Halloween Ends Review: Is ThIs the Most Divisive Film of the Year? - Episode 11118 Oct 202201:59:46

When David Gordon Green got the greenlight to begin developing a new take on the “Halloween” franchise, he started by fleshing out a story that would resurrect Michael Myers and pit him against Laurie Strode once again. Initially, Green wanted to pitch two films that he would shoot back-to-back, which would ultimately serve as one complete story.

Those plans were scratched but Green still found massive success with the release of his first “Halloween” film in 2018. It didn’t take long for the studio to order sequels, which gave Green a chance to expand his idea from two films to three after realizing he had enough story to stretch across a trilogy.

The new plan involved an aggressive, action packed sequel for the second film and then what Green called a “love story” for the third.

Set four years after the events of “Halloween Kills,” Haddonfield is still haunted by the specter of Michael Myers but it doesn’t take long before the town discovers a new boogeyman in their midst…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put a butcher knife in the pumpkin as we say goodbye to Michael Myers and Laurie Strode with our review of “Halloween Ends”…

Hellraiser (2022) Review — Episode 11012 Oct 202201:35:00

Talks about a ‘Hellraiser’ reboot or remake had been in the works for years with original creator Clive Barker occasionally offering updates about the film.

Various writers and directors were pitched for the project for a franchise that had already seen a multitude of lackluster sequels. By 2013, Barker said he was set to direct and write the newest iteration of the series with Doug Bradley returning as Pinhead.

The project continued to languish away in development hell until 2019 when Spyglass Media Group got involved with David Bruckner hired to oversee the film after he found success with an underrated horror film called ‘The Night House.’ Bruckner ended up reteaming with the same writers behind that film with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski penning the script for the latest version of ‘Hellraiser’ along with a new Pinhead that would be played by a woman named Jamie Clayton.

Fascinated by the chance to explore themes like possession and temptation, Bruckner unleashed an updated version of the franchise where a girl battling addiction comes into contact with the Lament Configuration and all hell breaks loose…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to solve the puzzle box and promise we have such sights to show you as we review the 2022 reboot for ‘Hellraiser’…

Smile Review: Is This a New Contender for Best Horror Movie of 2022? — Episode 10905 Oct 202201:27:53

Raised in a small town near Akron, Ohio, Parker Finn grew up as a huge fan of film but particularly when it came to horror movies. Often intrigued by the covers of VHS tapes at the video store, Finn admittedly watched films that he probably had no business seeing at a young age.

Being traumatized by movies like Poltergeist and The Shining set Finn on a path where he was determined to eventually scare people with films of his own. That led him to make his critically acclaimed 2020 short film titled Laura Hasn’t Slept about a woman who seeks help from her therapist after she’s tormented by recurring nightmares.

While Finn was never a fan of short films that dovetail into a larger feature, he couldn’t help but decide to pull at a thread that eventually led him to his first full-length movie.

When a therapist witnesses a patient carry out a disturbing act of violence, she’s suddenly haunted by the same type of visions that could eventually spell her doom and she’s running out of time to stave off a gruesome death of her own…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we keep a close eye on anyone grinning at us as we review the 2022 horror film Smile…

Nightmare on Elm Street 5 and Freddy's Dead Review — Episode 10828 Sep 202201:37:18

The “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise had never been bigger following the release of the fourth installment in the series “The Dream Master,” which was then followed by a TV series titled “Freddy’s Nightmares.” New Line Cinema, which was nicknamed “The House That Freddy Built,” wasted no time ordering a fifth film with an idea that was originally pitched during pre-production on Part 3 about Freddy Krueger inhabiting the mind of an unborn child.

It wasn’t until years later when producer Sara Risher decided to develop the idea further. Sadly, script rewrites and the search for a director, which included both Frank Miller and Stephen King being considered, ended up with Stephen Hopkins leading the project.

The reception at the box office was a far cry from previous installments and that led to producers rethinking the future of the franchise. By 1991, New Line Cinema had started developing different projects and the studio felt it was time to move beyond “Nightmare on Elm Street.”

So it was decided that the sixth film in the series would be the last. Future Oscar winner Peter Jackson actually worked on a version of the script with several other stories considered including a continuing plot around Alice Johnson and the child she was carrying in Part 5.

Ultimately, the decision was made to go in a completely different direction with director Rachel Talalay decided to inject more humor into this installment that eventually including the final sequences being shot and shown in 3D.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we continue with our series on “Nightmare on Elm Street” by talking about Part 5 “The Dream Child” and “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare”…

Pearl Review: How Does the Prequel Stack Up to 'X'? — Episode 10721 Sep 202201:11:16

During the production of his hit slasher film “X,” director Ti West began developing a backstory for the character of Pearl as played by actor Mia Goth.

