This episode is a sequel to episode 30; where we talked about all the erotic themes of Bridgerton. In this part, Lauren and I give our high level reviews and critiques of the third season of the show, highlighting some areas where the portrayal of intimacy could really use some improvement. Lauren gives us an in-depth look at the process of arousal and why we should NEVER be saying phrases such as “it’s gonna hurt.” If you like Bridgerton, and want some shows with a similar vibe, we suggest you check out Reign and Outlander (TWs for assault on both).

| Submission in Partnership, The Bachelor, and Polyamory | 03 Jul 2024 | 00:56:39 | |
In this episode of Sex Ed For You: Where Research Meets Reality, Lauren and I start off by watching a recent reel post by Madion Prewitt, a former contestant on the Bachelor. This video started a conversation on submission within partnership, division of labor in households, and the importance of respecting your partner. We also dive into why the Bachelor/ette dating shows not only don’t work, but also are a horrible representation of polyamory; glorifying an unbalanced model of what can be a really healthy approach to consensual non-monogamy. We touch on the topic of mind-reading in relationships and how it’s important to communicate your needs; not just expect a partner to know them off the bat. Last but not least, we emphasize the importance of NOT putting sex on a pedestal; relationships are so so much more than just a p*nis and a v*gina. | Erotic Themes of Bridgerton | 22 May 2024 | 00:47:36
Y’all, Lauren and I ran to the podcast chairs as soon as Bridgerton Season 3 came out. No S3 spoilers here, but if you haven’t seen S1 & S2 then you should probably watch those first. ;) This conversation was all about the erotic themes of the Bridgerton love stories we’ve seen so far: Daphne + Simon, Anthony + Kate, and the long awaited Pen + Colin. Lauren and I talk through our own favorite scenes from the show and which erotic themes are most common. We touch on the topic of sexualization and how sex is used to manipulate in control in the show. Lauren brings up Julia Quinn’s background and how her dynamic with romance books deeply influences the Bridgerton story. Last but not least, we talk through implementing core erotic themes into real life in healthy ways! Love always, H!

| The Intersection of Religion & Sexuality | 04 Dec 2024 | 00:48:56 | |
In this episode, we discuss the all too often overlooked intersection of religion, specifically Christianity, and sexuality. Because our primary clientele are folks who have some sort of history with religion, we find it deeply important to cover this topic with nuance and care. We dive into Rev. Bev’s "Sex Is Good!" series and tackle questions such as: Who does my body belong to? What is safety-seeking behavior? What is embedded theology? And how to navigate working with educators who hold different belief systems from their clients?
| Conversations About Consent | 24 Apr 2024 | 00:58:52 | |
This episode starts off with our quick anecdote to one of our listeners who said they don’t like our new intro: WE SEE YOU, truly! & say, pls feel free to skip it! This sets up the most amazing conversation about consent. I (Holland) found a Reddit post the other day written by a father about his daughter disclosing her discomfort around an adult in her life. This conversation is nuanced in so many ways and opens up the floor for Lauren and I to talk about the fact that abuse does not have just one face. We talk about signs of abuse and quite a few preventative measures you can take to help keep your kids safe! We may be beating a dead horse with a stick on this one, but AGAIN, conversations and communication can save lives. Lauren gives a few examples of how she’s created a safe container for her kid to come to her with vulnerable topics, conversations you can have about consent, and a game you can play with kids to model consent. We open up the conversations to other consent related topics like the Me Too movement and Dr. Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent. Hope you all enjoy! | Learning the Art of Choice | 17 Apr 2024 | 00:55:17
This episode is about the importance of learning the art of choice. We sat down for this episode with no particular topic in mind and out came this conversation about how the lack of autonomy and choice making skills in adolescence deeply affect your ability to choose later in life. We empower listeners (and ourselves) to make cognizant decisions about who we surround ourselves with and to critically examine how those people impact our perspectives on life. The entire conversation highly relates to Dr. Betty Martin’s Wheel of Consent and her book The Art of Receiving and Giving.

| Navigating Fantasy | 10 Apr 2024 | 01:01:41 | |
In this episode, we draw parallels between the iconic One Tree Hill marriage and the intricacies of harmful sexual behaviors, shedding light on hidden misogyny within anti-porn rhetoric. We confront the phenomenon of women pitted against women and the all-too-common expectation of male "failure" when it comes to porn, while honoring the harm that trust and deceit play in this conversation. We discuss the importance of compassionately loving ourselves to heal past traumas by exploring the cornerstones of eroticism which help to integrate adrenaline, fantasy, and pleasure into our healing journey. I lament about the societal destruction of creativity and play-pretend in adulthood, advocating for relearning fantasy and embracing creativity. Lauren and I also tackle the taboo topic of communicating with partners about pornography, and emphasize the importance of recognizing the intricate production behind pornographic content. Join us as we navigate these complex issues with empathy, insight, and a commitment to understanding and growth. Love always, H. | The Chaos of Reality | 20 Mar 2024 | 01:06:08
This episode is truly all over the place. We start off with a bang, talking about my most recent experience with my queerness and exploring what it means to me, and why labels feel relatively daunting. Then, we talk about Jennifer Aniston’s scene from “He’s Just Not That Into You,” where the person she’s been partnered with for years refuses to marry her, and we dive into all the facets of life that are quite literally just made up by humans– the government, money, and time. We talk about the nuances of these institutions and how they affect our lives. As both Lauren and I just finished watching our favorite reality TV love shows, Couple to Throuple and Love is Blind, respectively, we touch on the power of knowledge and permission (also, did you know Lauren was on a reality TV show??). Then, at the end of the episode, I tacked on a short 15 minute clip that we filmed last week after a chaotic day of filming. Love always!!! H Resources:

| The Bisexual Agenda | 21 Feb 2024 | 00:47:35 | |
Lauren and I talk a little bit about what bisexuality looks like on a deeper level than is typically spoken about in day to day conversations. I give my own perspectives and lived experiences of bisexuality, coming out, and the lifelong journey of learning that I’ve come to appreciate. We bring up a few really interesting topics; like the fact that the LGBTQIA+ community is, at its core, a system and what that means for queer folk as we pave the way for generations to come. This conversation is so fun and interesting, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg; so we encourage you to do your own research, find sources that feel good to you and immerse yourself in supportive and loving communities and conversations. | Stop the Stigma | 20 Dec 2023 | 00:59:15
In this episode, I open up about my journey with STIs and how being tested after a sexual assault encounter was a crucial turning point for me. I share my experience with testing and treatment, highlighting the importance of sexual health. This topic is difficult, but so so important for anyone who is sexually active. I hope you see a new perspective on STIs after listening along to this episode. Lauren and I have an eye-opening discussion comparing STIs to something we're more familiar with, like strep throat. We break down the truth that the danger of STIs lies in leaving infections untreated. We also shine a light on what treatment looks like – from antibiotic pills to shots – shedding light on the straightforward but vital process. Speaking from my own experience with treatment and testing, I emphasize the importance of being proactive about your sexual health. We dive into the responsibility we have in notifying our sexual partners if we receive a positive test result. Communication is key, and it's a crucial part of safeguarding everyone's well-being. Sex Ed For You isn't just about information – it's about empowerment. Lauren and I infuse this discussion with real experiences, laughter, and most importantly, a supportive atmosphere. We're here to dismantle stigma, educate, and encourage everyone to take charge of their sexual health with confidence. For those who are curious, the testing ended up costing $45 at my local health department & they gave me tons of free, non-latex condoms! ;) Love, Holland Resources:

| Lines in the Sand | 13 Dec 2023 | 00:47:14 | |
This is a tender episode that Lauren and I made in response to an anonymous question we received the week prior. This brave person reached out to us asking for advice about their decision to have first intercourse within their current relationship. The original anonymous question is read aloud for the audience, but the additional context provided by our brave friend is kept out of the episode. We first build a container that we feel lays the foundation of the following conversation: our backgrounds, our perspectives, and our shortcomings– i.e. we haven’t met this person, and only know a few details of the situation. From there, Lauren and I give our own stories relating to first intercourse and we try to give our friend tools they can use to analyze their own situation from a sex-positive, consent based perspective. We also follow the situation through – if this disagreement about intercourse ended in a breakup; what would that look like? We discuss what our friend can do to support themselves in a way that honors the bravery of their decision to stand on their values, yet also acknowledges the pain of a breakup. Episode 10 is heartfelt, tender, and real. Thank you for trusting us with your question, friend. You are so worthy, so loved, so kind. Click here for our sexual values worksheet. | F*ck the Myths | 22 Nov 2023 | 00:49:05
In this episode, Lauren and Holland delve into the biopsychosocial approach that defines our work. Our conversation centers on the often-overlooked nuances of addressing issues like vaginismus, dyspareunia, and various vulva-related concerns. We explore the unfortunate tendency to label these conditions without engaging in meaningful discussions with patients, highlighting the need for a more holistic understanding. The episode delves into empowering practices that individuals can adopt at home to holistically confront these challenges, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a positive relationship with one's own vulva. Lauren and Holland discuss the pervasive shame associated with vulvas, shedding light on society's limited exposure to unaltered representations of their beauty. We underscore the pivotal role this plays in reshaping the narrative surrounding women's bodies, promoting a perspective that recognizes them as resilient, stunning, and deserving of adoration. Adding a unique dimension to the conversation, Holland shares her insights on distinguishing between phallic and non-phallic love scenes, offering a thought-provoking exploration of intimacy. | Values, Vulvas, & OhNuts, Oh My! | 08 Nov 2023 | 01:02:11
Welcome to SEX ED FOR YOU with Lauren & Holland: Where Research Meets Reality! In episode 5, Lauren & Holland quickly discuss what it looks like to do power differently and allow the mess of humanity. In a world where everyone is on social media and our lives are so public, we encourage ourselves and others to remain authentic. This leads us to talk about the importance of establishing sexual values and what we think is influencing Holland’s generation (Zillenials) and those younger than she. The anatomy and physiology of vulvas is an important topic we feel isn’t often discussed, so we talk about what arousal looks like, why penetrative intercourse can be painful, and our own experiences with pelvic floor issues. Lauren offers positions to try that can help reduce and avoid pain. Finally, Lauren regales us with her story of the missing OhNut, which will leave you in tears of laughter. Resources:
