Pain Is So Close to Pleasure19 Sep 202400:58:32

Tony Robbins once said that “The Secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you can do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.” Then again, Tony Robbins is a gigantic cock womble, so I wouldn’t listen to a damn thing the disingenuous clagnut says. Listen to us instead. We’re talkin’ Queen!

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “All I wanted was to start a new relation” or possibly “All I wanted was to flip a Kind of Magic to Side B”.

Today's episode looks at a Brian riff that Freddie and John tried to write a Motown song around; "Pain Is So Close to Pleasure", from 1986's "A Kind of Magic".

NOTE: Skip forward to 14:57 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The music at the end is "When I'm Gone" taken from the second release by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. You can find it here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=jfPRCn2JAm4

Bob Dylan - I Contain Multitudes12 Sep 202400:30:38

As a huge thank you to the people who have very generously donated some of their hard earned scratch to us over on our Ko-Fi account, we came up with the idea of letting people give us non-Queen songs to talk about and vote on. This week's song was requested by Michele Stagman-Kurlander.

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I'm just like Anne Frank" or possibly, "like Indiana Jones".

The third episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the lead track from Bob Dylan's 2020 release "Rough and Rowdy Ways", the tongue-in-cheek, yet playfully introspective, "I Contain Multitudes".

If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! We also have a private channel in our Discord community for donors.

Funny How Love is18 Jul 202400:58:39

He unscrews the cap of a new whiskey bottle, shuffles about in his candle-lit hovel in his candle lit hovel, like some kind of tit, with blue fingers in mittens, he smells like the cats, and the neighbours he sickend. But enough about Randy, I’m going to make him blush! Settle down with your best cat, your best whiskey and your best mittens and get ready for some Queen, cos that’s what we’re talkin’ about!

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Funny how buried the vocals are” or “The spleen isn’t the sexiest organ, but the body isn’t complete without it”

Today's episode looks at "Funny How Love Is"; the gloriously glammy halfway house between the behemoth "March of the Black Queen" and the equally seismic "Seven Seas of Rhye".

NOTE: Skip forward to 16:45 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is a devilishly funky little tune called "Kind of Love" by Randy's old band Absofunkinlutely. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTF2BsiemPQ

Khashoggi's Ship11 Jul 202400:54:48

An interesting fact about Saudi Arabia for you is that Oil was first struck there in March 1938, in the Dammam Oilfield. In Riyadh, around 100 camels per day are sold, and it’s home to the world’s largest sandy desert. Oh, also, they murder journalists in cold blood and are surruptitiously buying up sports franchises all over the world to distract us from the fact. Never mind eh, let’s talk some Queen!

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Who said that my party was all over?" or possibly "Get off my fucking boat!"

Today's episode looks at the continuation of the part with the second song on "The Miracle", "Khashoggi's Ship".

NOTE: Skip forward to 14:07 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is God Save the Queen, Pt 3 bu Randy's old band Absofunkinlutely. Check it out here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=AL34VRX5xkc

Water04 Jul 202400:32:27

It’s not the A side and it’s not the C side, well it’s the seaside as in all one word s e a… you get what I’m saying. It’s the B SIDE pod review. We’re not digging into the main catalogue today because Randy’s off working on some or other big budget Hollywood production and rubbing shoulders with the Scorseses of the world, but we’re going deep, and we’re still sittin around talking about Queen!

If Kevin were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Summon the Kraken!” or possibly, “Geez, this didn’t get finished for The Miracle and My Baby Does Me did?”

Today's episode looks at Brian's half finished doodle "Water" which was included on "The Miracle Collector's Edition"

NOTE: Skip forward to 8:37 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bottom End Machine by RandyWoods Band. It's definitely not written about a former bandmate. Honest. Check it out here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=HnZeFWNBXBE

White Man27 Jun 202401:07:34

White men have a lot to answer for. Now don't get all Jordan Peterson on me and say "NOT ALL WHITE MEN!" No, not all, but damn well enough! And certainly historically. But is it a good idea for rock stars to tackle serious subjects? And how does Brian do with this one? It's back to back Bri and this week's episode is full of Stampeders and Carneys. Kev also gives an update on the upcoming Queen World Cup!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Don't you see the light behing your blackened skies" or possibly "White man builds a big fire and sits far way. Native man builds a small fire and sits close"

Today's episode means we've now covered half of A Day At The Races. It's time for Brian's screed against colinialism, "White Man"

NOTE: Skip forward to 18:13 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Fyah Dey, by Randy's good pal Oral Fuentes. Check it out here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ATENbKcEbew

Sail Away Sweet Sister20 Jun 202401:06:42

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I know you’re my sister, but I'm looking at you... You could sort of condense the lyrics in this one down to that sentence. Nylon strings, epic bass, and a soulful piano make up the bones of this song, but its muscle comes from the brilliance of Brian's voice and guitar work. There's a change in the format and the boys are ready to rock. There were five different manifestations from this week's album, so the wheel spun up none of them!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "How come you behave this way" or possibly, "Maybe Bri's parents shoulda got the boy a dog"

Today's episode covers our fourth track from The Game, Brian's sinister lamentation, "Sail Away Sweet Sister"

NOTE: Skip forward to 23:52 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bode's Galaxy, by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/lB7iaAnZOZc

Put Out the Fire13 Jun 202400:52:57

In materials science, quenching is the rapid cooling of a workpiece in water, gas, oil, polymer, air, or other fluids to obtain certain material properties. A type of heat treating, quenching prevents undesired low-temperature processes, such as phase transformations, from occurring. It does this by reducing the window of time during which these undesired reactions are both thermodynamically favorable and kinetically accessible; for instance, quenching can reduce the crystal grain size of both metallic and plastic materials, increasing their hardness. All that has fuck all to do with this week's episode.

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "There's nothing burning!" or possibly "Why didn't Rog' put gong on this track?"

Today's episode covers the side two opener to Hot Space, Brian's gun-law-hoo-haw, "Put Out the Fire"

NOTE: Skip forward to 11:58 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bode's Galaxy, by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/lB7iaAnZOZc

Bohemian Rhapsody06 Jun 202401:30:54

Today's episode covers the big cahuna. The monster. The behemoth. None more Queen. The song that didn't just put Queen on the map, but also tore the map up into tiny little shreds and force fed the pieces to an ungrateful music press who just didn't get it.

"Unfortunately, Queen’s lyrics are not the stuff of sonnets." - TIME magazine

"...a brazen hodgepodge..." - Rolling Stone

"A superficially impressive pastiche of incongruous musical styles..." - Melody Maker

"It has no immediate selling point whatsoever" - Record Mirror

"They sound extremely self-important" - NME

"The critics can go fuck themselves" - Cardinal Woods

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Nothing really matters" or possibly, "I wonder who played gong on this track?"

It's Bo Rhap time.

NOTES: Skip forward to 38:47 if you want to skip the preamble.

The song featured at the end of the episode is "Hint of Grey" written and recorded by our very own Ian Winick in his former duo, John Loves Julie. You can find all the music over on SoundCloud, here: https://soundcloud.com/johnlovesjulie.

Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)30 May 202401:04:27

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Is life real? Can you breastfeed yourself? And what are those stains on your pillow? If I were to title this episode, I’d probably call it “Nothing is Real” or possibly “The milky boobs are on me!”.

Today's episode covers Freddies ode to the fallen Beatle, "Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)".

NOTES: Skip forward to 30:39 if wanna get straight into the manifestations from our dynamic duo and their dastardly discordants!

If You Can't Beat Them23 May 202401:17:05

Randy's having trouble with the word minfastition, maniseftation, fannystemnation, well whatever it is, Randy just can't say it! In a first for the podcast, there is live confectionary eating and mroe discussion about cake than anyone needs to hear, but, we've drawn a line under it now, so we can all put it behind us! We're talking filler, we're talking Jazz, and we're definitely talking shite!

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “You’re never gonna help yourself”, or possibly, “Deacy definitely didn’t deliver!”

Today's episode covers the Deacy's side one contribution to Jazz, "If You Can't Beat Them".

NOTES: Skip forward to 33:51 if wanna get straight into the sunnydestinationd, the funnysensations... the, ach you know, wheel spin! Also, the sound quality is a little bit off on this one as the technical frustrations we had setting up to record in person the way we tried didn't yield the best results, so we won't be doing that again.

The song featured at the end of the episode is "Never Said"; Kev's platonic love song to his childhood best friend who succumbed to his cancer in 2017. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGsINNg8l_c

Ogre Battle16 May 202401:03:20

Randy's having problems with his issues, whatever the hell that means! And he still won't quite raggin' on poor Kev about the Shepherd's Pie debacle. Bastard! We're goin' deep into fantasy this week and we've already had one duster from Randy for a proggier flight of fancy from Brian, way back in Episode two (oops, spoiler alert), but will he risk incurring Kev's wrath and dust this one too??? He is a man who, by his own admission, would kill for a Nobel Peace Prize... And to think, we knew him before he became notorious, and then curiously decorated!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Two way mirror mountain" or possibly, "I wonder who played gong on this track..."

Today's episode covers the monstrous opening to Side Black of Queen II, "Ogre Battle".

NOTE: Skip forward to 31:08 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. Just remember, if you do that, you're missing all the good stuff and you're not really getting everything out of this podcast that we poured our hearts and souls into!!!

The Loser in the End05 Sep 202400:57:55

Once upon a time, there was a guitarist named Mick Mars. He practiced every day. He practiced every night. He got so good that a famous musician named David invited him to be one of the spiders from Mars. After recording and touring for years with the Thin Ziggy Starman, he wanted to challenge himself more musically, so he joined the highly sophisticated intellectual rockers, Mötley Crüe, who didn't have a shit name or a shit singer and a shit drummer. Mick became the most succesful guitar player in the world. Then he died. The end. According to Kev.

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Forget regrets" or possibly, "Hey guys, check out this fill!"

