Shar Khentrul Jamphel Lodrö Rinpoché spent the first 20 years of his life herding yak and chanting mantras on the plateaus of Tibet. Inspired by the bodhisattvas, he left his family to study in a variety of monasteries under the guidance of over twenty-five masters in all the Tibetan buddhist traditions. Due to his non-sectarian approach, he earned himself the title of Rimé (unbiased) Master and was identified as the reincarnation of the famous Kalachakra Master Ngawang Chözin Gyatso. While at the core of his teachings is the recognition that there is great value in the diversity of all spiritual traditions found in this world; he focuses on the Jonang-Shambhala tradition. Thought to be extinct by many Western scholars, he found it held the most advanced teachings of Kalachakra (wheel of time) containing profound methods to harmonize our external environment with the inner world of body and mind.

In part two of this series, Khentrul Rinpoche encourages us to reflect on life rather than simply following others and samsaric values.

By then applying and stabilising knowledge of the Dharma to go beyond custom and culture, we develop greater awareness. When this awareness is accompanied by mindfulness and vigilance, we can bring balance to our negativities, transforming them into beneficial qualities, eliminating our weaknesses and building our strengths.

You do not need to be a rocket scientist or have studied this philosophy for many years to understand the basics of what these teachings are pointing to. While formal meditation and practicing sadhanas are a key part of our Dharma practice, they are not necessarily the important part. The key to our practice is not about achieving huge quantities of Dharma accumulations simply for the sake of quantity. Instead, it’s about developing our understanding, focusing on the quality of our minds, and integrating Dharma into our everyday life. What would you do in your life if you were completely without fear or worry? While fear can be challenging, it can also be used skilfully as an extremely powerful tool for deepening your spiritual practice. You can learn to work with uncertainty, facing reality head-on, and cutting through the self-cherishing and subconscious attachments that lie at the root of your fear. Fears and worry limit us from being fully present to our limitless nature. The fearless mind sees openness and opportunity where worry, anxiety, and terror once lived. You don’t have to be an advanced yogi meditating in a burial ground to make use of fear. In fact, the best opportunities are those arising right now in each moment of life. Therefore, take the first step to face your fears and transforming them into a precious gift for liberation.
