Just under 3 months have passed since Euro 2024 so we briefly reflect on Scotland's performance at the tournament.

S13E68 Euro 2024: The Morning After the Night Before - Hungary24 Jun 202400:27:38

Sadly it's the last of our Morning After the Night Before podcasts and this one feels like the most painful of hangovers as Scotland bow out of Euro 2024 following an agonising 1-0 defeat to Hungary.

John B is joined by Robert McCahill and Kevin Donnelly and we simply go over what went wrong. What tactics should've been deployed, were the substitutions too late and predictable, why we only had 17 shots on goal in three matches? The biggest question is is Steve Clarke's time up? So many questions to be asked.

We end on a positive by rounding up what the tournament meant to us and here's hoping we get to another major tournament soon.

The SWPL1 action resumes this weekend and there are three derby matches to look forward to, and SFF Podcast brings you the best preview possible ahead of the big matches.

Firstly, we have the Women's Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers on Friday night at the Penny Cars Stadium, Airdrie. Dave spoke to Celtic midfielder Natalie Ross and Head Coach Fran Alonso to talk up their chances of a home win, and also spoke to Rangers Manager Malky Thomson as his side seek to get three vital points in their quest for back-to-back titles.

Next up is the Edinburgh derby, which is being played at Tynecastle on Sunday. John caught up with Hearts Head Coach Eva Olid and Hibernian centre half Siobhan Hunter to get their thoughts on the match, with Capital bragging rights up for grabs.

Lastly it's off to Lanarkshire and the match between Motherwell and Hamilton, also on Sunday at EK Park, East Kilbride. Ahead of this derby, Vinny spoke to Motherwell captain Gill Inglis and Hamilton Assistant Coach Bobby Watson.

We wish all six clubs the best this weekend and hope the matches are backed with a good crowd at each stadium as the Scottish Women's game continues to grow.

S12E36 SWPL January Review03 Feb 202301:01:19

It's been another fascinating month in the SWPL as regular trio John, Vinny and Dave look back at the last few weeks in the top two divisions in the Women's game.

January definitely belonged to Glasgow City in the title race as their main rivals Celtic and Rangers drooped two points apiece in their respective goalless draws with Motherwell and Hearts. Two wins and a credible draw away to the champions helped interim-Head Coach Leanne Ross stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis. With four points separating the three sides, and with Celtic hosting both City and Rangers before the split, it's sure to be an intriguing title race.

Hearts impressive season under Eva Olid continues and she has added Gavin Beith to her backroom team. Gavin kindly took time to talk to Dave about joining the club after stints at Aberdeen and Dundee United, and what he's expecting from the role as second first team coach. Their Edinburgh rivals Hibs had another erratic month but still have done enough to all but assure top six football, whilst two points separate Partick Thistle, Motherwell and Spartans for the remaining spot. Meanwhile Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hamilton are in a tight battle to avoid the playoff spot against the SWPL2 runners-up, and Glasgow Women's wait for their first point in the top flight goes on.

At the top of SWPL2, Montorose took control of the title race with impressive wins over St Johnstone, Queens Park and Stirling University, whilst Gartcairn have suffered from a curse of this podcast as a draw and two defeats saw them surrender top spot since Robert McCallum's appearance. Kilmarnock could still make this a three horse race if they come out of games against the top two at home victorious this month.

We round off with predictions for this weekends matches in SWPL1. We will return later in the month with a look ahead to three derbies taking place on the weekend of 24 February, so tune in for that.

S12E35 Fan Special: Charlie Banks31 Jan 202301:19:14

In our latest episode, regulars John, Erin and Jeff are joined by Hibs fan Charlie. He returns to the podcast after being on a couple of our Premiership specials.

We kick off by chatting about Hibs weekend over Aberdeen at the weekend which resulted in Jim Goodwin being relieved of his managerial duties at Aberdeen. Does the victory give Lee Johnson more time for Hibs fans to change their mind about whether he should stay?

There is some chat around the transfer window closing but it looks like there won't be much more business done in the Premiership.