Today's episode looks at the only Roger composition featured on Queen II, an ode to a dysfunctional maternal relationship, "The Loser in the End"

NOTE: Skip forward to 16:43 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The music at the end is "Charisma Free" taken from Randy Woods Band's debut record. If you wanna listen to it (and you definitely should, lots), go check that out here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjt_wffBiXk

Killer Queen09 May 202401:12:30

Saltpeter and sulfur and charcoal, oh my! How many pods within a pod can you reasonably expect to get away with? The cake vs pie fiasco has now spilled over into another podcast, and Corey's not having it! This week sees Kev and Randy take on one of the titans of the Queen discography. Our intrepid pair aren't scared though, in fact, they laugh in the face of danger, they tickle the bollocks of fear, and then give terror a wedgie and tell it to go fuck itself.

If Kevin were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Triangles and tubular bells" or possibly "She's out to get you!"

Today's episode covers Queen's monster breakout single from Sheer Heart Attack, the ever so dandy, "Killer Queen"

NOTE: Skip forward to 31:35 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. Just remember, if you do that, you're missing all the good stuff and you're not really getting everything out of this podcast that we poured our hearts and souls into!!!

The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love03 May 202400:31:44

Well, it's not Queen is it! What the fuck are these two idiots doing now? Branching out into other artists? I mean, they're more ripping off Pod of Thunder than In The Lap of the Pods, but hey, a good idea is a good idea. We wanted to say a huge thank you to the people who have very generously donated some of their hard earned scratch to us over on our Ko-Fi account, so we (and by that we mean "Kev") came up with the idea of letting peopel give us non-Queen songs to talk about and vote on.

Today's very first episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the third single from The Darkness's debut album, "Permission To Land"; the falsetto-driven "I Believe in a Thing Called Love".

If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! We also have a private channel in our Discord community for donors.

Man on the Prowl02 May 202401:05:05

How big is a bee's dick exactly? Well, if my extensive online research is to be trusted (and there's no reason it should be), it's 4.8mm on average. Holy shit! Bee's are packing!!! No wonder the Queen is knackered all the time... The cake vs pie fiasco rumbles on with neither side willing to give an inch, or a fuck, and we would urge you all to please remember that it's fun to clap with a friend. But, no-one should pump anyone, until I blow this whistle. Even if, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say Jehovah! We're talking piano, we're celebrating "Our Man From Estevan", and we're most definitely 100%, absolutely sure about our vote on this one. No really, we are unwavering in our decision. We didn't for one second wonder whether we'd voted the right way.

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Dude's jaded and looking for the ladies" or possibly, "Baby please don't go"!

Today's episode covers the side one closer from The Works, Freddies rockabilly sequal to Crazy Little Thing Called Love, "Man on the Prowl".

NOTE: Skip forward to 33:46 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. We won't hold it against you! No really, we won't! Well, maybe just a little bit...

Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and BlueSky! Also, come join us on our Discord server, we'd be glad to have you! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. Fight from the Inside25 Apr 202401:15:57

What are maple syrup tits? Well, I can't say that we ever got to the bottom of that, but Randy was sure insistent that it's a real thing even though Kevin was sceptical. The pie vs cake argument rages on and Kev is fiendishly plotting a Shepherd's Cake recipe, to prove to Randy that pie is better. We also learn that if there's no top it's a tart (and without context, take that any way you like!) and that Chrissy has designs on Brian's body after last week's song! Oh - and we talk a little bit about Queen...

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Ooh ooh ahh" or posibly "Attack from the rear"!

Today's episode covers the side one closer from News of the World, Roger's virtually solo effort, "Fight from the Inside".

NOTE: Skip forward to 36:21 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. We won't hold it against you! Unlike Dr. Hook, who wants us to!

The song featured at the end of the episode is "Humble Pie", written, recorded and performed by our very own Randy Woods with his old band, Absofunkinlutely. You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCSRnIrUk-A

Some Day One Day11 Apr 202401:25:33

"Hey dipshits, how come you spent so long talking about hockey, bowling, and Roger Waters instead of getting on with talking about Queen?" Good question, good question... Also - we need to petition cinemas to have intermissions. Don't know why I thought of that just then, but maybe it will become more clear in the episode. Randy tells us about his Martin D-28, Kev tells us about his bowling playoffs, and we listen to a little bit of Q+PR. Imagine that! It's all happening this week.

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Any night tonight" or possibly, "Trite 'n' shite!"

Today's episode covers our first song from Side White of "Queen II" and closing song in Brian's suite, "Some Day One Day"

NOTE: Skip forward to 39.07 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. We won't hold it against you! Well, we will, but we'll also still love you. We're weird like that...

Hammer to Fall04 Apr 202401:07:37

"Good evening, this is Radio 4, with the news at six o'clock this Thursday evening. The Prime Minister, speaking a few minutes ago in the House of Commons, has warned that the international situation is deteriorating rapidly, and that war could break out at any time in the next two or three days."

Who in their right mind thought that showing "When the Wind Blows" to kids was a sane and reasonable thing to do? Between that and Jeff Lynne's War of the Worlds, I spent a good year or so of my life absolutely shitting myself. The dust settled, a new Queen album came out and then Brian brought all those feelings of dread back again, albeit to a rocking good riff and a brilliant vocal from our Fred!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Hey! That cloud looks like a mushroom" or possibly, "No nukes in my nieghbourhood"

Today's song covers the fourth and last single from 1984's "The Works", the darkly menacing "Hammer to Fall"

NOTE: Skip forward to 30:57 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. We won't hold it against you!

She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)28 Mar 202401:06:28

Queen: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Seaside Pod Review. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new songs; to seek out new lyrics and new musicla expressions; to boldly go where millions of people have gone before! It's all a bit moody over here at the SPR. Randy hasn't forgotten his suitcase this time and Kev's German accent is definitely on point!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Darth Vadar in flats” or possibly, “When I get home I'm gonna rip my wife's underwear right off, cos the waistband is killing me.”

Today's song covers Brian's funereal dirge "She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)" from 1974's superb "Sheer Heart Attack".

The cover version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Listen to Her Heart by Cyberattack, which is clipped in the episode, can be found here: https://youtu.be/EINdLqmcYH0

Larry Lurex - I Can Hear Music21 Mar 202400:48:04

Come and listen to my story about a man named Fred.

A poor balladeer, barely kept his kittens fed

And then one day while John and Roger stewed,

Well up through the mic come a bumblin dude.

Robin Cable that is, Trident Engineer, Phil Spector Wannabe.

“I CAN hear music”, or possibly “It’s not exactly a wall of sound, more a small privet hedge of sound…”

Today's song covers a song never originally intended to be a single. It features three members of Queen and a whole lot of reverb. It's the song that came out before Queen's debut album, "I Can Hear Music".

NOTE: If you want to skip straight to the manifestations and wheel spin, that happens right around 13:19.

I Want to Break Free14 Mar 202401:24:51

There once was a Queen fan from Wigan

Whose nose he was told was a big 'un

He tried to break free

Then he fell to his knees

And consulted the Cardinal's florilegium

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Get a grip America” or possibly, “Simply sensational synthtastic solo”

Today's song covers the worldwide chart hit from "The Works", the slick pop anthem "I Want to Break Free".

The song included at the end of the episode is the inimitable Dudley Moore performing his masterpiece "Jump", live in 1973.

NOTE: There's a fair bit of jibber and also some jabber at the top of this one, so if you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, we won't think any less of you. Skip forward to 42:53 if wanna get to the good stuff!

The March of the Black Queen07 Mar 202401:37:33

Hey, does anyone read these episode descriptions? I could probably write anything here couldn't I? I could ask you to send me photos of your favourite letter box. Maybe I could see if someone would be willing to paint themselves orange, stand on the steps of Huddersfield Town Hall and repeatedly scream "Life goes on BRA!" for four hours, or until the local constabulary arrive to deal with them. Maybe I'll start a movement of some kind and I can relay secret messages to my followers here, like the spies used to do with the Times crossword. Things like, "The elucidated octopus knows no pity". You know, that kind of thing...

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Bo Rhap before Bo Rhap" or possibly "Them dudes can play!"

Today's song covers the monumental centre-piece from Side Black of "Queen II", all six and a half minutes of "The March of the Black Queen".

The song included at the end of the episode is "Pharmacist on a Harley" from the latest Randy Woods Band album, "Soul Hammer" and you can find it here! https://youtu.be/WgARAxQqifw

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 46:58 (yeh we know, it's a long one this week folks!)

You don't fool me

They say that repetition can be your friend in music. Well, with fronds like these, who needs anemones?

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Won't get fooled again" or possibly, "Queen's Nothingburger".

Today's episode looks at the David Richards-assembled mashup of leftover vocal takes from Freddie, "You Don't Fool Me".

NOTE: Skip forward to 15:27 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The Invisible Man29 Feb 202401:18:26

"The stranger came early in February, one wintry day, through a biting wind and a driving snow, the last snowfall of the year, over the down, walking as it seemed from Bramblehurst railway station, and carrying a little black portmanteau in his thickly gloved hand. He was wrapped up from head to foot, and the brim of his soft felt hat hid every inch of his face but the shiny tip of his nose; the snow had piled itself against his shoulders and chest, and added a white crest to the burden he carried."

That's the intro to H.G. Wells classic book.

"I'm the invisible man

I'm the invisible man

Incredible how you can

See right through me"

That's the intro to this week's song. H.G. Wells it ain't!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I want a new invisible man" or possibly "Love is a stranger, invisibly"

Today's song covers the fourth single from Queen's last album of the 80s. That's right, it's "The Invisible Man"

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 37:58

You're My Best Friend22 Feb 202401:07:50

Truck yeah? Fuck no! A week late week for Valentine's day, it's time to hold hands with your significant other, take a long walk down the beach together, look deeply into each other's eyes and say "Whaddya fancy for supper then...?" There's a touch of class about this week's song and even if Roger thought it belonged in a knitting circle rather than a rock band's repertoire, it still make the top ten and the Greatest Hits record, neither of which Rog' managed up until The Works. So stick that in your carburetor and smoke it!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Happy at home" or possibly "Deacy gets freaky with his missus!"