Working together, the director and star began crafting what would ultimately become a script for an entire prequel movie that would center around the murderous woman that haunted the farm where “X” took place.

Unlike that film, which took inspiration from movies like “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” West felt like he wanted to go in a completely different direction for the prequel while taking inspiration from films such as “The Wizard of Oz” and he later called this project a “demented Disney movie.”

Set in 1918, a young girl dreams of becoming a star while desperately seeking to escape the family farm where she grew up and she’ll do anything or kill anyone to get there…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to sharpen our pitchforks and pick up the pig off the front porch as we review the 2022 horror film “Pearl”….

Barbarian Review: Is This The Scariest Movie of 2022? - Episode 10614 Sep 202201:27:07

The relationship between horror and comedy has really exploded over the last few years, especially with filmmakers like David Gordon-Green and Danny McBride developing a new “Halloween” trilogy and former sketch comedy guru Jordan Peele winning an Oscar and becoming one of the most popular directors in modern horror history.

The latest convert is Zach Cregger, who first came to fame through his own sketch comedy series called “The Whitest Kids You Know.”

It wasn’t until he read a book called “The Gift of Fear” that he got inspired to write a scene based on the subject matter dealing with little red flags women are encouraged to recognize when it comes to the toxic behavior of the men around them. That single scene eventually spiraled into an entire idea for a film where a woman arrives at a house she rented only to find it’s already been occupied by someone else…

Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors Review - Episode 10431 Aug 202201:37:04

Due to the critical failure surrounding “Nightmare on Elm Street 2,” New Line Cinema was hesitant to green light a third film in the franchise but when original creator Wes Craven decided to come back on board to help write the script, the studio decided to move forward with the project.

Craven’s idea centered around a third and final film that would conclude the series, especially considering he didn’t initially plan on making any movies past the first one. His original script actually involved Freddy Krueger crossing over to the real world and tormenting the actors making a “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel.

The studio shot that down, although Craven eventually got his wish to make that film a few years later. Craven eventually teamed with writer Bruce Wagner to come up with the concept for the film, which initially started out as a much darker take on Freddy and the teens he was going after in their dreams.

Ultimately, the studio opted to go in a different direction with more outrageous dream sequences mixed in with some seriously dark humor. What resulted was a story about a group of kids locked away in a psych ward after each of them dealt with horrendous night terrors but it turns out they were all being haunted by the same man in their dreams…

Allegoria Review and the Best Low Budget Horror Films of All Time - Episode 10324 Aug 202201:15:28

Michael David Cummings — better known as Spider-One, the lead singer of the hard rock band Powerman 5000 and younger brother to Rob Zombie — decided to follow his sibling into filmmaking with his own movie after he had previously directed several of his group’s music videos.

The inspiration for his first film was based on his own writer’s block as a musician and how he struggled to live a creative life while also bowing to the demands of his own emotions not to mention the financial constraints that come along with that kind of career.

What resulted was an anthology centered around a group of artists tortured by their own obsessions and insecurities that ultimately ends up summoning all sorts of monsters and demons to haunt them…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to review the new Shudder original from Spider-One titled “Allegoria” and discuss the best low budget horror films of all time…

Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge Review — Episode 10217 Aug 202201:17:34

The 1980s served as the home to many great horror films but it was also a decade defined by sequels, especially when any movie found success with theater goers.

The immense popularity of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984 led New Line Cinema to immediately shift gears to a sequel that would ultimately be released less than a year later.

Unfortunately, original director Wes Craven declined to return despite being offered the gig because he found the script by writer David Chaskin just too ridiculous and he wanted no part of the next film in the franchise.

That’s when “Alone in the Dark” director Jack Sholder took over the project and he cast a relatively unknown young actor named Mark Patton in the lead role in a gender bending swap from a final girl to a final boy.

Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics with some praising the performances from the new cast with others pointing out the overtly homoerotic themes that highlight nearly every major scene in the movie with one publication eventually calling the sequel “the gayest horror film ever.”

Set five years after the original film, Jesse Walsh and his family move into the infamous house where Nancy Thompson was once terrorized in her dreams except this new teenager is actually fighting off Freddy Kreuger from taking over his mind, body and soul…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to do some pushups and make sure the bird cage is locked as we review the 1985 sequel “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge”…

Prey - Episode 10110 Aug 202201:09:54

After directing the critically acclaimed sequel “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Dan Trachtenberg began developing an idea for a new “Predator” filmed based on the existing property owned by FOX Studios.

