Warehouse Robotics and Automation Safety - Week One

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) – Staying Safe Around Automation

With more robots entering our warehouse floors, we must stay vigilant about safe interactions between humans and machines. Robots are a valuable asset for productivity, but we must take safety seriously whenever we're near automated equipment, like palletizers and de-palletizers.

We all play a role in keeping things safe. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with safety standards and protocols at your location—especially those involving human-machine interaction.
  • Stay Aware: Only partially rely on sensors to detect human presence. Sensors are an added layer, but they need to be foolproof.
  • Check Safety Features: If any safety features malfunction, report them to your supervisor immediately.
  • Never Bypass Safety Devices: If a machine jams, notify maintenance and safety; don't attempt a DIY fix.
  • Stay Alert to Your Environment: Regularly remind yourself of protocols and safety zones around automated equipment.
As always - be sure to follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility.

Human-robot interaction can be safe and productive if we all stay aware, informed, and follow established procedures.

Hidden Benefits of Vehicle Safety

Vehicle accidents, particularly those occurring off the job, are a leading cause of injury and death for industrial workers. While workplace safety is often the focus, the impact of vehicle safety extends far beyond the factory floor. Let's explore how preventing auto accidents can significantly benefit workers and employers.

Reduced Injuries and Fatalities

The most obvious benefit is the direct reduction in injuries and fatalities. Whether commuting or involved in off-site activities, fewer accidents mean a healthier, safer workforce.

Increased Productivity

Auto accidents can lead to missed workdays due to injury or trauma. We can minimize absenteeism and maintain higher productivity levels by reducing these incidents.

Lower Healthcare Costs

Fewer accidents translate to reduced medical expenses for both workers and employers. These lowered healthcare costs can lead to better resource allocation and lower insurance premiums.

Improved Morale

A commitment to safety, including off-the-job vehicle safety, contributes to higher morale among workers. This enhanced job satisfaction can create a more positive workplace atmosphere.

By addressing key risk factors such as distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and not using seat belts, we can create a safer environment for industrial workers both on and off the job. The benefits extend beyond individual safety, impacting productivity, costs, and overall workplace satisfaction.

Safety Walk-Throughs

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of safety walk-throughs.

So - stay tuned.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener, this podcast will be different from most you listen to.  It's based on exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Ensuring Workplace Safety and Compliance With Regular Safety Walk-Throughs

We've been covering Essential PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the last several weeks. And as crucial as that subject is - this week we're going to cover something that everyone from staff to upper management and everyone in between can do - safety walk-throughs.

A safety walk-through aims to proactively identify risks and take corrective actions before an accident or injury occurs.

When you think of a safety walk-through - you might think of one or more people with clipboards meticulously inspecting every square inch of a facility. That can be the case, but making a habit out of looking for potential issues and ways to improve should be a constant habit to adopt.

During a safety walk-through, the inspector or the team may look for hazards such as:

  1. Electrical Hazards: Check for frayed or damaged electrical cords, improperly grounded equipment, and exposed electrical wires.
  2. Fire Hazards: Ensure that there are no obstructions in front of fire extinguishers, check that smoke detectors and alarms are working, and confirm that emergency exits are marked and unobstructed.
  3. Slip and Fall Hazards: Look for wet or slippery floors, uneven surfaces, and objects that could cause tripping.
  4. Chemical Hazards: Check that all hazardous chemicals are properly labeled and stored in designated areas. Ensure workers have access to the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with chemicals.
  5. Equipment Safety: Inspect all machinery and equipment to ensure that they are in proper working condition and that all safety guards and features are intact and functional.
  6. Lighting: Ensure that all facility areas are well-lit to prevent accidents and reduce the risk of eyestrain and fatigue.
  7. Housekeeping: Check that all areas of the facility are clean and free of clutter, debris, and other materials that could pose a hazard.
  8. First Aid Kits: Verify that all kits are fully stocked and accessible.
  9. Ergonomic Hazards: Look for ergonomic hazards such as poorly designed workstations and inadequate seating, which can cause musculoskeletal disorders.
  10. Compliance with Safety Regulations: Confirm that the facility complies with all applicable safety regulations, including OSHA.

The inspector may also review safety procedures, emergency response plans, and workers' training to ensure they are up-to-date and effective.

Performing a safety walk-through is crucial in ensuring your workplace is safe and compliant with all applicable regulations. By checking the above items during a safety walk-through, you can identify potential hazards and take corrective actions before an accident or injury occurs.

Why Safety Clothing Is Essential PPE

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of wearing safety clothing.

So - stay tuned.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Why Safety Clothing Is Essential PPE

There is more PPE we could cover, but we've done our best to hit on the primary items. Over the last several weeks, we've covered footwear, gloves, eyewear, ear protection, hard hats, and harnesses. Today we will wrap up (No pun intended) with safety clothing.

Safety clothing is critical to personal protective equipment (PPE) in factories and warehouses. These work environments often involve dangerous materials and machinery that can severely threaten workers' health and safety. Therefore, selecting appropriate clothing material and providing sufficient visibility is crucial to ensure maximum protection.

Using high-visibility fabric in safety clothing, such as reflective vests, jackets, and pants, can help workers stand out in low-light conditions, making them visible to their co-workers and machinery operators.

The choice of fabric is also essential. Safety clothing is dependent upon the activity that's performed. In an area where getting wet is likely, the material might be as simple as raingear. Other activities require durable materials that can withstand hazardous substances and protect workers from cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and chemical exposure. For example, Kevlar and other high-strength materials can prevent scratches and abrasions from sharp tools or machinery. Your safety clothing could range from something simple as a uniform to an all-out Hazmat Suit.

In addition to protecting workers, safety clothing also significantly prevents accidents and injuries that may lead to costly medical bills, lost productivity, and lawsuits. Employers should prioritize providing their workers with high-quality safety clothing to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

If you wear what OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recommends, what your facility requires, and what you know will protect you while performing your duties - you'll be on the positive side of safety, and that's precisely where we want you to be!

Why Safety Harnesses Are Essential PPE

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of wearing safety harnesses.

So - stay tuned.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Why Safety Harnesses Are Essential PPE

Over the last several weeks, we've covered several types of essential personal protective equipment (PPE). So far, we've covered footwear, gloves, eyewear, ear protection, and hard hats - and today, we're talking about the importance of wearing safety harnesses.

Even though this podcast speaks to warehouse and factory-type settings - any facility where harnesses or other PPE could assist staff in remaining safe is applicable.

Safety harnesses can significantly reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities resulting from falls.

Here are just a few examples of when safety harnesses should be required:

  • Working on elevated platforms or scaffolding
  • Climbing ladders or towers
  • Working near open edges or roofs
  • Operating cranes or other heavy machinery at a height
  • Conducting repairs or maintenance on tall structures or equipment
  • Performing tasks on rooftops, such as installing or repairing HVAC systems
  • Working in mining or construction environments
  • Performing window washing or building cleaning tasks at a height
  • Working in telecommunications or utility industries, such as installing or fixing power lines
  • Performing tree trimming or arborist work at height.
These harnesses can differentiate life and death for workers who regularly work at height.

Safety harnesses are often required by law and vital to workplace safety regulations. Failure to provide safety harnesses or to enforce their use can result in significant legal and financial consequences for employers.