Today's song covers the first Deacy-penned single in the Queen catalogue, "You're My Best Friend" from 1975's "A Night at the Opera"

The song included at the end of the episode is "Amazed" by Kev (played on, recorded, produced, and mixed by the Cardinal!) Check it out here: https://youtu.be/YQ-qg29lfMw

Get Down, Make Love15 Feb 202401:15:11

Strawberries can go fuck themselves. Blueberries can go fuck themselves. Kraft Dinner? Yep, it can go fuck itself. What about peanut butter? Absolutely 100% suitable for a good go fuck yourself. That’s just list of foods I find unacceptable and I feel should be banned, but we’re not here to talk about shitty eats. We’re here to talk about killer beats. Come on so heavy, cos we’re talkin’ Queen.

Today's song covers the opening track on side two of Queen's 1977 masterpiece ,"News of the World", the erotically charged "Get Down, Make Love"

The song included at the end of the episode is "Why Can't We Get Along" by Randy Woods Band. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/kzR1Dq9JWrk

Scandal08 Feb 202401:04:28

Bangkok to Saskatoon, kick a dick and see ya soon. That’s the opening number in my new rock opera titled “I wish I could think of a better blurb for this podcast”. I’m not gonna lie, I miss old Randy doing the intros and outros. Don’t tell him I said this but he’s kinda good at them. Anyway, chop all the letters out of the newspaper and blackmail the local vicar, cos if Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Scandal, what scandal?” or possibly “More sauce please.”

Today's song covers the fourth album from Queen's 1989 album ,"The Miracle". The video bored Roger to tears, but will the song work for our interpid pair of podcasters?

Brian May - Driven By You01 Feb 202400:42:58

You know we love you but you drive us crazy! Randy is off globetrotting on the other side of the pale blue dot, shoveling sushi and noodle bowls into his poodle hole and generally having a grand old time without me! Well, I’ll show him what for in the intro and outro. Slip it into first, push the seats back, and enjoy the ride, we’re talkin’ Queen.

If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Driven by Who?”, or possibly “We do like cheese!"

Today's song is already our second from Brian May's first full solo album ,"Back To The Light", the piece that was originally commissioned by the Ford motor company, "Driven By You".

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 10:08

Don't Try Suicide25 Jan 202401:19:24

Don't stop me now I'm here, Dear Friends will be Friends, Don't lose your headlong, A human body language, and Father to son and daughter. Phew, Pank sure was busy coming up with song title mashups on social media yesterday wasn’t he! I blame Richard Hearn. Look, we passed the open windows last week, but we’re talkin’ defenestration, we’re talkin’ ‘bout da Vinci and Rembrant, but most of all, we’re talking Queen!

If Kev were to title this episode, he’d probably call it “Nobody's worth it”, or possibly “Don’t Do It”.

Today's episode covers only our third song from "The Game", Freddie's black comedy aimed at an ex-lover, "Don't Try Suicide".

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 35:50

OUR APPEAL: If you are experiencing severe depression and are having suicidal thoughts, please reach out for help as soon as you can. You can always contact the Samaritans, free of charge, on 116 123, or by visiting their website samaritans.org.

Keep Passing the Open Windows11 Jan 202401:07:52

Welcome to another episode of this ridiculous podcast, with ridiculous hosts who have ridiculous opinions talking to ridiculous listeners about a ridiculous band. It's just ridiculous.

Randy pulls out his Wilford Brimley impersonation and is absolutely delighted by the sight of Freddie's football getup in the Gaga video and Brian's bone guitar! We also get down to the serious questions, like "Who's banging Mrs. Clause?", "What's the matter with Andrew?", and of course, "Are your men on the right pills?" Randy has beef with Corey, Kev is caught in the middle, and this really is the only life for all of us. So sit back, put your feet up, we're talking Queen!

"This is the only life for me" or possibly, "Stepping Out, ala Queen"

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "This is the only life for me" or possibly, "Stepping Out, ala Queen"

Today's episode covers only our second song from "The Works", the piano-led Freddie movie song, "Keep Passing The Open Windows".

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 33.05

Ride The Wild Wind04 Jan 202401:11:48

Picture the scene; a small village pub where a young couple are enjoying a quiet drink together before going to tell her parents that they're engaged to be married. They hear a low rumbling in the distance that gets steadily louder, to the point where their small wrought iron table starts to shake and the barely-twenty somethings grab their drinks (he a pint of Strongbow, she a delicate rosé from California.) All of a sudden, a sports car comes drifting around the tight corner spraying dust and pebbles all over the couple, cracking the wine glass and shattering one of the decades old front windows. The car screeches to a halt and a lithe, dirty blonde-haired man wearing leather pants, a sleeveless white tee, and shades alights, walks over to the couple, says "Push the envelope, don't sit on the fence!", retreats, climbs back into the driver's seat, and shouts "I'M IN LOVE WITH MY CAAAARRRRRRRRR!" before gunning it, spraying more pebbles, and a starlted vole, into the carnage he's already created. As the car speeds off into the shattered still of the countryside, the license plate "MEDW$" can just be made out as it shrinks to a dot and vanishes.

