What is a deep-seated lie? It’s a false feeling, a false belief, a false mindset, a false statement that is difficult to change because it has been there for a long time. It is deeply seated in you.

Need help motivating your child when it's too hard? Does your child throw up their hands, stomp their feet, push away their workbook, cry, and just give up when it's too hard?

As adults we forget that learning to make the bed can be hard. Learning to read and multiply can be hard. Sharing toys can be hard and learning how to get along can be messy. We’ve been making the bed, reading, multiplying, sharing, and getting along for years, right?

Out of default, we can respond to our children by saying things like: “It’s not hard. You can do it.” “Why can’t you see that…” “Don’t you know that…” I’ve repeated that 5 times and you’re still saying “I don’t know.”

All they while, they’re thinking, “No, actually I can’t do it. I already tried a few times.” Or “It feels too big and daunting to me.” Or “I don’t want to do it. It looks like too much work.”

“Is God real? How do we know He’s real?” Has your child ever asked you that? 

You know those moments when it feels like chaos has erupted? You feel overwhelmed, tired, and frustrated. There’s defeat in your thoughts. You are shouting out to your children to “Stop that, slow down, be quiet, be kinder to your sister.” 

I was in one of those moments when the Holy Spirit stopped me and said, “Wooo! Kimberly, you represent God to your children. Is this how He responds to you?” That stopped me in my tracks and I’ve been reminding myself about it ever since. 

Your children, will know and understand who God is by what they see in you, in their daddy, and how they are loved and treated. Now no one is perfect. We already know that. All my kids do is argue.  I can’t take it anymore.  I’m tired of dealing with their squabbling and hitting.  They constantly nit-pick each other to the point of full out arguments. They just don’t get along.  It gets so bad that I just blow up and lose my cool.

It’s 5-7 pm. You’ve been with the kids all day or you’re getting home from work. Soon your husband will be getting home from work, too. 

Time to make dinner. Then you’ve got to run one child to hockey or dance or soccer practice. There’s homework to do. You should read with the kids for 15 minutes. They need baths. 

You are tired. Exhausted actually. 

The day has been long and everyone is just a little bit tired, irritable, and whiny. Some call it Arsenic Hour or Witching Hour….that 5-7 pm time frame when children seem to have the most meltdowns.

SELF-CONTROL  How can you help your child choose self-control? And how do you teach them what self-control is?

You can explain it this way:

Self-control is self-discipline. It’s the ability to control yourself and your emotions with all of those feelings, wants and desires inside. Self-control is then how you express or show those emotions in your behavior. Self-control is needed in really happy situations and in difficult situations that make you feel hurt, hungry, angry, or lonely.

We are chatting about lies, wrong beliefs, and words spoken over your children that need to be (1) acknowledged as lies, (2) need to be broken off, and (3) replaced with truth so that your children can have a new, renewed right way of thinking.

If you don’t address the lies that your children are believing and teach them how to acknowledge it as a lie and the value in asking, “What is the truth about this that I should be believing instead?” your children will continue to say, “This is too hard. I can’t do this. I’m not smart enough. I give up. Why keep trying? I’m not good enough. I’m fat. I’m ugly. I don’t like who I am.”

In this episode, I'll share 3 lies your children could be believing (I am afraid, I'll just lie so that I don't get in trouble, and I'm not important) and give you tangible tips for what you can do and scripts of what you can say to your child.

“Math is hard. Why do I have to do this? I just can’t get this.”

“Everyone else is faster than me. I look over at the kid next to me and watch him fill out his paper. And then I look at mine and it’s still empty.”

I hear this from my tutoring students regularly.  I came to realize a long time ago that there was a lot more than just math and reading that they were struggling with.  It’s lies. They are believing lies.

What lie are they holding on to?  What is the truth that they could believe instead and how they can shift their mindset so that they began to believe the truth about themselves, about their school work, and what they are capable of?

Mama, there are lies, wrong beliefs, words spoken over your children that need to be (1) acknowledged as lies, (2) broken off or no longer agreed with, and (3) replaced with truth so that they have a new, renewed right way of thinking.

Do you tell yourself lies? 

