Magical Mystery Tour (film) Watchalong15 Oct 202501:18:35

The panel watches the 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour. Originally a television special for the BBC on Boxing Day (day after Christmas, Americans) it is now seen as the Beatles third movie. A largely improvised film led by Paul, the film is seen as.... a mixed bag! A lot of the sequences are kinda, how do I put this, boring? But we also have a great music video for I Am The Walrus and some comedy(ish) sequences that are fun!

Watch along with us!

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new Bob Dylan biopic, "A Complete Unknown" starring Timothy Chalamet, directed by James Mangold has been in theaters. The panel took this chance to spend an episode talking about Bobby D.

We don't know his music nearly as well as we do the Beatles. But we are fans. So we just took turns picking songs and talking about them.

Here's the songs we discuss in this episode:

Visions of Johanna
Billy 1
Ring Them Bells
I Want You
Murder Most Foul
Most Of The Time
Most Of The Time - Tell Tale Signs version
Threw It All Away
Idiot Wind
Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
4th Time Around
Nettie Moore
Congratulations - Traveling Wilburys
Ballad of a Thin Man
The Time They Are A Changin'
Girl From A North Country
When I Paint My Masterpiece
Hurricane

As you can see we jump all over the place! Hope you enjoy this!

Beatles '64 Documentary - Abridged10 Dec 202400:16:00

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel discusses the new documentary Beatles '64, released November 2024 on Disney Plus. Using a lot of behind the scenes footage from the Beatles first U.S. visit, which includes their landmark appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Although this is not the landmark event that Peter Jackson's Get Back doc was, it's still really fun for Beatles fan.

A lot of the behind the scenes footage is from the journalists Albert and David Maysles. As Will points out, a lot of it was featured in a VHS tape called The First U.S. Visit. But the doc add a lot of interviews with Paul and Ringo, as well as journalists, musicians (Smokey Robinson) and some of the original Beatles fans captured on film at that time.

Will was a bit grouchy -- he'd seen a lot of this footage in an old VHS tape called The Beatles First U.S. Visit and wasn't into the talking heads interview. The other panelsts enjoyed it a lot!

Fantasy Next Beatles Album - Abridged18 Nov 202400:16:16

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel guesses at what the next Beatles album might have been if they hadn't broken up. This is a common pasttime for Beatles fans, and is one of the most commonly suggested topics for an episode! Well, we try it!

We decided that the album could be 48 minutes maximum, and could include any song that was available for the Beatles to record by December 1970.

Will, Joel, Katie and Brett each had very different approaches to their albums. Listen to hear our picks, and then join our Discord (info at screwitpodcasts.com) to discuss what you would have done.

NOTE: We forgot to consider "It Don't Come Easy" by Ringo Starr. We were thinking of it as a 1971 song but of course it was recorded in 1970 and should have been in consideration. I'm sure there's others but this is a big enough oversight that we wanted to flag it here.

The Concert for Bangladesh (film) - Abridged28 Oct 202400:15:34

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel had never seen this 1972 concert film of George Harrison's seminal fundraising concert. We watched and it and, of course, loved it.

The Concert for Bangladesh was the first celebrity concert fundraiser, at least in the rock and roll space, and it's a great one. You've got incredible musicians on stage: George, Ringo, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Badfinger and more. You've got George doing live versions of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (trading solos with Clapton), Something and Here Comes the Sun. You've got Ringo doing "It Don't Come Easy" to raucous applause. Even the disorganized moments (so many guitars? George forgetting lyrics to Something?) and the notable absecnes (no Paul, no John) do not take away from the overall joy of this terrific concert.

We get into it!

BONUS EXCERPT: One Hand Clapping - The Film04 Oct 202400:13:37

This is a short except from a bonus episode available in our subscriber feed. We discuss the FILM "One Hand Clapping!" To subscribe go to screwitpodcasts.com.

Here is the description from our bonus ep:

------------------

The panel discusses the recently re-released version of One Hand Clapping, the documentary! it's footage of Wings in the studio, originally filmed for the BBC. Now, it's a precious time capsule of young Paul McCartney executing the beginnings of his post-Beatles catalog.

We also get into: the director's intereste choices of extreme close ups, Geoff Britton's karate gis, whether or not the conductor of the orchestra looks like Geraldo Rivera, how cool Linda looks, and lots of other stuff!

One Hand Clapping - Abridged20 Sep 202400:15:16

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panels takes a look at what essentially is a live Paul McCartney solo album: One Hand Clapping. Done as part of a television special for the BBC in the 1970s, this album are some songs Paul recorded with a lineup of Wings shortly after he'd (they'd?) done their amazing album Band on the Run.

Although passed around as a bootleg for years, a well mixed and professionally mastered version was released this past June with some extra tracks.

We got a lot of live, loose, energetic Paul McCartney. Some of the versions of songs here, like Live and Let Die, surpass the studio versions. Some are just as good (Jet). And the ones that don't (Band on the Run) are still so fun to hear. Paul's confidence and joy come through in every track. There's also several unfinished songs that end up on future Paul projects (like I'll Give You A Ring).

We also listen to the "Backyard Sessions" which is a recording of an impromptu solo acoustic performance Paul did on lunch while the main album was being recorded. No lunch for the recoring engineer when Paul is around!

We love it!

Give My Regards To Broad Street - Post Film Discussion - Abridged20 Aug 202400:15:06

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had planned on doing a "watch along" of Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984 Paul McCartney film), which we did. But then the next day we were texting so much about it, and we soon all realized we watned to record ANOTHER WHOLE EPISODE ON IT.

So this episode is that: a follow-up to our viewing of Broad Street.  A one hour follow up. Maybe you only want to hear this discussion. Maybe you only want to watch the film along with us. Maybe you will do nothing but consume media about the film "Give My Regard To Broad Street" for the rest of your life!

The movie is truly interesting. Not so much the movie itself, but what it could have been. And what Paul's motivations might have been for doing it. There's lots of good ideas in it, and also lots of things that just don't work. As you can hear, we really enjoyed watching the film and talking about it.

Give My Regards To Broad Street - WATCHALONG - Abridged19 Aug 202400:15:24

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel does a "watchalong" of the 1984 Paul McCartney film "Give My Regards To Broad Street."

We are watching a version that is, as of this podcast release,  on YouTube. "Give My Regards to Broad Street Full Movie Full HD." We start watching at 12:03.

This movie is a fictional day in the life (no pun) of Paul McCartney. There's also a plot in which a friend seems to have stolen the masters of an upcoming album, and Paul needs to find these masters and determine if his friend actually betrayed him. Along the way, there's several performances of Beatles tracks and McCartney solo tracks, including the lovely new song "No More Lonely Nights." Ringo makes an appearence, as does George Martin, and Linda and Jeff Porcaro (drummer from Toto) and John Paul Jones (bass player from Led Zeppelin) and... it's wild!

This movie is basically not well-regarded. It was a flop commercially and critically. But there's really interesting sequences. And as Beatles fans, it's interesting to try and guess why it appealed to Paul to do.

We were so fascinated by it that we got together the NEXT DAY and recorded another whole episode discussing it! That episode will appear next in this podcast feed, probably tomorrow.

Mind Games 2024 Ultimate Remix - Abridged19 Jul 202400:14:36

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

Okay we go a bit crazy and spend over 2 hours talking about the new release of John Lennon's 1973 solo album Mind Games.

But it's understandable! First we had to talk about Mind Games in general -- how he and Yoko broke up as he started recording, the incredible session band (assembled by May Pang -- who became his girlfriend, as 'assigned' by Yoko), how John's previous lackluster album Some Time in New York City pressured him to go "back to basics", etc.

Then we had to talk about all the mixes included in this release! We've got the Ultimate mix (bringing John's voice out), the minimal Elements and Elemental mix, the Raw Studio mix that lets you hear the band's take with minimal studio effects, and the Evolution mix that includes snippets of demos and rehearsals.

And THEN we go song-by-song.

If you just want to hear us go track by track, that starts at about 58 minutes.

Okay! Get your friendship meters calibrated, pledge your loyalty to Nutopia and buckle up for a deep dive into the underrated Lennon album Mind Games.

