B1E14 - The Conclusion - A Study in Scarlet - Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Book 1, Part 2, Episode 14 Title: A Study in Scarlet Overview: A Study in Scarlet is an 1887 detective novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become the most famous detective duo in literature. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, a consulting detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." The story, and its main characters, attracted little public interest when it first appeared. Only 11 complete copies of the magazine in which the story first appeared, Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887, are known to exist now and they have considerable value. Although Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels in the original canon. The novel was followed by The Sign of the Four, published in 1890. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of detective fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. A Study in Scarlet is composed of 2 parts with 7 chapters in each part. Part 1 - Sine Nomine includes the first 7 episodes née chapters: B1E1 - Mr. Sherlock Holmes, B1E2 - The Science of Deduction, B1E3 - The Lauriston Gardens Mystery, B1E4 - What John Rance Had to Tell, B1E5 - Our Advertisement Brings a Visitor, B1E6 - Tobias Gregson Shows What He Can Do, B1E7 - Light in the Darkness. B1E2 - The Science of Deduction - A Study in Scarlet - Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Book 1, Part 1, Episode 2 Title: A Study in Scarlet Overview: A Study in Scarlet is an 1887 detective novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. B8E10 - His Last Bow - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Book 8, Part 2, Episode 10 Title: His Last Bow Overview: His Last Bow, née His Last Bow: Some (Later) Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes is a 1917 collection of previously published Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including the titular short story, "His Last Bow: The War Service of Sherlock Holmes" (1917). The collection's first US edition adjusts the anthology's subtitle to Some Later Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes. All editions contain a brief preface, by John H. Watson, M.D. as follows. "The friends of Mr. Sherlock Holmes will be glad to learn that he is still alive and well, though somewhat crippled by occasional attacks of rheumatism. He has, for many years, lived in a small farm upon the Downs five miles from Eastbourne, where his time is divided between philosophy and agriculture. During this period of rest he has refused the most princely offers to take up various cases, having determined that his retirement was a permanent one. The approach of the German war caused him, however, to lay his remarkable combination of intellectual and practical activity at the disposal of the Government, with historical results which are recounted in His Last Bow. Several previous experiences which have lain long in my portfolio have been added to His Last Bow so as to complete the volume." His Last Bow is composed of 10 episodes née chapters with the first two episodes being a lengthy, two-part story consisting of The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge: B8E1 - The Singular Experience of Mr. John Scott Eccles, B8E2 - The Tiger of San Pedro, B8E3 - The Adventure of The Cardboard Box, B8E4 - The Adventure of the Red Circle - Part 1, B8E5 - The Adventure of the Red Circle - Part 2, B8E6 - The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, B8E7 - The Adventure of the Dying Detective, B8E8 - The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax, B8E9 - The Adventure of the Devil's Foot, and B8E10 - His Last Bow: The War Service of Sherlock Holmes.