No way!  Maybe so.  Yes.  Does it matter?  

What you think and what you tell yourself, whether it’s true or not, affects YOU and your future.  Lives can change or take completely different paths based on what someone thinks, speaks, acts upon and believes.  

Lies will always hold you back and keep you from being the best YOU that you can be.

You can try to cover up a lot of things, but you can’t cover up what comes out of your mouth…what you say. Can you? 

The truth is that your mouth tells what is in your heart, and what is in your heart is going to come out of your mouth. Luke 6:45 

You might cover up or look good on the outside for a little while, but just as soon as you get frustrated or stressed, it comes out of your mouth because it’s in your heart, meaning it’s been in your thoughts.

Strife   Conflict.  We all have it.  It exists in all relationships.  It might be a spat or argument triggered by little things that if not resolved can grow into bigger issues.

Strife is the enemy’s, satan’s subtle tool to set a wedge in your marriage, in your family and in your relationships.  It’s his tool to get in and break them, steal your unity, and even rob you or your loved ones of life and prosperity.

Conflict stinks.  Strife is not worth it.  And today we are talking about how to we can be done with it.

In your marriage and in your home, unity is paramount.  Your goal is oneness, wholeness.  Unity is cooperation and cohesion.  Being solution oriented.  Stronger and safer together.  There is mutual support and protection.

That’s the goal in our marriage and in our home, but when we let strife in, it divides or breaks this unity.

So what do you do when strife comes, when conflict happens, when you just can’t see eye to eye with your spouse or you just can’t persuade that 3 or 13 year old?

When I was a kid, I was sure that my mom had eyes in the back of her head.  She just knew what my sisters and I were up to.  There was no hiding anything from her.  How did she always know?  It boggled me.

Now that I’m a mom to three, I realize that having eyes in the back of my head is a secret mama super power.  After all the moments we spend with our children, we get to know them well!

But I've got to let you in on a secret.  Our children know us, too. In fact, they can see right through us.

You can go ahead and try to hide your mess ups. You can try to cover up your mistakes, but you won’t fool them.

So let’s take responsibility for our actions and be the first to admit, “Oops! I messed up. I got that all wrong.” Let them watch us humble ourselves to make amends, to right wrongs, and to become a better version of ourselves. If we model it in real time, they will follow our example.

Do you like roller coasters?  Up, down, turning to the right, then the left. Which way will it turn next?  The thrill!  The screams.  The belly flops!    

Roller coasters are for amusement park fun.  At home, we don’t want to be roller coaster Mamas.  Up. Down.  Which way is Mama gonna go next? One minute she’s happy, the next minute she’s shouting. Wait for it.  Am I going to get in trouble for spilling my milk?  

Mama, we want to be steady, renewed, whole.

Growing into more and living a little more.  Is that how you would describe your motherhood?  Or are you more like retreating into less or dying a little bit?

Do you find yourself shouting at your children?   You're trying not to yell, but it seems to be the only way they will listen.  

Maybe they shout at you and stomp off which only makes you want to shout back.  Maybe you are frustrated and overwhelmed and something like spilt milk or a lost shoe just sets you off with the feeling of it’s too much.  And you shout.   

Shouting at our kids happens, but that doesn’t make it right or an acceptable way for us to approach our parenting.  Listen in as I share 3 better ways than shouting.

Everyday kids get called out.   "Be quiet.  Sit down.  Slow down.   What are you doing to your sister?   Why can’t you share?"

They get called OUT for what they didn't do right.  How they didn’t fall in line, follow directions, and perform.

I want to challenge you, Renewed Mama to instead, call them UP, not Out.  Call them up to a higher standard.  Call them up to greatness.

Say: "I love you and I see a lot in you. I'm calling you UP.  Thank you for listening when it's time to listen.  Thanks for talking when it's time to talk.  And thank you for putting your hands to work when it's time to get the job done."

As moms, dads, educators, and coaches, we can be intentional about the words we choose to say to our children and students.

We can stop calling them OUT which invites negativity, criticism, and shame.  Instead, we can call them UP to more, to all that they were meant to be, which invites hope, belief, and blessings on their future.