It was a long and arduous process but one that Trachtenberg was willing to take after he first fell in love with the original film when he was only in the sixth grade.

He then teamed up with screenwriter Patrick Aison to craft an original story that didn’t necessarily have ties to any of the other spinoff films, particularly the one being developed by another writer and director named Shane Black.

Unfortunately, Trachtenberg’s dream project soon became a bit of a nightmare after FOX was bought out and merged with Disney and that put his film into upheaval.

Eventually the new powers-that-be at the studio gave Trachtenberg the greenlight but he was told that his film wouldn’t get a theatrical release and instead would be a straight to streaming product for Hulu, which was building an audience under the Disney umbrella.

That didn’t stop Trachtenberg and company from making a film that felt far bigger than anything a streaming service could hope to contain as he centered his story around a Predator landing on Earth in the 1700s and it soon clashes with a Native tribe including one particularly strong willed girl who is determined to make the creature her first real kill…

A Nightmare on Elm Street — Episode 10003 Aug 202201:34:08

Following a career that began directing x-rated films, Wes Craven decided to make the move into bigger features while combing the deepest, darkest parts of his psyche. He wrote and directed “The Last House on the Left” and “The Hills Have Eyes” — a pair of gruesome horror films that terrified audiences but also managed to essentially ostracize Craven because of the extreme content in his movies.

Realizing that horror was going to be the only genre that would have him, Craven was inspired by a story he read in the LA Times about a group of Cambodians, who had suffered through disturbing nightmares with many mysteriously dying in their sleep. That idea sparked a creative fire inside Craven as he transformed that story into a script where people were being killed by their dreams..

He named his villain after a schoolyard bully who had beaten him up as a child and after finding a producer in Robert Shaye and his upstart studio New Line Cinema, Craven had his next film ready to go. The story centered around a group of teenagers being stalked and tormented by a scarred up dream demon seeking vengeance against the children of the parents who killed him…

To celebrate the 100th episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we are launching our special series on the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series starting with the 1984 classic from director Wes Craven....

Jordan Peele's Nope — Episode 9927 Jul 202201:34:55

After signing a five-year development deal with Universal Pictures, Jordan Peele got to work on his next project following the massive success of both “Get Out” and “Us.”

Peele’s next film was announced in November 2020 with the writer and director saying he wanted to create something audiences would have “to come see” after penning the script at a time with incredible uncertainty surrounding the future of movie theaters.

Notoriously secretive about his projects, Peele didn’t reveal much of anything about his plans for the film other than saying that he was focusing on humanity’s addiction to spectacle while specifically naming films like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Signs” and “The Wizard of Oz” as influences on his writing.

The film also reunited Peele with Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, who had received rave reviews for his performance in “Get out” along with a cast that also included Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun.

The end result was a film centered around a family of Hollywood horse trainers who try to revive their struggling business by capturing the impossible on camera and then parlaying that into a sizable payday…

The Mist - Episode 9821 Jul 202201:29:48

Frank Darabont had been an avid reader of Stephen King novels for quite some time when he came across the 1980 novella called “The Mist” as part of the “Dark Forces” anthology.

Darabont immediately fell in love with the story and decided to adapt King’s book into a film that would become his directorial debut. What ultimately happened was Darabont made another King novella into a film with “The Shawshank Redemption” followed by yet another story called “The Green Mile.”

Finally in 2004, Darabont began working on a screenplay adaptation of “The Mist” that he intended to turn into a film after inking an overall deal with Paramount Pictures.

Darabont’s finished script actually altered the ending of King’s story into something different after a mysterious mist invades a small town, pitting neighbor against neighbor in a harrowing battle for survival.

The Black Phone - Episode 9713 Jul 202201:12:57

Back in 2004, Joe Hill was a struggling novelist who just couldn’t seem to get one his books purchased by a publisher.

Despite being horror icon Stephen King’s son, Hill was determined to strike out on his own, which is why he changed to a different last name from his father. Rather than write another novel, Hill decided to develop a group of short stories into a single collection with one of the stories centered around a little boy who gets kidnapped and he escapes thanks to help from a supernatural phone that connects him with the killer’s past victims who desperately want him to survive.

Years later, director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill got interested in adapting the story into a feature film, which required them to build out the story a little further from Hill’s original work.

What resulted was a terrifying vision about a maniac called The Grabber, who kidnaps and murders children in Denver in the 1970s and one boy along with his sister who will do anything to survive him…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to load up our phone with dirt and stay way from the van with black balloons as we review the 2022 horror film “The Black Phone”…

Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2 — Episode 9605 Jul 202201:21:19

A supersized group of episodes of “Stranger Things” combined with delays in production due to the pandemic led to season 4 being split into two separate parts with the first seven episodes dropping in May and then the final two debuting in July.

