907: LEADERSHIP STORIES: Historical Models of Leadership That Continue to Be Harmful01 Oct 202400:24:00
While I’m not much of a history buff, I am fascinated by humans and human behavior - even ancient human behavior. So, when presented with the opportunity to examine historical models of leadership in my Masters of Organizational Leadership program, I was all in.  In studying leadership models across centuries and then within the decades of the last 120 years, there are undeniable patterns of leadership that are mostly about power and dominance and almost exclusively about the power and dominance of men.  In this episode, we will look at historical models of leadership which for centuries involved leaders who could easily be characterized as narcissists with their tyrannical, manipulative behavior in which they were commonly charming and gaslighting their followers, especially women, in equal proportion. It’s pretty fascinating to see how much of this behavior endures in leadership models today.   When we look at these models of leadership, we can see how these depictions of leaders over time have continued to “inspire” models of leadership today. We have repeatedly created systems and structures of leadership that center leaders in roles to have power OVER their followers rather than power WITH their followers.   Understanding the patterns present in these systems can be useful in addressing, disrupting, and dismantling the sexist power structures that commonly exist in these systems, even as we claim to have created new systems that include equal rights for all regardless of gender.   This episode will open your eyes to how we are still very much settling for, if not embracing, aspects of historical models of leadership to the great detriment of women and people who carry marginalized identities. Yet, hope is not lost. There is still time to do better. And, we will.  Link mentioned: Book: Burnout by Emily Nagoski, PhD and Amelia Nagoski, DMA We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 906: LEADERSHIP TIPS: The Myth of “Safe Spaces” 24 Sep 202400:27:57
I have been in countless rooms over the last few years where the person leading designates the space a “safe space”. This designation is usually given right before an invitation for people to share something that may require some level of vulnerability. While I think the intentions of the folks saying this are good, I think there is actually more potential for harm than good when we deem a space a “safe space” without very seriously considering what creates actual safety for people and how tremendously one person’s needs for safety can vary from the next. We also need to recognize that anyone’s needs around safety can change on a day-to-day basis. So, it is not on a leader to claim a space as “safe” because there is no way a leader can guarantee actual safety.   I always say that a space is only as safe as the person who feels the least amount of safety deems it to be.   While we cannot guarantee safety, there are definitely steps we can take to build a culture of trust and psychological safety that can go a long way. If you’re looking to build a culture of safety there are a handful of things to consider.   If I were to come into your organization and do a psychological safety audit of sorts, here are some things I would examine: How do people talk to each other How do people talk about each other How are mistakes handled How do leaders apologize and take ownership of their mistakes How is support demonstrated in good times and bad How are people given the opportunity to get to know one another as humans - not just coworkers with specific skill sets What routines and rituals are in place that build trust over time How transparent are leaders How accessible are leaders to all levels of team members What is the reputation of the HR department Does HR make it clear what reportable offenses are and how to report them In this episode, I talk about steps you can take to build a foundation of trust and psychological safety so that when you are on the brink of asking people to share ideas or be vulnerable you don’t need to make a “safe space” announcement because safety is implied, felt, and held automatically.   We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 807: Dr. Amy Hoyt: Symptoms of Trauma and How to Start Mending Trauma 20 Sep 202300:54:57
Dr. Hoyt is certified in Traumatic Stress Studies and is the founder of Mending Trauma, a digital mental health company that specializes in trauma recovery. As a former professor, Dr. Hoyt led research teams in Africa looking at mass trauma, agency, and forgiveness. She transitioned into the online mental health space during the pandemic in order to help fill the growing mental health need. Dr. Hoyt is obsessed with teaching others to reprogram their brains and heal their nervous systems so they can break generational cycles and live with more joy. She is a mom of 5 kids, 3 of whom are differently abled. She lives with her husband and children in the Ozark mountains. I appreciated this conversation with Amy beyond measure. As weird as it sounds, I love talking about trauma, especially with a seasoned expert. I had so many lightbulb moments with Amy, as I realized some of my own symptoms of trauma. Whether you have endured small or large-scale traumas in your life, it’s likely you will see yourself in parts of this conversation - allowing you to connect some dots that may lead to some healing.  