The Mixed Six: Hot Takes on Ice – The Flash16 Sep 202300:30:43

The Flash is a spectacularly bad movie. Caleb, Spencer, and I got together to discuss exactly WHY it was so bad. I was part of a podcast called The Mixed Six for nearly 6 years. I had a blast making it and I’m proud of the episodes we made. It ended a year ago, but we came back together recently to record a reunion special episode. This is Hot Takes on Ice, a shorter podcast we did on a single take. I’m sharing it here because I think if you missed the Mixed Six when we were making on a regular basis, now is the perfect time to binge the series. I’ve mirrored the entire catalogue of the podcast on archive.org so you can listen to regular episodes, formerly Patreon-exclusive episodes, and mini episodes like Hot Takes on Ice. We’ll have a full new episode out on Monday.

Don’t forget to back The Night Clerk on Backerkit today! A full color 44 page scenario zine of architectural horror!

All of the main episodes are here.

All of the Patreon bonus episodes are here.

All of the Hot Takes on Ice and other mini-episodes and specials are here.

Patreon Preview: Don’t Cross the Stream – Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe11 Apr 201801:17:06

This is our newest RPPR Patreon bonus podcast series, Don’t Cross the Stream! In each episode, cast members like Caleb, Bridget, and Thad review and break down a title currently available streaming on Netflix. We then figure out how gameify it – either by creating new mechanics or random tables or creating entirely new mini-games. We also write up one of our ideas into a PDF you can use!  If you like it, please back the RPPR Patreon to access all of the episodes and PDFs today!

Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe is a weird movie. It is ostensibly a Chinese summer blockbuster sci-fi action movie, but it’s more like 3 or 4 movies in one. There’s aliens, kaiju, the Chinese Red Army’s secret archeological unit, an Elvis impersonator who sings about Genghis Khan, dramatic shifts in tone, and undead werewolves (I think).Bridget, Caleb, Fae, Thad, and I all watched the movie and analyzed it for the show. We also figure out how to turn this mess into a playable game. Up next is a playable mini-game by Bridget!

RPPR Episode 152: Picaresque Perfect19 Mar 201801:17:51

?????Sponsor: BPB Games is running a Kickstarter for their latest project, Savage Tokusatsu, a supplement for Savage Worlds that lets you use transforming heroes, kaiju, giant robots, and more! RPPR’s Aaron is working on this project, so be sure to check it out!

News: We have a new show for the RPPR Patreon! Don’t Cross the Stream looks at a title on a streaming site and analyzes it for its gameable material. We have 3 episodes online as of this episode. Check it out!

Synopsis: I have mentioned the Picaresque genre/style several times over the years on RPPR but I recently realized we haven’t done a full episode on it. In short, it’s about sympathetic outsiders who dabble in criminality, with no real overarching plot. Sounds like more than a few RPG campaigns I’ve been in. Bill and I talk about the genre, how it can be used as inspiration for RPG players and GMs, and more. We also have shout outs and an anecdote!

Game Designer Workshop Episode 17: Ruin and Party Fowl Update15 Feb 201800:55:34

Even though Red Markets is out, Caleb is still hard at work designing new games and fulfilling stretch goals. He gives an update about Party Fowl, a new card game currently in development. Meanwhile I have made a few breakthroughs while working on Ruin. I now have concrete ideas on how a game should work and have made progress on character generation rules. Hopefully I will have playtest rules at Gen Con this year!

RPPR Episode 151: Shotgun Summaries05 Feb 201801:33:22

Aaron, Tom, and I traveled down to Texas for PAX South 2018 and we had a blast! I finally got to play True Dungeon and we tried out multiple games that weekend like:

Collaborative Homebrew 101: A Cure for the Common Murderhobo – Panel at PAX South 201815 Jan 201801:00:55

We’ve all been there: After hours of meticulously planning an epic campaign, our players kill the quest NPC and run off after the first shiny thing they see. The cure for this problem may be easier than you think. With your help we’ll create a world from scratch, and then we’ll crowdsource some story hooks with the audience to create a whole campaign of our own. You can steal this adventure and use it in your own game, or steal the techniques and keep your players chomping at the bit. (The map referred to in the panel is included in this post. Click on it to see a larger version)

This panel was held at PAX South 2018.

RPPR Episode 149: Labyrinths and Mazes – Linear and Nonlinear Scenario Design19 Dec 201701:16:45

News: Patreon is keeping the current fee structure. If you canceled your patronage to RPPR because of the proposed changed, fear no more! Everything will be the same.

Synopsis: Labyrinths and mazes may seem similar but they diverge in one important aspect. A labyrinth has only one path to its goal (linear) while a maze features multiple paths to multiple destinations (nonlinear). Bill and I talk about designing linear and nonlinear scenarios and their place in creating great campaigns. We also have shout outs and anecdotes!

Architectural Horror and the Night Clerk Zine – Episode 19905 Sep 202301:08:18

Architectural horror is a subgenre of intention. Novels like House of Leaves, movies like The Shining, the Saw series, and games like Control can all be called architectural horror, but what does that mean? RPPR Special: War Game Report – Konflikt 4717 Nov 201700:41:09

We are trying something new here at RPPR! Over the last year, Aaron, Jason, Renee, and I have gotten into a miniatures war game, Konflikt 47. It’s a Weird World War 2 setting, with robots, werewolves, zombies, and teleporting ninjas (kind of). We’ve played multiple games, but I thought it would be an interesting experiment to podcast a full game. So for every turn, every player talked about their armies and their decisions, as well as a pre and post-game commentary. I took some photos to help illustrate what was happening. Keep in mind we played using proxy miniatures for several units AND we have not painted many of the miniatures. If you like this, please let us know and we will record more in the future.