Beatles in the 1980s - Abridged15 Jun 202400:15:03

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

Our special guest this episode is Eric D. Johnson of the incredible band Fruit Bats. In addition to being an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist, Eric is a massive Beatles fan. He joins us to discuss a fascinating topic: the Beatles in the 1980s.

When you're done listening to this episode, buy the Fruit Bats latest album "A River Running to Your Heart" or get their new live album "Starry-eyed, in Stereo."

(And check out the video to "Sick of this Feeling" featuring your co-host Will Hines.)

Okay, the 1980s. Be warned: opinions ahead.

This is a strange and fascinating time for the Beatles and their music. Of course, it begins with the tragic murder of John. We hear the surviving Beatles each deal with that in their music in different ways. There's also the challenge of them reaching middle age, trying to adapt their sound to the MTV generation. There's also the lawsuits, which prevent Paul from joining the others as they get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

Those are some of the lowlights. But there's also immense creativity. While John gets turned into a saint in the media, Paul experiments (McCartney II, Tug of War, Press to Play, etc) more than ever. George too seems to break free of his Beatledom first with a hit album (Cloud 9) and then by forming his own super group, The Travelling Wilburys. Though John never got to enjoy this time, the fans get two more Lennon albums: the underrated Double Fantasy and the excellent Milk and Honey.

There's a lot. We discuss.

I fully admit we give Ringo short shrift on this discussion. Though we do take a quick journey into the (appropriately) insane song "Drumming is My Madness." We'll make it up to you, Ringo!

Chaos and Creation In The Backyard19 Sep 202501:46:31

The panel goes over Paul's 2005 solo album Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. This was a big change of pace for Paul. He teamed up with Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich and produced a series of mostly quiet, introspective and beautiful songs. The most famous track from this album is probably "Jenny Wren" but every one is interesting!

Beatlesque Songs - abridged15 May 202400:14:57

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

Beatlesque songs. Or is it Beatles-esque? We say it both ways in our traditional not-quite-sure-we're-right style!

But the point is we bring songs to the table that have reminded us of Beatles songs. There are so many ways this can happen! Sometimes it's the harmonies, sometimes the arrangement, other times the quality of the vocal. Sometimes it's something even more subtle.

This is not by any means a definitive or iconic list. This represents a thing all Beatles fans go through, which is hearing a song and going "oh man, this feels like The Beatles."

Some of the songs / artists discussed:

  • Zuder Zee

  • Adrian Belew - Men In Helicopters v4
  • Squeeze - Up The Junction

  • Prince - Around The World In A Day period

  • Elton John - Yellow Brick Road

  • The Knickerbockers - Lies

  • Michael Rault - I'll Be There

  • The Nerves - When You Find Out

Get Back (2021 film) - Discussion06 Dec 202102:07:27

In this two hour discussion, the panel gets into the amazing tour de force Beatles documentary "Get Back." Directed by Peter Jackson, released as three 2.5+ hour episodes on Disney+ over American Thanksgiving weekend in 2021, this doc is taking Beatle fandom by storm. It's an incredibly intimate look at the band at work. Yes, we see the fights and the tension. But we also see the friendship and empathy, the musical genius and passion for what they were making. You feel as if you are really hanging out with the Beatles in an unguarded environment. In addition to that intimate feeling, you see many now-iconic Beatles songs (aren't they all iconic, though) get developed, sometimes from scratch right before your eyes.

Among the many subjects we touch on: all the toast, Yoko Ono's presence, the relationships between Paul and John and George, whether Ringo is chill sad or hungover, the director Michael Lindsay-Hogg (villain or just arrogant 'college sophomore' energy), Billy Preston's incredible impact, calming George Martin, George's cool clothes, the musicianship and seeing them play, how we're hungry for MORE MORE of this kind of footage if only it existed, Ringo's fart, the cops and the straps in their mouths, the stuffy London business owners, Peter Sellers, Paul's ambition, the flowerpot conversation, the songwriting, Allen Klein, Glyn Johns, Apple Studios and Magic Alex' insane guitar prototype.

Beatles fans everywhere are joyfully examining and discussing this documentary.  It's an incredible film and a joy to watch. I hope everyone listening to this feels the same way!

