What Porn, Social Media & Silence Are Teaching Young People About Consent22 May 202600:26:20

⚠️ Content warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual violence, coercion, pornography, misogyny, and online abuse.

Drawing from over 50,000 anonymous testimonies submitted to Everyone’s Invited, this episode explores what happens when sexual violence, misogyny, and online abuse become so common that young people begin to believe they are simply 'normal'.

Chris speaks with Alex Somers about the culture young people are growing up in and the realities many adults still don’t want to face.

Together, they unpack:

  • why pornography is increasingly shaping young people’s understanding of sex, consent, and relationships
  • the rise of violent sexual behaviours becoming normalised among teenagers
  • the toxic online narratives influencing both boys and girls
  • the dangerous gap between what young people experience and what adults are willing to talk about
  • how shame, silence, and fear stop young people from speaking out
  • and whether schools, parents, tech companies, and government are failing to keep up with the realities young people are navigating every day.

This is an uncomfortable but essential conversation.

Burnout Is a Safeguarding Risk: The Hidden Danger Behind Decision Fatigue08 May 202600:28:14

What if burnout isn’t just a wellbeing issue?

What if it’s already affecting safeguarding decisions in schools?

In this brutally honest episode, Chris chats down with organisational psychologist Karen Forshaw to unpack the safeguarding risks created by chronic stress and impossible workloads.

Because stressed safeguarding professionals don’t just feel exhausted - they'll miss things, become too reactive, and eventually the system will start failing the very ones it was designed to protect.

This episode explores:

  • why overloaded DSLs become vulnerable to decision fatigue
  • how safeguarding cultures silently create risk
  • the link between burnout and flawed judgement

This is a conversation every school leader needs to hear!

Chemsex and Control: When Safeguarding Becomes Harmful06 Feb 202600:29:21

How do you respond when someone discloses chemsex, all without panic, judgment, or stripping away their dignity?

In this episode, Matthew Fuller joins us to explore the complex realities of chemsex and why traditional safeguarding approaches often miss the mark.

We unpack sexualised drug use, stigma, and why chemsex is so often misunderstood as “too risky” rather than deeply contextual.

Matthew challenges professionals to look honestly at unconscious bias, cultural competency, and the real harm caused when safeguarding frameworks prioritise control over autonomy.

This conversation is about more than drugs or sex. It’s about trust, empowerment, and why dignity is not optional if safety is the goal.

Sexual Shame: The Safeguarding Conversation We Avoid30 Jan 202600:22:31

Sex education doesn’t fail because young people are immature.

It fails because adults are carrying unprocessed sexual shame.

Sexologist, sex therapist and consent trainer Sian Johnson joins us to unpack why sex education, consent conversations and sexual disclosures are so difficult for adults, not because they’re ‘awkward’, but because they activate shame carried in our bodies, beliefs and nervous systems.

This episode delves into:

  • The difference between healthy shame and toxic sexual shame

  • Why sexual shame can stop people reporting abuse or exploitation

  • Why asking teachers to deliver RSE without proper support is setting them up to fail

  • How shame shows up in classrooms, safeguarding roles and professional responses

This is an honest, nuanced conversation about what adults bring into safeguarding spaces, often unknowingly, and why ignoring that reality puts both professionals and young people at risk.

Because safeguarding is also about what’s happening inside those who hold responsibility.

Sex and Consent: How 'No Means No' Failed a Generation23 Jan 202600:24:10

Consent is often taught as simple.

Real life rarely is.

In the first of our series 'Let's Talk About Sex (and Safeguarding)', Chris East is joined by Rupert James Allison, consent workshop facilitator for university students, to unpick what consent actually looks like in the real world.

They touch on why myths from the 1970s still linger, how heteronormative teaching has limited our understanding of consent, and why focusing solely on harm can shut down meaningful learning.

Rupert introduces the Wheel of Consent and a deceptively simple question that can transform sexual experiences and everyday interactions alike:

Who is this for?

From non-verbal communication to the power of asking for a pause, this conversation challenges the idea that consent is a one-off yes or no.