Despite only two episodes remaining in the season, “Stranger Things” packed a lot into these episodes with a nearly four-hour run time that helped reach a conclusion leading into the fifth and final season of the show.

When we left at the end of episode 7, Vecna’s true identity had been revealed along with his connection to Eleven while Nancy got locked in a nightmare vision after paying a visit to the Upside Down looking for answers to the terror that has been haunting Hawkins, Indiana for years.

Prom Night (1980) — Episode 9530 Jun 202201:16:52

The end of the 1970s and the start of the 1980s became primetime for slasher films after the success of “Halloween” in 1978.

By that time, studios were all looking for the next hit that could be made for cheap and then produce millions at the box office. It was around this time that director Paul Lynch had a production meeting with Irwin Yablans, who initially came up with the idea for the original “Halloween” when he pitched a film about a group of babysitters who get stalked by a masked killer.

Lynch had been attempting to come up with an idea for a horror film and it was Yablans who suggested building his movie around a holiday, which gave him the idea to craft a story surrounding a high school prom. Robert Guza Jr., who was a USC film student at the time, had his story adapted about a group of teenagers whose involvement in a tragic accident that comes back to haunt them.

Lynch struggled to find financing for the film until he cast Jamie Lee Curtis in one of the lead roles with the movie taking just 24 days for filming. The end result was an iconic slasher about a killer coming for revenge after a child is killed when a group of kids are playing a dangerous game…

Tremors - Episode 9422 Jun 202201:05:32

When writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock were working as editors for the United States Navy while helping to produce educational videos, they had a thought while standing on top of a boulder in the middle of the desert — what if there was something underground that prevented them from actually getting off this rock?

That spawned an idea for a monster movie about creatures that swim around under the dirt. The original working title was “Land Sharks” but that had to change thanks to a “Saturday Night Live” skit of the same name.

They eventually teamed up with director Ron Underwood, who had previously worked with National Geographic and he had a better understanding about the kinds of creatures that could potentially haunt this movie script.

After the writing duo received rave reviews for their film “Short Circuit,” they immediately began shopping around a new idea about some gigantic, underground worms that attack a small town called Perfection in the middle of nowhere Nevada.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to take photos with the Graboids and pole vault across some boulders as we look back at the 1990 cult classic “Tremors”…

The Thing 40th Anniversary Special - Episode 9316 Jun 202201:22:42

When John Carpenter was first contacted about potentially directing a remake of the 1951 classic “The Thing from Another World,” he was reluctant to sign onto the project.

The studio had already hired and fired “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper and Carpenter didn’t really see a path to a creative remake from a film he admired so much.

But it was his first chance to move from independent cinema to do a studio film so Carpenter eventually decided to take on the project while putting his own original spin on the concept where he wouldn’t try to hide the creature but rather explore the various incarnations of an alien who could assume the identity of any host it invaded.

Rob Bottin was brought on board to handle the practical effects for the film, which ended up eating a huge part of the budget but it also helped create many of the most iconic moments in the movie.

Set in a remote science station in Antarctica, a group of American scientists soon discover that they are not alone after an alien presence that can duplicate any one of them begins to systematically dismantle them one by one while proving that man really is the warmest place to hide…

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic horror films in history, Rewind of the Living Dead will grab the flamethrowers and get ready to do a blood test as we look back on John Carpenter’s “The Thing”…

Watcher Review, Scream 6 without Neve Campbell and the Best All-Time Thrillers — Episode 9208 Jun 202201:25:48

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean something isn’t really happening. That’s the premise behind the new film “Watcher,” which just opened in theaters as director Chloe Okuno teams up with “It Follows” star Maika Monroe for a thriller that feels like something that should have Alfred Hitchcock’s name attached to it.

In addition to “Watcher” opening in theaters, David Cronenberg’s latest film called “Crimes of the Future” is also being released with the reception to this latest movie mixed somewhere between a masterpiece and an all-out gore fest that had some viewers leaving the theater in disgust.  Plus we discuss what happens with "Scream 6" without Neve Campbell.

On the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we review the new film 'Watcher,' 'Scream 6' moving on without Neve Campbell and David Cronenberg's latest film and legacy...

Stranger Things Season 4, Vol 1 Review — Episode 9101 Jun 202201:34:44

Horror has always found a home on television but it’s hard to imagine anything capturing the attention of the pop culture zeitgeist like “Stranger Things” has done over the past few years.

