| 23: Building a Being Mode Based Society, Part 7: Is it REALLY Possible? | 06 Apr 2021 | 00:43:11 | |
In this episode, we use the final section of Erich Fromm's To Have or To Be as a springboard for our discussion. In it, he poses the question, is the movement to a society that accommodates our humanity and our human needs more directly really possible? We review all the elements he has suggested that are necessary in order to make that shift, and discuss whether we think it is possible, as well as his evaluation of whether it is possible. Here is a list of the changes Fromm mentions are necessary to make the switch and episodes in which we discuss them in detail. Sane Consumption (Episode 14 & 15) A Democracy in which all people are fully active (Episode 15) Maximum decentralization in industry and politics (Episode 16) Ending Bureaucracy - Implementing Humanistic Management (Episode 16) Ending brainwashing methods in industrial and political advertising (Episode 20) Closing the gap between rich and poor nations (Episode 20) Implementing a universal basic income/guaranteed yearly income (Episode 20) Liberating women (and men) from patriarchal domination (Episode 21) Creating a Supreme Cultural Council (Episode 22) Ending Fake News/Implementing a successful system of effective information dissemination (Episode 22) Separating scientific research from use only for profit and military expediency (Episode 22) Ending nuclear weaponry (Episode 22) We also explain why Lacey is wearing a hat with a sticky note on it, and announce the date for our upcoming interview with Melissa Bernstein of Melissa & Doug Toys, and her new venture, Lifelines, an emotional wellness community. In this interview with Amelia Pang, the Author of Made in China: A Prisoner, An SOS Letter, and the Hidden Cost of our Consumption, we discuss the dark realities of the source of much of our retail purchases. We make the connection to Erich Fromm's writings from the 1970's about the need for Sane Consumption (Episode 14), as we see that part of the problem around the labor camps that produce much, if not most, of the products we purchase, is the need for incredibly speedy turnarounds on products due to consumer demands. We also talk about ways consumers can help to end this inhumane practice of abusive forced labor for the humans in China. | 20: Building A Being Mode Based Society, Part 4: Ending Brainwashing, Giving a Guaranteed Yearly Income & Closing the Poverty Gap | 10 Mar 2021 | 00:45:02
In episode 20, we continue our discussion from before our month on the theme of love - in Fromm's ideas on how to build a society based on the being mode - a society where we can live and flourish in our human nature, and not have to suppress it due to the needs of the demanding capitalistic machine. We discuss three of the many ways he suggested we do that. Ending brainwashing methods in political and industrial advertising, closing the gap between rich and poor nations, and implementing a Guaranteed Yearly Income. Fromm was for basic income! That is exciting and enlightening news. We talk about why its important to end the brainwashing (spoiler alert - we have lost control of our minds as a result!) and close the gap between the rich and poor nations. We also share many reasons why a basic income just makes sense, and would be a great idea to implement. We start out by discussing the probable passing of the stimulus package, discussing exciting upcoming interviews with Amelia Pang and Sherry Turkle, as well as a recent new blog post by Lacey entitled I Hate the Word Should (Found at LaceyDelayne.Medium.com). | 19: LOVE THEMED FEBRUARY: Self Love & Self Care - It's not Selfish and its SUPER Important | 04 Mar 2021 | 00:47:04
Yea, we know it's already March...but we had to do oneeee more episode on the theme of love! To start episode 19, we discuss where we are about a year into the pandemic with regards to recovery as a nation from a health perspective as well as an economic perspective. We also reveal what our exciting news is for April 3, the 1st year anniversary of the podcast. And marvel at the fact that we have been doing the podcast for a year now! Diving into the content, we discuss what self love is, what it isn't and why it is important. We also mention some ways we can show ourselves self love once we have realized it is an awesome thing to prioritize in our lives. The outro is a throwback to episode 14, in which we discussed the ugliness of bureaucracy and the need for a new model for interaction and management of peoples and societies. Special thanks to Richard Berry for the reading. Our new email address is rethinkinghumanitypodcast@gmail.com, please feel free to shoot us an email sharing your thoughts on the podcast! | 18: LOVE THEMED FEBRUARY- Do We Have a Shared Definition of Love? And other themes from Bell Hooks' Book All About Love | 27 Feb 2021 | 00:45:53
In this episode we discuss bell hooks' book All About Love. We examine the confusion of the meaning of love. Our primary relationships form our idea of love which can include dysfunction and at times abuse. Our emotional and physical connection with others can be confused with love. We discuss love being a verb and not a noun. Love is an active choice. Society presents a consumer driven version of love both in movies, literature, and advertising. We begin the conversation about self-love and the importance of being able to love yourself before loving others. | 17: LOVE THEMED FEBRUARY: What is Love? Is Love an Art? And Six Different Types of Love | 06 Feb 2021 | 00:45:54
In Episode 17, we begin a series for the month of February focused on love. To begin, we pull our springboard for discussion from Erich Fromm's book The Art of Loving (Free here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKwIlz-dzx4&t=2706s) In it, he presents six different types of love: Brotherly, Motherly, Fatherly, Erotic, Self-Love and Love for God. We give an overview of each of these types of love as well as a basic definition of what love is, from Fromm's perspective. He proposes that love is an art, and it is thus something to be learned and practiced, and must be prioritized in order to become something a person is skilled at. At the beginning, we briefly discuss the Vox Article "What You're Feeling is Grief" by Nylah Burton: https://apple.news/AfeI0D1ydSpWD09ChXaE9ZA It mentions how COVID is affecting our mental health in an increasingly intense manner, as we are running out of ways to cope, since many of our coping mechanisms are things we have to avoid right now. Also, the amount of loss we are feeling has continue to build, including the inability to mourn the many hundreds of thousands of deaths that have occurred over the past year since we've had to cut back on gathering together. We also talk about an event we are looking forward to on April 3, and some exciting interviews we have scheduled for this month around the theme of love, sex, and relationships. | 16: Building a Being Mode Based Society, Part 3: Decentralization & Ending Bureaucracy | 01 Feb 2021 | 00:47:11
In Episode 16, we dig into the meat of more ways we can move to a being-mode based society, by two means Fromm mentions in To Have or To Be, Chapter 9: Decentralization and Ending Bureaucracy. He says we must replace it with Humanistic Management, and that in a bureaucracy, it is impossible for all members to be participating in a genuine and authentic way. This is why if we are to move to a being-mode based society, where all individuals are valued and heard in the decision making process of their communities, then bureaucracy must be replaced with a more humanistic management style, which values individuals as the humans they are instead of the things bureaucracy transforms us into. Also, think about this: Most likely, the majority of the frustration you face in getting things done with corporations and government agencies are due to bureaucracy. We'd all be better off with less of it! We also discuss some of Lacey's recent adventures abroad, and some big things ahead for April!