Charlie discusses some of his favourite memories supporting Hibs, answers some quickfire questions and gives us his all time Hibs eleven.

S12E34 Marvel at Darvel24 Jan 202301:56:35

Regulars John, Josh, Krys, and Scott J are joined by special guest Robbie Hanratty.

There is no surprise that much of the focus is on what happened at Recreation Park where Darvel produced the biggest upset in Scottish Cup history.

We discuss where Aberdeen go from here as it is expected that Goodwin will be sacked and that problems run deeper than just the management.

Credit to Darvel on their win and thanks to John Walker, video analyst at the club for speaking to John B about the occasion.

On the back of this we discuss the Pyramid system and agree that there needs to be more movement to allow teams to progress.

The transfer window closes next week so there is some chat surrounding that and criticism of VAR.

S13E67 Euro 2024: The Morning After the Night Before - Switzerland20 Jun 202400:37:45

It's the second instalment of our Morning After the Night Before series as the two John's, Dave and Charlie review our result and performance against Switzerland.

Not that it would've been difficult but it was a more positive vibe from the Germany review, and the lads almost have a glass half empty/half full approach as we debate whether or not it was a point gained or two dropped. We also discuss our chances of victory on Sunday, victory which surely would be enough to see us progress to the knockout stages for the first time ever.

S12E29 Lower League Mid-Season Review16 Dec 202201:24:26

The Scottish Premiership may be returning this weekend but the other three leagues in the SPFL set-up have carried on as normal and there has been no short of drama across the Championship, League One and League Two. To disect all the goings on, John B is joined by Alan (aka Air Force Wan, Paul Goodwin of SFSA and three wise men who know what it's like to play and coach at that level - Ally Graham, Davie Irons and Kevin Harper. Can Ayr maintain their surprising form that has catapulted them to the top of the Championship? Are Clyde and Peterhead doomed? Who is going to be in the playoffs at either end of League Two given the six point gap from fourth to tenth?

We round off with brief World Cup chat, another tangent on why Scotland aren't at the World Cup, and what the guys are looking forward to most about Christmas. Thanks to everyone for coming on.

S12E28 Suzanne Winters Wonderland09 Dec 202201:17:25

This weekend is another landmark moment in the Scottish Women's game as Rangers and Hibernian meet at Tynecastle in the Final of the SWPL Cup, now of course known as the Sky Sports Cup Final thanks to their recent investment. In line with this, John B is joined by current Sky Sports pundit and 104 capped ex-Scotland international Suzanne Winters (aka Suzanne Grant from her playing career).

Suzanne previews the big game and the significance of Sky's investment into the Women's game up here before elaborating on her role with the broadcaster. We then go onto talk about her playing career, where she made her international debut at 16 BEFORE making a club appearance. After starting out at local clubs Ross County and Inverness, Suzanne moved onto Glasgow City and her playing career would take her through Hibs, Arsenal, Celtic and Motherwell before retiring from a knee injury in 2017. She talks about the joys of each club she played for as well as highlighting challenges that she faced, including how a meeting between her mum and her school headteacher paved the way for her to allow her to play football instead of netball. Suzanne's twin sister Shelley is also a footballer and both are married to mens players, Suzanne to David Winters (brother of Robbie Winters) and Shelley to Don Cowie.

We round off with the usual quickfire questions, including a rather peculiar choice of pie.

S12E27 Ronaldo's Redemption02 Dec 202201:21:37

In this final World Cup throwback for the time being, John B, Krys and Scott get together once more. With the current World Cup taking place in Asia, the guys look back to the first Asian World Cup as Japan and South Korea hosted in 2002.

This was the start of Scotland's long absence, so there's a brief look back at what went wrong for our national side on this particular occasion. Krys had other interest with both Republic of Ireland and Poland qualifying for the tournament - to mixed success it has to be said.

There's a number of stories across this World Cup, from the fortunes of the two hosts - the first time and so far only time that a World Cup has been shared - to the beginning of the curse of the holders was well as a few more surprise packages in between. There is, of course, time to reminisce about England's exit and the return of a seven year old joke in the process.

