🎵🎵Rock and Roll Legend Alice Cooper is known for his twisted and deranged theatrical performance in combination with his hard rock and roll. Originally rejected in LA by record label after record label....he eventually lived up to (and far exceeded) his high school year book's "aspiration" of one day selling a million dollar record. Raised by a preacher, and the grandson of an evangelist, Alice Cooper has an eerie similarity (in my opinion) to Screamin' Jay Hawkins and the Screamin' Jay style song "I Put a Spell On You" (which is why I'm making that episode a sister episode to this one: links below). I can't help but wonder if Alice Cooper (aka Vincent Furnier) got some inspiration from Alan Freed & Jay Hawkins. While that part remains uncertain, one thing is for sure: Alice Cooper's unwavering faith in God healed him from his darkest hours and brought us the sickest most insane Alice Cooper we ever could have imagined. How this man is able to compartmentalize his show business with his faith and personal life is an inspiration to artists everywhere. He's more than a professional in the business, he's an icon, a pioneer, and a true staple. I've gone through hours and hours of Alice Cooper interviews and I wish I could insert them all into one Roots Rockumentary, but alas, there is simply not enough time! 🎵This week's episode hasn't gone through the typical script-writing/editing process. This morning, I saw on Instagram a bass player I know posting about a curveball in his personal life. This bass player, named Steve Cook, was on a Roots Music History episode last year where we talked about a 619 year-old tree that stood on George Washington's property (and Betsy Ross, by the way, is said to have been buried under that tree along with several civil war soldiers....the tree's history is just incredible) and was being turned into GUITARS. This was such a cool story to me, I knew I wanted to cover it on Roots and it was one of the first stories I ever did here. Steve Cook was so helpful and knowledgeable. He came to my studio and BROUGHT THE GUITAR and even let me hold it! This was back when my channel only had maybe 2k subscribers, so I knew when I saw his video this morning about his wife's diagnosis I had to do something to help. To me, helping means roping in the Roots Music History family to shower him and his lovely wife with prayers, positivity and to share his go fund me fundraiser on my videos. 🎵In the early 2000s, Fender Guitar released a limited number of Number One Stratocaster Replicas - built to the exact specifications as Stevie Ray Vaughan's cherished 'first wife' guitar. However, while I was deep diving into Stevie Ray Vaughan's life and guitars for my channel, I came across what I believe is a fatal flaw in the reissues. The number one reissues have no sign of a Mickey Mantle autograph. Furthermore, nowhere on the internet (that I could find) does it even mention that Number One was signed by Mickey Mantle. EVERYWHERE talks about how LENNY (Stevie's *OTHER* guitar, given to him by his ex-wife) was signed by Mickey. I strongly feel as though Mickey's autograph on Number One was Stevie's favorite thing about the guitar. I am so disappointed that Mickey's signature isn't part of Stevie's legacy and I strongly believe Fender should reissue the guitar with the autograph (and give me half the proceeds because I figured it out.) 🎵Rock and Roll Icon Bob Seger's Story is inspiring to say the least. For decades, he (along with everyone else!) thought he would be a one-hit wonder with his hit song "Ramblin Gamblin Man". After being released from his contract with Capitol Records in 1971, Bob quit music and decided to go back to school. It wasn't long into this musical hiatus, though, Bob quickly realized music was his true calling. Since then, Bob Seger has had a six-decade career, selling more than 75 million records worldwide and making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. Seger was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012 and that doesn't even cover all the shiny accomplishments in between. 🎵I've been fascinated by Janis Joplin for a while. Maybe fascinated isn't the right word....but, perplexed. I've yearned to understand her...psychoanalyze her if you will... and understand how someone like her could come out with a rendition of Ball & Chain and Me and Bobby McGee that just hits people in their souls right where it hurts. A common reaction I get when I mention Sam Andrews or Janis Joplin from folks is "Oh, I wasn't really a Big Brother fan." or, "Yeah, not really a big fan of Janis Joplin." These reactions always peaked my curiosity further...because then I'd say...well what about the song Me and Bobby McGee ?? or Piece of my Heart?? or Ball and Chain ??? and then people would always reply with, "Oh, I love those songs. Just nothing else". So what else is there to Janis? I never anticipated making a roots on her, but I've scoured through hours and hours of her interviews over the years and recently was in someone's kitchen when I saw an old vintage photo of her on the wall. Seeing that photo of her reminded me of these rabbit holes of interviews I've gone through over the years and so when I got a few requests about her in my emails, I finally thought, you know what, it's time. 🎵Christina Grimmie, YouTuber and singer on The Voice was killed by her fan in an unfathomable murder at a meet & greet after one of her shows on June 10th, 2016. She never knew after posting her first video on YouTube that she'd quickly become friends with Selena Gomez and be rocking the stage on the competition show, The Voice in front of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and millions of American viewers. Wowing everyone with her cover of Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus, Christina Grimmie went on to tour with Selena Gomez, befriend Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, and many other bands. She had just begun recording her own music and going on tour with her band when her amazing story of stardom came to an end on June 10th, 2016. I personally remember watching Christina Grimmie on YouTube years ago, singing covers from her piano in her room. She had no idea that after a show she was playing in Florida, a fan would come up to her and kill her in front of her own brother. This is a tragic story, but her voice is amazing and her videos still bring me so much joy to watch. While mourning Conor's loss, he received a chilling letter in the mail. His son had written the letter just a week or so before his death. It read: "I want to see you again". In a rare interview, Charlie Daniels revealed he was inspired by the 1925 poem The Mountain Whippoorwill. The poet of The Mountain Whippoorwill had read a news article in a local paper gawking over a young man who came down from the poverty-stricken mountains of Georgia and blown away all the patrons at a fiddling contest at the local fair. He continued to compete, and continued to beat the best fiddlers in America with absolutely zero training and zero lessons! His name? Lowe Stokes. Lowe Stokes went on to be one of the best fiddlers in history, peaking around the 1920's and 1930's.