Developed by the Duffer brothers, the series based in the 1980’s was equal parts nostalgia and great storytelling while making titles like Eleven and the Demogorgon household names across the globe.

When “Stranger Things” season 3 ended, the evil Mindflayer had been stopped but Eleven lost her powers and the gateway to the Upside Down has seemingly ended Chief Jim Hopper’s life.

Season 4 picks up with Eleven and the Byers’ family living in California, Mike and Dustin teaming up with a new friend named Eddie and a nightmarish presence suddenly lurking in Hawkins that is far scarier than any big bad before it.

For the first time on Rewind of the Living Dead, we review a TV series as we crank up the Kate Bush and remember friends don’t lie as we review “Stranger Things” Season 4, Volume 1…

Men - Episode 9025 May 202201:26:22

It was 15 years ago when writer and director Alex Garland first got an idea for a new script that he wanted to develop. At the time, Garland was only a screenwriter because his directorial debut didn’t come until 2014 with his film “Ex-Machina.”

The original idea that haunted Garland was a straight forward horror film centered around The Green Man — a creature of folklore that often appears in architecture around the world yet the meaning behind the symbols are often left up to interpretation.

Eventually, Garland moved away from The Green Man and instead became focused on the idea of one actor playing all of the male roles in the movie, which would then become the central plot point and mystery surrounding his ever evolving story.

The film finally settled on a grieving woman who escapes to the English countryside to get her mind off the tragic death of her husband but she soon realizes that not only is she not alone but the men in this quaint little village are all very much the same…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to shout to hear an echo down a tunnel and keep the mail slot closed as we review the 2022 horror film “Men”….

Friday the 13th Part 2 — Episode 8813 May 202201:27:38

The wild success of the first Friday the 13th movie had Paramount Pictures frothing at the mouth for a sequel but the initial idea was to essentially treat the franchise as an anthology where each movie would involve an entirely new scary story.

Some of the producers on the original film had a much different idea that the sequel should involve Jason Voorhees even though his appearance in the original film was essentially done in a nightmare sequence that was never expected to go any further than that movie.

Steve Miner, who was an associate producer on the original film ran with that idea and he signed onto direct the next movie after Sean Cunningham opted not to return to the franchise he helped start.

Miner came up with an idea that would carry the story five years into the future after the events in the original film as a new group of camp counselors are arriving to train for the summer ahead but they are completely unaware of the danger lurking in the woods….

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on mother’s sweater and sharpen the pitchfork as we review the 1981 sequel “Friday the 13th Part 2”….

The Night House — Episode 8712 May 202201:14:57

Writing partners Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had already managed to get several scripts made into films but there was plenty more left on the cutting room floor from projects that never got picked up or pieces of stories that were deemed too ambitious that the pair called their “murdered darlings.”

Armed with those ideas along with an intense desire to write something that would scare each other, Collins and Piotrowski started to develop an idea for a new script that would deal with a subject that was truly terrifying — the intense reality of mortality. Despite never having suffered through any intense grief in their own lives yet knowing that death is looming around the corner for all of us and the ones we love, they decided to explore that as a setting for a film.

The final story centered around a woman named Beth who is trying to make sense of her husband’s shocking suicide and the trove of secrets he was keeping from her that she begins to uncover in the wake of his death.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to crank up the stereo to listen to ‘The Calvary Cross’ and make sure the boat is tied to the dock as we review the 2021 thriller ‘The Night House’…

'The Boy Behind the Door' and 'The Djinn' Filmmakers David Charbonier and Justin Powell — Episode 8604 May 202201:25:41

In a special episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, David Charbonier and Justin Powell —the writers and directors behind “The Boy Behind the Door” and “The Djinn” — join the show for a far reaching conversation about how they got involved in the film industry after growing up as lifelong friends since kindergarten.

They’ll detail how a delay in making “The Boy Behind the Door” actually led them to creating “The Djinn” almost out of thin air, which ultimately because their first major film together. Charbonier and Powell will discuss making “The Boy Behind the Door” and what it was like working with a pair of super talented child actors along with the challenges that represents when making a very intense horror film.

The pair will also reveal their dream horror project and tease what’s coming next for them after two very well received films in a row. All this and more in the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead.

Master — Episode 8528 Apr 202201:17:13

When writer and director Miriama Diallo attended Yale University, she referred to the person in charge of her residential college as ‘master’ — an incredibly outdated term that the school tried to explain away as nothing more than a way to pay homage to a British system on which it was based while stating it had nothing to do with the ugly history of slavery in America.

