MLS Refs are locked out! Learn why from Peter Manikowski, President of the PRSA27 Jan 202400:30:55

Send us a text

I had the honor and privilege to interview Peter Manokski, President of the PRSA.

The PRSA is the Professional Referee Organizing body that represents MLS, USL, NWSL and CSA Referees. Recently, their membership has unanimously voted to authorize a strike if a deal is not made with PRO, their employer that represents the MLS.

They are working to improve the working conditions for the referees. Many people have no idea the mental and physical burden of what it takes to be a professional referee. Especially, beyond the top of the top center referees, almost every other official is doing this as a part time job. The strain on them physically, financially and emotionally can be brutal for the many years it takes to make it to the top.

I hope you enjoy this conversation and we would appreciate it if you will share it as far and wide as you can.

Thank you!

By discussing this and sharing this story, I hope we can all get stronger together.

Futsal vs Football and is being a referee a full time job?10 Dec 202300:34:47

Send us a text

I had so much fun yesterday reffing Futsal. It is similar in some ways to reffing soccer, but extremely fast paced and with some very unique rules. Although I had done it before, it has been a few years and there was quite a learning curve. If we want to speed up the game of soccer, we could learn a thing or two from our Futsal friends. It was non-stop action.

I also will answer a letter from the mail bag about how reffing plays into my financial stability. It's not a full time job for me or 99% of referees, but it is a nice source of supplemental income.

Additionally, I want to share the worst phrase you can say to me in Pre-game. It is almost always an indicator of a difficult match ahead.

Lastly, we'll hit the mail bag. I got a doozy this week! ;->

It's time for transparency and openness. It kills me to hear all of the criticism of our fellow professional referees. I know people will say that they get paid well enough and that is part of the territory, but when pro refs look bad, it makes all refs look bad. This week, we'll take a look back at some of the most controversial calls of the first few weeks.

I just spent 2 days reffing at a local summer tournament. I enjoyed myself, made a great call and an iffy call, but there were also a few things that irked me.

I had the honor and privilege of speaking at the National Association for Women's Gymnastics Judges in Grand Rapids, Michigan this past weekend. It was their 50th anniversary and an all around amazing event.

I spoke about referee / judge abuse, why it happens and how to potentially deal with it. The message was well received and I hope I was able to set them on a positive path forward. I hope I get to work with this organization and many others again in the future.

The pros and cons of "Comms"and working with new refs22 Apr 202300:20:12

Using comms is so much fun!!! I wish everyone had the opportunity to do it. There are good reasons why pros use them every game. I totally understand the counter argument that it can affect your signals and normal unaided communication, but the pros outweigh the cons for me. We'll discuss that and more in today's episode.

Exercise Science and Research: Insights, Agility, and Mechanics with Will Reed25 Jul 202400:45:43

Send us a text

Unlock the secrets to mastering the art of officiating in soccer as we talk to Will Reed, a referee and exercise science researcher. Will's journey into the world of refereeing began in north Atlanta, inspired by his professor Kevin Hewitt. From youth games to high-stakes academy and UPSL matches, Will shares his passion for staying connected to the game, mentoring young players, and the undeniable physical and emotional rewards of being a referee. This episode is packed with Will’s insights on his path to regional certification and his groundbreaking research into assistant referee performance.

Ever wondered how the fitness demands on referees compare to those on players? Will’s research reveals fascinating data on the distances covered by referees, particularly assistant referees, and questions the effectiveness of FIFA’s current fitness tests. We explore the unique challenges assistant referees face, such as maintaining offside lines while carrying a flag, and how these factors may impact their overall performance. Will’s candid take on the frustrations with existing fitness protocols offers a fresh perspective on how we measure referees' on-field effectiveness.

Our conversation takes a deep dive into the impact of holding a flag on sprint performance. Contrary to initial beliefs, holding a flag can sometimes result in better agility, but generally, it hampers top speed and power production. Will discusses the need for specialized training to mitigate these effects and the importance of simulating match conditions in workout routines. This episode underscores the critical role of fitness and confidence for referees at all levels, offering valuable resources like Scorch Fitness and the Running Ref Program to help officials maintain peak performance and reduce dropout rates. Whether you're a seasoned referee or just starting out, this episode provides indispensable advice and inspiration to elevate your game.

Why I love being a referee16 Jan 202300:21:43

It's a hard job. I think that's why I love it so much. The mental and physical challenges motivate me. I actually like that fact that is impossible to be perfect on the pitch. You can always improve. I also like that it's a job most people can't or won't do. It's an elite club or committed and passionate people who love the game of football. These are just some of the reasons why I love it.

Be like a goldfish30 Oct 202200:08:40

There is a great scene in a Ted Lasso episode, when Ted tells one of his players to "be like a gold fish." The gold fish is the happiest animal on earth per Ted, because it has a very short memory. If something bad happens, they forget about in 10 seconds or less. Sometimes, as a referee, we also need to be like a gold fish.

I get nervous because I care. If I didn't care, I wouldn't feel anything.

The important thing is that we have perspective about what is driving those nerves and how to channel them into a positive experience on the pitch.

Join us on this deep dive into the financial realities of officiating, where we pull back the curtain on referee compensation across various levels of youth soccer. From the challenges of gathering transparent pay data to personal stories from my own refereeing journey, we discuss how the pay scales fluctuate dramatically between recreational and competitive matches. A valuable listen for both young folks seeking their first job and adults considering refereeing as a side gig, this episode shines a spotlight on the often murky waters of referee pay.

Did you know that the cost of living significantly affects referee pay rates? We uncover how rural referees in Utah are compensated compared to their urban counterparts in New York City. Get a glimpse into the lucrative rates youth referees can earn in high-cost areas, and discover an innovative bonus structure from a Virginia club designed to encourage more game participation and mentoring. Additionally, we break down the complexities of high school refereeing in Georgia, including mileage reimbursements and the personal fulfillment that comes with officiating high school games.

Refereeing isn't just about blowing the whistle—it involves significant financial and logistical challenges. From certification fees and equipment costs to the financial demands of advancing in one's refereeing career, we dive into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to officiate at various levels, including college and adult leagues. We also explore the less glamorous side of professional refereeing, highlighting how even top-tier referees in leagues like the MLS often need supplementary income due to modest salaries. Finally, we lighten things up with a humorous look at the common phrases referees hear and offer tips on handling criticism with grace and humor, making the referee experience rewarding both on and off the pitch.
