Gentle Yoga & Prayer Circle for the Animals22 Apr 202401:00:52

Join us for a harmonious fusion of yoga and prayer, led by Jewish Vegan Yogi, Kim Siegel, PMP, E-RYT 500, as we honor the sacred bond between humans and animals in celebration of Passover. In this special gathering, inspired by the ancient Jewish tradition of the blessings of the animals, we invite you to partake in a gentle and inclusive yoga practice suitable for all levels.

Kim is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor with a passion for teaching. Her yoga journey began as a student seeking an alternative way of improving her mental health. The practice became her lifelong medicine. The discovery of the awareness of breath linked with the movement of the body was a truly transformative experience. She was called to share this powerful medicine with others. Kim’s classes are alignment-based and offer variations of postures. Her classes also focus on the connection of the pose with the subtlety of the breath. Her intention is for students to feel the freedom to make an intuitive choice about their practice on the mat. She is also celebrating her 15th Vegan-Versary this May! You can find Kim here: https://www.soaringsiegelyoga.com/

Disclaimer: Shamayim: Jewish Animal Advocacy does not support the consumption of  honey. This is because of the ethical implications. The first issue surrounding honey is the amount of effort it takes bees to produce. Some estimates suggest it takes one bee a whole lifetime to produce just one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey – considering the number of honey products available in any given supermarket, and the drastically declining number of bees worldwide, this seems like an unfair trade.

Beyond the effort it takes, large-scale honey production is usually not done with bees’ interests in mind. Some ethical issues which the Vegan Society identifies include:

  • Clipping the wings of Queen bees to prevent them from leaving a hive and artificially inseminating them
  • Selectively breeding bees to increase productivity, which narrows the gene pool and leaves whole hives susceptible to diseases which they might not have any immunity to
  • Replacing honey made in a hive with a sugar substitute which is not as nutritious for bees to eat
  • Culling whole beehives post-harvest to keep farming costs down

Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Chukat: Orders of Magnitude18 Jun 202100:07:28

A D'var Torah for Parashat Chukat. This week's parsha gives several examples of the relations animals have with humans: purifying them, harming them, killing them, and healing them. But any relationship goes two ways, and the interactions must be considered quantifiably and qualitatively. We weigh humanity's treatment of animals on the scales of justice in this week's dvar Torah.

Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Korach: Sacred Responsibility11 Jun 202100:08:50

A D'var Torah for Parashat Korach. In this week's parsha, a rebellion takes place against Moses and Aaron's leadership. The rebels, lead by Korach, insist that their inherent holiness should keep Moses and Aaron from elevating themselves above them. In our time, the Korachs of the world insist that their inherent freedoms should prevent initiatives the overhaul our food system to a sustainable, plant-based one that will help to mitigate the looming climate catastrophe. The Torah's prioritization of freedom against other values is explored in this dvar Torah.

Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Shelach Lecha: Courage or Curses04 Jun 202100:08:35

A D'var Torah for Parashat Shelach Lecha. In this week’s parsha, Moses sends a group of scouts to observe the Promised Land. Only two of them, Caleb & Joshua, report honestly and optimistically - the others cower in fear. Because of their lack of courage, God dooms the entire generation to die in the wilderness while their children will take their place to enter the Promised Land. In our time, the simple steps we need to make for the sake of the future are responded to with fear - will we suffer the same fate as the Israelites?

Neo-Hasidic Approaches to Animal Welfare - An interview with Rabbi Dr. Ariel Evan Mayse16 Sep 202000:18:20

An interview with Rabbi Dr. Ariel Evan Mayse. Rabbi Mayse is an assistant professor of Religion at Stanford University, and is a leading voice of the Neo-Hasidic movement. We discuss Neo-Hasidism and it's similarities and differences to traditional Hasidism, including it's approaches to Halakha. When limited to the dichotomy of leniency vs stringency, Neo-Hasidism is know for generally lenient views on many matters - but not when it comes to Kashrut and Tsar Baalei Chayim. We discuss Rabbi Mayse's halakhic teachings about animal agriculture and the environment.

Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Shemini: Holy Eating17 Apr 202000:06:11

A D'var Torah for Parashat Shemini. In this week’s parsha, the Torah outlines which animals are permitted and forbidden from being eaten by the Israelites, concluded with a Divine statement that "You shall be holy, for I am holy." We explore that, despite the reluctant permissions of certain animals to be eaten, this holiness descends from what is not eaten, rather than what is.

Plant-Based Torah - Pesach 2020: A Plea from Generation Z07 Apr 202000:07:09

A Dvar Torah for Passover 2020. Passover celebrates liberation from Egypt, understood by the mystical tradition to be a place of narrowness. And yet, in our time, we all face a place of narrowness - the narrow path we all need to walk in order to mitigate the worst consequences of the Climate Crisis.