Solo Beatles: Ram14 Jun 201801:21:18

We go over Paul McCartney's second post-Beatles album, RAM. Criticized upon its release, it's now considered one of his best solo albums! Brett Morris in particular doesn't want to hear you people who don't appreciate this album!

We get into the unfair expectations on Paul, his insane vocal range, the inventive orchestrations, the as-usual-perfect-melodies. We also get into what we think the other Beatles might have brought to this.

And Joel does too many puns about name Klaus, a man who was not involved at all with this album!

Personal Memories of Every Beatles Song31 Aug 201702:35:10

PLUG: Live show coming up Monday Sep 4th 10:30pm at UCB Sunset in Los Angeles! Singing Beatles songs! Come out!

------------

Good idea gone terribly wrong? Brilliant art project? Or perhaps the most faithful fulfillment of the title of this podcast?

Our panel (Will Hines, Ariana Lenarsky, Wayland McQueen) welcomes guest Arthur Meyer (writer for The Tonight Show, also a human being) as we go through EACH AND EVERY BEATLES SONG to see what our personal / emotional associations are.

I somehow did not realize this would take two and a half hours. I honestly thought "eh, hour, hour and 10 minutes." You can hear me at the 90 minute mark apologize to the group and predict we were about half an hour away from being done. Nope. Another full hour awaited us.

Did I think about chopping this episode down to a more humane length? Yes. I could have skipped all the early albums, for which we didn't have as many memories. Or cut every song for which we had zero personal memories (often true for amazing songs like Lucy in the Sky). But that seemed like a cop-out, hard, and also would still have only gotten this down to an hour and forty five minutes.

So, I'm just leaving it here.

Even if you never listen to this, I do recommend DOING this with your Beatle loving friends. We four learned about each other, and it WAS very fun to DO. You'll be surprised what memories come up. The Beatles are ubiquitous and have bled into our consciousnesses and memories throughout our lives.

Ariana remembers hearing "Yesterday" when she was six years old!

Arthur seems to know the favorite Beatles songs of all of his friends and lovers!

Wayland was married before! News to us!

Will and his brother Brian used to wake up to a different Beatles song every day until they made the mistake of picking "Good Day Sunshine!"

Anyway. Here it is. 2 and half hours of it. "Enjoy!"

Beatles Guitar Playing (4 Guitars)24 Aug 201701:24:53

Beatles guitars! We have four guitarists on to talk about Beatles songs in terms of the guitar parts in this plus-sized episode!

Topics include:

The ninth chords that ends a lot of the early songs;

the iconic beginnings of A Hard Day's Night / Day Tripper / I Feel Fine and more;

George solo in All My Loving;

cool chords on Michelle;

sick Paul solo on Taxman;

dual guitars on She Said She Said;

easy songs to play around a campfire;

the clawhammer picking on the White Album;

George's stellar contributions to Octopus' garden;

She's So Heavy

More!

Were we up to the technical challenge of recording four guitars in the host's living room with whatever cords people brought to the session? Not always! But the love for the music stays strong throughout!

Plus we do our own version of the Abbey Road trading guitars jam --- at the one hour and twenty minute mark! Necessary? No! Fun? Yes! And as with all our jams it has that first take authenticity! (Order of soloists: Joel, then Brett, then Mike with James playing rhythm).

Panelists: James Bachman, Mike Carlson, Will Hines, Brett Morris, Joel Spence.

18 - Sgt. Pepper's Remix01 Jun 201701:09:06

EMERGENCY EPISODE (er, kind of): We review the new remix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! We get deep into audiophile things, talking about where the instruments are panned in terms of "left" vs "right" and the what the previous versions of this album were like (mono vs stereo), and what the difference is between "remastered" and "remixed."

We check out the extra tracks a bit, including the first take of "Lucy in the Sky."

It is nerdy and specific and fawning and fun. Stick around after the theme to hear Brett Morris noodling on his guitar and talking a bit about John's songwriting.

