| Episode 204 : WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color) | 29 Aug 2024 | 01:02:55 | |
We're covering another wrestling game, sort of? WWF Betrayal is actually a side scrolling beat em up for the Game Boy Color, featuring 4 of the biggest stars WWF had to offer in 2001. This game was developed by WayForward, who make some of the nicest retro-styled games to this day. Was this a good blend of a solid license and a great developer? We also answer a question posed last episode about wrestler themed fast food meals, and some of your other pressing questions. Want to jump right to the show? Start at the 8:00 mark! This week we're looking at Ghost in the Shell for the Sony Playstation, a game based on the manga and universe of the anime we were all familiar with at the time. Is this a game worth playing if you love the anime, hate the anime, or just generally like mecha? We've played through it again to let you know our thoughts. | Episode 194 : Suikoden (PlayStation) | 06 Feb 2024 | 01:30:13
We're covering another request - Suikoden for the PlayStation! This game is a classic style JRPG that adds a large cast of playable characters, large scale battles, and an upgrade system that allows you to really modify your party in many ways. This game led to a series that was prevalent on the PlayStation 1 and 2, but has faded out over the years, although there is an HD remaster on the way. We played the original to see how this one holds up today! Also discussed, new foods and games for 2024, memories of gaming with friends, and maybe the most devisive video game question we've answered -- Is Zelda an RPG? | Episode 104 : Silent Hill (Playstation) | 31 Oct 2019 | 01:46:38
For the final show of #Retroween2019, we're taking a look at the OTHER big horror series that started on the Playstation -- Silent Hill! This series has as of late fallen truly silent, but for a while it was a staple series that took us into a hellish nightmare where we could never tell what was real and what wasn't. Does the first trip to Silent Hill still hold up today? We give you our thoughts on that. Also discussed, Halloween candies, Halloween gaming traditions, and of course some of the spookiest sound effects ever. Want to skip right to crashing your car in a foggy town? Retroween2019 is in full effect, as our first regular Halloween episode is here! This time we're taking a look at Sony's Medievil, a game where you play as a skeletal knight, fighting off the armies of the undead! Many 3d platformers from the 32-bit generation haven't held up well, but is this one the exception to that rule? Do you like to play retro RPGs? The RPGs of the 8, 16, and 32-bit era of games are sometimes a little tough to get into, but we're going to take them on, one at a time, week by week. Weekend Warriors is our chance to do just that! This first episode is covering the first few hours of Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System. Every week we will play another 5 hours or so of the game, find a checkpoint, and then talk about that week of the game, up until we beat it. This way, you could casually play along with us if you like! | Episode 102 : Conquest of the Crystal Palace (NES) | 26 Sep 2019 | 01:22:32
It's our 2nd Patron requested episode! Patron "Burgerchamp" has selected Conquest of the Crystal Palace for the Nintendo, a game none of us had played before, and a game with a surprising developer! This action platformer has a lot going for it -- most notably a dog you can summon -- but is it something you should hunt down to try? Also discussed: the new Contra Rogue Corps demo, Apple Arcade, and some listener questions about console failures, bad rentals, and games that made us a little sad. | Episode 101 : Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast) | 12 Sep 2019 | 01:01:01
As we mentioned last episode, starting with episode 101 we are adding another generation to the podcast : Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance are now systems we consider to be retro, now that the Dreamcast is 20 years old! And we chose Space Channel 5 to kick off the next 100 shows with a CHU! Ulala is a reporter for Space Channel 5, and she's been sent to uncover the truth about a new alien menace-- by dance-off! Will Ulala's first game save the day, or is this another music-based game that may be more fun to watch than play? Listen to hear what we thought! We also kick the show off with a short discussion about the most recent Nintendo Direct, and as always answer a stack of listener mail! Want to start right (up left down chu chu chu) at Space Channel 5? Pick it up at the 9:50 mark! __________________________ If you would like additional bonus episodes of Retrovaniacs or to request a game we must cover, our Patreon is located here : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21041333 If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? | Episode 100 : Tiger Handhelds | 29 Aug 2019 | 01:39:23
We made it to 100 episodes, and we aren't slowing down at all! For our 100th episode spectacular, we've got a collection of Tiger handheld (and maybe a non-Tiger one) from the early days of handheld gaming to tell you about. We're going to talk about 7 games total, from Double Dragon and concluding with our highly anticipated look at the MC Hammer game that Billy mentioned probably 95 episodes ago. It's been a long road to get here, but at the end of that road -- we start to look down the next road... We also answer a batch of listener mail covering their thoughts on Tiger handhelds, special gaming rulesets, and thankfully -- not pee. Want to skip right to the handhelds (for some awful reason...)? | Episode 99 : Fortified Zone (Game Boy) | 15 Aug 2019 | 01:15:04
Our first Patron requested game, Kyle VonKubik (aka ObeyKube of OneRadTee.com) selected Fortified Zone for the Nintendo Game Boy! A game none of us had played or even heard about before, this 3/4 top view action shooter has a real Metal Gear feel to it. Was this just another clone of a more popular franchise, or did this do something new and different, especially for a handheld console that had a lot of forgettable games over it's long lifespan? We also answered some listener questions about possibly covering movies, modern gaming concerns, and... pee? Want to skip right to the game, start at 8:10! Want to skip to the pee question? Master Higgins is on a quest to save his fiancee from Baron Bronsky, and we join him for all 25 levels of his trip. We also answer some listener questions on mini console wishes and our best game hauls (but not game halls). Want to skip to Gunstar Heroes? | Episode 96 : Rygar (NES) | 04 Jul 2019 | 01:02:27
This time we take a look at Tecmo's Rygar for the NES! Based loosely on the 1986 arcade game of the same name, on the NES they completely redesigned the tale of The Legendary Warrior from a side-scrolling action arcade game into an early "Metroidvania", that existed before the 'vania part of that portmanteau was even a thing. Did they succeed, or was this another case of a solid idea that just wasn't developed enough? We also discuss our thoughts on Mario Maker 2, the sequel to the Wii U Mario Maker, which we covered in full WAY back in Episode 10. Want to skip to Rygar? | Episode 193 : Body Harvest (N64) | 15 Jan 2024 | 01:08:24
It's our first episode of 2024, and we're starting it off with a Patron requested game, Body Harvest for the Nintendo 64 as picked by Joey H.! This game was developed by the company that would go on to make Grand Theft Auto III and change the landscape, and it has a lot of the things we'd see in that game-- but is there a reason this never had the success as their later offerings? We'll tell you what we thought! | Episode 95 : Earthbound (SNES) | 21 Jun 2019 | 01:37:35
We try to cover a full-length 16-bit RPG as we take a look at Earthbound! A sequel to Mother, a game not released in the US, when Mother 2 arrived in the states with a new name change and a questionable advertising strategy, it did not get received well... however, it has developed a dedicated cult following over the years, and so we took our time and played this fully to determine if this cult hit is deserving of its reputation as an underappreciated hit. We also answer some listener questions on Burgertime, the upcoming TG-16 mini console, and... Enya? Want to skip to Ness and his friends? | Episode 94 : Kid Dracula (NES) | 06 Jun 2019 | 01:17:33
Now that we have access to this 1990 Famicom game outside Japan via the newly released Konami Castlevania Anniversary Collection, we finally get a chance to play Kid Dracula-- a game in the Castlevania timeline where you play Dracula's son (or maybe just a kid Dracula) as he attempts to regain his father's kingdom after a 10,000 year nap. Does this belong in the same collection with some of the best games of the NES / SNES / and Genesis eras, or was this game better left as an odd footnote to a highly regarded series of games? We let you know what we think. We also answer a fairly large pile of listener mail, and discuss odd peripherals, answer questions about this podcast itself, and of course more Taco Bell related questions. Our first PC title (although it's been re-released on pretty much everything), we take a look at Grim Fandango, a later graphic adventure game from the folks who brought us Monkey Island and Full Throttle. Is this as notoriously obtuse as some of the earlier games in the genre, or is this more of a case of technology and experience allowing some improvements to an old PC staple? Also discussed, possible guest hosts, some listener recommendations, and pre-NES / Master System era games, and if we would cover any. Want to skip right to Manny? This episode we visit a past Sega franchise that has been relatively quiet of late, the Shinobi series and master ninja Joe Musashi in what may be the best game in the series -- Shinobi 3 for the Genesis. How does this one stack up to other 16-bit era platformers, and the rest of the series in general? Listen to see! We also share our thoughts on several topics such as the Final Fantasy series, new retro consoles, sports titles, and other non-Shinobi topics when we answer several listener questions at the end of the show! The sequel to Super Mario World, but featuring Mario's sidekick Yoshi as the main character, Yoshi's Island kicked off the Yoshi series of games. Did his first solo outing solidify Yoshi as more than a glorified mount for Mario? We played it again now, and share our thoughts on this beautiful looking 2d title, with some notable flaws. Also discussed what Billy thought about Skate or Die 2, answered some listener questions, and avoided talking too much about Sekiro. Want to get right to the game? We take a look at a sequel to the skateboarding game that everyone owned, Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble. Where the original was more of a collection of skating games, this sequel is a single player skateboarding adventure game. Does this game end up being a totally radical experience, or a completely bogus waste of time? We also talk about Sekiro way too much, answer a handful of listener questions about classic gaming, and we talk about systems we haven't covered much and why. After being told we constantly nag on the Sega Genesis system for it's... interesting sound, we picked a game this week that at the very least has a very solid soundtrack, Rocket Knight Adventures! This was one of Konami's Genesis exclusives, and it led to several sequels that were on multiple platforms, but how well does does Sparkster's initial journey hold up? We played through the game to find out. Also discussed, some new Switch downloadable titles, the just announced Konami classic collections, and most importantly -- Taco Bell orders. | Episode 88 : Zelda II The Adventure of Link (NES) | 07 Mar 2019 | 01:31:46
Maybe our most divisive episode yet, we dive into the sequel to one of the undisputed NES classic games (the Legend of Zelda) as we cover the side-scrolling follow-up Zelda II : The Adventure of Link. Many people swear this game is the worst in the series, while many others love the fact that it's so different while still maintaining many staples of the Zelda series. Even just the three of us have different opinions on what did and didn't work on Link's sophomore adventure. If you are one of those that love this, or someone that hated it, we try to back up our opinions here carefully, but we are sure to step on some toes with this one. As always, we cover a few listener questions, and take a criticism of our slights on the unique Sega Genesis sound. Want to get right to the adventure (of Link)? Everyone is playing the new Resident Evil 2 remake, so we thought it was a great time to look at what Resident Evil would look like if it was based on Jurassic Park instead of zombie movies -- Dino Crisis, originally released on the Sony Playstation in 1999! Do Resident Evil tank controls make a dinosaur based survival horror game still worth playing, or is this a case of two great tastes that don't really taste great together? We also read off several listener mails, covering game recommendations, comments about past shows, and best games on worst systems (and vice versa). Want to skip right to Dino Crisis? | Episode 83 : Die Hard Trilogy (PlayStation) | 24 Dec 2018 | 01:16:00
UPDATE: Added our voices back in. Hooray? Ho, ho, ho! It's Christmastime at the Retrovania dot net HQ, and so we've pulled out a holiday classic - Die Hard Trilogy! Ok, so there is nothing in this game that even remotely mentions Christmas, but this is a game that contains 3 completely separate games based on the first 3 Die Hard movies. Is this a rare case where you get a lot for your money, or are all three of these games worth throwing off the top of the Nakatomi building? Also discussed, our favorite current games that came out in 2018, our biggest disappointments of the year, and our personal favorite game we covered this year on Retrovaniacs! It's the Christmas episode that nobody asked for! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? | Episode 82 : Dynamite Headdy (Genesis) | 14 Dec 2018 | 01:00:28
A Treasure game for the Genesis, included on most Genesis collections, and yet none of us have played it? This is exactly the situation faced this week, as we review listener recommended Dynamite Headdy! Will this game be found deserving to be on the Genesis game collections, or is Headdy just another bad 16-bit mascot? We've gotten more questions via Retrovania.net, so we end the show off answering 4 of them! If you have a question, send it on over for a future episode, and we will try our best to not butcher your names. Want to skip around what else we've been doing? | Episode 81 : Metal Gear Solid (Playstation) | 01 Dec 2018 | 01:03:52
Since the Playstation Classic is coming out next week, and we already looked at several other games that are going to be on the mini-system, we decided to take on the first of the modern era Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid! Does this game deserve to be on the classic, or is this another game that might be better left in our collective memories? We take a listener question on video game music, and bands that play instrumental covers of that same music, and we push the finest comment form on the internet, once again. Want to skip what we have been playing? Then crawl by those security cameras to 12:15! __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? | Episode 80 : Wild Guns (SNES) | 13 Nov 2018 | 01:18:06
YEEHAW! To be honest, much like everyone else we assumed we'd have been too busy with Red Dead Redemption 2 to play something that wasn't western and / or was a really long game. So -- we're covering Natsume's Wild Guns on the SNES, a game that is short and western-ish. Does this game still provide a rootin'-tootin' good time, or should this one be put out to pasture? We also take a listener question regarding ROM hacks, talk about the PS Classic lineup, and the surprise Amico announcement and what we think it will be. Want to skip right to the run-and-gun action? Set your pocketwatch to the 8:55 mark, partner. __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? | Episode 79 : Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street (NES) | 31 Oct 2018 | 01:17:55
It's Halloween 2018! We're celebrating this year by covering maybe the most iconic horror monsters, at least of the 80s - Freddy and Jason, and the most 80s games possible on the LJN-made games for the NES. Sure, they've already duked it out on the big screen, but which of these slashers will have the better NES game? Want to skip around what else we've been doing? | Episode 78 : Castlevania Symphony of the Night | 18 Oct 2018 | 01:19:44