It's yet another layer of PPE that helps ensure your facility and staff stay accident-free - and that's precisely why we talk about it.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Why Hard Hats Are Essential PPE

Today on Warehouse Safety Tips - we're continuing our series on Essential PPE. We've covered PPE related to feet, hands, ears, and eyes, and now we will discuss protecting your head. The hard hat is one of the most crucial pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) for this.

Workers in factories and warehouses often face head injury hazards such as falling objects, flying debris, bumps or knocks from equipment, and electrical hazards. Wearing a hard hat can significantly reduce the risk of severe or fatal injuries and provide protection.

Hard hats are a helmet designed to protect the head from impact and penetration hazards. It consists of a rigid shell made of materials such as plastic, fiberglass, or metal, with a suspension system inside that helps absorb and distribute the force of an impact. Staff can add accessories such as visors, earmuffs, and face shields can also be added for additional protection.

Much like gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, hard hats can get hot, uncomfortable, or get in the way of your actions. However, it's paramount that you don't remove them while in an area or job requiring them to be worn. Even though accidents can occur at any time, in the moments you have a slight error in judgment, they catch you off guard.

Wearing your hard hat will help keep your head and brain protected, assist in your facilities' safety goals, and significantly increase your chances of returning home safely each night.

Why Hearing Protection Is An Essential PPE

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of Hearing Protection.

So - stay tuned.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Why Hearing Protection Is An Essential PPE

In industrial settings such as factories and warehouses, exposure to high noise levels is a common occupational hazard. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can cause irreversible hearing damage, hearing loss, and other related health problems.

Hearing protection is a must for employers as part of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program.

Hearing protection devices (HPDs) such as earplugs, earmuffs, and noise-canceling headphones can reduce noise exposure to a safe level - minimizing the risk of hearing damage. Regulations set forth by agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States suggest and enforce the use of HPDs.

Not only is hearing protection essential for protecting workers' health, but it can also improve overall productivity and safety in the workplace. Excessive noise can impair communication and concentration, making it difficult for workers to perform their tasks safely and efficiently. By reducing noise levels, hearing protection can help workers focus on their jobs, improving overall job performance and safety.

As with all PPE and safety procedures - proper training of all staff members and unwavering adherence to that training is paramount to its success.

We said it last week, and it'll be just as true down the road - "Safety can't exist where safety isn't observed!"

Why Safety Gloves Are Essential PPE

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is crucial in any workplace where employees are exposed to hazards that may cause injury or illness. Over the last few podcasts, we've mentioned that everyone thinks of PPE as masks and safety glasses - but gloves are also a vital component of PPE.

Always find out what your specific facility/position requires - but here are a few examples of Glove Safety to get you started.

In warehouses, factories, and facilities where workers handle hazardous materials, operate machinery, or need general protection - gloves protect workers' hands from cuts, punctures, abrasions, chemical exposure, and much more. The gloves needed for this could be made of materials ranging from cotton, leather, Kevlar, or steel mesh to prevent injuries.

We mentioned chemical exposure protection (This would also include biological agents). In those cases - gloves could be made of chemical-resistant materials such as nitrile, neoprene, or PVC (They should also be chosen based on the specific hazards of the workplace, such as acids, solvents, or oils).

In positions such as food processing, pharmaceutical work, or dealing with the public - where cross-contamination might be prevalent - staff might need latex gloves that are thrown away after one use to ensure product quality and safety.

It is important to note that gloves are not a substitute for proper hand hygiene. Workers must wash their hands before and after wearing gloves to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.

And we don't want to sound like a broken record - but the best way to increase your odds of not sustaining an injury, causing contamination, or becoming exposed - is keeping gloves on at all times. PPE can be uncomfortable or make a task more difficult to perform - but if you're required to wear it, there's probably a good reason. Don't be the person that says, "I've removed my gloves a hundred times before, and nothing happened - until today!"

Simply put - safety can't exist where safety isn't observed!

Why Safety Footwear is Essential PPE

In factories and warehouses, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of workers. While many people might think of hard hats and safety goggles as the most critical forms of PPE, proper footwear gets overlooked.

Wearing the right shoes can prevent slips, trips, and falls, among the most common causes of workplace injuries. In fact, slips, trips, and falls account for a significant percentage of workplace accidents every year. Proper footwear can also protect workers from puncture wounds, electrical hazards, and other types of injuries in these environments.

When choosing footwear for a warehouse or factory, it's essential to consider the specific hazards present in the workplace. For example, workers potentially exposed to chemicals should wear shoes resistant to chemical spills. Those who work with heavy machinery or equipment should wear steel-toed boots to protect their feet from crushing injuries. And workers who are on their feet for long periods should choose shoes with good arch support and cushioning to reduce the risk of foot and back pain.

Proper footwear is an essential component of PPE in factories and warehouses. Employers should provide their workers with clear guidance on what shoes are appropriate for the job, and workers should take the time to choose footwear that will keep them safe and comfortable on the job. Making footwear a safety priority can help prevent workplace injuries and keep workers healthy and productive.

Why Safety Glasses Are Essential PPE

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the importance of wearing safety glasses.

So - stay tuned.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Why Safety Glasses Are Essential PPE

Wearing safety glasses is crucial when working in a warehouse or factory environment. There are several potential hazards that can cause eye injuries, such as flying debris, chemicals, dust, and other particles.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), about 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces every day, resulting in an estimated $300 million in medical expenses, lost work time, and worker compensation. Furthermore, OSHA reports that 90% of these eye injuries could have been prevented with proper eye protection, such as safety glasses. These statistics highlight the importance of taking workplace eye safety seriously and implementing proper safety measures, including providing and requiring the use of appropriate eye protection.

Eye injuries can range from minor irritations to permanent vision loss, and they can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. In addition to the personal cost, eye injuries also result in lost work time and decreased productivity.  So wearing safety glasses can help prevent these types of injuries.

It's important to choose the right type of safety glasses for the job, as different tasks require different levels of protection. For example, tasks involving welding or cutting may require a different type of safety glasses than tasks involving chemicals.  Be sure to check with your individual facility to find out what safety glasses or eye protection they require.

Overall, safety should always be a top priority.  Wearing safety glasses is a simple yet effective way to protect your eyes and prevent injuries in the workplace. By prioritizing safety and taking the necessary precautions, workers can stay healthy and productive while on the job.

S4 Ep170: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 170 | Why Is A Workstation Check Important For Lean Manufacturing?15 Mar 202300:08:11
Why Is A Workstation Check Important For Lean Manufacturing?

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about why workstation checks are important for Lean Manufacturing.

Why Is A Workstation Check Important For Lean Manufacturing?

A workstation check is an important part of lean manufacturing because it reduces waste, streamlines processes, and enhances safety - which you KNOW we're all about.

  • Reducing Waste: By identifying the causes of waste in your warehouse and taking steps to eliminate them, you can reduce costs while improving productivity. For example, if a worker spends too much time walking from one area of their workspace to another because tools or materials are spread out across several different locations on the floor (which is often referred to as "motion"), then this could be considered a form of wasted motion that should be addressed during a workstation check.

And if you need a refresher on it - Lean manufacturing is a systematic approach to reducing waste, improving productivity, and quality control. It focuses on eliminating activities that do not add value for customers. This can be done by reducing inventory levels, minimizing transportation costs, and using equipment only when needed.

Lean manufacturing has many benefits, including (But not limited to):

  • Improved efficiency through reduced lead times
  • Reduced inventory costs
  • Increased flexibility

What Should be Included in a Workstation Check?

