| Bikepacking Turkey with Two Toddlers: Vanessa Ruck + Your Worst Mechanicals | 27 Oct 2026 | 00:25:46 | |
Vanessa Ruck and her best friend Tori have taken their e-bikes and two toddlers to Turkey, with 25 days to see how far they can ride and around 21,000 metres of climbing on the route.
I also asked you to share out your worst mechanicals. I put the question out on Instagram after Rob Maclennan’s episode, and you sent through some cracking ones, like brakes giving out on Bolivia’s Death Road and a frame welded back together on a Friday night in Canadian bear country. Lastly, a reminder Episode 200 is out on Saturday 31st October. I’m also putting together a separate episode where someone else interviews me, so if you’ve got a question about the podcast or my own rides, send it through using the contact link below or DM me on Instagram at @seektravelride. | Bikepacking 13,000kms Around Australia Solo: Louann Perriere | 24 Oct 2026 | 00:59:48
Louann Perriere arrived in Australia with the idea she'd get a bike and use it to get to work. Instead she ended up on a huge adventure, circumnavigating the entire country. What makes this even more impressive is she had never done anything like this before. People warned her that crossing the Nullabor in summer would be too hot, so instead she waited for autumn and was surprised by just how cold things would get. She also survived one of the most intense lightning storms, stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Some of the highlights came with being in those big open spaces, such as when she was riding across the Barkly Tableland, and a place that stole her heart was Broome. When she had setbacks like equipment failures, she quickly learnt to trust the road and that there would always be a solution. She loved how travelling solo in this manner across Australia also sparked countless conversations from curious strangers, and the kindness they showed towareds her. Like many other long distance travellers Louann also shares how she enjoys the solitude that comes with taking these kind of adventures on your own. Her advice to people thinking of doing something similar is to not listen to the fears others may put on your shoulders when you tell them your plans. It's not as scary as you think out there. Give it a go, and you can work things out as you travel. | Bike Touring With No Experience: Learning As You Go | 20 Oct 2026 | 00:28:34
How much do you need to know before you set off on a bike adventure? Going back through nearly 200 episodes of Seek Travel Ride, I found the answer from guests is usually a lot less than people expect. For this midweek episode I’ve pulled clips from eight guests who started out with very little idea of what they were doing. Florence Cotel taught herself to ride a bike at night in Copenhagen so nobody would see her wobbling, and went on to ride from North to South America. Paul de Tilly’s only training for his ride from Paris to China was two kilometres around the Luxembourg Gardens near his house. In the second half you’ll hear how guests like Rebecca Lowe, and Samer Abouhamad share how breaking down their big journeys into smaller pieces helped them believe they could make it happen. If you’re planning your first bike tour or bikepacking trip, I hope this gives you the push to start small and work the rest out on the road. Listen to the full episodes

| Bikepacking Central Asia Then Racing Silk Road Mountain Race: Rob Maclennan | 17 Oct 2026 | 01:38:46 | |
Six days into a two-month ride across Central Asia, Rob MacLennan found himself driving a minibus over the mountains in Mongolia. His broken bike was strapped to the roof, there were twelve local women in the back, and the driver was having a nap in the passenger seat. It turned out to be a fair warning of what was coming. Rob first joined me on the show after riding from London to Cape Town. This time he’s back after bikepacking the ancient Silk Road through Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, using the whole trip as training for the Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan. He was sitting inside the top 15 when his cranks snapped deep in the mountains. Most riders would have scratched, and as Rob says himself, there’s no shame in that. He went the other way. He rode 50 kilometres with one pedal, found a rental bike that was far too small for him, went hunting through a scrapyard for a taller saddle, and spent around €800 on taxis bringing parts out from a bike shop in Bishkek. All the while he was racing the snail to make each checkpoint cutoff. We also talk about the numbness he felt after the race, which left his memories of the trip feeling like he was watching them in the third person. | Bikepacking Wildlife Encounters | 13 Oct 2026 | 00:22:12
