-Why does the coffin look so fake?

vendredi 20 septembre 2024Durée 01:24:20

Dr. Dan Ellin, Historian and Archivist from the International Bomber Command Centre, joins Sean to discuss The Dam Busters (1955).

Discussion Points:

-Dan discusses his love/hate relationship with the film and it's portrayal of Operation Chastise.

-The absence of major motion pictures about RAF Bomber Command.

-The importance of collective memory regarding the Second World War.

-The use of the Dam Busters march at 'Bomber' Harris's funeral.

-The enemies in the film: bureaucrats, Whitehall and red tape.

-The fantastic casting in the film.

-The incredible flying during the making of the film.

-Putting RAF Bomber Command into historical context.

-The lack of the raid on the Sorpe Dam in the film.

-The impact of the Official Secrets Act on the film.

-Sean does his best to translate very English aspects of the film for American listeners.

-The optics of history and the loss of nuance.

-The influence on this film on George Lucas when he was making Star Wars (1977).

-The things that Britain leans back on in times of adversity.

Raised Questions:

-Do people see RAF Bomber Command as either 'Dam Busters or Dresden'?

-Are the historical details faithfully intact?

-How important are myths to a country?

-Was it really difficult for Barnes Wallis to get the idea for the raid accepted?

-Why do the British love an underdog story?

-Did the Americans have better PR and spin?

-Would you love to see Peter Jackson's The Dam Busters?

-Does the film tell the story of what happened rather than what was meant to happen?

-Why is Guy Gibson portrayed a certain way in the film?

-Does the film lack nuance?

-Does the film serve as a good starting point for people who may not know the story of the Dam Busters raid?

Further Reading Recommendations:

-'Guy Gibson' by Richard Morris.

-'Dam Buster Barnes Wallis: An Engineers Life' by Richard Morris.

-'The Fire' (Original Title: Der Brand) by Jorg Friedrich.

-'The Strategic Air Offensive Against Germany' by Noble Frankland and Charles Webster.

lundi 29 juillet 2024Durée 02:08:42

Welcome to the revamped Review It Yourself.

Discussion Points:

-Sean and Sarah keep up to date with a 24 year old film.

-Sickness monitoring.

-David Dunn and his lack of emotional response.

-"David is clearly very depressed": Sarah's stunning analysis continues.

-Mass Death Events.

-The unspoken moments in the film, particularly after the gun scene.

-Sarah argues that every scene in a film "should earn it's weight" and right to be there.

-In the last 10 minutes Sean and Sarah discuss the plans for the future of their respective podcasts and the reasons behind the new co-hosting format.

Raised Questions:

-Is it foolish to review a film twice on a podcast?

-Does this film have an amazing opening scene?

-Does this film begged to be watched again and again?

-Is it normal to tip a full glass of water in the bin?

-The moodiest babysitter in the history of films?

-The decision of whether to follow your family's traditions or your friends.

-The children having to keep their two worlds completely apart, due to their father's controlling behaviour.

-The balanced-nature of the film.

-How great films like this can transcend cultures and divides.

Raised Questions:

-Is Enoch Powell too heavily focused upon?

-Did you know about the Bristol Bus Boycott?

Film Recommendations:

-Kes (1969).

-Bend It Like Beckham (2002).

-The Wait...What Trio don't feel the need to introduce themselves.

-Norbit is horrendous.

-Diana The Musical. Liam goes off on one.

-Dave checking the football scores causes anarchy.

Raised Questions:

-Why didn't Liam like Mike Bassett?

Beverages With Bill 1: Small Soldiers (1998)

dimanche 8 janvier 2023Durée 55:51

"Just because you can't see our audience, doesn't mean they aren't there".

It's the big ELEVENTH collaboration between Bill from Bill Reads Bad Reviews and Review It Yourself.

Sean has imported some Root Beer for the occasion, which he hasn't had since he was in America-6 years ago.

Will the Rose-tinted glasses be shattered?

Discussion Points:

-Sean drops the #BreakingBill entirely. Hello #BeveragesWithBill

-Bill is thanked for being such a good sport regarding Sean's spoof episode of BRBR.

-The first film you've ever seen at the cinema.

-Whether the film stands up today.

-The original tone of the film and the cuts that were made before the cinematic release.

-The injuries sustained by humans in this film.

-Sean wants more respect for Air Stewards.

-Bill appreciated the resourceful use of kitchen appliances.

-That sentimental ending.

Raised Questions:

-Have Bill and Sean gone soft?

-How has Sean not seen Gremlins?

-Does Root Beer taste like Fizzy Calpol?

-Does Root Beer taste like a dentist's purple mouth-rinse?

-Is Christy's boyfriend the most 90's character ever?

-Why does everyone have motorbikes in this film?

-Why can't Sean say Dunst?

-Did you pick up on the Air Steward character aspect?

-Was Alan just on a massive amount of drugs the whole time?

-Did you get the puns behind the soldier's names?

-Why Yosemite?

Quotes of the episode:

-"It's filth"-Sean is not impressed by Root Beer.

-"No, I know they live in Gorgon"-Bill gets exasperated-glorious.

Thanks for listening!

dimanche 8 janvier 2023Durée 24:18

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) Review:

Sean and Bill had this extended chat during a recent recording and it seemed too good to leave on the cutting room floor.

Discussion Points:

-The problem with the Avatar films.

-Both give their own unique takes on the film.

-The missed opportunity to explore the human's reasons for coming back to Pandora.

Raised Questions:

-Why were Sean's expectations so low?

-Do people dismiss the films too easily?

-Why do people bin their 3-D glasses?

Thanks for listening!

Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007)

jeudi 5 janvier 2023Durée 36:13

Sean reviews a film alone! He finally got around to watching Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007).

Discussion Points:

-Sean forgets many, many actor's names.

-The brutal tone of this film compared to the original Halloween (1978).

-The amalgamation of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) and Rick Rosenthal's Halloween II (1981), to craft this film.

-How the film could have been unintentionally funny.

-The Scream (1996) film series, for some reason.

Raised Questions:

-Did you miss the Halloween 'Pumpkin' introduction?

-How many of the Halloween films have you seen?

-Would you describe this film as 'realistic'?

-Did Michael talking irk you?

-Can Sean go an episode without doing a horrendous American Accent?

-Did you almost-nearly laugh?

Thanks for listening!

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) with Jack

mardi 27 décembre 2022Durée 42:46

Sean's friend recommended this film and then wanted to review it. Sean had never seen it before.

Boy, was he surprised...

On Christmas Eve no less!

Discussion Points:

-Sean implores you not to listen to this podcast.

-The massive twist in the film.

-Sean bins off the trivia because all podcasts use IMDB anyway.

-Sean's friend desperately tries to bring some structure to the review.

-The era in which the film was made.

-The fetish-heavy dynamic in this film.

-Tarantino's knack of writing dialogue.

-The moral ambiguity of most of the characters throughout.

-Sean's mate was NOT happy with The Village (2004).

Raised Questions:

-Did you sneak in a late-night viewing of this film like Sean's friend did?

-Did you think that the film was a Western?

-Are any films as crazy as this?

-Can a flaming man pop corn?

-Is Sean's tactic of bringing guests on to keep him on-topic working?

-How slowly does that border patrol officer close that blind?

Quotes of the episode:

-'I'm in"-Sean is sold on the film after the opening gas station scene.

-"Let's just focus on the first half first".

-"It's sh*t, it's not worth the watch"-Sean's mate succinctly reviews The Village (2004).

Recommendations for other films where-the-wife-has-died-causing-a-crisis-of-faith-in-their-religious-husband:

-Signs (2002)

Elusive: Bigfoot Abroad (2020) with Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

vendredi 23 décembre 2022Durée 01:05:52

Merry Christmas Eve Eve!

Sarah from Weird Horizon returns to listen to Sean choke on a bacon sandwich.

Elusive: Britain's Cryptids-Available on YouTube under the title 'Elusive Bigfoot Abroad' (2020).

This documentary explores Bigfoot sightings in Britain.

Discussion Points:

-Being from England, Sean and Sarah obviously start their catch-up by talking about the weather.

-Sarah and Sean both fell asleep whilst watching this documentary-but this is not an indictment of the film, but the weather.

-This has already happened in history two species of hominids have co-existed.

-The seeming-balanced viewpoint of the film with regards to whether these creatures could actually exist.

-Most people don't go off the beaten track.

-How we are taught not to explore forests.

-Trunk or treat.

-The human needs for answers.

Raised Questions:

-What are Cryptids?

-Did the myth of the Kraken come from real-life giant squids?

-What's the word for the big animal family tree?

-Can you be biased when someone speaks with your accent?

-Have you ever seen a wild deer?

-Have you ever got lost in a forest like Sarah?

-Is Sean a hussy for American podcasters?

-Has conspiracy become a bit of a dirty word?

Quote of the episode:

"We're basically living on the crust of a big sponge"- Sarah rivals David Attenborough.

Guest Info:

Sarah has "Discussions on the spooky and the esoteric, the counter-cultural and the just plain weird."-Her words.

Her voice is so calming, I'm trying to talk her into doing a 'Help you to sleep' podcast.