RPPR Episode 147: Snippets of Adventure25 Oct 201701:10:55

Synopsis: As you may know, Caleb and I have another podcast called the Mixed Six, along with another co-host, Spencer. Interview with Greg Predmore about the Gobblin’ RPG18 Oct 201700:38:06

Gobblin’ is an original RPG setting and system where players control goblins settling and exploring a post-apocalyptic Earth. The creatures who crave violence, stupidity and chaos have just found the perfect means to obtain it. I interviewed the game designer, Greg Predmore of the Drunk and Ugly podcast, about how he created the game and how it works now. We’ve also posted an actual play of the game, which you can listen to here.

Check the game out on Kickstarter today!

RPPR Presents: Palladium Poisoning: Episode 8 – Rifts Adventure Sourcebook 2: Chi-Town ‘Burbs: Firetown & the Tolkeen Crisis07 Oct 201701:31:13

Note: I wanted to give you all a free preview of a Patreon exclusive series, Palladium Poisoning. I’ll post one more episode of it later this month. If you enjoy it, please consider backing our Patreon to get access to all of the episodes and be sure to check out Faust on Third Wheel!

Synopsis: Rifts Adventure Sourcebook 2: Chi-Town ‘Burbs: Firetown & the Tolkeen Crisis is an odd duck. It focuses on providing plot hooks for running adventures in a sprawling city in the shadow of the Coalition States. It also features a fully fleshed out team of adventurers out for revenge against the CS. Six fully written up adventurers with personalities and back stories who aren’t just punching bags or mary sues. It’s weird, I know. Shaun and I discuss what kind of TV show would best suit these characters.

Base Raiders is a fun game, but creating new super powers can be complicated. Someone asked for a podcast that helped clarify the process, so here it is. Game Designer Workshop: The Night Clerk Zine – System-less Scenarios with Caleb Stokes14 Aug 202301:00:24

A system-less RPG scenario is designed to be able to run in any system for a particular genre. Writing one is just as challenging as writing one for a single system. I’m launching a crowdfunding campaign on Backerkit for The Night Clerk, a system-less modern horror scenario, as a zine. In this episode, Caleb Stokes, author of No Security a collection of system-less scenarios, and I talk about them. I also go a bit into using Backerkit as a creator. We also discuss architectural horror and what that term means.

Sign up on the Backerkit pre-launch page to receive notification when the project goes live. It should start in early September!

Game Designer Workshop Episode 14: Upwind Kickstarter update and Weird Trip30 Mar 201700:45:15

Jeff Barber, designer of Blue Planet and Upwind, stopped by recently so we caught up on how Upwind has been progressing. While the main game is done, Jeff is hard at work on the first campaign. Creating a new style for Upwind adventures and getting feedback from playtesters, has been challenging. I’ve been busy working on a freelance project, but I wrote a micro-game to take a break from it. After I saw Honey Heist, I thought I could write a micro-game, so I created Weird Trip I uploaded the alpha rules and the first playtest to the RPPR Patreon, but I’ll eventually release it to the public.

D20 Swinginess and Combat – Episode 19824 Jul 202301:22:36

Many RPGs use d20s for resolving combat, like D&D, 13th Age, and Lancer. Caleb and I have been playing a lot of d20 games recently and we wanted to talk about the nature of d20 combat. It’s a very swingy system, where every combatant can miss in a single round, resulting in nothing happening. Can this problem be fixed?

Synopsis: With most of the RPPR crew out of town, Bill and I got together to discuss ways to add mini games inside a RPG. We’ve done it before in various RPPR games, but we haven’t fully explored the concept. Turning lock picking from a single skill roll to a puzzle can make the game more engaging for every player. However, figuring out what kind of mini game to add and how to integrate it can be tricky. We discuss some examples and how they work with the 8 types of fun, ranging from puzzles to board games or even other RPGs. We also have shout outs and anecdotes.

News: To celebrate the release of the first episode of our first Base Raiders campaign, I have put the main book on sale! Get Base Raiders in print for 30% off!

Synopsis:Instead of being lonely murderhobos, player characters can start and lead organizations in many games. Tom, Dan, and I discuss how to run a campaign about building an organization and how it differs from a standard campaign. The degree of new game mechanics necessary to run such a game varies so it’s possible to run this style of campaign in nearly any RPG. However, picking a game that has focused mechanics may result in a more engaging game. We also have shout outs and anecdotes!

RPPR Episode 136: Playing for an Audience12 Nov 201601:41:58

News: Puppetland is now out! I wrote two adventures for it and we will do an actual play of it in the near future. Stay tuned. Also, Faust has moved to Washington so he can work for Camouflaj and we wish him the best of luck!

Synopsis: Caleb and I discuss the challenges and rewards of recording games, either for podcasting or sharing with the community, or just for posterity’s sake. Technically, it’s easier now to record than ever before but how does it affect the game itself? It definitely makes a GM more self-conscious about what kind of games they run and how they are run. Is it worth it? That’s a question only you can answer, but Caleb and I go over the pros and cons of recording games. We also have some shout outs and an anecdote from this Patreon special game: Delta Green – Hearts and Minds.

If you want to learn more about running Fate system games or the Dresden Files as a setting, check this episode out!

If you missed any of the episodes, use our campaign page to find all of Season 1’s episodes.