A workstation check is a process that involves inspecting the equipment and environment at your warehouse or facility. Doing this is important because it helps you identify areas where improvements can be made. If you want to improve your lean manufacturing process, it's important to look at every aspect of it, including how workers use their workstations.

A good way to start a workstation check is by ensuring that all of your equipment is in good working order before beginning any tasks on it. This includes checking things like motors and belts and inspecting tools like saw blades or drill bits for damage or wear-and-tear from previous use (or misuse). You should also test machines periodically throughout each shift so that if something does break down unexpectedly during peak production times, there will be enough time for maintenance staff members, such as electricians or mechanics, to address the situation.

How to Implement a Workstation Check?

  • Create a checklist. A workstation check checklist is a great way to ensure you follow the right steps when performing your checks. It can also be used as a training tool for new employees or as a reference point if you find yourself forgetting any of the steps in the future.
  • Train employees on using it correctly and consistently so they don't miss anything important during their inspections.
  • Follow procedures exactly as written in order for them to be effective at catching defects before they become too big of an issue--and more costly than necessary!
How to Monitor Workstation Checks?

Warehouse workers need to do a workstation check on a regular basis to ensure that their workstations are set up correctly and that they are using the right tools for the job. In order to monitor this process, warehouse managers can use checklists or other forms of tracking systems. They can also use technology such as barcode scanners or RFID tags in order to track what items each employee has in their possession at any given time.

When analyzing data collected through these methods, warehouse managers should look out for trends in how often certain items are used by different people or groups within their facility--this will help them determine whether there is anything they can do to improve efficiency by changing things like workflow patterns or equipment usage patterns

What are the Benefits of Workstation Checks?

Workstation checks are a great way to improve efficiency and quality in the workplace. They also help reduce risk, which is important for any organization.

  • Increased Efficiency: Workstations should be set up in a way that allows employees to do their jobs quickly and easily. By checking your workstations regularly, you can identify any issues that might slow down your team member's performance on the job. For example, if an employee has trouble reaching something because it's too high or too low on their desk space, you'll know immediately when they report back with an issue like this--and then you can make changes accordingly!
What are the Pitfalls of Not Doing Workstation Checks?

If you don't do workstation checks, your warehouse workers could waste time and money. Here are some of the pitfalls of not doing workstation checks:

  • Decreasing Productivity
If your employees aren't using their tools correctly, they may be slowing down their own productivity by spending too much time on tasks or making more mistakes than necessary. This can lead to frustration or burnout if it goes on too long. It also means that other workers have to pick up the slack, which means there's less time available to do their jobs well!
  • Increasing Errors
When people use tools incorrectly, they're more likely to make mistakes when performing their duties (and therefore create waste). For example: If a forklift operator doesn't know how much weight their machine can hold before becoming overloaded (or if they don't check), then they could accidentally overload it and cause damage that costs thousands of dollars in repairs--not only costing money but also potentially putting other people at risk as well!

How to Utilize Lean Manufacturing to Improve Workstation Checks?

To maximize the effectiveness of your workstation checks, you should consider the following:

  • Minimize waste. Waste is anything that does not add value to a product or service. It can be physical or mental, but it's all bad for your company. For example, if you have a warehouse worker who spends an hour each day walking back and forth between their office and their work area because they don't want to take the time out of their busy day (or even worse--they don't know where everything is located), this is considered waste because they are taking up valuable time that could be used elsewhere in helping customers or improving processes within your facility.
  • Automate processes where possible so that human error isn't introduced into them during manual execution by workers on the floor.  These team members may not know what they're doing anyway due to a lack of training/experience with certain tasks such as inventory management software programs like WMS (Warehouse Management System) software platforms used by retailers, which allows them access to all kinds of information about products being stored within its facilities including how much inventory each item has left before needing restocking orders placed so no customer goes without buying something from these stores ever again!
How to Get Started With Lean Manufacturing Workstation Checks?

  • Assess the environment.
  • Implement processes.
  • Train employees.
Conclusion

As you can see, there are many benefits to doing a workstation check. In addition to improving safety and efficiency, it helps you maintain the highest quality standards. However, the most important thing is that it allows you to identify problems before they become bigger.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Horseplay and Workplace Accidents: The High Cost of Ignoring Safety

Workplace safety should always be a top priority for any organization. Unfortunately, some employees may engage in horseplay, which can put themselves and others at risk of injury. Horseplay can be defined as any activity that is done in jest or playfully that can potentially cause harm or injury. Examples of horseplay can include roughhousing, pushing, and pranks.

While horseplay may seem harmless and fun at first, it can lead to serious accidents and injuries. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, horseplay is a contributing factor in over 2.5 million workplace injuries each year. These injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to more serious injuries like broken bones, concussions, and even fatalities.

In addition to the physical harm caused by workplace accidents, there are also financial costs to consider. Workplace injuries can result in lost workdays, medical expenses, and increased insurance premiums. These costs can add up quickly and have a significant impact on the financial health of a business.

Furthermore, workplace accidents can also lead to legal consequences. Employers have a legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for their employees, and failure to do so can result in lawsuits and fines.

To prevent horseplay and promote workplace safety, employers can take several measures. First and foremost, they should establish clear rules and policies regarding acceptable behavior in the workplace. These policies should be communicated clearly to all employees and enforced consistently.

Employers can also provide regular safety training to their employees to ensure that they understand the risks associated with horseplay and other unsafe behaviors. By educating their employees, employers can empower them to make safe choices in the workplace.

Finally, employers should encourage their employees to speak up if they see unsafe behavior or horseplay occurring in the workplace. This can create a culture of safety where employees feel comfortable reporting concerns and taking action to prevent accidents.

In conclusion, workplace safety should be a top priority for any organization. Horseplay may seem like harmless fun, but it can lead to serious accidents and injuries that can have a significant impact on the financial health of a business. By establishing clear rules and policies, providing regular safety training, and encouraging employees to speak up, employers can promote a culture of safety and prevent workplace accidents caused by horseplay.

Lifting Techniques and PPE for Workplace Safety

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about lifting techniques and PPE for workplace safety.

So - stay tuned.

Lifting Techniques and PPE for Workplace Safety

Do you have a job where you may have to lift or move heavy objects?  Proper lifting techniques are essential to prevent work-related injuries.

It's always important to know and follow the guidelines within your specific facility - but here are some great tips for lifting correctly in the workplace:

  • Plan and prepare: Before you lift anything, assess the load and plan the lifting process. Determine the weight of the object, its shape, and its size, and make sure you have a clear path to move it.  And if the load is too heavy or awkward to lift/move, seek assistance.
  • Ensure you have appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the lift/move.  This would include - but not be limited to:
    • Safety shoes: Proper footwear is essential when lifting heavy objects. Safety shoes with slip-resistant soles, steel-toe caps, and good ankle support can help prevent slips, trips, and falls and protect the feet from falling objects.
    • Back support belts: Back support belts or lumbar supports can help stabilize the lower back and reduce the risk of injury when lifting heavy loads. However, it is important to note that these belts should only be used as a supplement to proper lifting techniques and not as a substitute for them.
    • Gloves: Gloves can provide a better grip on objects and protect the hands from cuts, scrapes, and punctures.
    • Eye protection: If there is a risk of objects or debris flying into the eyes while lifting, workers should wear safety glasses or goggles to protect their eyes.
    • Hearing protection: If workers are lifting heavy objects in noisy environments, they should wear earplugs or earmuffs to protect their hearing.
    • High-visibility clothing: When working in areas with vehicular traffic or where visibility is low, high-visibility clothing can help make workers more visible and reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Maintain proper posture: Always keep your back straight, and your shoulders back when lifting. Bend at your knees and hips, not your waist, and keep your feet shoulder-width apart. Tighten your core muscles to stabilize your spine and maintain your balance.
  • Avoid sudden movements: Do not jerk or twist your body while lifting or carrying a load. Move slowly and smoothly, and avoid sudden movements that could cause injury.
  • Take breaks and rest: If you are lifting heavy objects regularly, it is important to take regular breaks to rest and stretch your muscles. Overexertion can lead to fatigue and injury, so be sure to pace yourself and take time to recover between lifts.
Injuries related to improper lifting/moving techniques result in the loss of millions of dollars and hours each year.