14 - Abbey Road13 Apr 201701:15:46

Abbey Road. How did we ever think there was an album better than this? Our panelists enter into a state of transcendental bliss as they listen to the entirety of this, the last album the Beatles recorded. We realize that we have loved this album our whole lives. Every track we find ourselves saying "oh, no, THIS one is our favorite." It doesn't seem to get old. The Beatles (+ producer George Martin, engineer Geoff Emerick) use everything they've learned along the way -- and they've learned a lot. In just 7 years, the band has evolved from a merely brilliant blues-rock cover band into the greatest team of songwriters, performers and studio producers that has ever been known in pop music.

"Come Together" "Something" "Here Comes the Sun" "You Never Give Me Your Money" "Oh! Darling" "Because" "Golden Slumbers" "The End" -  These songs are perfect ideas, made better by performance, better again by production and better yet again by being in proximity to each other. This is a perfect album. We will hear no dissent.

After this, they broke up.

This is the end of Season 1 of our podcast. There will be a Season 2. Stay subscribed to hear details once we've figured that out. Thank you so much to everyone who has listened to any of these episodes!

Panelists: Curtis Gwinn, Will Hines, Ariana Lenarsky, Joel Spence.

Walls and Bridges15 Aug 202501:30:18

We go over the 1974 John Lennon album Walls and Bridges! This was John's 4th solo album, and the final one he recorded before going on a nearly 5 year hiatus from recording. It's got the hits "#9 Dream" and "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" but of course has a lot of great songs besides. The panel gets into it!

13 - Let It Be06 Apr 201701:10:49

Our panel dissects the strange album that is Let it Be. Part live album, part throwback, part new songs, part movie soundtrack - what IS it? Something like 10 producers worked on it (2 mostly) and it didn't even come out until after the Beatles broke up. (We're covering it now because we're doing the album in the order they were recorded, not released).

We still like it a lot.

Our panel also gets into what the sexiest Beatle song is, that Paul McCartney is Jackie's real dad, that Heather has weird taste in what counts as a sexy song, and that the song Let It Be is one of the most perfect songs ever.

Panelists: Lynsey Bonell, Jackie Johnson, Jen Krueger, Katie Plattner, Heather Woodward.

Holy crap. Just three albums in and we are already at a masterpiece: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. Spoiler alert: We love it. This is the first "all killer, no filler" album. It's so happy! But wait, it's sad! And holy crap: they had "Can't Buy Me Love" and also "If I Fell" on this album? And the title track? AND EVERY SONG? Panelists: Will Hines, Joel Spence, Curtis Gwinn, Ariana Lenarsky.

Deep Cut Beatles Best Of (Abridged)21 Jul 202500:18:18

This is an abridged episode. For the full version, subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com

--------------------------------------------------

What would you put on your Beatles best-of if you couldn't use any of their hits? That's the challenge the panel does in this episode.

We each complied a "deep cut" Beatles best-of. These were our rules:

  • Nothing that was on the "red" (1962-1966) or "blue" (1967-1970) albums, including the 2023 expanded versions.
  • Nothing that was on the Beatles "1" compilation.
  • Nothing that was on the "Past Masters" collections.

We limited ourselves to 78:30 -- the length of the "1" CD.

It was a fun challenge! Listen to what made the lists!

RIP Brian Wilson - Abridged19 Jun 202500:15:30

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our tribute episode to Brian Wilson, the leader of the Beach Boys, who died on June 11, 2025.

We talk briefly , in our usual "mostly informed" way, about the relationship and influence between the Beatles and the Beach Boys. We talk in general about the incredibly transformation the Beach Boys' music went through over time. We talk about Brian's mental health struggles.

And then we take turns sharing a bunch of great Beach Boys songs!

The music sharing starts at around 25 minutes in.

CORRECTION: For some reason we (I?) keep saying the Brian Wilson biopic/ song is called "Love and Fear" but the correct title is "Love and Mercy."

----------

Our bonus episode this month (coming a few days after this one) for subscribers is a thought experiment in which we pitch what artists it would have been especially fun to see collaborate with either the Beatles or any of them in their solo careers.

Let It Be... Naked - Abridged31 May 202500:15:57

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let It Be came out in May 1970. In honor of its anniversary we look at Paul McCartney's version (basically) -- Let It Be... Naked. This is a version of the Let It Be album with much of producer Phil Spector's production removed. There's a different sequence of songs, different songs included and left off and very different production.

