We so enjoyed talking with Karen Dunn, who qualified for the Olympic Trials at 43 years old, just five years after running her very first marathon in 2017.  We loved hearing Karen's story, including running as an elite in Boston 2018--and who she sat on the bus with on the way to Hopkinton--reaching her ultimate goal, a 2:43 marathon at Chicago, and running the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta in 2020, how the book, Elite Minds by Stan Beecham, changed her entire approach to her running, and why she believes, as a coach and athlete, that above all else, we must believe in ourselves when pursuing our goals. Karen is an RRCA Certified Coach and the owner of Strengthen Your Stride. She can be found on Instagram at www.instagram.com/strengthenyourstride or at www.strengthenyourstride.com. Episode 111: Shalane Flanagan Was Not the Only One to Complete Six World Marathon Majors in Seven Weeks...Meet Joe Drake!

Saison 6 · Épisode 111

vendredi 19 novembre 2021Durée 01:15:16

Meet the incredible Joe Drake. Like Shalane, Joe, at age 60, crossed the NYC Marathon finish line after completing his fifth World Marathon Major (plus a virtual Tokyo) in seven weeks.  Joe decided to pursue this goal because (not in spite of) of his Parkinson’s Disease. Joe shares how his diagnosis in 2018 transformed him from an “everyday runner” to a marathoner and a Boston Qualifier.  After all of the World Marathon Majors (minus Tokyo which was virtual) were scheduled for the fall of 2021 (thanks, Covid), Joe decided to tackle the challenge of running all six races in seven weeks.  Joe not only managed to enter, travel, and run all six marathons, but he also raised over $35,000 for Team Fox, which is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.  In this episode, Joe shares the logistics, training and racing strategy behind his unbelievable accomplishment and reminds us all that our running is so much more about the journey and not race times.  If you would like to donate to Joe's Team Fox fundraising efforts, check out his fundraising pages (one for each race for which he received a charity bib):