But the story of this World Cup comes down to one of redemption. No, not David Beckham, but the original Ronaldo. Maybe not redemption for his barber though.

There's also a few mentions of the current World Cup action during this podcast, as we recorded on the night Japan helped send Germany crashing out of the group stages for a second successive tournament.

We hope you've enjoyed this series of World Cup throwbacks. Let us know if you have and maybe we'll look to do a few more in the future.

S12E26 Say It With Pride27 Nov 202201:10:54

It's another World Cup throwback as John B, Krys and Scott get together to discuss their first time. Fortunately it's Italia 90 they're discussing though.

Chatting through a Scotland qualifying campaign none of them actually remember, there's a brief chat about the mixed warm up schedule prior to the tournament before everyone of course remembers the opening game against Costa Rica. In typical Scotland fashion, they give themselves a chance with a win over Sweden, before achieving the usual glorious failure against Brazil.

The guys also look over the rest of the tournament, with some truly iconic moments and merchandise and a few well loved kits as well. For a tournament so often remembered for its poor final, it's clear why Italia 90 is still loved to this day - and not just because you really do always remember your first time.

S12E25 SWPL1 Derby Day Preview24 Nov 202200:48:31

It's another big weekend in the Scottish Women's Football calendar as we have Derby Day action in SWPL1. John B, Vinny and Dave are joined by the leagues Managing Director Fiona McIntyre to preview the games. The Women's Old Firm derby is up first on Saturday night at Broadwood, will the defending champions maintain their unbeaten record stretching back to the last day of the 2020/21 season, or will Celtic leapfrog their arch rivals with victory? Next up is the "Petershill derby" between Partick Thistle and Glasgow City, with Vinny promoting what's on offer for a family funday as well as the prospect of an exciting game between 5th and 2nd in the league. The only non-derby of the day is between Spartans and Glasgow Women, but this is no less significant than any other game this weekend with both sides looking to kick-start their respective seasons after a difficult opening ten games.

We have a first top-flight meeting between Dundee United and Aberdeen, which has been moved to Tannadice in order to attract more fans to the game. United will be looking to build on last weekends win by piling on the misery for the Dons, who've failed to build on their fifth place finish of last campaign. In the first of the Sunday evening games, Hamilton take on Motherwell and will take inspiration from their win at Fir Park last season, whilst 'Well will be seeking back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Last, and by no means least, is the Edinburgh derby between Hibs and Hearts in front of an expected record crowd for a domestic game in Scotland. Can the Hibees give themselves a pre-SWPL Cup Final boost, or will the Jambos increase the gap on their capital rivals with another three points.

Forget the men's World Cup, there's plenty to get excited about in Scottish Football, and this weekend is another chance for the Women's game to shine on centre stage.

S12E23 The World Cup That Changed The Game18 Nov 202201:29:50

In another World Cup throwback as the build up to Qatar 2022 continues, John B and Krys are joined by Matt Evans, author of USA 94: The World Cup That Changed The Game.

Matt explains his thinking behind the structure of the book, which covers off a number of story threads from the behind the scenes structuring journey of the American hosts to the team themselves, through the various nations involved including the shocks scoreline and the shock headlines.

The guys chat through qualification for the World Cup, the last one not to feature any of the home nations for various reasons, and some of the key moments that took place even before the tournament - hi Diana Ross!

They discuss some important goals scored in key games across the group stages and into the knockouts, and talk about how all the big players seemed to turn up at just the right time in the big games. Right up until that final moment of course.

Finally there's a look forward to the upcoming World Cup and a discussion on how the tournament might go for many teams, including Matt's home country of Wales who are playing in their first World Cup in 64 years.

Thanks to Matt for coming on, and be sure to check out his book on the link above or in all good bookshops.

S12E22 European Reflection08 Nov 202201:14:50

On our latest podcast, regulars John, Josh and Scott J are joined by Connor and Graeme who are both making their first appearances.