Instead, it invites us to see consent as something we arrive at together.

This episode is essential listening for educators, safeguarding professionals, university staff, and anyone who wants to move beyond box-ticking and towards ethical, respectful, and genuinely mutual sexual experiences.

When Teacher Burnout Goes Unnoticed16 Jan 202600:30:34

What happens when a teacher breaks and no one notices?

In this powerful episode, experienced educator Anna Fannon shares the moment she went beyond burnout, and why it changed everything.

From masking in the classroom to hiding in plain sight, Anna describes what it feels like to be physically present at work, but mentally gone.

Together, Anna and Chris confront one of education’s biggest blind spots: why staff wellbeing is still treated as a 'nice to have', while safeguarding and care are reserved almost entirely for students, and what it really costs when adults are expected to keep going, unnoticed.

This conversation digs into:

  • Why cake, cards and wellbeing posters aren’t enough

  • The real cost of constant masking for staff

  • What leaders miss when they don’t ask, “What do you need?”

If you work in education, leadership, safeguarding or pastoral roles, this one is for you.

Australia Social Media Ban: Is the Nuclear Option the Right Fix?09 Jan 202600:30:20

Australia has become the first country in the world to ban social media for under-16s.

Some are calling it bold.

Others are calling it overdue.

Young people are calling it life-ruining.

In this episode of Safeguarding Redefined, Chris is joined by online safety specialist Andy Briercliffe to ask the uncomfortable question many aren’t ready to answer yet:

Does banning social media actually make children safer or just push the risks somewhere else?

Together they unpack:

  • Why an outright ban feels appealing but may miss the real problem
  • The uncomfortable reality of image sharing, sexting, and peer pressure
  • Whether regulation, education, and culture change are being sidelined in favour of headlines

This isn’t a neat debate with a tidy solution.

It’s an honest, experience-led conversation about uncertainty, unintended consequences, and why safeguarding rarely works when we reach for the nuclear option.

If you work with children, lead safeguarding, or are parenting through the digital minefield, this episode will challenge your assumptions and sharpen your questions.

Who Holds the Risk When Safeguarding Goes Wrong?19 Dec 202500:16:32

Trustees and governors hold ultimate responsibility for safeguarding.
So why do so many feel under-equipped and uncertain when it comes to asking the right questions?

In this episode, the Safeguarding Collective strip back the myths around governance, DSL capacity, and DBS checks.

They explore what boards actually need to know, where organisations unintentionally set people up to fail, and why 'being a volunteer' is not a reason to lower safeguarding standards.

The Real Reason Our Behaviour Systems Undermine Safeguarding12 Dec 202500:33:23

What if the way we manage behaviour is quietly working against the thing we care about most - a child's safety?

In this episode, Chris chats with SEMH specialist Heather Lucas to explore one of the most awkward questions in education:
can you manage behaviour and still be someone children feel safe to disclose to?

They unpack the hidden tensions built into many behaviour systems, why punitive approaches damage felt safety, and what really happens when a child is expected to trust the same adult who restrains, sanctions, or suspends them.

Heather takes the conversation deeper, questioning whether splitting the roles is truly the answer or whether the real issue is how we approach behaviour in the first place.

If you’ve ever sensed a mismatch between your behaviour policy and your safeguarding values, this episode will strike a chord and offer a more connected, relational way forward.

This Is How Stalking Really Begins - And Why It Gets Missed24 Apr 202600:35:17

We’re closing our stalking series with a crucial perspective.

Recorded last November, Chris speaks with Jane Harvey, CEO of the Hollie Gazzard Trust, exploring what often comes before stalking is recognised.

Because it rarely begins where we think it does.

What if the real risk isn’t the moment someone turns violent, but the months, even years, leading up to it?

In this episode, we explore:

  • How fixation turns into obsession
  • Why stalking behaviours are so often minimised or dismissed
  • The subtle warning signs that are explained away
  • How victims gradually lose control of their daily lives

From digital footprints to so-called 'harmless' jokes, this conversation challenges the narratives that allow harmful behaviour to go unchecked.