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Don't sit on the fence" or possibly "Why didn't someone buy Rog' a rhyming dictionary?"

Today's episode covers another Roger car song, this time from "Innuendo". That's right, we're covering "Ride The Wild Wind".

Tenement Funster28 Dec 202301:10:46

It's a Roger tune. It's from Sheer Heart Attack. It's a song The Cardinal does not know, so Kev gets to watch his pal hear the song for the first time. We get into the weeds about endings and medleys and solos, oh my! There's more talk about Metallica's drummer (honestly, this is the last week!) and Randy reveals why he didn't buy his wife a Christmas present this year. He also gets all emotional about a rescue. It's pathetic, to be frank.

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Rog', just turn down the stereo!" or maybe "Mr. Randy really fucking blew it this time..."

Today's episode covers Roger's solo contribution to "Sheer Heart Attack" and he's wearing purple shoes. It's time to check in with the "Tenement Funster".

Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme)21 Dec 202301:23:20

Kev was just tryin' to pod. That's all. He wasn't asking for much. We get into the weeds about a brown Christmas, Randy is still salty about not being able to get a burger in Kindersley at 11pm, and the boys discover that they have a potential double act that they may or may not choose to exploit at some future point. Also, Kevin makes a very strange noise and there's an awful lot of childish tittering in this hour and twenty-ish minutes of nonsense! Plus, LACROSSE TALK!

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Can we wrap up this Highlander stuff already?" or possibly "Kurgen. Kurgen? Who the fuck is Kurgan?!"

Today's episode covers Brian's heavy metal ode to the antagnoist from Highlander, "Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme)"

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 40:55! Yeh, we went on a bit!

Bijou22 Aug 202400:55:33

You grow up, go to school, study hard, pass your exams, go to college, take some more exams, work hard some more, you get a job, earn a bunch of money and save as much as can and eventually you buy a house, you fill it with all the things you want that make your life as comfortable as possible and you meet a girl, she steals your heart, you start a family, and you accumulate a whole bunch of new stuff. Then after all this work and all this accumulation, she wants to drag you off "camping" to go live in the fucking woods and live like a goddamn Neanderthal for no fucking good reason!!! Anyway, fuck camping. PLAY QUEEN LOUD!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Jewel of the Nile" or possibly, "Oodles of Hoodala Hoodala"

Today's episode looks at the Freddie/Brian composition that tees up The Show Must Go On (aka Queen's last masterpiece), "Bijou"!

NOTE: Skip forward to 20:54 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

Las Palabras De Amor (The Words of Love)14 Dec 202301:17:41

Randy and Kev hit upon a phenomenal business idea after identifying a serious gap in the market where banjo players are concerned. The accordian is selected rather than a kazoo, we find that Arpeggio isn't the current AC Milan left back (who knew!), and Randy called his shot; well, on the album front at least! It's all going down on this week's episode and we'd like to drag you into the insane muck with us!

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "I love Queen, just not all their songs" or possibly, "Buena banda, mala canción"

Today's episode covers Brian's synthy track from side two of "Hot Space", the soaring "Las Palabras De Amor (The Words of Love)"

NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 35:49!

If you want to check out the Absofunkinlutely track that we used in the episode, "Soul Sucker", which was written by the Cardinal and included the album "Blues Kid City", you can check that out here. It's a vibe! https://youtu.be/dDaByP0nXWs

Misfire07 Dec 202301:10:31

"Hey guys, the bass player wrote a song and he wants to play it for us". "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, wait, what? You're serious? Oh OK then, yeh let's hear the bass player's 'song'..." That's usually the way it goes in bands but John's first contribution made it onto side two of 1974's adventurous masterpiece, Sheer Heart Attack. Roger gets a new drum, Kev's the Turkey of the Month, and we get into the weeds about the future of music as an AI "artist" is signed to a contract (and people wonder why I drink!")

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Is misfire a euphemisim?" or possibly, "Your gun is loaded and pointing my way!"

Today's episode covers Deacy's first solo contribution to Queen's catalogue, "Misfire".

All God's People30 Nov 202301:21:51

I had this perfect dream... and then I woke up. But, weirdly, when I woke up, I found out that Randy is running for the office of the Prime Minister of the Central African Republic! Yeh, THAT Randy! The guy who downvoted The Prophet's Song! I mean, how in the green shit did we end up here? Well, you can listen to the episode to find out, but you're gonna have to wade through a whole lot of us talking about a wide range of topics, from Nellie the Elephant to Bryan Adams. From Bruce Dickinson to Scott Moe (fuck that guy). Oh, and Queen. We definitely talk about Queen!