Listen in to hear Amy share: What trauma is by definition: The symptoms of trauma The symptoms of trauma that are more prevalent in moms The difference between hypervigilance and hyperarousal The difference between trauma and toxic stress The power of being benevolently curious The two ways trauma is passed down to our children: genetically and through our own behavioral interactions with them  How to use micro steps to start processing your trauma in gentle ways  The importance of processing the collective trauma of COVID and its impact on our daily lives, our work, and motherhood Links mentioned: Join My September Retreat for Women Leaders at Work: Influence & Ignite: Be the Boss Your People Have Been Waiting For: shamelessmom.com/leaders Join my October Retreat for Women Entrepreneurs: Influence & Ignite: Be the CEO and Thought Leader You Were Born to Be: shamelessmom.com/bizretreat Connect with Amy and her Team: www.mendingtrauma.com Take the Trauma Quiz to find out your trauma response: www.mendingtrauma.com/quiz Amy’s Podcast: The Mending Trauma Podcast Amy on IG Amy on FB Mending Trauma on FB Amy on LinkedIn We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 806: Managing Your Expectations vs Your Reality 18 Sep 202300:35:40
5 years ago, my husband and I celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary in New Orleans. It was a ton of fun. It was near the end of that trip that we started talking about, “What will we do for 15 years??” Of course, 15 years felt like decades away at the time. And it kind of was. While 5 years is 5 years no matter how you measure it, the way the world has changed over the last 5 years feels like a lifetime of change at breakneck speed.   5 years ago, we talked about how it would be so fun to celebrate our 15-year anniversary in Napa, with dinner at the French Laundry (a super fancy restaurant we had heard about through our restaurant industry friends.)   This plan seems silly now. Spending that kind of money on a meal when my husband has been unemployed for months. And, even before his layoff, our priorities have shifted and evolved as the world has shifted and evolved.   With so many unknowns, we had decided we would just go out to dinner at a modest local restaurant.   And, it was perfect! It was exactly what we needed on that day. We didn’t need the thing we thought we wanted 5 years ago.   While we once had these lavish expectations for this occasion, our reality called for something else. And that something else was exactly what we needed.   That doesn’t mean that the lavish expectation isn’t still sitting with me. It is. But I have trained myself to let go of expectations because reality has shown up to laugh in my face so many times over the last few years. I know I’m not alone in this. I know most (all?) of you have also experienced this!  So, as we navigate this world of managing our expectations vs. our realities, how do we sit with outcomes? In this episode, I share 6 outcomes I’ve experienced from sitting in reality when my expectations have been stolen, shifted, or flipped upside down. 804: Sometimes It’s Better to Take the Long Route11 Sep 202300:34:47
We are naturally programmed to find the shortest route from Point A to Point B. We want to be fast and efficient. We don’t want to waste time with unnecessary detours. We want to check the box that signals DONE. Mission accomplished. Task completed.   However, if you look back at anything you’ve done in life that took a little extra time or required a detour (that might have been very frustrating at the moment), you can likely see some sort of gift or a little bit of magic that you wouldn’t have been able to receive if you swiftly moved from Point A to Point B without interruption, distraction or detour. It is the detours and the squiggly, indirect routes from Point A to Point B that create space for unique opportunities to build relationships, learn some of life’s best lessons, charter new territory, practice a new skill, fumble and fail your way forward, grow in ways you didn’t know you needed to grow, find little bits of magic you didn’t know you were looking for.  In this episode, I talk through why the squiggly, indirect route is often the best route - even if you’re the kind of person (like me!) who doesn’t like to waste a single moment on something that appears to be unnecessary at the onset. As an experienced investor and investment trainer, she has conducted workshops, seminars, and one-on-one coaching with thousands of individuals and businesses from all walks of life. 797: One Shameless Thing: Embrace Change 17 Aug 202300:15:14
A few years ago, I was listening to a podcast interview with Brene Brown and Jim Collins and she shared this quote from Jim Collins’ book, Good to Great, “Uncertainty is chronic. Instability is permanent. Disruption is common.” Hearing this made me so mad that I immediately stopped listening. I later returned to the interview because I knew this was a lesson I needed to learn. A lesson around embracing change - and especially about embracing change as a constant.   This week I am giving you ONE SHAMELESS THING to Embrace Change in order to manage your mindset in a world that seems to be evolving much faster than we can keep up with!  ONE SHAMELESS THING is created with one thing in mind - to give you ONE thing - just ONE thing - to make today a better day. My purpose is to give you the hope, optimism and POWER you need to make today whatever you want to make it - even if life is throwing you one curveball after another.  Enjoy this shorty episode. And know that I am in this with you. 795: Who You Are Anywhere Is Who You Are Everywhere14 Aug 202300:31:26
