Ben Geen: The Killer Nurse — Revisited

In 2006, nurse Ben Geen was convicted of murdering two patients and seriously harming 15 others while working at Horton General Hospital in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Prosecutors said Geen deliberately injected patients with potentially lethal drugs before reveling in the medical emergencies that followed. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum of 30 years.

Geen has always maintained his innocence.

This week, Seeing Red revisits one of the most fascinating and unsettling medical murder cases we've covered.

Before the original episode begins, Mark returns with a new 10–15 minute update.

With the Lucy Letby case continuing to dominate headlines and raise difficult questions about how suspected medical murders are identified and investigated, Mark looks again at the evidence against Geen — and asks whether his conviction still feels as compelling as it once did.

He also explores the striking parallels between Geen and Letby; why hospital managers can appear reluctant to involve the police even when staff suspect a colleague may be harming patients; the extraordinary coincidence involving Geen and an actress playing a killer nurse in Holby City; and whether Mark's growing doubts about the Letby convictions have made him question Ben Geen's guilt too.

Plus, an unfortunate encounter between a syringe and Geen's jacket prompts Mark to revisit some highly questionable medical terminology from the original episode.

Colin Norris: The Killer Nurse — Revisited

In 2008, nurse Colin Norris was convicted of murdering four elderly patients and attempting to murder another at two hospitals in Leeds. Prosecutors said Norris deliberately injected vulnerable women with insulin, causing sudden and unexplained episodes of severe hypoglycaemia. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years.

Norris has always maintained his innocence.

This week, Seeing Red revisits one of Britain's most disturbing — and increasingly controversial — medical murder cases.

The Summerland Disaster: The Isle of Man Fire That Killed 50

On 2 August 1973, thousands of holidaymakers were enjoying an evening at Summerland, a vast state-of-the-art leisure complex on the seafront in Douglas, Isle of Man. Within minutes, it had become the scene of one of the deadliest fires in modern British history.

What began as a small fire outside the building spread with terrifying speed, fuelled by highly combustible materials used in Summerland's construction. As flames engulfed the complex, families desperately tried to escape. By the end of the night, 50 people had lost their lives and scores more had been injured.

But the Summerland disaster was more than a tragic accident. Questions would soon emerge about the design of the building, fire precautions, evacuation procedures and a catalogue of decisions that had left thousands of people dangerously vulnerable.

Lockerbie Revisited: The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103

On 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was flying from London to New York when a bomb exploded on board as the aircraft passed over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

All 259 passengers and crew were killed, along with 11 people on the ground. With 270 lives lost, the Lockerbie bombing remains the deadliest terrorist attack ever carried out on British soil.

But nearly four decades later, the story of Lockerbie is far from over.

As the case returns to the headlines and a new trial approaches in the United States, we revisit one of the most significant and complex stories ever covered on Seeing Red.

Who was responsible for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103? How did investigators piece together an extraordinary international investigation from the wreckage scattered across hundreds of square miles? And why, 38 years later, do questions surrounding Lockerbie continue to provoke controversy?
