A kids book about neurodiversity (Author’s notes version)26 Aug 202400:22:20

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Listen in to this episode to hear more context and insight behind some of the wording and passages I used in my book, A kids book about neurodiversity. You might be surprised to learn that this book’s intended audience is actually neurotypical kids, because I want to spread awareness and acceptance and celebration for our neurodivergent kids; it shouldn’t always be left up to us neurodivergent folks and families to constantly explain ourselves and our kids’ behaviors and needs to the world; what if we lived in a world where everyone just knew that there are variations among humans?

Why your child is a picky eater, and when to seek help.18 Apr 202200:26:36

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Happy OT month! In the U.S.,  we are celebrating the field of Occupational Therapy in April, and I’m celebrating it by spreading awareness about all the wonderful ways OT can help people be successful in their everyday lives. I recently did an episode on handwriting, which was episode 29. Today we are talking about picky eating, a topic that MANY parents face at one point in their parenting journey.

Some parents’ journey with their child’s picky eating is a little more severe than others, and we’re going to cover it all today. We’ll talk about the skills that are required for eating, how sensory processing is related to eating, how OT helps picky eating, and lastly when it’s time to seek support from an OT.

Development of handwriting skills and when to Seek OT Support11 Apr 202200:27:10

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Did you know that handwriting development depends on a solid foundation of sensory processing skills? Really, all of our motor output (both gross and fine motor) become refined and developed after sensory skills have been established. So, it’s pretty common for some kids with handwriting challenges to have underlying sensory processing issues. In this episode, we’ll talk about: common handwriting development struggles, when it’s time to seek OT support for handwriting challenges, and how OT can help with handwriting challenges.

The ABA Therapy Controversy28 Feb 202200:33:17

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

As an Occupational Therapist, I get asked all the time what my thoughts are on ABA, and if I think ABA is harmful. Keep reading to learn more about an OT’s perspective on ABA therapy, some alternatives to ABA therapy, and how to ensure your Autistic child can thrive even if they are in ABA therapy.

ABA (Applied behavioral analysis) therapy is a type of intervention where people are trained in behavioral analysis and use that lens to manipulate (either increase a certain behavior or reduce another behavior) behaviors in children, it’s most often used and associated with Autistic children.

I’ll be talking about my thoughts on ABA as an intervention for Autistic children, and discuss the practices that have made ABA seem harmful to the Autistic community.

Making the most out of OT services14 Feb 202200:40:37

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Making the most out of your child’s OT services (that you had to fight tooth and nail for, go down very deep internet rabbit holes and stalk the local mom group just to find) is important, but how? In this episode, I’ll be answering common questions I get from parents, like what to do if your child isn’t making progress, how you can ask your OT to support you in non-traditional ways, when it might be time to take a break or pause from OT, and even some signs that you may need to switch therapists.

How to have the “sensory cup” talk24 Jan 202200:32:04

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

One thing I’m always preaching to my clients, my in person clients, my virtual parent coaching clients and the parents in the Sensory WISE Solutions program is that it’s important to have the “sensory cup” talk with your child. You know, as long as they have the language capabilities to understand. It’s important for your child to understand that their brain processes sensory input differently and it’s even more important for them to understand that there’s nothing wrong with that. Listen to this episode to see how I talk about it with my 4 year old.

Your Body, Your Rules: Masturbation, Orgasms & intimacy with Dr. Tracy Dalgleish10 Jun 202400:32:07

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

It’s 2024, self-pleasure, masturbation, orgasms…. It’s one of the most natural, fun, immediate ways to regulate our bodies, why should we be ashamed of it? Listen in to this unfiltered discussion about changes to intimacy after becoming parents and how burnt out, touched out moms can start getting bringing sexy back!

Dr. Tracy Dalgleish helps empower women and couples to improve their communication and build strong and healthy connections with themselves and their partner through therapy, wellness seminars, and her work outside of the therapy room. She contributes to popular media sites, including Motherly, Huffington Post, and Bustle. In addition to hosting the podcast, “I’m not your shrink” where she dives deeper into clinical knowledge and research in a relatable and informal way, her book “I Didn’t Sign Up For This: Stories of Unlocking Old Patterns and Finding Joy in Your Relationship” is a fantastic resource, which I highly recommend. Dr. Tracy is a mom of two young children and owner of Ottawa’s mental health clinic, Integrated Wellness, she knows what it means to balance the full load.

Is it sensory or is it behavior?17 Jan 202200:21:40

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

All behavior is a form of communication, but sometimes it can be hard to decipher what our children are communicating. When kids hit, kick, spit, punch, throw or push, parents often ask me, “is this sensory or is it behavior?”

I’m here to end that debate once and for all. Well, maybe not end it, but at least help you reframe it.

Because what the real question should be is “What is it my child is trying to communicate with me right now?”

Listen to this episode to hear more about the sensory and behavior link.

Accommodation vs. Exposure for Sensory Kids10 Jan 202200:21:27

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

So you have a sensory sensitive child who’s sensitive to seams of socks, mushy textured food, messy play, or toilets flushing. What should you do?

Do you accommodate every environment and task for them so they can avoid the sensory triggers altogether?

Does that make them spoiled?

Should you force them to get used to it?

Where do you draw the line?

Listen to this episode to find out how I talk about accommodating vs. exposure.

The 2022 Mindset for Parents of Neurodivergent Kids03 Jan 202200:20:13

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

It’s so amazing how much a shift in mindset can positively impact progress in your own parenting journey as well as your neurodivergent child’s journey. Sometimes we can feel like we’re stuck, not making progress and we try to find all the right solutions and tricks and hacks, but what we need most is a mindset shift, or at least a mindset re-set.