If the previous episodes showed you the impact, this one helps you see it coming.

Safeguarding From the Top: When the Head Is the DSL28 Nov 202500:30:12

What happens when your headteacher is also the DSL… and the culture isn’t just written on paper, it’s actually lived?

In this episode, Chris speaks with Jon Turner about the realities of being both Headteacher and DSL - the leadership strain, the sleepless nights, and the cultural backbone that makes it all possible.

Jon shares:

  • how he built a trust-first culture from day one
  • why empathy is a leadership strength rather than a soft option, and
  • what it feels like to make a referral at 4.30pm… then spend the evening wondering if a child is actually safe.

The Brutal Truth: Vulnerable Children Don’t Need Another Policy, They Need This21 Nov 202500:26:14

Safeguarding loves a strong policy.
But vulnerable children don’t feel policies, they feel culture.
And if your culture isn’t giving them stability, belonging and safety, nothing else matters.

In this episode, Chris speaks with Dominic Riste, Assistant Headteacher for Pastoral Care and Safeguarding at Woodlands School Basildon, and member of NAPCE – National Association of Pastoral Care in Education.

Dominic lifts the lid on a whole-school model that’s actually changing outcomes for children known to social care.

Not theory. Not posters. Not paperwork.
Real culture. Real consistency. Real change.

You’ll hear:

  • what trauma really looks like in school
  • why consistency beats any intervention
  • the four pillars of their safeguarding culture
  • how they kept vulnerable pupils engaged, stable and thriving
  • why this all matters more than anything else we do

They dive into:

How to confidently close a concern without anything slipping through the cracks, including Klaudia’s four essential checks and why “lessons learned” shouldn’t be an afterthought.

 • What schools should actually be checking when social workers, speakers, contractors, or coaches walk through the door,  whilst Jon busts the big myth about flashing DBS certificates at reception!

What a real safeguarding culture feels like, not just looks like,  from the front gate to the first five minutes a visitor walks in, as well as why your tone, welcome, and everyday human interactions matter as much as your policies.

And why safer recruitment starts before anyone even applies (spoiler: your job advert is doing more than you think).

I Didn’t Know I Was a Victim: The Reality of Abuse After You Leave10 Apr 202600:37:32

This episode is not easy listening - but it’s one you need to hear.

Lorna Allen shares what it’s really like to live through coercive control, stalking, and abuse that doesn’t end when the relationship does.

From the outside, it didn’t look obvious - there was no single moment, no defined line. Just a slow, confusing change in behaviour that only made sense in hindsight.

“I didn’t even know I was a victim… until the police told me.”

In this conversation, Lorna speaks openly about:

  • Why leaving isn’t the end of the story

  • The reality of coercive and controlling behaviour

  • The daily impact most people never see or understand

  • How systems meant to protect can still leave people exposed

Lorna also shares why she made the difficult decision to go public, and what needs to change to protect others.

This isn’t just awareness, it’s a lived reality.

And for many, it doesn’t end when the relationship does.

Is Tutoring the Biggest Unchecked Risk in Education?07 Nov 202500:19:12

Tutoring feels harmless enough… until you realise there’s no statutory safeguarding framework holding that world together.

In this episode, Rachel Ballantyne lifts the lid on an unregulated industry where anyone can call themselves a tutor and step straight into a child’s life.

We dig into the uncomfortable questions:
• How can a parent actually know their child is safe?
• Why do so many tutoring providers still have no DSL, no vetting, and no process for reporting concerns?
• And what happens to the most vulnerable pupils when safety becomes optional?

Rachel shares how she’s trying to rewrite the rulebook with Edify - creating real standards, real accountability, and a blueprint the whole sector should be following.

If you work with children, hire tutors, or are a tutor yourself, this one’s a wake-up call!

Stalking: The Warning Signs We Miss31 Oct 202500:35:30

What if the danger isn’t the moment someone turns violent,  but the months or even years before?

In this episode Chris East speaks with Jane Harvey, CEO of the Hollie Gazzard Trust, about the hidden reality of stalking: how fixation becomes obsession, how victims lose control of their lives, and why society still laughs off this type of behaviour that actually ruins lives.