The safety and productivity you and your facility want are in your control!  So choose wisely!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Emergency Preparedness

Being woke up from a dead sleep to be told your basement is flooding, will wake you up faster than a cup of java.  I know this because it happened to yours truly this morning.  Bad storms were passing through - and I'd JUST gone downstairs to check the sump pump to make sure everything was OK.  IT was.  The pipes connected to it WERE NOT!

Now, what's usually a quiet place to film, record audio, and do other marketing activities have been taken over by fans, carpet shampoo machines, and chaos.

But within that chaos - the trains are still running.  Why?  That's what businesses and facilities have to do!

And what's the best way to do that?  Try to expect the unexpected via emergency preparedness.

Whether it's where to go in case of a tornado, what to do should someone get injured, or utilizing an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) for someone experiencing cardiac arrest - you need plans in place for how to handle unexpected situations.  Emergency preparedness does just that.

For the last several weeks - we've been covering 5S.  A major part of The 5S Methodology is a constant and never-ending improvement.  It's important to do walk-throughs to make sure everything in your facility is running correctly.  But it's equally important to imagine potential issues before they happen, and create emergency preparedness plans for those situations.  You can't be prepared for every situation that occurs - but for every pre-emptive plan you successfully put in place, that's just one less thing you have to worry about later.

Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

The 5S Methodology - Safety

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the secret "S" of the 5S Methodology - Safety.

The 5S Methodology - Safety

We're FINALLY here - the last portion of our coverage on The 5S Methodology!  Some people even refer to what we're covering today as The 6S Methodology.  But in speaking with Blaine J. Hoffman of The Safety Pro Podcast - we agree that our topic today is part of all the Ss of The 5S Methodology - as opposed to being its own individual S.  The S we're speaking of is safety.

Here's a quick wrap-up of what we've covered so far.
  • In Episode 159, we touched on the origins of 5S.
  • In Episode 160, we covered Sort.  As it applies to 5S, sorting involves going through your work areas and facility and determining what's essential and non-essential.
  • In Episode 161, we covered Straighten (AKA - Set In Order).  As it applies to 5S, straightening involves making everything essential quickly and efficiently accessible.  It also entails making sure items are organized by priority of use.
  • In Episode 162, we covered Shine.  As it applies to 5S, shining involves cleaning at regular and efficient intervals.  It also allows you to ensure everything in your workplace is operating correctly and efficiently.
  • In Episode 163, we covered Standardize.  As it applies to 5s, standardization is the organization of the first 3 Ss.  It takes sorting, setting in order, and shining - and puts systematic routines into place, ensuring all three are implemented most safely and efficiently.
  • In Episode 164, we covered Sustain.  When we spoke with Blaine J. Hoffman of The Safety Pro Podcast - this was his take on sustaining.  As it pertains to 5S, sustaining involves maintaining the improvements made in the previous four steps. We have an upcoming podcast with Blaine where he'll provide several examples of how "Sustain" can be implemented in a warehouse setting.  So stay tuned for that inaugural episode of Partners In Safety.
Separately and combined - each one of these Ss has safety as its foundation.  Why?  Because you start practicing safety from the moment you wake up to the moment you lay your head back on your pillow at the end of the day.  Safety has to be a constant!

After each episode of this revisiting of The 5S Methodology - we've done a recap of each S previously covered.  Whether it's covering a topic already mentioned or recapping as previously mentioned - we do it to drive home the mindsets that safety ALWAYS has to be top of mind.  The moment it's not is when accidents generally occur - and we don't want that to happen with you or within your facility.

When safety is combined with the constant and never-ending improvement of an ongoing 5S Methodology Program - morale, organization, productivity, and customer confidence generally go hand-in-hand!

The 5S Methodology - Sustain

On today's podcast, we'll be talking about the fifth "S" of the 5S Methodology - Sustain.

So - stay tuned.

The 5S Methodology - Sustain

Over the last couple of weeks - we've been taking a birdseye view of The 5S Methodology.

And that brings us to this week.  Today, we're covering the fifth "S", SUSTAIN.  As it pertains to 5S, sustaining is the practice of self-discipline by staff.  Last week when covering standardization - we stated it was the organization of the first 3 S's.  Sustaining adds another component to that organization by ensuring the 5S Methodology is strictly adhered to.  And most important to this is ensuring staff has a "Do Without Being Told" mentality.

When you follow this and the other 4 S's of the 5S Methodology - you internalize a mentality of constant and never-ending improvement of workplaces - and by association, entire facilities.  You'll notice we didn't say fifth and final S this week.  That's because, over the last several years, the 5S Methodology has grown into the 6S Methodology.  So, next week we'll be talking about what makes that sixth S: SAFETY.  So stay tuned!

Until then - thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

Have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

And just like that, we arrive at the next "S" - Shine.  As with all the components of 5S - it sounds simple.  But it goes beyond simply cleaning.  As it applies to 5S, shining involves cleaning at regular and efficient intervals.  In addition - it's examining what you're cleaning to ensure everything in your workplace is operating correctly and efficiently.  Doing this can alert the proper people at your facility about what needs to be addressed.  This could be everything from hearing an odd sound to seeing an oil leak.  The overall goal is to catch issues before they escalate.

Having a clean workplace makes things run smoothly, safely, and efficiently - and that's what we want to see in our facilities.

The 5S Methodology - Straighten

If you caught our podcast over the last two weeks, you'd know we started covering The 5S Methodology.

We covered the intro to 5S and the first "S" - Sort.  As it applies to 5S, sorting involves going through your work areas and facility and determining what's essential and non-essential.

This week, we will cover the next "S" - Straighten.  Straightening - as it pertains to 5S -  involves making everything essential quickly and efficiently accessible.  In addition – it allows for a system of always knowing where those essential items are, who’s using them, and where they go when no longer needed.  Another phrase for this step is, Set In Order.  So, in addition to what was mentioned above – it also entails making sure items are organized by priority of use.  Following this step allows you to keep your tools available to those that need them when they need them the most.

Next week, we'll discuss the next "S" of The 5S Methodology - Shine.

The 5S Methodology - Sort

It's very easy for areas to get cluttered.  Think about THAT (Maybe even THOSE) drawer, closet, or room where you put all your extra stuff.  Almost everyone has one.  Now imagine trying to be productive with clutter like that around.  It's very difficult to stay organized in a disorganized area.  That's where the first "S" of The 5S Methodology comes in.

The "S" we're talking about is Sort.

Sorting - as it applies to The 5S Methodology - is going through your work areas and facility and determining what's essential and non-essential.