This week’s episode has a Eurasian lynx attacking a cycle tourist through his tent wall and three lions calling to each other around a wild camp in Tanzania, so yeah, it’s a wildlife one. It all started with an email from a previous guest, Robert Reynolds, where he shared a frightening experience when a Eurasian lynx tried to attack him in the night while he was inside his tent! It sent me back through the archives to my chat with Steph Devery, a kick-ass Aussie whose bike adventure took her right across Europe and down through Africa. Steph tells the story of sitting in the far corner of a campground in Uganda when a whole family of gorillas climbed into the trees right in front of her. She followed that up when she recalled a night wild camping in Tanzania when she woke at 3am to lions on every side of her tent, with a couple of millimetres of nylon between her and them. I also put the call out on Instagram for your own wildlife stories from the bike, and you came through. I share a few of mine as well, like riding over snakes on the bike paths in Canberra and a sleepless night of cowbells outside a shepherd’s hut in the Pyrenees. Then there’s the mule at the top of the Col du Soulor that nibbled my handlebars and disconnected my brakes right before the descent. Episode 200 of Seek Travel Ride is coming up in a few weeks, and a few of you have asked if someone could turn the tables and interview me. If you’ve got a question you’d like me to answer, tap the “Send a message or voice note to the show” link in these show notes. You can use the same link to send me your own bike travel stories, and I’ll read them out in future episodes. | Bikepacking Seven Countries in Asia with Shuhena Islam. | 10 Oct 2026 | 01:20:14
Shuhena only learnt how to ride a bike as an adult and she's been rediscovering what is possible for her ever since. She shares how she always viewed bikepacking as a 'white persons sport' and also how she hopes more muslim women will take to doing what she has done. Shuhena walked away from a corporate law career in London, bought herself a one way ticket to Asia and went bikepacking. She ended up cycling through seven countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia. We talk visas (the Chinese one took a month), gear, and how cycling the mountainous roads in Java, Indonesia left her completely broken. She also shares how she has found community on the road, and the realities of what it is like to go cycling through Asia as a Muslim woman. | What's It Like to Cycle in Indonesia and Ride to Mount Bromo? | Olly Hargreaves | 06 Oct 2026 | 00:29:05
What's it like to go bikepacking in Indonesia? Olly Hargreaves has sent through his last update all about cycling from Jakarta to Balin starting with a 38 hour ferry ride from Singapore! Olly reckons Java has the steepest roads of his whole ride, steeper than the Alps, Afghanistan or the Pamir Highway, with gradients up to 30% and descents where your fingers never leave the brakes. He also explains why he skipped the busy north coast road and the brutal southern route other bikepackers took, instead choosing to go through the middle of the island via Bandung, Borobudur, Yogyakarta and Malang instead. Then comes the climb to Mount Bromo, where his brother Jamie told him there was no way he'd ride the whole thing, and you can probably guess how that went. They cycled through the sand of the Bromo crater and watched Mount Semeru send up a cloud of ash every 20 minutes. After that came a night hike to the blue fire and sulphur mines of Mount Ijen, the ferry to Bali, and one last steep valley before they flew on to Australia. If you're planning a cycling trip in Indonesia, Olly's advice is to be ready for the hills and make time for the volcanoes. | TransAmerica Trail Angel Wes Murray: Hosting Nearly 300 Cyclists in Missouri | 03 Oct 2026 | 01:23:26
Wes Murray has been hosting cyclists on the TransAmerica Trail since 2012 at his home in Houston, Missouri. Since then he's hosted over 300 bike adventurers who have stayed at 'The Shack'. His hospitality and kindness is legendary and now many riders have 'staying with Wes' as a milestone when they plan their ride across the USA. It's a pleasure to chat with Wes and hear how it is he and his late wife Judy got into hosting cyclists in the first place, and hear him share his experiences from doing so. Wes definitely feels hosting cyclists is a gift for himself as well and he enjoys broadening his view of the world by listening to the stories of touring cyclists and bikepackers he hosts. In turn, they learn more about Houston, Missouri and often get to meet locals while trying out frozen custard from the Corner Store or departing with the hospital breakfast. Never Miss an Opportunity is the phrase that Wes imparts on those who stay with him on their ride, and it's a privilege to have had the opportunity to share the other side of the hosting experience. | Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway: Bikepacking Tips from Saorsie Pottie | 29 Sep 2026 | 00:25:16
Going on a bike adventure can be a huge deal and perhaps you've found that fear is holding you back from going out there and exploring. This week I'm sharing excerpts from my original interview with Saoirse Pottie, which give insight into how she pushed her fears (and those others had for her!) aside and how she did this one small step at a time. Firstly with getting used to riding alone, then wildcamping solo, to taking a journey that would last weeks before going ahead and spending months cycling through Africa. | I Do It to Feel Normal. Long Distance Cycling and Beating Cancer with Ash Eagles | 26 Sep 2026 | 01:31:18
