| Can Science Point to God? Douglas Ell on Atheism, Faith & the Evidence for a Creator | Science 101 | 01 oct. 2026 | 00:28:04 | |
Science 101 features Douglas Ell, an MIT graduate, mathematician, author, and former atheist who has spent decades examining one of humanity’s most enduring questions: Can science and belief in God coexist?
In this thought-provoking episode, Douglas shares his personal journey from atheism to faith. As a young student with a strong aptitude for mathematics and science, he came to view scientific explanations as being in conflict with the idea of a creator. He discusses how his understanding evolved over time and why a profound personal experience after the birth of his son motivated him to investigate the question for himself.
Douglas explains how his search developed into a decades-long effort to reconcile science, mathematics, the origins of life, the universe, and belief in God. He also discusses his interpretation of scientific evidence and why he believes certain discoveries point toward a creator.
The conversation explores ideas Douglas has presented in his books, including Counting to God, which he discussed in a lecture at MIT, and The God Proofs, a graphic-format book designed to introduce younger readers to his arguments about science and God.
Rather than treating science and faith as automatically incompatible, this episode examines the arguments at their intersection while distinguishing scientific findings from philosophical and theological interpretations of those findings.

| Carrying the Environment With Us: How Humans Could Survive Beyond Earth | Science 101 | 20 sept. 2026 | 00:25:10 | |
In its third season, Science 101 features “Carrying the Environment With Us,” a fascinating exploration of one of humanity’s greatest challenges: how can humans survive and thrive beyond Earth when our bodies evolved specifically for life on this planet?
From spacecraft and space stations to future settlements on the Moon, Mars, and potentially worlds far beyond our solar system, humans cannot simply leave Earth behind. We must recreate many of the conditions that keep us alive, including breathable air, appropriate atmospheric pressure, water, food, temperature control, radiation protection, gravity considerations, and functioning biological ecosystems.
This episode explores how life-support systems, closed-loop habitats, artificial environments, biotechnology, and human adaptation could shape the future of space exploration. Rather than immediately changing the human body to survive hostile environments, humanity has largely taken another approach: changing the environment around us to support the human body.
But what happens when our technology becomes capable of changing both? Could future humans become biologically adapted to environments beyond Earth? And if our habitats evolve alongside our bodies, at what point would humanity truly leave the terrestrial human condition behind?
Join Science 101 for a thought-provoking journey into space biology, human evolution, environmental engineering, and the science of carrying a piece of Earth wherever humanity goes next. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

| Voyager’s Discovery of the 90,000°F Edge of Our Solar System | 14 sept. 2026 | 00:21:20 | |
Science 101, now in its third season, features Voyager and the 90,000°F Edge of Our Solar Bubble, an extraordinary journey to the distant frontier where the Sun’s influence meets interstellar space. NASA’s Voyager spacecraft have traveled farther from Earth than any other human-made objects, sending back groundbreaking measurements from the outer boundary of the heliosphere, the vast protective bubble created by the solar wind.
In this episode, we explore reports of temperatures reaching approximately 90,000°F near this turbulent boundary and explain why the Voyager probes do not melt despite the extreme heat. Although individual particles possess enormous energy, the region is so thin and sparsely populated that there is very little matter available to transfer heat to the spacecraft. We also examine the heliopause, the pressure of interstellar space, and what Voyager’s discoveries reveal about the invisible forces surrounding our solar system. It is a fascinating story of extreme physics, pioneering engineering, and humanity’s first direct exploration beyond the solar bubble. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | The Complete Story of Evolution: From LUCA and the First Cells to Plants, Animals, and the Rise of Human Life on Earth | 08 sept. 2026 | 00:27:42
When most people think about evolution, they often focus on only one small part of the story, such as humans evolving from earlier primates. But to understand evolution in its fullest sense, we need to examine the entire journey, beginning with the chemistry that made life possible and continuing through billions of years of biological change.
To understand how human beings eventually emerged, we must begin with cells. Human cells divide under carefully regulated conditions, but different types of cells divide at different rates. The human body maintains an average internal temperature of approximately 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, creating an environment in which our cells and biological systems can function properly. However, producing a human being required far more than repeated cell division. It required billions of years of evolution, environmental change, natural selection, and increasing biological complexity.
Scientists trace all life living today back to what is known as LUCA, the Last Universal Common Ancestor. LUCA was not the first molecule or necessarily the first living organism. It represents an ancient organism or population from which bacteria, archaea, plants, fungi, animals, and every other form of life eventually descended. Long before LUCA, simpler molecules participated in chemical processes that may have contributed to the development of RNA, DNA, proteins, cell membranes, and the earliest forms of life.
Scientists have also detected organic compounds associated with the chemistry of life in samples collected from asteroids. These discoveries do not prove that life arrived on Earth from space, but they suggest that some of life’s chemical ingredients may be common throughout the universe. Wherever liquid water, suitable temperatures, energy sources, and the necessary chemistry exist, some of the conditions associated with life may also be present.
For billions of years, microscopic organisms dominated Earth. They obtained energy from chemicals, sunlight, and other organisms while gradually transforming the planet. Some developed photosynthesis and released oxygen, dramatically changing Earth’s atmosphere. Later, more complex cells emerged, followed by multicellular organisms.