Sounds simple. Much like everything in our lives - it's easy to do and not to do.  However, this simple streamlining allows you and your co-workers to perform tasks with the needed items.  Nothing else gets in the way.  And by doing so - enhances the potential of operating at a peak performance level.

Next week, we'll discuss the next "S" of The 5S Methodology - Straighten.

So - stay tuned.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

The 5S Methodology

Many of the topics we cover here on Warehouse Safety Tips get repeated after a while.  The reasons for this are simple.  There are only so many tips and procedures to share - and many of them bear repeating.

The 5S Methodology is one of those topics.

If you were to list things that would make a facility run as smoothly as possible - the following items would certainly be on it:

  • There's a place for everything - and everything is in its place.
  • Waste is kept to an absolute minimum.
  • Productivity is at its maximum.
  • Cleanliness is a top priority.
  • Safety is top of mind.
  • There's always room for improvement!
Even though you may not have known it - if you're facility has some or all of these items, it's probably implementing The 5S Methodology (6S - to include safety).

Henry Ford had a method around 1920 called "Can Do" - which stood for Cleaning up, Arranging, Neatness, Discipline, and Ongoing improvement. The 5S Methodology we know today was developed in Japan after a team from Toyota visited Ford in the 50s - and is widely considered to be the base component of Lean Manufacturing today.

The S's that make up the 5S Methodology are:

  • Sort (Seiri)

  • Straighten (Seiton)

S5 Ep245: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 245 | Worker Safety - Work Area Ventilation21 Aug 202400:03:19
Worker Safety - Work Area Ventilation

As someone who has worked in factories and warehouses, I know firsthand how crucial good air quality is in our workspaces.

Let's dive into some key strategies to keep your team breathing easy.

  1. Mix it up: Natural and mechanical ventilation both have their place. Windows and vents are great but remember to strategically place fans and AC units where needed.
  2. Stay on top of maintenance: Regular checks and filter changes aren't just busywork - they're the backbone of a healthy ventilation system.
  3. Listen to your team: Your workers are on the front lines, and their feedback on air quality is pure gold for identifying problem areas.
  4. Remember, one size doesn't fit all: What works in the office might not work on the production floor. Tailor your approach to each area's unique needs.
As always - be sure to follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility. This ensures that you're on the right track and your actions are contributing to a safe and compliant workplace.

By prioritizing good ventilation, you're not just ticking a box - you're creating a safer, more comfortable workplace for everyone.

Stay vigilant, and keep the air flowing!

Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until we meet next time - have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Make Safety A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

In today's podcast, we'll discuss why you should make safety a standard operating procedure.

Make Safety A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Have you ever heard the initials SOP?  It stands for Standard Operating Procedure.  An SOP is a physical and/or digital document that outlines every step that needs to be taken to perform a specific task.  If written correctly - someone that has never done the task should be able to follow the steps to complete it properly.  Implementing such procedures allows for tasks to be completed within quality standards.  In a perfect world - these should be living documents that are constantly updated and improved upon within 5S Methodology standards.

So how does safety integrate into this?  If the facility you're working in is safety-minded and utilizing SOPs, safety procedures are probably already written into your tasks.  If your facility isn't doing this - it needs to start!  In addition to training individuals how to do particular tasks - SOPs significantly increase quality control, efficiency, and profitability.  Things all facilities should be striving for!

We hope you join us next week for another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Today is the first episode of season four of our podcast!

Get A Grip On Safety

At the time of this episode, a major winter storm is gripping (No pun intended) a large portion of the country.  Certain Safety Topics get recycled several times throughout the year.  Our topic today is one of those - primarily because slips and falls account for hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and countless OSHA Violations.

As with most unsafe situations in the workplace – most of these situations could have been avoided.  That's why we talk about it over and over.

We've covered several situations in the past that lead to slips and falls - but today, we're going to discuss a specific product to prevent help prevent it.

That product is Anti-Slip Traction Tape - offered by one of our sponsors, Mighty Line.  Its diamond pattern surface provides extra traction and safety in even the hardest areas to navigate.

Almost every facility has areas notorious for being slick due to rain, ice, and snow.  Coupling a product like the TAC Anti-Slip Traction Tape with mats, regular maintenance, and safety training is a great way to prevent slips and falls.

All the information mentioned today is great - but keeping it front of mind is better!  Hopefully, bringing it to your attention throughout the year does that!

Thank you for being part of our 4th Year of Warehouse Safety Tips!  We'll see you next week with another great tip!

Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Celebrate Safety

In today's podcast, we'll discuss why you celebrate safety.

So - stay tuned.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Celebrate Safety

Today is an exciting day for Warehouse Safety Tips!  It's our 3rd Anniversary of bringing safety tips and information to you and your facility!

When it comes to this anniversary and celebrating safety - there are a lot of takeaways we'd like you to consider.

The first is consistency.  We've been fortunate to bring you this podcast for the last 156 weeks without fail.  Did situations arise that could have broken that streak?  Of course!  But when you commit to a weekly podcast - that's what you deliver.  Adherence to safety has to have the same sort of unwavering consistency.  You cannot take part in it when you feel like it.  It has to be front of mind at all times.

Next is repetition.  If you watch, read, or listen to our podcast and posts long enough - you're going to notice topics you've heard previously mentioned.  Even though new safety tips and procedures are constantly being created - some things will always be sound advice.  Keep this saying in mind.  "Repetition Is The Mother Of Skill."  It means - the longer you do something, the better you'll get at it.  Just make sure you apply it correctly.  You can do the wrong thing repeatedly as well.

Last - but certainly not least - is recognizing and celebrating safety.  I had an undercover job many years ago, examining and reporting to management.  Although I was supposed to report things like drug use, sabotage, and other harmful activities - I also reported positive activities I witnessed.  There were employees and contractors doing things above and beyond their duties that would have gone wholly unrecognized had I not reported it.  Having a "Days Since An Accident" Sign is good - but taking the time to reinforce good safety behaviors is better.  If you're management or a Safety Coordinator - take the time to regularly walk your facility in search of things being done correctly - and be sure to point it out.  Doing so not only allows for recognition - but also allows you to see things that can be improved upon.

As we embark on our 4th Year of bringing you safety tips - we hope you embrace safety in every facet of your day-to-day life!

We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Don't Assume Safety

In today's podcast, we'll discuss why you shouldn't assume safety.

Don't Assume Safety

I attended a college work co-op opportunity dinner with my son last night.  During the presentation, the speaker pointed out the differences in safety over the years.  In the past - they placed cages around manufacturing equipment.  Today - light curtains have replaced most of the cages.  When these beams are broken - the machinery they protect will immediately alarm, slow down, and/or shut down (Depending on what's been programmed).  Or at least they SHOULD.

Safety Protocols such as the above-mentioned light curtains are excellent - and it's likely they're trustworthy 99.99% of the time.  However - it's that margin of error we ALWAYS want you to keep front of mind.  Don't assume safety!

We've covered this before and will cover it again.  Attention to safety has to be 100%!  How often have you heard someone at a facility say, "We've done that a hundred times before, and nothing happened!"  Murphy's Law states, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."  We don't want you going about your day paranoid of danger.  Instead - we want you to perform your duties in a way that you know you've done everything possible to make your job and facility safe.

We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Stay Alert To Safety

In today's podcast, we'll discuss staying alert to safety.