We reflect on a European campaign where three Scottish teams got in to the group stages for the first time since 2007/08.

Hearts took part in the European Conference group stages for the first time and that is where we start the discussion with Graeme reflecting on what could have gone better. Can Hearts qualify again next season and establish themselves as the third force in Scotland? There is also chat around where they need to strengthen the squad.

We move on to Celtic and whether they are too naive in Europe as Ange refuses to compromise on his football philosophy. They received plaudits at times for the way they performed but couldn't get any wins.

Rangers suffered the embarrassment of being the worst team in the group stages of the Champions League with questions surrounding GVB future as they struggle domestically. Josh reflects on what went wrong in Europe and we discuss under performing players.

The podcast concludes with some discussion about Scotland squad and whether we might see any surprises in it.

S12E21 La Coupe du Monde 9804 Nov 202201:38:16
With the World Cup due to start in a little over a fortnight, John B hosts a throwback to the last time Scotland were involved in FIFA's premier tournament. He's joined by Krys who watched the action having just left school (yes it's that long ago), and Kevin who actually got to France in the summer if 1998. Recapping the qualification process that took Scotland to the position of best runner-up and avoiding the playoffs, the guys reminisce of Scotland's home games being on tour as they seemed to be several times during the 90s, as well as crucial results in places like Minsk, Riga and that time there was one team in Tallinn. Moving onto the finals themselves, there was the initial reaction to the draw that means Scotland would open the tournament in Paris against the holders Brazil. It was then onto Bordeaux to face Norway before finishing the group in St Etienne against Morocco. The guys chat through each match of the group and their memories of not just the games themselves but the adventures along the way, the TV shows that were on around then, and even chat around the music choices. Following Scotland's usual exit, there's chat about the rest of the tournament including the best strips and the best games, and obviously all the drama around the final itself between the hosts and the holders. Hopefully next time the World Cup rolls around in 2026 we'll be looking forward to Scotland taking part once more and not just looking back through the mists of time to our last involvement. Ach we'll have Euro 2024 under our belt by then too! The moment we've all been waiting for since the Euro 2024 draw was made. Germany v Scotland, the opening game in Munich, the whole world watching, the Tartan Army in full voice - and Scotland didn't turn up!

John B, Josh and author Neil Doherty face the music from their respective locations within Munich to disect on what went wrong as the Germans turned on a fine display against a Scotland side who looked as spooked as rabbits in the headlights. They also look back at what it was like before the horror show in the Allianz Arena and we try to look forward to the Switzerland game, which remains the biggest match in the group. Is our tournament over after one match or can we still make history and get through to the knockout stages? What's certain is that we need to play a damn sight better than we did in Munich!!

S12E19 Spain '82 Throwback20 Oct 202200:49:10

World Cup 2022 is four weeks away. As Scotland fans, we don't care, so let's do what we've been good at for the last 24 years and look back at a time we made them regularly!

In this episode, John B is joined by fellow author Tom Brogan to recall Scotland's fortunes at Spain '82. Tom wrote a book on the subject titled "We Made Them Angry" in reference to David Narey's toepoke against Brazil. Tom goes through the process of his book and the inspiration behind writing about a tournament he watched as a ten year old with his Dad. We then go into detail about how Scotland got to Spain, the pre-tournament hype, the greatest Scotland football song "We Have A Dream" and onto recalling the three games that saw Scotland exit on goal difference for the third World Cup in succession.

We wish Tom all the best with his book sales, "We Made Them Angry" is a fascinating read, not just for Tartan Army footsoldiers either.

S12E18 We SWoNT Be Going Down Under13 Oct 202200:53:53

On this episode, John B is joined by Vinny and Krys to go over the Women's World Cup playoffs which sadly ended Scotland's hopes of reaching their third major tournament and second World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Having narrowly beaten Austria after extra time in the first round, the second round against Republic of Ireland was a bridge too far. We reflect on both games, asking the questions of what did and didn't work both individually and as a team, as well as thinking over how Hampden is working as the home venue for the SWNT.