This year Ash Eagles won the 1700km TransAtlantic Way which was his first ever ultracycling event. What makes this even more incredible is that it came almost 5 years after surviving a very rare form of bone cancer where doctors warned him he may never ride his bike again. The day after going through the operation, Ash promised himself that he'd cycle 100kms within a year and it's incredible to learn more about his story and see exactly what he has achieved on the bike since. This includes cycling 4,300miles across the USA on the TransAmerica Trail, then cycling LEJOG a route he'd dreamt of doing for 20 years, albeit Ash thought he'd be hiking it! LEJOG was the tester to see if an ultra like the TransAtlantic Way in Ireland could be possible. The results certainly speak for themselves, with Ash ending up first place finisher for the 1700km category at this years race. | From Bikepacking to Racing Ultras With Poli Berber | 19 Sep 2026 | 01:39:55
Poli Berber started out being fearful of riding her bike in traffic. Then she went on a 10 month tour from Paris to Yereven which ended up being life changing. She returned back to Mexico City and through bikepacking rediscovered her own city. Since then she's taken to mapping out off-road routes around Mexico as well as lining up for ultra racing events, such as Tour de Frankie and the Japanese Odyssey. We talk about how she managed to overcome her fears and what it's like to look at a map and transform it into a bikepacking route others will enjoy. | The Single Best Moment From a Bikepacking Adventure | 15 Sep 2026 | 00:20:39
If you could relive one moment from your bike adventure what would it be? Earlier this year I hosted a series of live shows in Melbourne featuring previous podcast guests Fergal Guihen, Em Hulbert and David McCourt. This exact question was posed during one of those Melbourne Live shows and the answers were so good I'm sharing it with you today. Fergal takes us into the Taklimakan Desert in China, stranded with no food or water until a local guide turned up out of nowhere on a tiny bike. Em goes right back to the very first pedal stroke of her trip, heading up the coast out of Margaret River. David remembers a night in Malaysia, being chased by a storm in an area inhabited by wild elephants and I couldn't resist sneaking my own moment in too which will transport you to the Ireland at the Cliffs of Moher at sunrise. Plus, in this week's listener shoutouts, Anthony shares his own wild camping story from the Goulburn River in Victoria involving a very determined possum! | Solo Cycling 12,000km From Poland to Vietnam (and Back) Oktawia Van Tienderen | 12 Sep 2026 | 01:20:27
Imagine a bike adventure that takes you from Europe SE Asia and back again. Now imagine doing it solo. That is exactly what Oktawia Van Tienderen did and in this episode she is sharing her experiences of taking a journey on like this as a solo woman. Oktawia's original plan was to set off from Poland and continue travelling East. Then she realised that would entail enduring temps of minus 30C by the time she reached Kazakhstan so a change was needed. Instead she got a ticket to Hanoi in Vietnam and the began travelling back to Europe. Oktawia's prefaced taking smaller roads through quiet areas, and prioritised travelling slowly in order to connect more deeply with the locals she would meet along the way. She also says that traveling solo allows you to embrace solitude - even when riding on routes such as the Pamir Highway. | TransAmerica Trail Angel: Your Stories About the Legend | 08 Sep 2026 | 00:11:10

| Cycling the TransAmerica Trail: 4,000-Mile Ride Across the USA with Becky Gilbert | 29 Aug 2026 | 01:21:41 | |
Becky Gilbert shares what it was like to cycle from Oregon to Virginia on the TransAmerica Trail. She undertook this adventure with her partner and Ash and all up spent three months cycling coast to coast across the USA. This was the first long distance bike adventure Becky had undertaken and she admits that she had doubts about being able to complete the journey right from day one. In fact it wasn't until she was two months into the trip that she let herself believe she'd get to the finish! What made this journey that bit extra special was that Becky's Grandparents had themselves cycled the TransAmerica Trail almost 30 years earlier. For Becky she was out there pedalling the same route and reconnecting to storieds she'd been told about for so long. One of the highlights was the conversations had with countless strangers all along the way, including Trail Angel Wes from Missouri, who is renowned for hosting numerous people who are cycling the TransAmerica Trail as they pass through his town. | Solo Bikepacking the Nordics: Finland, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands with Marcello Pacifici | 22 Aug 2026 | 01:23:13
Guest Marcello Pacifici shares his experiences of bikepacking in some of the most isolated places in the Nordics. Originally from Rome in Italy, Marcello now calls Helsinki home. He got into riding bikes as a cheap way to get around the city, then expanded that to bikepacking as a way to discover Finland. His first bikepackign trip was 800kms and would take him all the way to Finnish Lapland. He's since taken many other adventures including time spent on the Arctic Post Road as well as three weeks spent riding in Iceland. When snow blocked the roads on the Iceland Divide Route, Marcello changed his plans and cycled the Westfjords Way. More recently he has just completed a solo journey on teh Faroe Islands. | Blending Ultra Racing with Bikepacking: Hannah Simon | 15 Aug 2026 | 01:39:30