Stay Alert To Safety

Have you ever seen a sign while driving that states, 'WAKE-UP! | Drive ALERT! | Arrive Alive'?  Statistics state that just south of 100 Million people drive while Sleep-Deprived EVERY day!  Doing so results in thousands of deaths and millions of accidents per year.  Where do the majority of ones that avoid accidents end up each day?  At work with you!  Sometimes it might BE you!  And that's what we're here to help you with today.

Staying alert can be accomplished in many ways - but here are a few great tips to get you started.

  • Get the required amount of sleep to function at peak performance daily.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Move as much as your job allows.
  • Keep your work area bright.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Stick to a healthy diet.
The ways to keep alert are less important than why you want to stay alert.  Much like the previous list, there are countless reasons why - but here are several to get your mind thinking about it.

  • Many workplaces (ESPECIALLY warehouses) have potential dangers lurking around every corner.  It's paramount to pay attention, stay alert, and keep your head on a swivel at all times.  You're in immediate danger when you remove PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) or forget to watch and listen to your surroundings.
  • Regardless of how big or small your job is - ALL duties come together as one.  So it's important to ensure your contribution is the best you can provide daily.
  • On the same concept of all jobs coming together as one - many times, one task must be completed before another can start.  So if you bring anything less than your A-Game, you might cause a chain reaction that affects your entire facility.
  • Issues caused by one or more individuals can affect the entire staff, customers, and shareholders via the bottom line.
  • The 'Days Since An Accident' Sign at your facility reflects how alert the staff is.
  • The cost of not paying attention / not being alert can be as simple as a reprimand or as severe as an injury or death.
Do your best to stay alert and bring the best you to work each day as possible - and safety should follow!

We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Loading Dock Safety

Have you ever been to or worked in a facility with loading docks?  It can be an absolute hive of activity!  Regardless of the number of docks a facility has - the safety guidelines will all be very similar.  Here are a few great tips to get you started.

  • Do daily inspections on docks.
  • Right from the start, we begin Loading Dock Safety the way we would all topics - training.  Be sure everyone knows all the rules and regulations surrounding interaction in and around the docks at your facility.
  • Please make sure every dock has its entry, overhead, barriers, and other spaces marked with signs and bright yellow paint or tape.
  • Ensure dock areas are brightly lit.
  • Before anyone or lift trucks enter a trailer, please ensure the locking device has been engaged, and the trailer has been inspected.  Be sure to document anything you find out of place.
  • Put down dock plates to make travel in and out of trailers safe and smooth.
  • Make sure lift truck operators can always see in front of their load when entering trailers - and that they obey all the rules and regulations of transporting materials.
  • Always stack and secure products to ensure it doesn't break or shift in transportation.
  • Please be aware of the space while operating within a trailer to make sure you don't damage the floor, walls, ceiling, or products.
Please follow any of the OSHA Guidelines or rules your facility has that weren't mentioned above.

As long as you pay attention, work within a reasonable pace, and follow all the guidelines listed above - working in and around docks should be safe.  And that's exactly what we want to hear!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Safety Is ALWAYS Required

Several years ago, a friend worked as a large home improvement chain manager.  It would be great if everyone at a facility got along, but that doesn't always happen.  He and another manager had an ongoing feud until it ended one afternoon.  How?  He was let go from his position because, in a hurried moment, he forgot to put on a safety harness.  Normally - this would have been a "Don't let it happen again!" moment.  But the person that witnessed him doing it was the manager he was feuding with.

There are numerous lessons to be had in this, but the ones we want you to remember most are these.
  • It's NEVER OK to not wear or remove your PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)!  Regardless of the situation - PPE and Safety Requirements are strictly enforced for a reason.
  • Losing a long-time job is devastating, but he could have lost his life.
As the title of this podcast says, safety is ALWAYS required!

Back Safety

In today's podcast, we'll discuss back safety.

And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Back Safety

I've been training for a 5K on Thanksgiving called The Turkey Trot.  Somewhere in my activities - I managed to aggravate my back to the point of experiencing very painful spasms. I just wanted to remind you that you only get one healthy back.  Once it's injured - it could affect you for the rest of your life.

If you are unfortunate enough to injure your back - you're not alone.  There are close to 10 MILLION NEW Back Injuries per year!

Think about all the activities you perform that require your back.  These activities include - but are not limited to lifting, standing, sitting, twisting, carrying, reaching, slipping, and potentially falling.

As with most situations we discuss on this podcast - most of the activities listed above can be coupled with safety to prevent injuries from occurring.

It could take us all day to list all the things you could do - so since we try to give you high-level quick tips, here are a few steps to get started:

  • Wear protective PPE when and wherever applicable.  In the case of your back - this would be items such as back braces, weight belts, and safety harnesses.  Regarding your feet - always wear the proper supportive and safe footwear.
  • Make good posture a focused habit.  Standing tall with your shoulders back isn't just something your Mom tells you to do - it's something health professionals would tell you as well.
  • When sitting - especially as part of your job or for long periods - be sure not to slouch.  Keep your back straight, have a chair with proper lumbar support, and ensure your work area is ergonomically friendly.
  • Lift Properly.  Know your limits, lift with your knees, and keep the weight close to your body.
  • Stretch periodically.  If your facility does calisthenics before or during shifts - be sure to participate.
  • Know and listen to your body.  If you're doing something that doesn't feel right, make changes before injuries occur.
You only get ONE healthy back - make you take care of yours!

We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

This week, our podcast will cover part three of a three-part series.  The step we're talking about today is LISTEN (Part of Stop, Look, and Listen).

As with the other steps - this step may have many other aspects, but the following suggestions will get you off to a great start.

  • When you're at work, listen and pay attention to all announcements, briefings, meetings, and any other information related to your facility.
  • While operating vehicles or machinery - listen for anything out of the ordinary.
  • Be sure to listen for any alarms, weather, or interactions from fellow staff/management.
  • While at your facility - listen for horns, beeps, and other sounds designed to get your attention.
  • Listen to and follow directions/guidelines for your position and behavior within your facility.
This short list and our previous lists for Stop and Look will help keep you, the staff, vehicles/machinery, and the facility safe and boost awareness.

Safety In Three Steps - Part Two

This week, our podcast will cover part two of a three-part series.  The step we're talking about today is LOOK (Part of Stop, Look, and Listen).

This step can have several different aspects, but here are a few to get you started.

  • Take the time to walk your facility and look for things that are being done correctly or could be improved upon, things that aren't being done correctly or could be eliminated and things you should be doing.  This is part of a 5S Methodology and will allow for constant and never-ending improvements within your facility.
  • Before you walk into areas with any traffic - please take the time to look both ways.
  • When working with products, look/inspect them to ensure you're delivering the best to your customers.
  • When shipping, be sure to look several times to make sure your product matches your order.
All these steps - as well as ones in place within your facility - will help eliminate issues.  As with most errors within a facility, a large percentage could be avoided by just paying attention.

We'd be honored to have you back next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

S5 Ep244: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 244 | Worker Safety - Stay Hydrated14 Aug 202400:03:45
Worker Safety - Stay Hydrated

We know we sound like a broken record, but some safety-related things are worth repeating.

As we continue to battle the Summer Heat (At least here in Ohio), let's revisit and expand on last week's tips. Heat stroke prevention and proper hydration practices share almost the same tips, and they're vital in keeping our team safe!