Jane shares what she’s learned after supporting thousands of victims,  and how safeguarding professionals can spot the warning signs before they escalate.

From digital footprints to offhand jokes about “Facebook stalking,” this episode dismantles the myths, exposes the risks, and calls for a cultural shift in how we talk about, and act on, unwanted attention.

Toxic or Just Misunderstood? The Masculinity Conversation24 Oct 202500:23:17

What does it really mean to be a boy in 2025?

How can we redefine masculinity to foster genuine self-worth?

In this episode, Ben Oliver, founder of Worth Educating, joins Chris to unpack how today’s culture sells masculinity to young men, and why phrases like 'toxic masculinity' might be doing more harm than good.

They explore how shame-based language shuts boys down, how fear hides behind banter, and how educators can create safer spaces for honest conversations about identity, friendship, and mental health.

Why Exclusions Fuel the School-to-Prison Pipeline17 Oct 202500:26:22

Do suspensions and exclusions actually improve student behaviour, or could they be doing more harm than good?

In this episode, Chris talks with Zelpher Ferguson, education and youth advocacy specialist at Aluna Behaviour Consultancy.

Zelpher shares her expert insights on how certain school policies can inadvertently push young people towards the justice system and highlights why building strong, relational connections in schools is essential.

They explore the importance of understanding the root causes of disruptive behaviour, trauma-informed approaches, and why the children who need the most support often express it in the most challenging ways.

If you work in education, safeguarding, or youth support, this conversation offers practical guidance and fresh perspectives on managing behaviour while actually supporting young people’s growth.

Ending Sexual & Gender Violence: Training That Works10 Oct 202500:25:20

What does real change around sexual and gender-based violence look like?

Are e-learning modules really enough to make a difference?

In this episode, Chris East talks with Ruth Heneke Eliot, Co-Founder of Training Works, about how institutions can go beyond tick-box training and policies that protect their reputation to create genuine, trauma-informed cultures of safety.

They cover:

  • Is a simple click-through training enough?

  • How policies can focus on supporting survivors, not just protecting institutions.

  • The importance of relationships and sexuality education in preventing harm.

  • Why safeguarding needs to protect everyone - students, staff, and communities.

This is essential listening for anyone who wants to move from ticking boxes to making real cultural change.

He Stalked Her for 3 Years… Yet Passed Every Safeguarding Check27 Mar 202600:30:02

This episode will stop you in your tracks.

Bev Nickson shares the reality of living through three years of stalking by someone in a position of trust.

There was CCTV, witnesses and 19 separate stalking behaviours identified by a barrister.

And yet no arrest, no criminal charge and no safeguarding red flag.

Instead, Bev was left to navigate the civil courts alone, at a significant personal cost.

But the most concerning part isn’t just what happened to Bev, it’s what happened next.

The individual responsible continued working in education…and even became a school governor.

In this conversation, we unpack a critical gap in safeguarding that many organisations don’t even realise exists.

Because if we’re relying on DBS checks alone, what are we missing?

---

Bev is now campaigning to close this loophole through a UK Parliament petition, calling for civil harassment and stalking orders to be included on Enhanced DBS checks to better protect children and vulnerable people.

Living with ADHD and Autism: The Late Diagnosis Journey19 Sep 202500:25:43

What if everything you thought you knew about yourself was rewritten by a late diagnosis?

In this episode, Chris chats with our guest Victoria Morris, about uncovering the raw realities of discovering ADHD and autism later in life.

They dive into the hidden cost of masking, the toll on mental health, and the journey toward genuine self-understanding.

The conversation also challenges how education and society treat neurodiverse individuals and what needs to change to build real inclusivity.

If you've ever felt the pressure to 'fit in', or want to understand the unspoken struggles behind a late diagnosis, this episode will leave you thinking differently.

Neuroaffirmative Safeguarding: Are We Ready to Change?12 Sep 202500:22:41

Are we really listening to neurodiverse children?

