Whenever I discuss songwriting with students both at Rob’s School of Music in Suffern, NY, or virtually around the world, I’m generally met with the same response, "I have no idea what to write about. “ Writing a song isn't about trying to create the most amazing perfect timeless story ever created; writing a song is about discussing an emotion or moment that you feel strongly enough about to share with the world. I often reference a song I wrote in the late 2000s. This song, titled "never be alone, “is a tale of love lost. The person telling the story conveys to an unattainable love interest that no matter where she is in her life, she will always have a part of him; hence she will never be alone. During the bridge section, the song’s narrator realizes in forever dedicating a part of his heart to an individual who didn't love him back that the outcome is he will always be alone. The outro features a complete 180 on the chorus going from "you'll never be alone "to "I'll always be alone.” In reality, this song was never about a specific moment in my life, more of a combination of feelings, emotions, and observations from things around me. Every night my band performed this song, I would dedicate it to a different random girl in the audience. That girl always would become very emotional at the thought of a love song being dedicated to them. It didn't matter that the song wasn't about them; it didn't even matter that it wasn't about anyone; the sentiment and story are universally relatable. Have you ever loved a pet? A stuffed animal from your childhood? Have you lost a family member? Have a favorite food? We all feel these emotions, so grab your guitar or piano, throw some chords together, and just start rambling out a story about any of those emotions. Before you know it, you will have written a song.

It's hard to tell when someone or something will change your life. It's usually only when we look back we can see it with clarity. Paul Reed Smith created an instrument that changed my life. My dad bought me my first PRS guitar in 1999, an emerald green custom 24. That guitar was my first piece of pro gear; it changed my tone and passion for guitar forever. Fast forward 22 years, and I'm still in love with these instruments. They have fueled my musical career (I've been a PRS artist since 2006), supported my music school, allowed me to meet and work with incredible musicians, and given me a lifetime's worth of inspiration from Paul's passion for innovation. Tori Ruffin has a twenty-five-year professional career in the music industry. He has worked with some of the most acclaimed industry professionals and Grammy Award Winners, including Prince,rave unto the year 2000 las vegas 1999 Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Mick Jagger, Lenny Kravitz, American Idol’s Randy Jackson, and Flyte Tyme’s Terry Lewis & Jimmy Jam. As a live performer, he has performed at some of the nation’s major music festivals including the Essence Music Festival and the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Annual Festival, and toured numerous venues worldwide. His credits also include numerous movie sound tracks, concert specials and television shows. Among the late night shows he has performed on include NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman, and the Arsenio Hall Show.

From 1999 thru 2000 he served as a staff composer Universal Music Publishing – Rondor Music. Additionally, he has publishing and production credits with Capital Records and EMI Warner. He is currently producing & managing teen band, Bruce Flea, who are being considered by Octagon Entertainment Management, Capitol Records and Warner Brothers. He has also served as guitarist for the critically acclaimed band Fishbone and is the lead guitarist for Morris Day and the Time from the movie Purple Rain. He has performed on several “Gold” and “Platinum” albums, and his work as a session guitarist has earned him an exceptional reputation among industry peers and professionals.