Here are some tips on staying cool and hydrated:

  1. Double down on hydration: Drink water before, during, and after your shift. In hot conditions, aim for at least 8 ounces hourly. Remember, thirst means you're already dehydrated.
  2. Do you know the danger signs? Confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or dark urine could signal heat stroke or severe dehydration. Please don't ignore them.
  3. Dress for success: Light, breathable clothing is still your best bet against the heat.
  4. Cool down regularly: Take advantage of break times, cooling stations, and air-conditioned areas. Your body will thank you.
  5. Watch out for each other: Speak up if a coworker seems off. Quick action can prevent heat-related severe illnesses.
We're repeating ourselves because your safety matters that much. Heat stroke and dehydration are serious risks, but they're preventable with the proper practices. Of course, as always - be sure to follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility.

By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, we're not just keeping cool and hydrated but creating a safer, healthier workplace for everyone.

Even if it's figuratively, let's make it through August without breaking a sweat!

Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until we meet next time - have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Safety In Three Steps - Part One

Our podcast today will be part one of a three-part series.

We're aware that safety has far too many steps to list - but with all topics we cover on this podcast - we've condensed the message into three easy steps.  Those steps are Stop, Look, and Listen.  It's a great thing to do at Railroad Crossings, it's lyrics from one of Elvis Presley's songs, and it's an awesome way to conduct a successful safety program.

This week we'll be covering the first step - STOP.

As it pertains to safety, it has several different applications, including but not limited to the following:

  • Stopping to ask yourself, "Is this safe?"
  • Should a safety issue occur, stop to figure out what happened and how to prevent it from happening in the future.
  • Stopping at all posted stop points within your facility or anywhere you know could be an issue before continuing.
As with all safety steps mentioned on this podcast, this step could prevent countless safety issues when implemented.  Doing so means better production, profits, and, most importantly - a safe facility and staff!
We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Reporting Accidents In The Workplace

What is accident reporting - and more importantly, what's a correct incident reporting procedure?

Simply put, accident reporting is just what the name implies. Whether it affects property, persons, or both - all accidents need to be reported.

Employers must provide a detailed list of what to do when an accident occurs in the workplace. This list should include what steps to take immediately, who to notify and how to contact emergency personnel.
The correct incident reporting procedure may vary from workplace to workplace, but all staff should always follow these steps.

  • Tend to the situation at hand first. If there are injuries - treat them and call for help. If damage has occurred to the property - take the steps needed to ensure it won't affect staff and make plans on how to fix the situation.
  • Get the name(s) of people injured or involved.
  • Get the name(s) of any witnesses to the incident(s).
  • Get as many details as possible from both those involved and witnesses as soon as possible while everything is still fresh in their memory. This information should include everything from injuries or damage sustained to the events before, during, and after the incidents.
  • Make sure everyone who needs to be contacted - management, family members, etc. - is immediately alerted.

It's important to report accidents in the workplace because every accident can have a lasting impact on your company and its employees. Because of this, it is crucial to identify weaknesses in practices or processes, prevent them from happening again, and educate everyone involved.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Hazardous Energy Safety

Hazardous Energy can release in several ways, including rotating parts, moving parts, pressure on equipment, and the action of electromagnetic fields.

It's essential to know how to protect yourself from these real dangers.  The sudden release of stored energy in equipment and machinery can result in everything from injury to death.

Proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Procedures can prevent hazardous energy releases.  Lockout/Tagout is a program that uses mechanical means to prevent unexpected startup of machinery or equipment.  These procedures can help prevent hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries annually.

In addition to a Lockout/Tagout Program - take extra time to account for everyone in your area, look and listen for people within your work area, and never assume you're good to start a machine until you've double and triple-checked that it's safe to do so.  You might think taking the extra time to do so isn't needed - but it's much better than shutting down entirely due to an injury or death.

Focus on the tasks that consistently improve productivity, production, and most importantly, safety - and you'll always be on the right track!

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Emergency Safety

At the time of this podcast - a record-breaking hurricane is getting ready to hit Florida's West Coast.  In the case of a hurricane - you get the advanced warning that potentially hazardous weather is approaching.  But many other emergencies don't give you that option.

So how do you prepare for such an event?  By planning for it BEFORE it occurs.

Part of The 5S Methodology is the constant and never-ending improvement of all operations within your facility.  By doing a preemptive strike on potential events - you'll be as prepared as possible should emergencies occur.

Ensure your safety team walks your facility actively looking for ways to improve emergency preparedness and overall safety.

  • Make sure all Exit Signs are lit and in plain view.
  • Test Emergency Lighting regularly.
  • Post Emergency Plans in several locations within your facility.
  • Ensure all First Aid Kits, Eye Wash Stations, Chemical Showers, Fire Extinguishers, and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) Units are in working order.
  • Ensure you train and test your staff on what to do in an emergency.
There are likely many other Emergency Safety Tips to share - but the above list will get you on the road to being prepared.

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

PPE Safety

As we come to what appears to be the end of the Covid Pandemic - public mask requirements have all but gone away.  However - in facilities where masks are part of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) Safety Procedures, the need to wear them is still very much needed.

And it may not be your facility making the decision.  OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Guidelines may require that your facility wear certain PPE.

In addition to masks and respirators you wear to protect your breathing - don't forget these other important items to complete your PPE Safety.

Safety Glasses to protect your sight.Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs to protect your hearing.

Hard Hats to protect your head.
Gloves to protect your hands.
Steel Toed Boots to protect your feet.
Braces to protect your back.
Harnesses to protect you from falls.

More PPE Safety Items may be required at your facility, but this list should get you well on your way.

We've said this before, but it bears repeating.  Remember - your health and safety are your bosses regarding PPE Safety.  You're only fooling yourself if you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it.  It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and death in the worst-case scenarios.  Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety.

Safety Culture

In today's podcast, we'll talk about creating a safety culture.

So stay tuned.

Safety Culture

Have you ever heard the term 'Culture'?

As it pertains to your facility - it's the behaviors and procedures observed regularly (Or the 'norm').

The late Tony Hsieh - Founder of the shoe company Zappos - knew culture inside and out.  So much so - Zappos would publish an annual Culture Book and make it available to the public.  Tony and the Zappos Management would give a bonus to people that didn't like their job (And/or do it within their culture) to leave.  In addition - they'd help that person find a new job that did suit them.  Imagine striving for that sort of culture in your workplace!

How do you look at Safety?  Do you view it as something you must do when management is looking - or as a culture?  Hopefully, it's the latter!

When you view safety as a culture, you take pride in it, seek to improve it, and know your facility doesn't operate correctly without it.

An engaged Safety Culture will improve quality, productivity, profits, and make your staff safer.  What more can you ask for?

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Full-Time Safety

How safe and pleasing is it to have a full tank of gas?  You KNOW there's no way you will run out anytime soon.

Same thing with a full-time job.  It gives you comfort in knowing you're earning at full capacity.

Most things are just better when done at one hundred percent.

And when it comes to safety - this couldn't be more true.  Regardless of why you'd do it - it's never OK to operate at anything less than one hundred percent.  Those moments when you remove your safety glasses because they're foggy, take off your hard hat because it's hot, or remove your harness because it's uncomfortable - is when disaster has the potential to strike.  And if you listen to people that have been lucky enough to recall an accident - they almost always have the same story.  "I've done that (whatever it was that assisted the accident) a hundred times before - and nothing happened."