It's a really fun listen!

---------

Our bonus episode this month for bonus subscribers is an hour look at some Phil Spector songs. He was the final producer of the original Let It Be album and made a ton of great music. He was also an abusive man who committed murder! Life is complicated, to say the least.

But the music is great and was influential on the Beatles. We go around the panel, picking songs.

Midas Man Watchalong - Abridged28 Apr 202500:15:35

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: although Midas Man is not available on major streaming platofmrs, you can buy and watch it at this link:

https://bit.ly/4jQmYGa

This supports the creators of the movie better than watching it on streaming does!

-------------------------

In this episode, we do a watchalong to the 2024 film Midas Man, which tells the story of Beatles manager Brian Epstein.

This movie currently not available for streaming in America, just Europe. But we believe it will be available for streaming soon!

The movie watch starts at about 21 minutes in.

We were inspired by director Sam Mendes planned FOUR Beatles biopics, one for each member. It's a very ambitious goal for a genre -- Beatles biopics -- in which there currently almost no success stories.

Portraying the Beatles is really hard! We're so familiar with the real thing! Getting the rights to the songs is tough!

Midas Man is a respectable film in many ways: the actors are really good, the production is professional. Epstein is a fascinating guy. In the end, the panel of this podcast that despite it's strengths, it doesn't pull off the job of giving us the feeling of the Beatles' world.

Also, Jay Leno plays Ed Sullivan, which is something we did not know going into this.

---------

Our bonus episode this month for bonus subscribers is a 40 minute look into session drummer/genius Bernard Purdie's claims that he did overdubs on 21 Beatles tracks. This claim has been debunked, but Purdie sure seems to think it happened. What's the story? It's interesting and we get into it.

Living In The Material World - Abridged14 Mar 202500:16:06

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel takes a look at George Harrison's 1973 album Living In The Material World. Our reason is that a re-release came out last year (2024) and we've been meaning to examine it. But also we are sometimes big dummies who haven't given things a proper listen and it was just long overdue for us to give this a proper listen.

Hey, guess what? It's good.

It's listed on Wikipedia as his 4th solo album but that's because they are counting his experimental albums Wonderwall Music and Electronic Sound (done while the Beatles were still together). Most fans would consider this to be his second solo album, following the massively successul 1970's All Things Must Pass.

Compared to the epic feel of All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World is more contained. This feels more like a small rock combo delivering simple but effective arrangements. We've got a lot of the usual suspects for Beatles solo albums: Nicky Hopkins on keys, Jim Keltner on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass. We also have lots of George solo and rhythm guitar. A little bit of sitar. A little bit of string arrangements.  It sounds modern to our ears. His voice is really front and center, especially in this new 2024 mix. It feels vulnerable and bold.

The two most famous tracks are likely "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)" and "Be Here Now" but every track is thoughtful and interesting. The Beatles seemed incapable of going through the motions. Every song has SOMETHING unique and unexpected.

It's a great listen!

Look Up - Ringo Starr - Abridged20 Feb 202500:15:55

(This is an abridged version - subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for the full version)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel goes over Look Up, the 21st studio album from Ringo Starr. Largely written and produced by T-Bone Burnett, this album features a bit more of a country flavor, though still unmistakably Ringo, maybe because he's one of the most famous people on the planet.

We like this album because we like Ringo, and it's a pleasure to spend time with his voice. We go over positive and negative reviews for the album. We talk about the phenomenon of Ringo in general, and what makes him so likable. We speculate on why he is so prolific, and how we're glad he still does so much.

Anthology 422 Dec 202502:41:35

The panel goes very deep on Anthology 4, the "new" volume of rare tracks released as a sequel to the 1994 documentary / music release Beatles Anthology.

I put "new" in quotes since many of these tracks were included on the re-mixes of Revolver, White Album, Let It Be and Abbey Road.

It's a fun listen. We spend a lot of time going track by track to give our thoughts on it.

Today (March 26, 2026), Paul McCartney announced that he finished a new album that will come out in May, called The Boys of Dungeon Lane. He also released the first single, which is called "Days We Left Behind."

We listen to it and talk about! And we also talk about what it felt like to hear Paul was releasing another album.