WHO YOU ARE ANYWHERE IS WHO YOU ARE EVERYWHERE. Who are you when you don’t have anything to gain? Who are you when no one is watching? Who are you when someone who has less than you needs something you have? Who are you when you see someone struggling? Who are you when there is an opportunity to share your time and resources? Who are you when there is an opportunity to perform a random act of kindness for a stranger? Last week, I was out on a bike ride and got a flat tire 5 miles away from home. I got off my bike to fix my flat and realized I had the wrong pump and without a valve adapter, there was no way I could re-inflate my tire. I did not have a valve adapter. I sat there in the rain for about 20 minutes - sitting in the wet dirt on the side of the trail, with my bike disassembled. The number of cyclists who rode passed me: at least 30. The number of people who acknowledged a woman sitting in the rain on the side of a trail with a broken down bike: 0 When no one stopped for me after 15 minutes or so, I started trying to flag people down.  I called out to folks as they approached me, “Excuse me, do you have a….” And my voice would trail off as they whizzed by me without any sort of acknowledgment. If you’re the person who whizzes by the woman in the rain with the broken down bike, I’m going to assume you are also the person who walks by the person experiencing homelessness and acts like they are invisible. I’m going to assume you are the person who speaks in meetings without asking those who look or think differently than you for their ideas and opinions. I’m going to assume are not teaching your children how to treat people who are different than you with kindness and compassion because you are not demonstrating that yourself (unless perhaps it benefits you.) In this episode, I share how I finally got help, as well as how to check yourself in terms of how you show up for others.    We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 794: One Shameless Thing: Use Your Voice 10 Aug 202300:16:26
Using your voice can be downright scary. But it can also be the most powerful tool you have. When you use your voice you expand and extend your edges. You move that line where your comfort zone ends and your discomfort begins and your comfort and capacity around using your voice grows tremendously.  This week I am giving you ONE SHAMELESS THING to Use Your Voice in order to stand up for yourself, the people you love, and the ideas you want to share with the world.  ONE SHAMELESS THING is created with one thing in mind - to give you ONE thing - just ONE thing - to make today a better day. My purpose is to give you the hope, optimism, and POWER you need to make today whatever you want to make it - even if life is throwing you one curveball after another.  Enjoy this shorty episode. And know that I am in this with you. Always.  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 793: Sabrina Justison: What Happens to a Mother When Her Son Is Incarcerated for Murder 09 Aug 202300:59:53
Content Warning: this episode talks about murder and the prison system.   Sabrina Justison is a curriculum developer, speaker, and writer, wife to Fred, and mom or step-mom to 7 grown kids, plus grandmother to 6. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit, PrisonCare. One of those grown kids is "J," who is mentally ill and in prison, serving a very long sentence for murder. Sabrina is an advocate for people like J who are incarcerated, in particular those living with mental illness. The need for sweeping prison reform is undeniable for sure, but in the meantime, while we wait for legislation and funding, no matter WHAT our politics are, we can offer tangible support to the people inside the fence, simply because they are in need, and they matter. In particular, the mental health needs of prison residents AND corrections staff are overwhelming. For example: on average, three Corrections Officers die by suicide every day in the US. Incarcerated individuals are more than twice as likely to be significantly mentally ill than those outside of prisons.   Through PrisonCare, Sabrina is committed to humazing people who are incarcerated and supporting the mental health of our incarcerated community members and Corrections Officers.  Listen in to hear Sabrina share: What it has been like to be the mother of a child who is serving a very long prison sentence for murder How she took her background in psychology and the arts to found her non profit, PrisonCare How she started to pick up the pieces and move forward after her son was incarcerated The critical lack of mental health support in prisons and jails How we, as a society, have completely dehumanized prisoners and created a system that is harmful to prisoners and all of society The surprising parallels and similarities between the lives of the prisoners and Corrections Officers in the prison system What PrisonCare does and how to adopt a prison Links mentioned: Learn about Prison Care: prisoncare.org Connect with Sabrina: sabrinajustison.com The Prison Care Podcast: theprisoncarepodcast.buzzsprout.com  Sabrina on Facebook Prison Care on FB Private PrisonCare FB Group Sabrina on Instagram PrisonCare on IG Sabrina on Twitter PrisonCare on Twitter Sabrina on LinkedIn PrisonCare on LinkedIn We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 792: Perfectionism as a Patriarchal Social Construct 07 Aug 202300:36:03