Attribute safety to that of a relationship you have.  If you don't think there's a correlation - tell your significant other that you're ninety-nine percent faithful to them, and you'll see just how important one percent can be!

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

So stay tuned.

Avoiding Slips And Falls

Have you ever heard the Chinese Proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”? It means that if you want success and growth in the future, the best time to act is now.

So how does it apply to safety and our message for today?

Although we're not even done with Summer yet (In the United States), Fall and Winter are right around the corner.  And with those seasons come wet leaves, ice, snow, and all sorts of slick elements not usually present.

Add the usual spills and leaks from machines/vehicles in the workplace to the mix - and you have all sorts of potentially hazardous conditions.

Slips and falls account for hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and OSHA Violations.

As with most unsafe situations in the workplace – most of these situations could have been avoided.

Here are just a few ways you can help prevent slips from happening - and get ahead of potential situations.

- Encourage staff to wipe off and stamp their feet before entering your facility during rainy or snowy days.
- Make sure you have anti-slip tape, gritty surfaces, and mats in problem areas.
- Repair machines/vehicles that leak.  And if you can't stop leaks - contain them with proper spill containment products.
- Encourage staff to alert maintenance as soon as a wet area is discovered.
- Regularly mop wet areas and put out signs/cones indicating the situation.
- Make sure staff wears slip-resistant footwear wherever applicable.

These are just a few tips to make you aware - but if followed, should be a great start toward avoiding slips and falls at your facility.

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!

Safety Walkthrough

The Cambridge Dictionary defines a 'walkthrough' as "the act of doing something or checking something in order to find possible problems."

Is there someone or a team at your facility that does Safety Walkthroughs?

The definition above covers "possible problems," but a Safety Walkthrough should also look for things that are being done right and ways to improve things.

If you've implemented and are engaged in a 5S Methodology at your facility, you're already doing this.  If you aren't - then start A.S.A.P.!

Improved efficiency, productivity, and safety increase profits and the chances of your employees working effectively and going home safe at the end of the day.  And that's precisely what we're here to help happen!

Forklift Training

Have you ever been to a facility where there are permanent marks in the concrete, paint has been scraped away, or tape has been ripped up due to improper forklift traffic?  This situation comes from dragging or having forks in the wrong position - and it's completely avoidable.

How?  Training!

But it's not just about the proper use of the forks.  It goes much deeper than that.  But since we always try to keep things short and high-level - here are a few things to consider when it comes to Forklift Training and Safety.

  • Before even getting on a forklift - be sure you've been trained, or OSHA Certified to do so.
  • Perform a check at the beginning of each shift to assure the forklifts you're operating are in good working order with an inspection and general maintenance check.
  • Know ALL the rules and regulations of your facility.
  • Be aware of the load carrying, lifting, and storage rules.
  • Wear and utilize all the safety equipment determined by your facility.
  • Know your surroundings at all times - such as walls, poles, doorways, pipes, racks, other forklifts, and people.
  • Obey Speed Limits.
  • Watch for changing floor conditions due to spills or weather.
  • Keep travel areas clear of all debris.
Pay attention and keep safety top of mind; these tips will be a great start towards staying safe while operating a forklift.

Worker Safety - Beat The Heat

As temperatures soar, keeping our team safe from heat-related hazards is crucial. Review key strategies to protect workers and comply with guidelines and regulations. Remember, a safe workplace is a productive workplace!

Here are a few tips for beating the heat:

  1. Know the signs: Watch for confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and high body temperature. These could indicate heat stroke.
  2. Dress smart: Light, breathable clothing is your best friend in hot conditions.
  3. Take breaks: Schedule regular cool-down periods, especially during peak heat hours.
  4. Stay hydrated: Provide easy access to water and encourage frequent drinking.
  5. Cool it down: Use fans, air conditioning, or cooling stations.
These are by no means the only tips for keeping cool, but by following them, we can beat the heat and keep our team safe. As always, follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility.

If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, act fast—cool them down, give them water, and get medical help immediately.

Let's make safety our top priority!

Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until we meet next time - have a great week, and STAY SAFE!

Make Way For Safety

Inspiration for our podcast today comes from outside of work.  We needed to have some rugs cleaned - and decided to move everything out of the rooms being steamed (As opposed to cleaning around larger items).  You don't realize how much stuff you have in a room until you see it empty.  In addition - you start to question what needs to make its way back in and how you will arrange it.   While waiting for the carpets to be done - I listened to talk radio.  They were going over what millennials are requesting as new benefits - and how things have to change to meet those requests.

These two things made me wonder how often changes are made in your facility to ensure optimized safety, efficiency, and productivity.

If you follow the 5S Methodology - you know that constant and never-ending improvement is a major factor in the success of a facility.  But unfortunately, "That's the way we've always done it." comes into play far too often.

We know you can't move most machinery and general layouts - but you CAN focus on the best situations possible in every area.

So focus on the things you can change - and adopt moving forward into the future over remaining in the ideas of the past.

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!

Safety Announcements

So stay tuned.

Safety Announcements

Safety at your facility is of the utmost importance!  Whether via staff, maintenance, safety coordinators, management, or a combination of them all - you strive to make safety number one.

But there's a vital ingredient to the recipe.  You need safety announcements to make everyone at your facility aware of the safety measures that have been put in place.  Without doing so - it can be as if you've done nothing.

So how do you accomplish this?

This is just a sampling of things you can do - but it should be a great way to start.
  • Before each shift - make safety updates part of your briefings.
  • Post all safety information in highly visible locations around your facility, such as breakrooms and other areas where info is displayed.
  • Have Safety Meetings regularly to discuss current safety measures and how things can be improved upon.  And make sure this information is shared outside of the meetings in the places mentioned within this list.
  • Last - but certainly not least - encourage staff to listen to, watch, or read content similar to this podcast.
That's the reason we do this podcast.  We want to give you bite-sized high-level looks at safety - so it's always top of mind.  If we're just a percentage of why you and your staff go home safe at the end of your work day - then we've done our job!

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

What makes Mighty Line the superior choice in keeping your facility safe and productive?

  • Mighty Line Tape is the strongest floor tape on the market and has a beveled edge that increases durability for industrial brush scrubbers, forklifts, and heavy industrial wheel traffic.
  • Easy installation and removal thanks to Mighty Line's peel and stick backing.  You can apply and reapply it during installation - and it leaves no sticky residue should you need to remove it.  This allows the ability to change workflow areas quickly and easily - and not have the downtime associated with painting or using floor markings that leave behind a mess when you remove them.
  • Mighty Line Tape is 7 times thicker than the average Safety Floor Tape.
  • Mighty Line's Signs and Marking come in various shapes, colors, and sizes.  And if they don't have what you're looking for in stock - their Customize It Program allows you to create exactly what you're looking for.

Customized Safety
On today's podcast - we're going to discuss customizing your safety messages.
So stay tuned.
You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener, this podcast will be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!

Customized Safety
Part of an ongoing and successful 5S Methodology is always being on the lookout for ways to improve safety.
One of the ways we do this is by ensuring paths and procedures are properly marked.  And even though you can usually find most safety signs and floor tape with the required message, sometimes it just doesn't meet your needs.  That's where custom safety signs and floor and tape come in.   Your text. Your logo. Your design!
So there's no reason for not having everything in your facility properly marked for maximum safety.
Doing so keeps your "Days Since An Accident" Sign numbers going higher and higher.

We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!