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "All God's People", because he's a lazy, lazy good-for-nothing son-of-a-bitch!!!

Today's episode covers some of the leftover scraps from Freddie's Barcelona sessions, the aforementioned "All God's People".

Jesus23 Nov 202301:15:31

Back to the first record! We're trapped in the seventies for a third week in a row and we are not mad about that! I checked on Wikipedia and apparently, this Jesus fella was kind of a big deal in Judea in the 0000s. You probably know him best from his range of sandles and uncomfortable headwear but to many he was much better known as a carpenter, principally through his Dad's construction business. There was a lot of property development around Jerusalem at the time as the populaton bounced back from Psycho Herod's mad slaughter campaign a few years earlier. Incredibly, Herod faced no charges and was retained as monarch for a substantial period! Sorry, I got a bit carried away down the Wikipedia rabbit hole there. In this episode we talk quite an awful lot about Queen! And why not. That's what the podcast is about after all!

We also listen to the De Lane Lea version of Jseus to see how it differs from the eventual recorded version.

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "I bet Jesus couldn't drive a stick shift" or possibly "Stone Cold Jesus!"

Today's episode covers the penultimate track from Queen's debut album "Jesus".

Stone Cold Crazy16 Nov 202301:20:32

Well, we're going back a couple more years and heading to Sheer Heart Attack. Kevin almost manifested the song for the second time!!! No, seriously, he was like 3 pixels away!!! Randy knows this song, Kev knows this song and the boys get into a discussion about whether Roger Taylor is swinging the beat. Kev insists he is, Randy is not convinced! The first song that Queen ever played live and a mainstay of the set from 1970 to 1978, this is possibly the first thrash metal song. It's also the first song credited to all four band members, mainly because they couldn't remember who'd actually written the lyrics!

We also listen to the BBC version of Spread Your Wings after repeated recommendations. Oh, and we talk about the Metallica cover that inexplicably won a grammy in 1991.

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Wouldn't a wet fish bone smell worse" or possibly "Stone Cold Crazy Rocks"

Today's episode covers the heaviest song from arguably Queen's heaviest album "Sheer Heart Attack", we're all "Stone Cold Crazy".

Spread Your Wings09 Nov 202301:20:38

We've gone forward to the past! Yes, we've abandoned synths and drum machines, said farewell to high-gloss production and made our way back to Frank's house to talk about one of Deacy's very best tunes. We'll discover what hairy big toes have to do with anything, what Randy has been spending his time doing instead of working on proper music, and there's more whining and moaning about Sportsball from the Cardinal, whose eventual funeral we cordially invite you all to attend. In and amongst all this, we talk guitar tone, economy of arrangement, and C-sections (not that kind).

We also talk a little bit about the Fab Four's recently released final single, if you're a Beatles fan at all, and if you're not, take yourself outside and give yourself a jolly good talking to!

If Mr. Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Who does Sammy think he is?" or possibly "Does the Emerald Bar server deep-fried pickles?"

Today's episode covers the penultimate track from side one of 1977's "News Of The World", "Spread Your Wings".

Hang On In There02 Nov 202301:09:27

Back to the Miracle sessions! We're stuck in the 80s folks. It's lycra pants, polyester jackets and really, really, really bad haircuts all the way! It's also damn near our one year anniversary! We're so thankful for all of you who have tuned in to our nonsensical ramblings and incredibly sorry to have put you to so much trouble!

Can Kev and Randy find anything nice to say about another song from '89? Will Sylvester Stallone appear at the beginning of this song to avenge his mother's aunt's cab driver's cousin's hairdresser and foil a plot by the nazis to switch out her mousse for brylcreem? What am I talking about? Do you know? DO I KNOW??? There are no answers in this podcast, but you're welcome to listen along anyway!

If Mrs. Mr. Randy were to title this episode, she’d probably call it "Thank God you're still alive" or possibly "It's another song from The Miracle".

Today's episode covers the B-side to "I Want It All", "Hang On In There"

The Miracle26 Oct 202301:23:13

Four weeks in a row now we've been stuck in the 80s. We feel like a modern Marty McFly and Doc Brown. And as Randy is older than Kevin, that makes him Doc Brown, which is slightly confusing because that's Kevin's surname. Hey ho. What does Alanis Morissette have to do with The Miracle? A complete lack of understanding of the meaning of words apparantly.

Every drop of rain that falls in Sahara Desert : meteorology

The Golden Gate and the Taj Mahal : engineering and architecture

Test tube babies being born : chemistry and biology

Mothers, fathers dead and gone : simple atrophy

Not a miracle among them.

What on earth were the boys on when they assembled this list of so-called "Miracles"? We don't know, and we're betting neither do you. But hey, no-one ever said that a pop song had to make sense. Bob Dylan once wrote "The sun's not yellow, it's chicken!" so maybe this is all OK...

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "We're having a miracle on earth", or possibly "What is a miracle?"

Today's episode covers, you guessed it, the title track from 1989's "The Miracle".

Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter and Facebook! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. We're loving diving into the Queen fandom a little more deeply as much as we're enjoying recording the podcasts!