Diallo just went along with the university’s rules but a few years after she graduated, she happened to run into the former head of her college and instinctively she called him ‘master.’

That’s when she realized the way she had been conditioned to just accept use of such a problematic title. It forced Diallo to really examine her history and how those experiences can truly shape a person but it also inspired her to write a screenplay loosely based upon some of her own experiences at college.

The finished product centered around three women of color at an upscale university called Ancaster where all of them face the specter of institutional racism, not to mention microaggressions and a haunted history at this school with a legacy of intolerance…

Choose or Die — Episode 8420 Apr 202201:12:55

Combining a modern tale of terror with a 1980s video game, first-time director Toby Meakins and writer Simon Allen decided to tackle a horror film that feels like it’s one part ‘Jumanji’ and another part ‘Black Mirror.’

The premise centers around a down-on-her-luck computer programming enthusiast named Kayla, who cleans buildings at night to help support her family, as they continue to grieve the loss of her little brother. When she’s not working, Kayla is hanging out with Isaac — another computer programmer with a crush on her and hopes to one day make it big creating his own video game.

In his spare time, Isaac likes to play with old computers and long forgotten software like the game he finds that promises the winner a massive cash prize.

After teasing Kayla that many of this prizes were never claimed, she decides to give this game a spin for herself. Kayla soon discovers that this game is really a curse and it’s nothing she can escape with just the stroke of a button….

Near Dark - Episode 8313 Apr 202201:16:48

As she prepared to direct her first solo feature, future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow wanted to film a Western movie but she found it difficult to secure financing and a studio to back up her vision.

So alongside co-writer Eric Red, who also penned the horror film “The Hitcher,” Bigelow shifted gears to combine her idea for a modern Western with the vampire genre that had become increasingly popular in recent years, especially after the success of “Fright Night” as well as another film called “The Lost Boys” that was set for release that same year.

Bigelow didn’t want to make the same kind of movie as traditional vampire stories steeped in gothic or even romantic themes. Instead, her interpretation was much darker and grimier than most vampire stories — in fact she never even uses the word vampire in her film.

Set against the dusty backdrop of the southwest, a young cowboy named Caleb falls for a beautiful girl named Mae but he soon discovers that one kiss from her comes along with a deadly invitation to join her family…

Morbius - Episode 8206 Apr 202201:23:02

With ownership over the entire “Spider-Man” catalog and the characters surrounding the friendly neighborhood webslinger, Sony announced plans to develop several new films that would branch out and expand the whole universe.

Following the surprising success around “Venom,” the studio moved swiftly to begin developing even more projects including one centered around Morbius The Living Vampire — a character that started out as a villain and eventually became more of an anti-hero in recent years. Ideas surrounding a live-action Morbius started many years earlier when director Stephen Norrington teased the possibility of introducing the character in the first “Blade” film but that never came to fruition.

Then in 2018, talks heated up with director Daniel Espinoza and Oscar winner Jared Leto about starring in a film adaptation based on the character.

The movie ended up serving as an origin story centered around Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant mind stricken with a terrible blood born disease that would eventually take his life until he decided to conduct an experiment that repaired his body but damned his soul with an insatiable thirst for human blood…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to drink some blood and wait for the vampire bats to fly past us as we review the 2022 film “Morbius”…

Tragedy Girls - Episode 8130 Mar 202201:16:32

Thanks to the reception from their first film titled “Patchwork,” writers Tyler MacIntyre and Chris Lee Hill were commissioned to rework a script that had similar overtones as a horror-comedy with female leads.

They eventually got inspired to transform the script into a slasher movie but MacIntyre and Hill wanted to tackle the project from a different angle than the typical point-of-view from the victims and instead put the killers in the driver’s seat.

Eventually they wrote a scene that took place on a bridge between a pair of teenagers making out in a car and a serial killer hanging around nearly and that inspired the idea that spiraled into the entire script.

Set in a social media age where likes and retweets matter far more than feelings, a pair of teenage girls decide to get bloody and up the body count in their hometown in order to turn themselves into a worldwide trending topic — hashtag murder scene!

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to check our retweets and make sure the killing doesn’t look like an accident as we review the 2017 horror-comedy “Tragedy Girls”…

X - Episode 8023 Mar 202201:12:03

Director Ti West had made several horror films throughout his career but he got to a point where he felt like he said all he needed to say in the genre.

Following a nearly 10-year-long break, West finally got inspired to return after realizing that he had never made a slasher movie but he was still trying to find the right idea that would inspire him to make another horror film. As a lifelong fan of filmmakers and filmmaking, West took inspiration from that for his next feature.