It's the first Halloween episode of 2018, and we've decided to take a closer look at Symphony of the Night before the new HD re-release comes out at the end of the month with Castlevania : Requiem. Does this game still have fangs, or is it a miserable pile (of secrets)? We also covered the 16-bit Castlevanias previously, in Episode 35, way back in Halloween 2016. We also answer a listener question about bootlegs, and Billy has a terrifying memory that resurfaces... __________________________ If you enjoy this podcast, why not write a review wherever you download it from? | Episode 77 : Shenmue (Dreamcast / remakes) | 03 Oct 2018 | 01:29:10
We broke from our own set of guidelines for this one, we're looking at Shenmue in honor of the HD re-releases of Shenmue 1 and 2, and the probable upcoming 3rd game in the series in 2019 (maybe). We dive into the first game in the saga of Ryo Hazuki, who is sent around Yokosuka, Japan to find information on black cars, Chinese people, and of course sailors, as he hunts down Lan Di to get revenge for his father's death. Does this game hold up at all in 2018, or was a game that was pretty clunky by 1999 standards even moreso now? We also answer a listener question on our favorite Halloween films, which kicks things off for the remainder of October as we celebrate #31DaysofHalloween across this podcast, Youtube channel, our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages... and also in our hearts? | Episode 74 : Bonk's Adventure (TurboGrafx-16) | 23 Aug 2018 | 01:12:16
We revisit the TurboGrafx-16 yet again, as we cover what became the mascot of the system in the US, Bonk, in his first outing. Did the little caveman with a giant noggin have what it takes to hold up to Sonic and Mario and make the TG-16 a force in the market again? Well, obviously not-- but Bonk still had a lot of promise. As a reminder, Kyle VonKubik's t-shirt Kickstarter still has a few weeks left, it's almost fully funded, but there's still a little bit of time to order an exclusive retro-design shirt! | Episode 73 : Shadowrun (SNES / Genesis) | 07 Aug 2018 | 01:19:47
A listener request from Kyle VonKubik (see more below), this episode we definitely bit off more than we could chew, covering 2 completely different RPGs on the same source material, the pen and paper FASA RPG, Shadowrun. Do either of these versions do the cyberpunk classic justice, and what makes them different? We try to cover a lot in this hour+, and it probably got a little messy. Kyle VonKubik is also doing a Kickstarter for an amazing t-shirt design, Arkado Returns, which ends September 12th, and at the time this was posting is already over halfway there! It's a pretty rad set of designs based on iconic arcade classics including QBert, Frogger, Pac-Land, KLAX, and loads more. | Episode 72 : Top Hunter Roddy and Cathy (Neo Geo) | 19 Jul 2018 | 00:55:39
SURPRISE! We weren't sure what we were covering this episode when you last heard from us, but due to Jeremy's broken leg situation, we had to make it something you could play on Switch-- and the re-release of Top Hunter: Roddy and Cathy (originally on the Neo Geo) seemed like a solid choice. None of us played this before, so we went into this with no pre-conceived notions! Does this one hold up, or is it another case of "this may have been fun 25 years ago, but what is this?" We also push a neat retro-gaming t-shirt Arkado Returns by listener Kyle VonKubik, who also recommends our next game-- Shadowrun! | Episode 71 : Super Metroid (SNES) | 05 Jul 2018 | 01:18:52
This time we take a look at Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo, a game that is highly regarded as a classic game. Instead of seeing if it's a good or bad game, we instead focus on what makes this game so good-- And does it still play well in 2018? We also take a listener question about our most nostalgic game purchase, and that leads us down memory road as we say goodbye to a retail icon and it's wonderfully mysterious game cage in the 80s/90s. How effective is a game where Paper-Rock-Scissors is the method for combat? Listen to find out! We also discuss the other games in the Alex Kidd series, including his foray into the Genesis, before Alex got sent to the rest home for former mascot characters. It's a pocket-sized episode of Retrovaniacs, this time looking at the first handheld Zelda game -- Link's Awakening (and the color re-release that came out a few years later)! Does this game hold up to the best the series has to offer, or will this wallow with the later DS entries in the area of "this was a better idea than reality"? We also discuss the new Atari VCS Indiegogo success (?) and Jeremy P gets way too excited about the Intellvision Entertainment announcement. Want to skip straight to Link? | Episode 64 : Kirby Super Star (SNES) | 16 Mar 2018 | 01:02:13
In honor of the release of Kirby Star Allies (and in no way because we just picked a game at random and Jeremy P was slow to edit the show), we're posting our look at Kirby Super Star for the Super NES. This game, which is also on the SNES Classic, is different from the previous Kirby releases, but how different? This was our first look at Kirby as a whole, so did we love it, or did we determine our previous lack of interest in Kirby was completely valid? Listen and see! Also discussed, our thoughts on retro-styled Kickstarter releases Yooka-Laylee and Mighty No. 9, now that we've taken some time to play them. We loved Banjo-Kazooie, and everyone on Earth loved Mega Man, but what did we think of the spiritual successors to both? Next episode : Billy is back and Jeremy P forces another TG-16 title on everyone -- Silent Debuggers. FOR REAL THIS TIME! __ Listen, you read this far, which means you listen.