You may know by now that I could preach all day about how women are programmed by the patriarchy to show up in this world in very specific ways that primarily (and almost exclusively) benefit white men. Please know when I say “patriarchy” I am referring to a system that is not only harmful to women but also undermines and completely stunts the emotional development of most men. This system benefits few, but the few who benefit have the most tremendous power - globally. Our patriarchal society has created tons of social constructs that lead us to unknowingly behave in ways that benefit some (men) while holding others back (including but not limited to: women, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, people with neurodiversities, people with disabilities, and people with larger bodies) Over the years, I’ve talked about mom guilt as a social construct and imposter syndrome as a social construct. Both of these social constructs are part of a system that intentionally makes women and moms think and behave in specific ways that ultimately limit how they show up in the world. These limitations create more space for others (men) to have more opportunities to find success, build wealth, and amass power.   I recently started doing some thinking on perfectionism as a social construct. Once I started thinking this through, I knew there had to be research to back up my hypotheses. So, I went and found it. In today’s episode, I’m going to talk about perfectionism as a social construct. We will dig into different forms of perfectionism, as well as how you can start to reject perfectionism in order to get out of your head and get on with your life. Buckle up. This is a good one! 791: One Shameless Thing: Quit Something 03 Aug 202300:15:01
There should be no shame in your quitting game. For years now, I have preached to my clients, “Be a quitter!” Rather than always adding more to your plate in an effort to overdo, overproduce, and over-prove yourself, how about releasing things from your plate as your needs, desires, values, and schedule change over time?  This week I am giving you ONE SHAMELESS THING to Quit Something in order to make more space for the things that are most important and fulfilling to your right now. ONE SHAMELESS THING is created with one thing in mind - to give you ONE thing - just ONE thing - to make today a better day. My purpose is to give you the hope, optimism, and POWER you need to make today whatever you want to make it - even if life is throwing you one curveball after another. 789: Brain Tricks to Manage Your Mindset in Tough Times 31 Jul 202300:26:32
If you’re anything like me, tough times might send you into a tailspin of brewing, stewing, and rumination around all the things that are not working out for you. While it’s totally appropriate (and necessary!) to feel all the feels when the universe seems to be working against you, it’s dysfunctional, if not harmful, to allow yourself to sit in these feelings for too long. At some point, you have to take responsibility for how you want to manage your mindset. When you are looking to shift your mindset from brewing, stewing, and ruminating to something more functional (and enjoyable), there are a few ways that you can trick your brain to whip it back into shape and allow it to work with you rather than against you.   In this episode, we will talk through these 5 different ways you can “rearrange your brain” in order to keep going and move forward even when hard moments end up lasting for entire seasons. When you give your brain the opportunity to let yourself escape, release urgency, create the correct proof, and come up with creative options, everything can start to shift for you.  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 788: One Shameless Thing: Shut Down Overwhelm 27 Jul 202300:15:28
It is so easy to become confused, if not consumed, by what the outside world says is important versus what you need to focus on for yourself and those closest to you right in this moment based on your specific needs right in this moment.  This week I am giving you ONE SHAMELESS THING to Shut Down Overwhelm in order to discern what you really need to be focusing on right now. Always.  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 895: Manage the Mental Load of Motherhood with More Ease 29 Jul 202400:28:27