Looking forward, we look at the possible hosts for Euro 2025 and discuss if there will be any changes to the squad with players retiring from international football or making the step up from the under-19s.

We finish off with a look forward to a return to club duty and discuss this weekend's SWPL1 fixtures.

S12E15 SWNT Playoff Preview30 Sep 202200:45:52

It's a big week ahead for the Scotland Women's National Team as they look to take a giant step towards qualification for a second consecutive World Cup Finals, being held in Australia and New Zealand next summer.

John B is joined by four special guests with a fountain of knowledge of the Women's game - Chris Marshall, Amy Canavan, Jane Lewis and Emma Black - to assess our chances of defeating Austria in the European Playoff Semi Final on Thursday 6 October, then Republic of Ireland on 11 October.

Fortunately, we have been given two home games at Hampden that increases our chances of victory enormously, albeit against two tough sides, particularly the Austrians who were Quarter Finalists at this summers Euro's. We look at the transition under Head Coach Pedro Martinez Losa, analyse the 25-player squad, assess the opposition and what we need to do to win the games. Chris also best explains the complex playoff route that will likely see Scotland facing an Intercontinental playoff scenario in New Zealand in February, but will only play one more game, therefore we are essentially three wins away from World Cup 2023.

Ticket prices for the games at the National Stadium are £10 adults and £5 concessions, with the Ireland game half price if you buy both matches together with a full refund for that game in the event of a loss to Austria (that won't happen). It's an even better bargain for Scotland Supporters Club members who get FREE entry to both matches, so if you can please get yourself along to Hampden to cheer the girls onto Australia and New Zealand next July.

S12E14 Scotland Nations League Roundup27 Sep 202201:20:50

John and Josh are joined by Alan as we preview the away game against Ukraine and reflect on our home double header.

We start off by discussing the importance of the game against Ukraine and whether Steve Clarke might be tempted to revert back to three at the back. The squad has been decimated by defensive injuries so if we are to get a positive result then we'll have done it under difficult circumstances.

There is discussion around whether the home game v Ukraine was our best under Clarke so far and the importance of having a good home record in the Nations League.

S12E13 Scotland Preview20 Sep 202201:11:41

John and Josh are joined by returning guest Michael as we look ahead to Scotland's home double header against Ukraine and Ireland.

Before that though Josh is keen to point out that Celtic got beat in the league at the weekend and this leads on to a brief chat about what went on in the Premiership at the weekend.

Scotland will look to get revenge on both their opponents this week after disappointing defeats to both in June. We look at the squad and try to work out how we can win both games. The squad selection is discussed as we assess who will start the Ukraine game.

Good luck to Scotland.

In our latest guest special, John B is joined by Aberdeen Director Zoe Oglivie.

Having worked closely with the club in her capacity at Big Partnership, Zoe was officially announced onto the Dons Board on 3 June 2021, becoming the first female to become a Director at the club. She talks about the moment the call came from Chairman Dave Cormack invited her onto the board, the challenges she has faced and the different styles both Cormack and predecessor Stewart Milne possess. She then discusses the Aberdeen Women's team, whom her daughter Francesca is the vice captain, and the thrill of hosting a game at Pittodrie with the promise of more to come this season, and why the club (along with 16 other SWPL1 & 2 clubs) took the decision to switch governing bodies from SWF to SPFL. We then round off with slow fire questions, including a combined Aberdeen Men's and Women's six aside team.

S12E10 SWNT Roundup & SWPL1 Review So Far09 Sep 202200:56:20

On the eve of Scotland Women's National Team finding out their World Cup playoff fate, John B & Vinny are joined by Dave Smith to review their recent matches. First up, an away trip to Netherlands proved to be a useful exercise as Scotland gave a good account of themselves before going down 2-1 to the FIFA ranked sixth best side in Women's Football. This was followed up by a resounding 6-0 win in Faroe Islands to wrap up their qualifying group, where second place was long wrapped up.