But rather than set his story around a group of filmmakers creating a horror movie, he decided to take a stab by setting his film inside the porn industry. West viewed horror and porn as similar outsider genres and that would serve as the perfect backdrop to combine a thirst for sex and violence in one film.

His idea followed a group of amateur adult filmmakers traveling to a remote farm to shoot a movie they all thought would make them famous but little did they know that this adventure would turn into a real life bloodbath…

Rob Zombie's Halloween - Episode 7916 Mar 202201:39:03

A less than enthusiastic reaction to 2002’s “Halloween: Resurrection” left the famous horror franchise in limbo as producers tried to figure out the best way to go forward.

Numerous scripts were produced that included Michael Myers facing off with the Cenobites from “Hellraiser,” another featuring the return of Jamie Lloyd and even one that would serve as a prequel of sorts to take place during the events of “Halloween III: Season of the Witch.”

Ultimately, Dimension Films reached out to rock star turned director Rob Zombie to see if he would be interested in taking a stab at a new “Halloween” movie. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, Zombie jumped at the chance to make his own version of the film but only after original creator John Carpenter gave his blessing by saying “make it your own.”

Zombie ended up writing the script that he would direct while essentially remaking the original film while adding plenty of his own unique touches. With so much control over the project, Zombie was able to cast the film his way including the addition of unknown actress Scout Taylor-Compton in the lead role as babysitter Laurie Strode, who has a terrible family secret that will soon come back to haunt her…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on our masks and get ready to face the boogeyman as we discuss Rob Zombie’s “Halloween”…

Fresh - Episode 7809 Mar 202201:21:13

Writer Lauryn Kahn grew up loving horror movies so she was very excited for the chance to actually make one of her own. When she was looking for inspiration, a friend who had previously written a horror film said that she based the script around “the scariest thing” possible for her.

That gave Kahn the idea to write her story from the female perspective in the world of dating while also addressing the fears that women deal with everyday like something so seemingly mundane like walking to their car in a parking lot past dark.

She eventually teamed up with director Mimi Cave, who saw the project as an allegory about how you actually leave pieces of yourself behind after getting out of a toxic relationship.

The film centers around a woman named Noa, who is looking for love but fed up with the dating scene until she becomes instantly smitten with a charming doctor named Steve, who she meets at a grocery store one night. Noa soon discovers that what’s lurking behind Steve’s sterling smile is something far more sinister than she could ever possibly imagine…

Freddy's Nightmares — Episode 7702 Mar 202201:04:53

Throughout the 1980s, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” film series was one of the most popular horror franchises with fans regularly flocking to the theaters to see what new group of teenagers would be sliced and diced in their dreams by the demonic Freddy Krueger.

After three films with a fourth on the way, New Line Cinema — the studio that produced the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films — decided to take a stab at bringing Freddy to the small screen by developing a new series based around the popular horror villain. Because Freddy was such a killing machine in his movies, the producers opted against a serial season with one continuing storyline, the decision was made to make the show an anthology.

That meant Freddy and by extension the man behind the makeup, Robert Englund, would serve as a host of sorts introducing each episode and then appearing in only a few particular stories during a season. The show ended up serving as a launching pad for many famous careers including Brad Pitt, Kyle Chandler and Bill Camp.

The first episode in the series directed by Tobe Hooper and titled “No More Mr. Nice Guy” actually told the origin story behind child killer Freddy Kreuger and the parents from Elm Street who sought revenge after the legal system failed them.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to sharpen our razorblades and dust off our red and green sweaters as we discuss the newly re-released series “Freddy’s Nightmares”…

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) — Episode 7622 Feb 202201:53:22

There’s never been a shortage of ideas when it came to making more sequels, reboots or remakes of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” but the latest incarnation didn’t start taking shape until 2018 when Legendary Pictures obtained the rights to the iconic horror franchise.

Following the success of his “Evil Dead” remake along with the breakout hit “Don’t Breathe,” Fede Alvarez got interested in the project and signed on as a producer with newcomer Chris Thomas Devlin handling the script.

Production started in Bulgaria in 2020 but the studio was unimpressed by the initial footage so director David Blue Garcia was hired to take over the project.

Alvarez eventually revealed details surrounding the plot, which would serve as a direct sequel to the original film, with an older Leatherface being unleashed on a whole new group of people crazy enough to wake him from his murderous slumber….

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to make sure we’ve got our keys and the power tools are ready to go as we review the 2022 sequel “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”…

Attack the Block - Episode 7517 Feb 202201:26:07

After he got car-jacked near his home in South London, future writer and director Joe Cornish started to wonder what would have happened if a meteor fell from the sky and came crashing down to the ground at the same time he was being robbed. How would that change the dynamic of that situation?