As you prepare for motherhood, you think about things like what color to paint the nursery, which car seat is the safest, and what your birth plan should include. You carefully pick out cute tiny clothes, booties, and hats while you dream about sweet snuggles and that first baby smile.   You likely don’t think about the mental load of motherhood. You don’t consider how much your brain will have to expand, compartmentalize, and carry. Shortly after that sweet baby arrives, you feel the intensity and demands of your daily life balloon in ways you never imagined. This continues for years; decades, actually.  If you feel like you're carrying a heavy load all the time, you are. The mental load of motherhood is immense. Over time, you become numb to it. You don’t realize you're chronically tired, overwhelmed, anxious, and emotionally drained because it feels normal.  This is motherhood. That feeling of not recognizing yourself, forgetting who you were before kids, and not knowing who you'll be when the kids no longer need you? It's normal. The whiplash from rapidly switching roles from mom to professional, family project manager, and community caregiver that leaves your head spinning? Also normal. The constant trade-offs that cost you time, energy, and joy? Also normal. I’m not saying this to make you feel worse—only to point out that this is pretty much a universal experience of motherhood. You are not alone. What if acknowledging all this helped you see how much you are carrying, while also recognizing that change is necessary - and possible? In this episode, we explore four ways to navigate the mental load of motherhood, helping you find more mental ease, joy, and comfort in your daily life. 787: Taylor Morrison: The Broken System Within the Self Care Industry26 Jul 202300:50:33
Taylor Elyse Morrison turned being bad at self-care—and being firmly convinced of every human’s potential—into a career. She’s the founder of the media company Inner Workout, and the author of a book by the same name. Recently named one of Fortune’s 10 Innovators Shaping the Future of Health, Taylor is tired of aspirational 'wellness as usual.' Instead, she builds businesses, content, and experiences that make well-being and personal development more accessible. You're just as likely to see Taylor facilitating a workshop at a Fortune 100 as you are to see her talking about TikTok and body image with a high school class. Wherever she goes, Taylor's sure to use her coaching, mindfulness, and movement training to meet people where they're at and offer actionable steps toward creating a world without burnout. As someone who also believes a lot of the self-care industry is just a big marketing scheme, I was very excited to talk to Taylor about her experience and expertise. This conversation did not disappoint. I think you’ll learn a lot from Taylor and take a different look at what “self-care” means to you!  Listen in to hear Taylor share:  The difference between self-care and self expertise The problem around accessibility in the self-care industry How to make choices by asking yourself, “Is it myself or is it the system that is the problem?” when you’re questioning yourself and your needs How to start grounding yourself and growing your roots in your self expertise The importance of knowing how your inner wisdom speaks specifically to you How to become a better communicator as you become a better self expert Links mentioned: Connect with Taylor: Innerworkout.co Take the Assessment: Innerworkout.co/take-care-profile Get Taylor’s book: Inner Workout Taylor’s Podcast: Inner Warmup Taylor on IG: @taylorelysemorrison and @innerworkout We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 786: 5 Simple Steps to Leaving a Legacy You’re Proud Of24 Jul 202300:34:16
What will people say about you at your funeral? When you attend a funeral and hear all the lovely things people say about the person who has passed on, you may find yourself thinking, “What will people say about me when I am no longer here?”  While you certainly should not live your life constantly worrying about what others are thinking and saying about you, it is worth considering the legacy you are building and whether or not you might want to be more intentional about your legacy.   I was at a funeral recently and as multiple people spoke about the person who had passed, I noted how the same words and themes came up over and over again. It made me pause and think about the words and themes people might use to describe me and the life I have lived if something awful were to happen to me right now. In this episode, I talk through how to build a legacy in simple ways, starting now. This isn’t intended to upend your life so you can go be someone totally new. Rather, it’s intended to give you some guidelines and guardrails (some of which you’re likely already following) to keep living in a direction that you love while building something you feel great about.   We will talk through 5 Legacy Leverages (ways you can leverage building your legacy right away) as well as 5 Legacy Leaches (the things that quickly take away, distract, or totally deter you from building a legacy you love.   We love the sponsors that make this show possible! If you have an anxious, jumpy brain like me, you might have a constant, urgent need to talk, share, contribute, make your point known, be seen, be a fixer, and get the right answer out before anyone else in the room… Do ya feel me?!  However, what is gained by sharing (shoving?) our thoughts and ideas with others at breakneck speed can just as quickly be lost when we skip the opportunity to step back, get curious, really listen, and dig into engaging and enriching conversations.   So, how do we do this - especially if it’s not how your brain was innately designed?! In this episode, we will talk about how you can become a more curious person and better relationship builder by: Identifying as a great question asker  Listening actively without formulating your response  Expanding conversations instead of managing or dominating them Suspending judgment and the need to immediately respond to or counter everyone who thinks differently than you Showing genuine interest in others and their thoughts & ideas  Embracing silence  As you integrate these curiosity practices, you will find yourself enjoying (winning!) Deeper, richer relationships More safe and trusting relationships Empathy toward those who might have different lived experiences than you The ability to see, understand, and embrace diverse viewpoints A departure from always needing to be right to always being open-minded  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 772: Monica Plath: Creating Care Transparency for Our Children and Aging Parents 21 Jun 202300:45:29