Plants, fungi, and animals did not develop by simply splitting from one original fungus. Instead, they emerged along separate branches of the evolutionary tree from earlier single celled ancestors. Plant life gradually transformed the land, while animals diversified primarily in the oceans before some species eventually moved onto land. Forests, marine ecosystems, and complex food chains developed over immense periods of time, creating environments capable of supporting increasingly diverse forms of life.
The path from ancient microbes to human beings took approximately four billion years. It involved countless evolutionary branches, environmental changes, extinctions, adaptations, and moments of biological innovation. Looking at this larger picture reminds us that human evolution is not an isolated event. We are one recent branch of an extraordinary story that connects every living organism on Earth. | The Universe We See Is Already Gone: Are We Looking Into the Cosmic Past? | Science 101 | 28 août 2026 | 00:22:52
Science 101, now in its third season, ventures into one of the most mind-bending ideas in modern cosmology with “The Universe We See Is Already Gone.” Because light takes time to travel across the immense distances of space, every star, galaxy, and cosmic object we observe appears not as it exists today, but as it existed sometime in the past. The farther into space we look, the farther back in time we are seeing. Some of the stars illuminating our night sky may have already changed dramatically—or even ceased to exist—while their ancient light continues traveling toward Earth. This episode explores the speed of light, cosmic distances, lookback time, the observable universe, and how telescopes effectively allow scientists to peer into cosmic history. | Science 101, in its third season, features Mark Christensen in a thought-provoking exploration of the concept of the Human Spore. | 01 mars 2026 | 00:32:13
In this intellectually charged episode, we examine the metaphor—and potential biological parallels—behind the idea of humans as carriers of consciousness, adaptation, and survival across environments. What if the “spore” framework is less about microbiology and more about evolutionary resilience? Drawing from cellular biology, environmental science, and systems thinking, this conversation explores how life propagates, survives hostile conditions, and re-emerges stronger—whether in nature or within human civilizations. Mark Christensen unpacks how the spore analogy can be used to understand human adaptability, innovation under pressure, and even long-term species survival. Are we biologically fragile—or evolutionarily engineered for endurance? This episode challenges listeners to think beyond conventional narratives and consider humanity not merely as a species, but as a dynamic, self-replicating system designed for persistence. | (Bonus Episode) Evolve Your Brain by Joe Dispenza explores how thoughts, emotions, and habits physically shape the brain. | 06 févr. 2026 | 00:02:33
Evolve Your Brain by Joe Dispenza is a deep exploration of how the human brain is constantly shaped—and reshaped—by thought, emotion, experience, and intention. Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, quantum physics, and mindfulness practices, the book explains how habitual thinking and emotional patterns create fixed neural networks that keep people locked into familiar behaviors, identities, and limitations. Dispenza argues that by becoming consciously aware of these patterns and intentionally choosing new ways of thinking and feeling, individuals can rewire their brains, transcend automatic reactions, and move beyond past conditioning. Through scientific explanations and reflective insights, the book bridges the gap between biology and personal transformation, showing how sustained mental focus, attention, and emotional regulation can lead to measurable changes in brain structure and function. Evolve Your Brainultimately presents a compelling case that lasting change is not a matter of willpower alone, but of understanding how the brain learns—and deliberately teaching it something new. | Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, features Douglas William Ell as my guest. | 01 janv. 2026 | 00:28:23
Doug Ell Science AND Faith Author Douglas Ell, a former atheist, says “I’ve spent more than 30 years reconciling science and God, because I needed scientific evidence to believe in God.” In our time, the pursuit of scientific and philosophical knowledge has largely been the domain of narrowly focused professionals and academics. Ell’s work represents a return to the more open-minded, broad thinking of the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution, when intelligent people of diverse backgrounds exchanged information not to further professional careers, but as part of a collective effort to advance science and reason. Douglas Ell grew up in Connecticut, and graduated early from MIT, where he double majored in math and physics. He then obtained a masters in theoretical mathematics from the University of Maryland. After graduating from law school, magna cum laude, he became a prominent attorney. Ell drafted the first 401(k) plan in professional sports and has represented a number of nationally recognized corporations, unions and pension plans. He has litigated nationally with great success and persuaded Congress to make important changes in employee benefits laws. As a lawyer Ell learned how to sift through competing arguments and the importance of carefully considering different points of view, skills which he has now used to untangle the confused and often emotional relationship between science and religion. His legal training and work, combined with his academic science background and a lifetime of independent study, has given him a uniquely grounded approach to science, religion, and philosophy. Dalton Sizemore Biology with Heart, Humor, and a Drawl I’m Dalton — a molecular biologist, science communicator, and caregiver. I hold a BS and MS in Cell and Molecular Biology from Appalachian State University, where I focused on cancer biology, virology, and immunology. My research explored how viruses like VSV might be used to disrupt the immune processes that help cancer metastasize. I also hold a graduate certificate in clinical psychology, which helps me bridge the gap between the science of the body and the realities of the human experience. But the truth is, everything I’ve done in science is rooted in something far more personal. I’m a survivor of childhood abuse. My father left when I was young, and my mother — who raised me on her own — endured two severely abusive relationships: one during my childhood, and another while I was in high school and starting college. Those years shaped me deeply. They taught me what it means to live in chaos and still push forward, to carry pain and still protect others, and to learn, even when nothing in your life feels safe.
