Week Two: Hurricane Helene Disaster Recovery Lessons Learned

Épisode 102

mercredi 30 octobre 2024Durée 36:46

In this episode, Camille continues her volunteer work with All Hands and Hearts, helping with the disaster relief following hurricane Helene in North and South Carolina.

This week has been eventful, and she eager to share her experiences, even if it leans a bit toward self-reflection. There is value in her insights despite the personal nature of her reflections. Camille's intent is to balance sharing her journey with providing you something meaningful to take away, making this more than just a monologue. She wants to capture the essence of this week, not only for herself but also for anyone tuning in.

Currently, she is on the road, volunteering in North Carolina, having just come from South Carolina. Due to her travel circumstances, the audio quality may not match what you're used to, as she is recording with basic headphones instead of her usual microphone setup.

In this episode, Camille will cover four main topics, with a focus on All Hands and Hearts and the unique experience of volunteering remotely. First, she'll explain what the organization does, which is to provide both immediate relief and long-term rebuilding for communities affected by natural disasters. Founded in 2005, they mobilize volunteers from around the world, even those with no prior construction experience, to assist in disaster-stricken areas, including locations like the Caribbean, Nepal, and the U.S. Their response is swift; in North Carolina, they set up operations just three days after Hurricane Helene.

Next, she will highlight the collaborative approach of All Hands and Hearts, which partners with other organizations and governmental bodies like FEMA. This teamwork enhances the effectiveness of their relief efforts, ensuring that they can mobilize resources and support as needed. Each project site is staffed with experts who guide and train volunteers on the necessary tasks, from safety precautions to using tools properly. This mentorship is crucial for those learning on the job, and it demonstrates the importance of having experienced leaders available.

Lastly, she will connect her volunteering experience to the broader theme of working remotely. While many people focus on specific technical skills when seeking employment, the willingness to learn and adaptability are equally valuable. Just as All Hands and Hearts prioritizes trainable individuals, employers in any field often seek candidates with strong soft skills and a coachable mindset. So, don’t underestimate your potential; you likely possess transferable skills that can be developed further, whether in volunteer work or a remote job.

Day One: Helene Disaster Recovery with Bill Trinkle

Épisode 101

mercredi 23 octobre 2024Durée 38:02

In this episode. Camille introduces us to her friend, Bill Trinkle, in an interview about her upcoming volunteer efforts to assist with the Helene disaster recovery in the Ashville, North Carolins area, and how their mutual ties to that community has brought them together for a few days.

Bill and his wife, Porter, have hosted Camille for a few days so she can gather the rest of the supplies needed and have a day or two to get organized and prepare for her 6-week commitment to the cause. Since they are only a few hours from the ground site, they will be transporting Camille and her belongings to the base camp.

They will talk RVing and remote work, complete with an amusing story, and the more serious ramifications of the disastrous conditions Helene left in her wake. And, as in last week’s episode, Camille will also provide her direct link for donations to All Hands and Hearts, the organization with which Camille is volunteering.

How to Use AI Apply to Create Your Resume in Minutes

Épisode 92

lundi 4 mars 2024Durée 25:01

Join Camille in episode 92 for more AI tool talk.

You're listening to the remote work retirement show. I'm your host, Camille Attell. And this is the only show that helps semi retirees figure out the remote work options.

I believe the remote work is the new retirement plan and that many retirees have both the ability and desire to work, how they want so they can live how they want. Let's dig into today's episode....

In the previous episodes to this one, Camille talked about the applications of AI tools including using them to write your resume and why it’s a good idea. She mentioned the 2 big tools, ChatGPT and Gemini, formerly Bard, that people are using for all kinds of things including resume writing.

In today’s episode she talks about a new AI tool called AI Apply, that she really, really likes and feels is worth discussing. She came across it in one of the updates of an AI network /newsletters she subscribes to for information on AI tools that hit the market daily.

Something about this one caught her eye because it feels very much like the way she trains resume writing in her one-line coaching program, Remote Work School. She is going to discuss how this tool seems to understand the pitfalls of resume writing and how to swim the quicksand of algorithms, robots, key words, and little tricks of the trade to get your resume through the virtual door.

How to use AI to identify your top skills

lundi 26 février 2024Durée 25:37

In episode 91 Camille explores how to use artificial intelligence to identify your top skills.

You're listening to the remote work retirement show. I'm your host, Camille Attell. And this is the only show that helps semi retirees figure out their remote work options.  I believe that remote work is the new retirement plan and that many retirees have both the ability and desire to work how they want so they can live how they want. Let's dig into today's episode.

Welcome back to the Remote Work Retirement Show. if this is your first time listening, no worries. There will be lots of really good information in this episode for you, even if you're just starting. However, if you do want to go back and catch a couple of episodes before this, it might help because Camille does set the tone for the topics she is covering this month.

In the previous episodes she talked about what's happening in the job market and what you can expect, how we're still seeing a pretty strong job market, and how there are new opportunities being created. Then she talked about the reality of using AI to write your resume. There was an article that she explored, that link in last week's episode, Episode 90, that talked about how not only is it a good idea to use AI for your resume, but HR managers and those who hire employees actually prefer it. She talked about why that is in last week's episode.

So, she is not going to cover it all again. Camille also left off in that episode talking about a couple of tools that she wanted to explore and then bring to you in today's episode, as well as next week's episode. So today Camille is actually going to talk about how to use AI to unlock your skills to really identify the top skills that you have so that you can display those skills on your resume, on LinkedIn, maybe in a cover letter, and certainly when you're having an interview.

The idea is that you can very quickly and very easily talk about your top 5 to 10 skills and that you really understand how to swap out your skills when needed for different job types. I talk in Remote Work School, that's my coaching program, a lot to the members there about how it's really important that you're very nimble with your resume, with your skills, LinkedIn, and just your job searching in general. One of the ways to be nimble. Is to have a nice set of skills that you can always pull from and use for different job types.

Join Camille now as she further explores AI and its applications for you.

Here We Go Again: Another Hot Job Market Report

mercredi 7 février 2024Durée 13:00

In episode 89, Camille talks about the hot job market for 2024, including the effect foreign companies are having on our economy and remote job market.

Be prepared to have an enjoyable time without charts and graphs, but a down-to-earth report on how the job market is setting the tone for 2024. Last year Camille predicted the strength of the employment rate. Listen as she talks about how she sources her information and her predictions for this year. She will be discussing this throughout the month of February.

And let’s not forget what she has called the “elephant on the room”: Camille as a singer? Hmm …  And even though the subjects she brings to the podcast are serious and important, affecting all of us, she has decided to take a slightly more light-hearted approach this year, loosening up and letting her awesome personality show through.

So, music references, some singing, and what made the January job market so unexpectedly hot. Enjoy.
