In this episode, we use the final section of Erich Fromm's To Have or To Be as a springboard for our discussion. In it, he poses the question, is the movement to a society that accommodates our humanity and our human needs more directly really possible? We review all the elements he has suggested that are necessary in order to make that shift, and discuss whether we think it is possible, as well as his evaluation of whether it is possible.

In this interview with Amelia Pang, the Author of Made in China: A Prisoner, An SOS Letter, and the Hidden Cost of our Consumption, we discuss the dark realities of the source of much of our retail purchases. We make the connection to Erich Fromm's writings from the 1970's about the need for Sane Consumption (Episode 14), as we see that part of the problem around the labor camps that produce much, if not most, of the products we purchase, is the need for incredibly speedy turnarounds on products due to consumer demands. In episode 20, we continue our discussion from before our month on the theme of love - in Fromm's ideas on how to build a society based on the being mode - a society where we can live and flourish in our human nature, and not have to suppress it due to the needs of the demanding capitalistic machine. We discuss three of the many ways he suggested we do that. Ending brainwashing methods in political and industrial advertising, closing the gap between rich and poor nations, and implementing a Guaranteed Yearly Income. Fromm was for basic income! That is exciting and enlightening news. We talk about why its important to end the brainwashing (spoiler alert - we have lost control of our minds as a result!) and close the gap between the rich and poor nations. We also share many reasons why a basic income just makes sense, and would be a great idea to implement.

In Episode 17, we begin a series for the month of February focused on love. To begin, we pull our springboard for discussion from Erich Fromm's book The Art of Loving (Free here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKwIlz-dzx4&t=2706s) In it, he presents six different types of love: Brotherly, Motherly, Fatherly, Erotic, Self-Love and Love for God. We give an overview of each of these types of love as well as a basic definition of what love is, from Fromm's perspective. He proposes that love is an art, and it is thus something to be learned and practiced, and must be prioritized in order to become something a person is skilled at. 
At the beginning, we briefly discuss the Vox Article "What You're Feeling is Grief" by Nylah Burton: https://apple.news/AfeI0D1ydSpWD09ChXaE9ZA It mentions how COVID is affecting our mental health in an increasingly intense manner, as we are running out of ways to cope, since many of our coping mechanisms are things we have to avoid right now. Also, the amount of loss we are feeling has continue to build, including the inability to mourn the many hundreds of thousands of deaths that have occurred over the past year since we've had to cut back on gathering together.
We also talk about an event we are looking forward to on April 3, and some exciting interviews we have scheduled for this month around the theme of love, sex, and relationships.

In Episode 16, we dig into the meat of more ways we can move to a being-mode based society, by two means Fromm mentions in To Have or To Be, Chapter 9: Decentralization and Ending Bureaucracy. He says we must replace it with Humanistic Management, and that in a bureaucracy, it is impossible for all members to be participating in a genuine and authentic way. This is why if we are to move to a being-mode based society, where all individuals are valued and heard in the decision making process of their communities, then bureaucracy must be replaced with a more humanistic management style, which values individuals as the humans they are instead of the things bureaucracy transforms us into.
Also, think about this: Most likely, the majority of the frustration you face in getting things done with corporations and government agencies are due to bureaucracy. We'd all be better off with less of it!