Cornish believed that he would probably turn to his tormentors to ask them to have his back in such an unpredictable and potentially dangerous moment. That spawned an idea for Cornish, who had grown up admiring directors who had wildly creative ambitions but not the budgets to match, yet they somehow made it work.

Like Steven Spielberg with “Duel” or James Cameron with “The Terminator.” He decided to create a 10 page treatment set in the world of science fiction and fantasy but rather than just write the script, he actually visited several youth clubs all around London to interview kids to find out how they would react to these different and sometimes bizarre situations. Armed with dozens of interviews, Cornish started to put together his story about a gang of street-wise kids who end up at the center of an alien invasion in their own neighborhood…

The Boys from County Hell - Episode 7410 Feb 202201:06:22

There have been hundreds of different takes on vampires on television and film but writer and director Chris Baugh had never seen anything set against the backdrop of his home in Northern Ireland.

That’s why he decided to take a stab at a script based around his home country but while everybody knows that “Dracula” author Bram Stoker is Irish, there’s far less knowledge surrounding the influence an ancient Irish legend supposedly had on him while writing one of the definitive horror novels in history.

A blood-drinking fiend called Abhartach was one of the first ever stories about an undead creature rising from its grave and the original stories told about how he could only be killed by a particular type of wood, which led to the theory that it gave Stoker an idea for the creature he would write about in his book.

Baugh ran with that idea while adding mythology about a small town in Ireland where the people felt shortchanged after their local legend was all but swallowed up thanks to Stoker’s novel that sparked a century’s long obsession with vampires. The finish product involved a group of locals who accidentally awaken the ancient evil living under their town and the fight to keep Abhartach from feasting on every one of them…

The Fog - Episode 7303 Feb 202201:17:24

Following the massive success of his breakout film “Halloween” in 1978, director John Carpenter inked a two-film deal with AVCO Embassy Pictures for his next two follow ups.

Because he was known for the horror genre after creating one of the most iconic slashers in history with Michael Myers, Carpenter was expected to follow that up with another terrifying film. The inspiration for his next film came during a trip to England with his producing partner and then girlfriend Debra Hill when they visited Stonehenge.

At the time they visited, Carpenter remarked at the creepy fog bank that had rolled across Stonehenge and he wondered what could be hiding inside it.

That was enough to spark an idea for a story that Carpenter and Hill wrote together about a group of settlers who conspired to crash a clipper ship named the Elizabeth Dane, captained by a man named Blake who was attempting to find a home for his leper colony in the area.

The sabotage killed Blake and all of his people and his gold was used to found the town of Antonio Bay but 100 years later, the doomed captain returns for revenge.

Prisoners of the Ghostland — Episode 7225 Jan 202201:10:31

Hardcore film fanatics probably already know the name Sono Sion from his many works in Japan where he’s been hailed as “one of the most idiosyncratic artists of his generation.”

From films such as “Suicide Club” to “Love Exposure,” Sion had a reputation for grotesque violence, extreme eroticism, surreal images and complex narratives.

In 2018, Sion planned his first overseas production with an English language film that would star Nicolas Cage, who described the project as “the wildest movie I’ve ever made.”

The original script for the film was actually written as a more straight forward action film but Sion had to add his own personal touches, which the director says “added a little bit of weirdness.” The film is set against a dystopian society ruled over by a ruthless Governor who sends Cage’s character out into a nuclear wasteland to retrieve his granddaughter, which is a code name for one of his sex slaves.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to check the explosives strapped to our bodies and grab a samurai sword as we review the 2021 sci-fi fever dream known as “Prisoners of the Ghostland”….

Scream 5 - Episode 7118 Jan 202201:53:34

As far back as 2011 just after the release of “Scream 4,” there were talks about a fifth film in the series being developed by director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson.

Unfortunately, a lukewarm response to the fourth film put those plans on hold and then sadly Craven passed away in 2015 after he had directed all four films in the “Scream” franchise. It wasn’t until 2019 when Spyglass Media Group acquired the rights to “Scream” and then four months later it was announced that the same creative team behind the surprise horror hit “Ready or Not” would be writing and directing the newest film in the series. Soon after Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette signed on to return to for “Scream 5,” which at this point was just being called “Scream” again with filming taking place in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The story centered around a new group of teens in Woodsboro being terrorized by a killer in a ghostface mask and before long Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley were all being drawn back to the town that had been haunting them for more than two decades…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to dust off our Ghostface masks and charge our cell phones as well review the 2022 film “Scream”…