As a working mom of two active toddlers, Monica Plath intimately knows the anxieties parents and caregivers face when they are apart from their children. That’s how she came up with her idea for Littlebird, a wearable tracking device that offers parents and caregivers peace of mind and real-time data about their children. In the middle of the pandemic, Monica found herself on ZOOM while nursing a newborn and meeting with software developers to meet milestones for deployment. During this time, she also wrote a children's book for charity and created a wine for moms from unused grapes from an award-winning vineyard --- all from rural Yakima Washington. The pandemic enabled her to go digital, file 4 patents, raise 2 million in pre-seed money, and resource the best minds in the business to create Littlebird while raising 2 small children as her marriage was falling apart.   Listen in to hear Monica share: Her reluctance around being a tech founder, but then shifting to embrace it What inspired her to create Little Bird when she was pregnant with a toddler under toe and knew she needed a way to support and monitor her toddler to keep him safe How Little Bird answers these questions in real-time: Is my child safe?  What is my child doing?  How is my child feeling? The power and importance of “care transparency” How our current care economy is underserving parents Her advice to other moms out there with an idea and how to take initiative to get started Links mentioned: Get a Littlebird: www.littlebird.care use promo code SHAMELESS to save $50 on your Littlebird Monica on Instagram & Twitter: @monicamplath Littlebird on Instagram & Twitter @littlebirdcares  Monica on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/monicaplath Littlebird on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@littlebirdcares We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 771: How to Improve Adaptability in Motherhood and Life19 Jun 202300:32:40
A couple of years ago, I was listening to Brene Brown’s podcast and she shared this quote from Jim Collins that made me so mad I had to stop the episode: “Uncertainty is chronic. Instability is permanent. Disruption is common.” Brene shared this quote in the middle of the pandemic when things were at an all-time low for so many.   The reason I was so mad was because she and Jim were so right. It wasn’t just the pandemic that made uncertainty, instability, and disruption chronic, permanent, and common. This is how the world always has been and always will be. I wasn’t prepared for that last part. It will always be this way. It was as if I had been living in this dreamland in which I had convinced myself that at some point I would arrive at this beautiful destination where everything would finally be certain, stable, and free of disruption.   Thanks for wrecking my dream Brene and Jim!   But when I continued to think about this, I realized that I had already proven over and over and over again how adaptable I was. Life, career, relationships, and - most certainly - motherhood had trained me to adapt, pivot, change gears, and take share right turns on a very regular basis. The same is true for you. Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but you too are adaptable AF. But if you aren’t owning and honoring you may be missing out on really juicy opportunities and invitations to make decisions that allow for great expansion and possibility in your life.   In this episode, we will talk about how to improve your adaptability in motherhood and life by:   Honoring your scrappiness Owning your creative problem-solving skills Checking your ego Embracing change as a constant Becoming comfortable being uncomfortable Committing to long-term growth mindset We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 768: How Your Lack of Transparency Is Harmful to Others 12 Jun 202300:34:45
For years I tried to attain what my mentors had. I assumed that once you got to a certain place in life, you would be all set - forever. You would finally know how to manage all the things and feel confident in all the things. I kept desperately hoping I could find the level of mastery my coaches had because then life would be full of ease. For a number of years in a row, I chose ease as one of my “words of the year”. I chose this word because when I looked around it seemed others had actually found this elusive ease. My coaches, random people I followed on Instagram, other school moms - all seemed to have it. I figured if they could find it so could I - DAMMIT. But over time - one by one - I started to see cracks. People who seemed to “have it all together” offered glimpses into their real lives. There was definitely much less ease than I expected. Sometimes, there was no ease at all. Instead, there was uncertainty, struggle, raw pain, and sometimes straight-up trauma. When we only show the world our pretty, shiny parts, we are doing a disservice to all women. It is in showing up with transparency (as long as it is safe to do so), that we allow other women to do the same.   