Princes of the Universe19 Oct 202301:15:16

What the hell is a case hammer? No, no, no, it's Kaeshammer. Michael Kaeshammer - and we talked about the gig we went to a little bit in this one. We also see the return of LaCROSS-TALK albeit only conceptually. Look, Celine Dion is so Celine now there is none more Celine than she. And also, to make sure the algorithms work; Corey Morrissette. How do we know what NASA isn't telling us huh??? We don't! There's a discussion about space battles and whether we sould tax MTG. Oh, and we also talk about the hard rocking album closer from A Kind of Magic, which is kinda the whole point of the show, isn't it!

If Randy were to title this episode, he’d probably call it "Born to be Kings", or possibly "Half a mic stand against the world!"

Today's episode covers another track from 1986's "A Kind of Magic", "Princes of the Universe".

Who Wants To Live Forever12 Oct 202301:16:21

From the dawn of time we came; moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering; when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you... until now. This week we're covering a song that Kev has a strong emotional connection to and Randy hasn't heard before!!! How is that possible? Well, he's Canadian, that's how! And in the early 80s, North America decided that, for some reason, Queen wasn't cool! Well, to North America, we say, "Go fuck yourself". Possibly with an Oh Henry!

If I were to title this episode, I’d probably call it “Verge of tears” or possibly, “Kev needs to get a grip! But not of a coffee crisp!”

Today's episode covers "Who Wants To Live Forever" from 1986's "A Kind of Magic".

You Take My Breath Away15 Aug 202400:51:34

Episode 92 in the books already? Are you serious? We’ve covered more songs than we have left and the only big questions we have left to answer in the second half of the pod are; will Randy’s hat finally be fucked? How much is his oath going to suffer? And is he quite as committed to the church of Go Fuck Yourself as he was in the beginning?

If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “I get ever so lonely from time to time”, or possibly, “Shorter of breath, one day closer to death!”

Today's episode looks at Freddie's almost-solo tour-de-force from Queen's fifth album, the hauntingly beautiful "You Take My Breath Away"

NOTE: Skip forward to 8:56 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

Party05 Oct 202300:58:01

It was the best of podcasts, it was the worst of podcasts, it was the podcast of wisdom, it was the podcast of foolishness, it was the podcast of belief, it was the podcast of incredulity, it was the podcast of light, it was the podcast of darkness, it was the podcast of hope, it was the podcast of despair. Track One from The Miracle this week folks. People have opinions about this song. They're not all positive. But they're definitely not all negative. But they're REALLY not all positive. The boys split the vote again.

If I were to title this episode, I’d probably call it “Randy forgot to title this episode” Or possibly, “The Cardinal really needs to get a grip!”

Today's episode covers the song "Party".

Brian May - Last Horizon28 Sep 202300:44:11

Due to technical issues (AKA, Kev's an absolute knobhead!) we're presenting you with B-Side Pod Review installment ahead of schedule this week. Look, we all know that the solo output from the members of Queen rarely, if ever, reached the heights of what they accomplished as a quartet, but you know what? That's not gonna stop Randy and Kev from rambling on about it at the same sort of length they do in regular episodes. So sit down and get ready to be sedated. Nothin' to do, nowhere to go, so you may as well just enjoy the ride.

If I were to title the episode, I’d probably call it “Telegram for Brian May. Message reads. It’s too long. Stop. Please Stop.” or “Well, at least the lyrics aren’t bad…” We’re sad that we couldn’t spin the big wheel tonight but happy we got to take a sideways step out of the main catalogue to talk about a solo effort.

Today's episode covers instrumental "Last Horizon" from Brian May's debut solo LP, Back To The Light.

More of That Jazz21 Sep 202301:14:24

Hello all you wagoners, politicians, pedagogues, thiefs, tailors, ploughboys, harridans, and tatterdemalions. The fairy folk have gathered 'round the new moon shine To see the feller crack a nut at night's noon time. To swing his axe he swears, as he climbs he dares To deliver another episode of Seaside Pod Review. Sit back, grab a comfy seat and a good beer, cos we’re talking Queen!

If I were to title this episode, I’d probably call it “Seriously, no more of that Jazz” Or possibly, “When a great fifteen second idea is packed tightly into four minutes”. The Cardinal sure was crusty tonight but he lightened up thanks to another Queen song and may I say, the enigmatic and dashing presence of his friend, me.

Today's episode covers the song that closes Jazz; More of That Jazz.

10 from 40 #one15 Sep 202300:49:03

SURPRISE! It's bonus content time. Randy is now a bonus content creator and he's thrilled about it!

As if you haven't suffered enough this week, we thought we'd foist an unrequested episode on you. We were just hanging around online and decided to take a look back at the first forty episodes and pick ten songs that we'd put on an album. And then talk about it. For too long. It's what we do! Not to give anything away, there were only five common tracks on Kev and Randy's albums and Kev was surprised at a couple of key omissions by the Cardinal. We also talked about sex robots.