And what does it mean to adopt a neuroaffirmative approach to safeguarding?

In this episode, Chris is joined by Rebecca Hitch from The Myriad Collective to explore how valuing difference can transform schools, organisations, and support systems.

They unpack why neurodiversity, especially in females, is so often missed or misunderstood, and why it’s up to us to adapt our approach, not the other way round.

Drawing on Rebecca’s 20+ years in education, therapy, and crisis support, this conversation challenges traditional safeguarding and shows how trauma-informed, inclusive environments can help every individual thrive.

Every year, an average of 40,000 teachers leave the classroom. Why is this happening - and what can we do about it?

In this episode, we speak with Mike Leaman, Founder of Classroom Exit Coach and former school leader with over a decade in education leadership.

Mike shares powerful insights into why educators are stepping away - from burnout and toxic cultures to feeling undervalued and under constant scrutiny.

This isn't a call to leave the profession - it's a call to understand what's driving people out, and how we can better support those working in education.

Summer Rewind - Money Talks: A Safeguarding Issue Schools Are Missing08 Aug 202500:25:13

While we take a summer breather, we're revisiting one of our most-loved episodes from earlier this year...

We teach kids to stay safe online, to be careful in public, to look out for danger.

But what about financial safety?

Right now, young people are entering adulthood without being taught the basic financial knowledge they need whilst at school.

They're falling victim to scams, sinking into debt, and making money mistakes that could affect them for years, simply because no one taught them how to protect themselves financially.

In this episode, we're joined by Noah Brierley, a social media influencer with a massive following and on a mission to help young people understand the financial traps they weren't warned about.

Because if we don't teach them, who will?

Summer Rewind - Porn: The Hidden Damage To Healthy Relationships01 Aug 202500:24:48

While we take a summer breather, we're revisiting one of our most-loved episodes/posts from earlier this year...

Pornography is shaping how young people view sex, intimacy, and relationships, but not in a healthy way. So why is it still a taboo topic?

In this episode, Chris East speaks with PJ Livett, founder of rePHRASE, about the real cost of porn. With children exposed to porn as young as 7 or 8, we must ask: Should we be talking about this more? This is a safeguarding conversation we can't afford to ignore.

PJ Livett, Founder of rePHRASE, works with young people to provide Healthy Relationships and Sex Education (without the awkwardness!). PJ's interactive and down-to-earth workshops help young people understand the impact of social media and tech on relationships and sex, ensuring they're physically and emotionally safe. rePHRASE equips young people with the knowledge and resilience to make informed choices and build a positive relationship culture.

Why Safer Recruitment Fails Before the Interview Starts13 Mar 202600:21:22

Safer recruitment is not a formality, and it is not just an HR process. It is one of the most important safeguarding measures any organisation has.

In this episode of Safeguarding Redefined, Chris is joined by Jon Pettit from Safeguard-Me and Klaudia Ratajczak from Patronus Safeguarding to unpack what safer recruitment really means in practice, and where organisations still get it wrong.

Together, they explore:

  • why safeguarding starts long before someone’s first day

  • how weak recruitment processes create real risk,

  • and why job adverts, application forms, interview questions, references, induction, and low-level concerns all matter more than many organisations realise.

This is a practical and thought-provoking conversation for anyone responsible for recruiting staff or volunteers, especially in organisations working with children or vulnerable people.

Exposing The Hidden Costs Of Safeguarding: The Pressure No One Talks About04 Jul 202500:25:40

What happens when you've dealt with too much?

Jennie Blake has spent 25 years safeguarding young people, including within the housing and homelessness services.

Youth violence. Death. Trauma. Systemic failure.

She’s seen it all, and felt the cost.

In this raw and honest conversation, Jennie shares:

  • The impact of serious safeguarding concerns on staff mental health

  • How desensitisation creeps in and why that’s a warning sign

  • Why frontline workers often feel like they have to “just keep going”

  • And what needs to change so those protecting others aren’t left unprotected themselves

If you’ve ever felt emotionally flat, overwhelmed, or quietly burning out, this episode is for you.
