation, a middle-of-the-night roach encounter that absolutely no one needed to hear—but now you do—and a group of grown women at a luxury hotel fully committing to rescuing baby ducks like it’s their life’s purpose.

They also recap a next-level themed Mahjong party and float the idea of “adult field trips” (name still pending).

It’s fast, funny, and completely unhinged—exactly as intended.

    S1 Ep21: Sidetracked with Makayla Noble15 Jul 202400:47:02

On September 20, 2021, Makayla Noble, a world-champion cheerleader, suffered an injury that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury. Both Cynthia and I were part of her extended community and were getting updates on her healing journey and how to pray for her. Today we have the honor of interviewing her to see how God has used her life to glorify Him even when things don’t go as planned.

From the moment of her accident, Makayla felt the overwhelming peace of God, that He was going to take care of her and had a plan. She has mourned her physical body and what she thought the future would look like but remains in the truth that “God is not done with me yet”. Come along with us as we hear Makayla’s story.

S1 Ep20: Sidetracked by Naming Body Parts, Steaks for Lunch, and Summer Dilemmas (when you’re not in Italy)05 Jul 202400:43:10

**earbud alert–if you listen with little ones around may want to pop in the ole earbuds or be prepared to have lots of conversations ;) **

We kick off today looking like we are going to two separate events, with one dressed up and one in athleisure. Are you team shorts or team dresses for summer? We give some summer updates including how to feed ALL of the teens that are home and my 1980’s drink that is keeping 4 boys hydrated. Social media has us convinced that everyone is traveling to Italy this summer, was there a BOGO deal we missed?

Recapping the last month includes a funeral for our young friend Pike who lost his battle with leukemia and how powerfully his family honored him at the touching memorial. I was reeling emotionally going from graduation to funeral to medieval times with sixth graders then wisdom tooth removal for my college-bound son. Join us today as we get sidetracked and share the hard and joyful parts of summer 2024.

    S1 Ep19: Sidetracked with Beth McCord17 Jun 202400:57:57

Today’s podcast kicks off with a real-life example of how the enneagram can improve relationships and facilitate healthy conflict resolution. Heather sent our guest, Beth McCord, a less than friendly email recently and Beth responded with grace and understanding because she knows how to navigate our personalities, what a gift.

Our guest Beth is a well-known speaker, author, teacher, enneagram coach, podcaster, and more. She has honed her skill of understanding personalities while helping people find freedom in Christ.

We ask her the big question of how to approach the enneagram from a Biblical perspective when there are so many rumors swirling around that its roots are ungodly. At the end of the day, this is a tool to bring freedom to relationships and Beth reminds us the goal is to be a non-anxious connected presence to our kids. Her new book is about motherhood and how we approach our children and conflict based on our personalities and how to heal in unhealthy areas so we can be whole. Stick around to the end where she nails our enneagram types when it comes to mom life, work, and friendship.

    S1 Ep18: Sidetracked by American Idol, Father’s Day, and Eyebrows07 Jun 202400:43:13

Today’s sidetracked starts off with Cynthia airing her grievances. We talk about eyebrows and all of the products we use to get them to grow. Then move on to an update about our Patreons which we find out are the Wal-Mart and Target of that platform. I guess once you start posting content people remember they are paying for it. We also talk about our local celebrity from American Idol, Jack Blocker, and break down the difference between the new American Idol and the era of Simon Cowell. Turns out we are both the Simon Cowell of our families sharing brutally honest truth daily.

We wrap up with Father’s Day, and I get emotional sharing how my dad was the picture of a Godly leader and made it easy to trust the Lord. Cynthia shares the challenges and struggles of this season of life with teens and parents who need a little more help, there is always something to do. Both Bruce and Mike have shown up for our families in incredible ways and we honor them by talking about their strengths. Come laugh, cry, and rant with us as we get sidetracked.