Hannah Simon has raced ultras in four different continents, but you'd be wrong to assume she is only focused on racing. She also enjoys strapping gear on her bike and riding through new landscapes. This year she chose to combine them all by riding to the start line of three seperate events across Europe. I enjoyed exploring her experience as a photo journalist and how she blends her desire to see the landscapes with the competitiveness it takes to race through them as well. Her racing pedigree speaks for itself, she has successfully completed the Triple Crown (Arizona Trail, Tour Divide and Colorado Trail) as well as the Triple Nelson (all three mountain races, Atlas, Silk Road and Hellenic). In 2024 she finished as first woman across the line at the Silk Road Mountain Race, which required her to ride on a pedal spindle for over 400kms due to a mechanical. But did you know she only learnt how to ride a bike so that she would be able to go horse riding? That her favourite riding food is humous from Lidl and that she enjoyed being humbled by the weather and terrain in Scotland's highlands during the Highland Trail 550? | Bikepacking from Alaska to New York: Jimmy Vervoort | 08 Aug 2026 | 01:25:52
Belgium bikepacker Jimmy Vervoort shares his awesome journey riding from Alaska to New York City. This was a trip split into two parts with the first starting in the middle of winter which made for some very cold riding days in Alaska. One of the golden rules of bike travel is being adaptable, so Jimmy changed up his route, flew to Vancouver and then cycled south down the Pacific Coast trail. When he ran out of funds he flew back to Belgium worked and saved up to restart the journey this time in Louisiana. Eventually he'd ride all the way to New York incorporating sections of the Arizona Trail and Colorado Trail, where he admits there is some 'unfinished business' to take on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in the future. | Bike Touring the World with Marielle Jauring (re-visited) | 25 Jul 2026 | 01:37:52
Marielle Jauring has ridden roughly 89,000 kilometres across the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe and Asia since her first tour in 2017. This interview was recorded midway through her current ride from Poland to Sri Lanka. The conversation ranges from lighter moments (a turtle sanctuary in Malaysia, blue lava in Indonesia, petting a bear in Canada that turned out to be drunk, not dead) to genuinely hairy ones (heatstroke in the Australian outback, a car accident with her sister, and getting stranded cashless at the Russia–Kazakhstan border before hitchhiking 750 km back into Georgia with two truck drivers). Marielle also opens up about grief, and how cycling has become a form of meditation for her. What's the best country to take a bike adventure? I put that question to the Seek Travel Ride Instagram community, and the answers poured in, from expected favourites to a few genuine curveballs. This episode is dedicated to running through every single one. It comes on the back of a scorching European summer and a roadside afternoon spectating the Tour de France, which got me reflecting on how the race first brought me to France and ultimately to the Pyrenees back in 2013, where I now live. Countries featured in this episode:

Rob MacLennan is back on the pod, this time mid-adventure sharing updates as he bikepacks from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to the start line of the Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan. We learn about how Rob has transitioned from long-distance touring (London to Cape Town) to getting into the world of ultra-cycling and how he ended up signing up to one of the hardest off road ultras out there in the SRMR! He also tells us why he is now out there combining both disciplines on this trip, and what it's actually been like riding through Mongolia's empty grasslands, staying in gers with hospitable nomadic families. | A Month Spent Cycling Around Ireland: Brian Sampson | 23 Jun 2026 | 00:26:59
We are going to hear what it's like to spend a month cycling in Ireland thanks to the latest update from Brian Sampson who just completed a 1500km loop around Dublin and Belfast that proved tougher, more beautiful, and far more rewarding than expected. After cycling through England and Wales, Brian discovered Ireland's slower pace, where he enjoyed cycling on empty farm roads. The standout moment was a hike to Comshagan Lough, a glacial crater lake. He skipped the touristy Dingle Peninsula due to the busy traffic and 40mph wind gusts, opting instead for the quieter Sheepshead Peninsula. Key takeaways: the Irish hospitality is peak (work crews offering shelter, locals offering directions), the scenery rivals NZ and Tasmania, and yes, the weather will get you wet every morning. Cycling in Ireland may not be easy, but it absolutely is worth it.