The lads then discuss Scotland's potential playoff opponents as we will have to face two one-off ties on 6 & 11 October. Even then winning both matches might not be enough to secure qualification as only the two best playoff winners, combined with their qualifying campaign record, will advance to the Finals in Australia and New Zealand, with the third playoff winner going into a ten team tournament in New Zealand in February to fight for one of the three remaining Finals spots. It's all broken down by this link...

https://www.uefa.com/womensworldcup/news/0268-1215b5f47763-e5f6d59d5df2-1000--play-off-draw-friday/

We then discuss the SWPL1 season so far and what teams have surprised us the most, both in an overachieving and underachieving aspect, and give our predictions for the weekend games. We also give credit to Rangers for moving their Women's Champions League qualifier against Benfica to Ibrox, and predict a few crowd records will be broken across SWPL1 this season.

Let's hope Scotland get a kind draw in the playoffs, two home ties would be nice!

S12E8 Guest Special: Jim Delahunt25 Aug 202201:04:42

In our latest guest special, John B and Vinny are joined by former Scotsport, Setanta and Clyde Superscoreboard presenter, and current Scottish Sun columnist, Jim Delahunt. Jim gives a great insight into his career that saw him start off at the Sunday Standard before joining STV in 1990. He succeeded Jim White as Scotsport presenter in 1998 and was there for eight years before joining Setanta Sports, fronting their highlights show for three years before the channels sudden closure. He then moved to Clyde a year later for five years and explains why the dump button was his most valuable tool at the station.

Jim also delves into his passion for Horse Racing and his success as an owner in having ten winners, giving his favourite courses in Scotland and one abroad. We end with the usual slow fire questions where Jim's six a-side team is one player short - and why he'd rather have five players than add Jim White! We thank Jim for his time to speak to the Podcast.

S13E64 Euro 2024 Preview: The Rivals07 Jun 202401:14:35

It's another Euro 2024 special but we're going to deviate away from Scotland and put the focus on our Group A rivals Germany, Switzerland and Hungary. John Bleasdale spoke to Jorg Jakob, Editor of German Football Magazine KickerLucas Werder from Swiss publication Blick Sport, and Aaron Aranyossy of Hungarian online newspaper 24.hu.

Lucas and Aaron reflect on their nations respective routes to the finals whilst Jorg explains how the Germans went from looking like a poor side in 2023 to being dark horses again following an upturn in results under Julien Nagelsmann. We then look ahead to the three games, how many Swiss and Hungarian fans are expected in Germany, and what we can expect from the hosts. The guys then give their favourite moments following their national teams and what their favourite kits are from years gone by.

S11E74 Ukraine v SWNT Preview17 Jun 202200:32:22

The Men's National Team's World Cup dream may be over, but the Scotland Women's side hopes of reaching their finals in Australia and New Zealand next year is still very much alive. In this episode, John B is joined by Chris Marshall and Amy Canavan to preview their latest qualifier against Ukraine which, due to the ongoing atrocities in their homeland, is being played in Poland.

We look back at what's been a mixed campaign for the SWNT under new manager Pedro Martinez Losa. After kicking off with three consecutive wins, Losa's side required a 93rd minute equaliser from Abi Harrison to spare their blushes against the Ukrainians at Hampden, before being thrashed by runaway Group B leaders Spain. The Spaniards then completed the double over the Scots to clinch qualification, but Scotland still have a playoff spot in their hands if they can win next Friday and against Faroe Islands in September.

Chris and Amy give their thoughts on the opposition and try to predict the lineup Scotland will send out that will, hopefully, see us come away with three vital points and one foot in the playoffs.

We discuss the Nations League group so far with mixed results for everyone with exception of Ukraine. Aram gives us an insight in to the Armenian team and what to expect in the reverse fixture of last Wednesday.

The fallout from Scotland's defeat in Ireland is discussed with there being disappointment all round from Scotland fans. The focus is around the expectation going in to the game that we looked to be favourites for but didn't turn up.

Aram talks about the progression of Armenian national team and how football is growing in Armenia with new investment.

We finish off by making some predictions around the game on Tuesday.