Mixed Sensory Thresholds27 Dec 202100:20:39

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

One of the most common questions I get asked about is if children can have mixed thresholds, meaning seek some sensory input and be sensitive to others.

The answer is yes! A child can have a whole grab-bag of surprises when it comes to sensory profiles and sensory processing challenges.

Motherhood: Unscripted20 Dec 202100:39:05

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

My whole experience of motherhood has been completely different than what I had envisioned, and that’s okay, but it needs to be talked about.

I don’t love this version of motherhood. I’m not enjoying the role I play as Mom.

 I miss the old me.

Raising a neurodivergent child is hard.

So many thoughts are unraveled in this episode, and I share a lot of vulnerable thoughts and feelings about motherhood, in an unscripted way.

I also share a lot of confessions and frustrations that other moms have shared with me.

Tips for Building Self Regulation Skills13 Dec 202100:23:18

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Co-regulation is something that will always be part of us as human beings. We are social beings and need the interaction, social transaction and intimacy and trust with another human being.

But we can’t always rely on others to regulate ourselves, and we do want the ultimate goal for our children to be some version of self-regulation. I want to share with you what you can do now to build towards self regulation.

Going through a rough patch15 Nov 202100:34:59

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

The truth is, I'm an expert in sensory and child development. I do all the things. I practice gentle parenting when I can.

Even with all that I give and all that I know, I still struggle very much with raising my anxious and sensory sensitive daughter. Right now she's going through a rough patch, which means we all are going through a rough patch in our house.

This episode is completely unscripted but was so therapeutic for me to just talk and vent it all out. I'll talk about why it's so hard to keep up with her regulation, what's going on with her at school, and even touch on our tough decision of not having any more children.

This isn't your typical educational insights episode, but still valuable if you want to feel less alone.

THC, CBD and Neurodiversity, with Dr. Miyabe Shields Ph.D.03 Jun 202400:57:14

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Dr. Miyabe Shields, is a Ph.D. pharmaceutical scientist who specialized in the structural biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system for drug discovery. They have received national and international recognition for their pre-doctoral research in the endocannabinoid system and industrial accomplishments in the cannabis and emerging psychedelics industries.

After co-founding a cannabis research startup post-PhD, they delved into rare extract and formulation research, exploring heat-transformed cannabinoids and developed a novel form of cannabis extraction. Miyabe transitioned to community education and science advocacy through social media and podcasts, reaching over 6 million people.

Shifting away from production-focused roles, they now advocate for the therapeutic benefits of cannabis and psychedelics for neurodivergent brains. They co-founded the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (NAP), a new research non-profit, to disseminate real-world applications of the synergies of nature by analyzing data and communicating research and educational information to the public.

In this episode, we’ll talk all about the difference between ways to take in cannabis, the different ingredients, and how this can be helpful (or harmful) to various neurotypes. Again, please keep in mind- this is not medical advice. This is just a discussion between 2 neurodivergent adults who happen to use cannabis as a tool in our regulation toolbox, sharing our lived experience and clinical research.

High Threshold: Sensory Seekers vs. Low Registration18 Oct 202100:13:19

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Sensory seekers tend to under-respond to sensory input, but the way a sensory seeker behaves and acts looks different than a child who has low registration that also under-responds to sensory input. This episode compares and contrasts the 2 profiles.

Why are restaurants so hard for my neurodivergent child and how can I help them?27 May 202400:23:39

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Restaurants are a multi-sensory experience, and if you've got a neurodivergent child, you know that multi-sensory doesn't always necessarily mean a good thing. Between the sensory overload, confined space and social expectations of "behaving" in a restaurant, it makes sense why eating out as a family feels stressful for some families. Today I'll peel back the layers and talk about the specific triggers that are contributing to dysregulation, and give strategies to best support your children.  Plus hacks for keeping busy at the table.

And I'll share a real example from my own parenting journey - what happened when I tried validating my daughter's perspective and attacking the problem objectively (minimizing emotions) to find a creative solution that she could agree to? Collaborative problem solving has really shifted our dynamic from a battle of wills to a feeling of partnership.

The Nervous System Budget: a new way to think about accommodations for neurodivergent individuals11 Mar 202400:15:08

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

I wanted to share a new concept I've been thinking about called the "nervous system budget." Basically, it's a way to visualize how different tasks and environments affect our nervous systems. I'll explain how we all have a limited amount of "nervous system cash" each day, and how certain things can cost more than others.

I'll also give some ideas for how parents can help kids spend less and save more for the things that really matter. My hope is that framing it this way can help parents be more intentional about supporting their kids' regulation.

Journey from Referral to Recommendations: what to expect (Tips from a Clinical Psychologist)04 Mar 202400:44:18

Dr. Alex Reed is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the assessment and support of neurodevelopmental diagnoses across the lifespan

Alex and I are both contributors in Dr. Becky’s goodinside community- a movement and platform that we really enjoy supporting. Alex and I have so many sideline conversations about neurodiversity and are constantly sharing resources and posts that speak to our souls— they usually have to do with finding ND affirming care. So I invited Alex on today because she does most of her work within the more traditional DSM-medical model, so she can give us more insight into that lens… but more specifically, I invited her on because she and I have both been hearing about how many parents leave this process-their evaluation, their diagnosis with a referral to therapies they aren’t sure about, or they leave with more questions, or they leave feeling icky.

I’m hoping Alex can peel back some of those layers for us today so we can understand a bit more about the process and the quote unquote system– and more importantly, what’s within our control as parents if we can ONLY access those services through “the system”- what are our options to help our neurodivergent kids thrive as they are?
