lundi 18 septembre 2023 • Durée 39:17
In this episode, I am speaking with Emily Bron from International Lifestyle Consulting. Emily helps people relocate for retirement or for remote workers to find their ideal destinations. Emily has relocated to a foreign country multiple times in her life. You will probably pick that up by her accent. She is relocating again and helping others do the same.
Read the Emily’s bio:
After living and working in 4 countries (3 continents), experiencing several immigrations, changing professional fields (engineering, research, banking, IT, and travel consulting), and being an avid traveler with a cultural discovery mindset, she created International Lifestyle Consulting to advise how to find the best matching place for you to relocate abroad for a better quality of life, work, or retirement.
- As a professional Baby Boomer and remote worker, she is relocating again!
- Her guidance and advice are based on the following:
- Her multi-immigration and life experience of relocating alone and with family
- Daily follow-up on the selected destination news and immigration updates
- Firsthand travel experience at each location
- Thorough destination inspection with relocation in mind
- Real-time updates for each recommended area
- Knowledge of immigration options and the relocation process
- Information from local contacts and resources

lundi 11 septembre 2023 • Durée 36:36
In this episode I am speaking Steph Silver who is the author of the book Anywhere, USA: A Memoir.
This will be a bit of a different kind of episode. I have known Steph for many years and I had no idea that she had an upbringing with an incredible amount of upheaval. I want you to hear a bit of the story from the book, the process of writing her memoir, and what she got out of the book from a personal growth perspective.
Read Steph’s bio:
Steph savors the little things wherever she goes—like flowers in a field, sunlight through the trees, or sounds of laughter. Moving over thirty times before she was seventeen, traversing between campgrounds, fully furnished homes, and homeless shelters, Steph used her optimism and grit to rise to a place of comfort, peace, and personal success. She is now on a mission to enhance as many lives as possible and to help humans thrive.
Her first book, Anywhere, USA is a memoir that reveals some dark sides of a turbulent childhood while shining light and optimism at every turn. Despite close calls with disasters, both natural and man-made, Steph believes that if she is good enough, strong enough, or works hard enough, one day she’ll become worthy of the love and security she seeks. Who she ultimately chooses to become and if she’ll transcend her circumstances are questions Steph must answer for herself more than once in this gripping coming-of-age story.
Steph founded VINE Collective in 2018 after parting from a branding agency she helped grow over 12 years. Through individual and team coaching, retreats, public speaking, and brand work, VINE cultivates meaningful and memorable experiences that bring forth the most exceptional versions of each person and/or brand.
Steph also uses her desire for human connection, authentic experiences, and profound growth to train, educate, and amplify leaders and businesses who live through their mission, vision, and passion as host of MVP Business Podcast. She’s deeply driven to build relationships and help people authentically grow, succeed, and connect.
When she’s not managing her team, visiting with clients, or connecting with friends, Steph can usually be found cooking, gardening, dancing, or mountain biking with her two sons.
After listening to this episode, I want you to think about friends and colleagues. How well do you really know them?
I have known Steph for over 10 years and she is a really together person but after I read her book, I wondered how did she survive her childhood to become the person she is today.
Many of us had very difficult childhoods and not everyone is here today but people like Steph can be an inspiration for all of us.

lundi 3 juillet 2023 • Durée 33:22
This is a rebroadcast episode that is publishing during the July 4th holiday of 2023. In this episode I am speaking with Fawn Germer, who is the author of Coming Back: How to Win the Job You Want When You've Lost the Job You Need. I have used a lot of concepts from Fawn’s book. My favorite is being relevant is more important than your experience.
This podcast was originally published in March of 2021.
Please read her official Bio:
“Fawn Germer is the irreverent, beloved best-selling author of nine books including the Oprah book, Hard Won Wisdom. She has been a keynote speaker for more than 80 Fortune 500 companies and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize four times for her work as an investigative reporter. Fawn’s first book was rejected by every major publisher in the United States, but Fawn would not give up until it was the No. 1 nonfiction bestseller that Oprah loved.
Her newest book, Coming Back was released by St. Martin’s Press in January 2021. The book shows how to turbocharge your career by changing the way you change. Fawn is an inspiring storyteller and life adventurer. She’s learned plenty the hard way and is as authentic as they come. She interviewed hundreds of the most accomplished leaders of our times, including famous CEOs, prime ministers, presidents, Nobel Peace Prize winners, scientists, Academy Award winners, and many other trailblazers who revealed that success is born in risk, and power comes from consciously disabling your doubt and self-esteem issues.”