We have been socialized to give 110%, to actively desire and desperately pursue perfectionism, to quietly keep our struggles behind closed doors. This greatly harms women while upholding and benefitting the Patriarchy.  By only showing the shiny parts of our lives and withholding the more authentic pieces of ourselves, we harm other women by:  Creating unreal and unreasonable expectations for other women Upholding the social construct of perfectionism (that only exists for women) Perpetuating loneliness and isolation for women (and moms especially) Undermining authentic connection and the collective growth of women on a societal level Eroding the collective mental health of women & moms Impairing and inhibiting your relationships  In this episode, I talk through how we have been socialized to hide certain parts of ourselves, why this works out great for men, and how you can start to practice transparency in safe ways in order to show up more authentically and create space for other women to do the same. 893: What Era Are You In?22 Jul 202400:29:37
I have to tread lightly here, lest I offend my Swiftie listeners! This episode is the only one in which I’ve spoken about Taylor Swift. Generally speaking, I feel wholly unqualified to speak about her, as I recognize I don’t know nearly as much about her as most of her rabid fans do. However, as someone who has watched her sweep the globe in one fell swoop over the last 18 months, I find her fascinating to watch and learn from.  As I have watched people share experiences from the Eras Tour on social media, I started thinking about Taylor’s impact over the course of decades, or eras. I’ve seen many outfits and costumes representing her various eras. This got me thinking - what about my eras? What about your eras? What era are you in? What era are you coming from? And, which era are you heading toward?   If we take a moment to characterize the era we are in, it seems we may be able to influence who we are in this current moment as well as who we are becoming. This feels powerful. In this episode, we talk about the importance of knowing what era you’re in, what you want to release in this era, what you want to embrace in this era, and what this era says about who you are becoming.  Link mentioned: Attend my Influence & Ignite Retreat for Women Business Owners: shamelessmom.com/retreat We love the sponsors that make this show possible! 765: Guest Panel: Prepping Your Family for Pride 05 Jun 202301:06:55
Happy Pride, my friends! A couple of weeks ago, I had the absolute honor to moderate a panel of LGBTQIA+ leaders who were collaborating in support of The Pride and Joy Foundation as they had an incredible conversation about how to support our LGBTQIA+ youth during Pride month (and all year long!) When the conversation was over, I asked Executive Director of the Pride and Joy Foundation founder (and past SMA guest), Elena Joy Thurston, if we could share the recording of this conversation as a podcast episode. I just knew our community would love to learn from these leaders. I’m so grateful Elena said “YES!” And shout out to her producer Jessica Whipple who brilliantly edited our conversation so it could be used as podcast content.   On the panel, we have: Junior Mintt (she/her), a “Black Transwoman, Drag Preacher, and Businesswoman” Kalyela Josephs (they/she), a “Queer Spiritual coach” whose work has focused on helping families of color understand how to integrate LGBTQ+ culture into their family culture.   Rae McDaniel (they/them) recently released their groundbreaking book, “Gender Magic”. They are also a licensed therapist supporting individuals and families with gender transition.   Elena Joy (she/her), an ExMormon mom of four kids who has also been featured in the award-winning documentary “CONVERSION”, has a viral TEDx talk, and is now the volunteer Executive Director of Pride and Joy Foundation.  C Rizleris (they/them), a contributing writer for the Pride and Joy Foundation, as well as a member of the Transgender Task Force Committee for the city of Greensboro, NC. Listen in to hear this panel discuss: What drag is and what it is not How we can engage in healthy and supportive conversation around gender identity with our youth How to talk about non-supportive friends & family about gender identity How you can use Pride Month to increase your allyship with the LGBTQIA+ Community How to create safety & well-being for our youth all year long - beyond Pride month The best ways to engage rural conservative communities in Pride Month activities  How can you support your youth with various intersectionalities (IE: ethnic background, neurodivergence, etc) during Pride month Links mentioned: Podcast: Out of Queeriosity  Book: Gender Magic by Rae McDaniels Connect with Kalyela: kalyelaj.com Connect with Rae McDaniel: rae-mcdaniel.com Connect with Elena and/or Support the Pride and Joy Foundation: https://www.prideandjoyfoundation.com/ Connect with C Rizleris: crizleris.com/ Pride and Joy Foundation on IG Elena Joy Thurston on IG Junior Mintt on IG Rae McDaniel on IG C Rizleris on IG Jessica Whipple on IG We love the sponsors that make this show possible!