Also, some of the panel won tickets to the McCartney concert happening in LA tomorrow (March 27) and so... we are excited!

Man On The Run25 Mar 202601:20:16

We cover the new Paul McCartney documentary MAN ON THE RUN, out on Amazon Prime, which covers the Wings part of Paul's post Beatles era.  Among other things, we hear Paul's motivations behind founding Wings, the emotional struggles after the end of the Beatles, thoughts about John's angry statements about Paul, his marriage to and relationship with Linda, musical decisions of many of his best known songs, his reaction to John's death and more.

Overall it's a compassionate look that's surprisingly honest, given that Paul is an executive producer. The panel largely wanted more depth, but also enjoy what's here.

In our "I Read The News Today Oh Boy" segment, we discuss Peter Jackson's statement that there is footage of the White Album being recorded, and Paul's upcoming "intimate" concerts in Los Angeles.

Anthology Episode Nine23 Feb 202601:14:42

The panel goes over the newest episode of the Beatles Anthology - Episode 9! Released last November (2025), this episode shows interviews of Paul George and Ringo at the time they were filming the Anthology in the mid-90s. We see their thoughts and feelings about looking back on the Beatles. We also get extended looks at the recording the John Lennon Demos "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love." We get a surprisingly happy George, Ringo warmly telling Paul to quit horsing around and a generally sunny time.

We also quickly discuss the upcoming Sam Mendes Beatles biopics, Ethan Hawke's Beatles take and a Mark Lewisohn ... er, power point presentation?

One to One: John & Yoko (Lennon Concert Documentary)28 Jan 202601:21:03

The panel goes over the recent documentary ONE TO ONE: JOHN & YOKO. This is a look at John's only real solo concert, which he did at Madison Square Garden in 1972 to benefit a children's hospital. The doc also takes a lot of the news issues of the day which were influencing John and his struggles with immigration at the time.

We're amazed at realizing how intense the nightly news was at this time, and it gave us new perspective on John's more politically minded songs and activism.

There's a lot of fun footage, including many phone calls John and Yoko were having with their staff and reporters.

EMERGENCY EPISODE: Paul Rocks The Fonda30 Mar 202602:32:04

This weekend (March 27 and 28, 2026), Sir Paul McCartney and his band did an "intimate" concert for just 1000 people in Los Angeles, at the Fonda Theater. 3/4 of the panel was there, so we did this episode to discuss it! Will, Joel and Brett share their memories, while Katie is here to help us describe things and do her best to contain her seething jealousy!

Joining us is special guest Scott Aukerman! You know Scott from Comedy Bang-Bang and a million other cool comedy projects. But he's also an avid music fan and LA concert-goer. He's also the reason Brett was able to see the show!

We dive DEEP on the details of entering the lottery, buying the tickets, the sound check, the show itself, the other guests in attendence, what happened on Saturday night which we did not see, and much more.

For a diehard Beatles fan, seeing Paul in concert is an insanely happy experience. The show was great, and we're excited to talk about it!

John & Paul: A Love Story In Songs25 Apr 202601:21:03

The panel reviews and discusses last year's hit Beatle book John & Paul: A Love Story in Songs, by Ian Leslie. We loved this book.

For those who haven't read it, it's a "biography of a relationship" - telling the story of John and Paul's partnership through their songs. Each chapter is named after a song which means even the table of contents tells a story.

For the casual fan, this book is a pretty thorough summary of all the major events of their lives. For the Beatles experts, Ian underlines facts you might not have noticed (John and Paul both use "I" even when they trade lead vocal on "A Hard Day's Night", the album Rubber Soul took just 14 days of studio time to record?) as well as thoughtful connections you might not have considered (You can see "Tommorrow Never Knows" as an answer to "Yesterday").

His description of the songs themselves captures what it feels like to listen to them. He rightfully points out that any Beatles fan has listened to "Hey Jude" so many times it's ironically tough to ACTUALLY hear. They he describes the gradual build of the song that it pops into your head, fresh for the first time in years!

It's a best seller so many of you will have read it. If not, we think you'll love it if you do.Panelists: Will Hines, Brett Morris, Katie Plattner, Joel Spence