lundi 23 août 2021 • Durée 32:50
Description:
This week I am speaking with my wife Lotus. It has been a while since I recorded an expat episode and I thought that you would enjoy her perspective.
We have been living in Ajijic Mexico for 3 years. We just sold our condo in Austin Texas and by the time this episode is published I hope we have a contract accepted on a house in Ajijic.
I want you to hear her perspective because before moving to Mexico, she had never lived or worked outside of Texas. I on the other hand grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Chicago, and worked for 40 years in Austin, Texas. During that time, I worked in close to 40 different countries. All of the teaching I did around the world left me very culturally adept. My wife did not have that experience.
You will hear that my wife is extremely happy here and if would have told me that 5 years ago, I probably would not have been skeptical at best.
Now rather than a word from our sponsor, I have an announcement and an ask for you.
Starting in November of 2021, I will be scaling back some of the content creation for the Career Pivot blog and this podcast.
I want and NEED your input. I have created a survey that covers both the blog and this podcast. Please take a moment to stop now and go to CareerPivot.com/survey2021 or click here.
I want to know which types of episodes you have liked, what you would like more of and I very much need your input on the show notes, like do you even read them.
I will be keeping the survey open through the end of September of 2021.

Discussing Encore Careers with Encore Network Leader with Janine Vanderburg #236
lundi 16 août 2021 • Durée 40:01
Description:
This week I am speaking with Janine Vanderburg who wears multiple hats today. I am speaking with her in this episode about her leadership role in the Encore network.
Let me read some of her bio:
An encore champion and longtime community activist, Janine Vanderburg is in her encore career leading Changing the Narrative in Colorado, a campaign started in 2018 to change the way people think, talk and act about aging and ageism.
In 2019, Janine created the Age-Friendly Workplace Initiative, to “reframe” older workers to business leaders and to make businesses more aware of the benefits of intergenerational workplaces, and On the Same Page, a campaign to encourage intergenerational conversations about ageism. This year, Janine partnered with the local PBS station to produce and broadcast a series of intergenerational conversations about critical topics, including the role of the arts in advancing social justice, digital divides during Covid-19, health equity, and ageism.
Janine served two terms on the Denver Commission on Aging, where she facilitated a strategic planning process to help Denver become an age-friendly community and initiated the Commission’s social media presence to challenge the stereotype that older adults are digitally incompetent. In 2018, she earned the Mayor’s Diversity and Inclusion award for her advocacy for older adults.
Committed to leveraging the talents of people of all ages to benefit the community, Janine currently chairs the Encore Network Leadership Council. Her favorite saying: “We are the leaders we are looking for.”

School Teacher to Evocative Fiction Author to Writing and Editorial Coach #233
lundi 26 juillet 2021 • Durée 28:51
Description:
This week I am speaking with Elizabeth Sumner Wafler. Elizabeth is a former school teacher, an aspiring women’s fiction author, and an editorial and writing coach.
Let me read you a snippet from her website:
As an evocative writer, I bring strong images, memories, or feelings to mind. You will find my work filled with vivid metaphors, unique prose, and detailed descriptions that make you feel part of the scene. And alliteration. I go gaga over glorious alliteration. That's the kind of book I enjoy reading myself. My stories will always involve friendship and a love interest for my main character. You'll find swoon-worthy love scenes, but the sex will be "behind closed doors." You will find conflict at every turn, tension on most pages, and "cliffhangery" scene and chapter enders. I hope my overall style pleases and resonates with you and further deepens your reading experience.
I enjoy working with other writers through my freelance editorial business Four Eyes Editorial. I live with my husband and cairn terrier in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where I can be found reading on my screened porch, at a yoga class, at a farmer’s market in search of the perfect heirloom tomato, or at one of the area’s vineyards, enjoying a glass of Virginia wine.

samedi 17 juillet 2021 • Durée 37:28
Description:
This week I am speaking with my good friend John Tarnoff. I have had John on the podcast in episodes 208, 152, and 120. John has been the most frequent guest on the podcast in the 4 and 1/2 years I have been producing this podcast.
I consider John Tarnoff to be a peer, colleague, and friend. John specializes in helping those in the 2nd half of life reinvent themselves. In 2017, he published his book, Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career. Here is a snippet from his website:
After my startup went bust, I decided to go back to school to earn a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. I didn’t think that I wanted to become a psychologist but I hoped to learn more about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what lessons I needed to learn to move forward.
Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, my mission is to support professionals over fifty to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. I’ve created a more personal-growth approach to career development, vs the traditional HR skills-based paradigm – starting with the notion that your ideal second-act career is already inside you.
John recently wrote a blog post that really impressed me called, Adopt a Career Growth Mindset and Never Think of Yourself as “Unemployed”.
In this episode, we will be discussing the content of that post.
