E72 - Dr. Suzy Pinnick Explores Pediatric Palliative Pot (Re-Hash)26 Nov 202400:41:03

Dr. Suzy Pinnick, a family physician specializing in palliative medicine and remote northern medicine, shares her cannabis story with Kirk. In this episode, the two health professionals sit in a casual masked conversation within the warmth of the NIC’s office of a northern nursing station during a deep Covid19 Canadian winter evening. She is quick to say she has very little knowledge of cannabis, yet believes it is important to learn. When she was asked by parents to prescribe cannabis for one of her pediatric palliative care patients, Dr. Pinnick quickly recognized how little she knew. Kirk brings the story to Trevor, how this experienced doctor is willing to learn as she practices; how she learns the art of medicine while applying the formal duties of a doctor.

E135 – Shiva Dances within Buddha’s Garden19 Nov 202401:17:19

Regular users of cannabis will – often self-consciously – admit to having a spiritual relationship with cannabis. Will Johnson, a teacher of Buddhist Dharma since 1972, explains how he is ‘something of an anomaly and outlier when it comes to the use of cannabis.’ In his book “Cannabis in Spiritual Practice: The Ecstasy of Shiva, The Calm of Buddha,” Will applies his understandings with living by The Buddhist’s precepts, as an adult. He believes his positive pathways toward full Embodiment is better achieved when he weaves his dance with Shiva, while enjoying the fruits of Buddha’s Garden. In this episode, Kirk and Trevor conclude Will may be onto something. What if everyone in the world simply took a few deep breathes, passed the chillum, and spontaneously started to dance?

What if…

E85 - Cannabis for Headbangers with Dr. Patrick Neary (Re-Hash)10 Sep 202401:11:54

You’ve said the word concussion. You might even have had one. But do you really understand them? Did you know a concussion is a minor traumatic brain injury? Dr. Patrick Neary and his team got a grant from the NFL to study if cannabis can help prevent or treat concussions! Dr. Neary explains, you don’t have to actually bang your head to get a concussion. We’ve often said you don’t have to like cannabis to enjoy this podcast. But, if you listen to this episode while rhythmically shaking your mullet forwards and back, we think you’ll elevate your knowledge about both.

E130 - Healing Communities the Fourth - Compassion in Action04 Sep 202400:56:04

Kirk catches up with Ted Smith from the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club and his organization’s ill-defined existence within a country of legalized cannabis. We hear how Ted’s dreams, for this timeworn cannabis compassion club, are close to fruition yet there lingers potential for a new set of fines and a visit from the Public Health Authority impeding the full potential of this caring organization. In this episode we learn how the clouds preventing Ted from flying high are not simply from his new smoking lounge but rather the various levels of bureaucracy he must manage when putting compassion into action.

E41 Weed Rather Be Working12 Dec 2019
Kirk and Trevor discuss cannabis-related workplace issues with the world’s largest advocacy group for small businesses. After one year of legalization, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) surveyed their 110,000 members discovering 10,000 Canadian small business owners have confronted cannabis-related issues. As the discussion digs deep into the survey numbers we learn much of the hype promoted before legalization did not materialize yet, small business owners are still dealing with employees smelling of cannabis, poor government-offered educational opportunities, and defining impairment. Ryan Mallough, the director of Provincial Affairs for Ontario, explains how CFIB normally lobbies government for better taxes, laws, regulations, and how his organization has become the primary source of cannabis education for many of their members. E83 - Are the Cardiovascular Effects Worth the High - with Dr. Venkat Subramaniam (Re-Hash)27 Aug 202400:53:28

Most certainly, we have learned Cannabis has benefits but it is not benign. With all medications it is important to understand the risk and benefits. In this episode Trevor and Kirk discuss the cardiovascular effects of chronic cannabis inhalation with an accomplished student of medicine, Dr. Venkat Subramaniam. Although, he admits limited studies are available, his literature review suggests those who start smoking cannabis at a young age, making it a daily indulgence, are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. He makes it easy by comparing cannabis to donuts; reminding us we must consume in moderation.

Kieley is not a health care professional, but is extremely well read and knowledgeable. Kieley educates Trevor on topicals, suppositories and many other uses of cannabis especially as it pertains to female sexual health. This episode is in no way graphic but it does acknowledge the existence of sex, so if you are listening with people with sensitive ears be aware. E129 - Aldwin Anterola & CHS20 Aug 202400:54:12

You’ve got a PhD with lots of lab and testing experience. It should be easy to start a cannabis testing lab, right? Well, not really. Aldwin Anterola found cannabis growers weren’t always interested in finding the accurate amount of cannabinoids like THC in their products, among other problems. So, Aldwin went back to school. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) have an entrepreneurship program to help scientists learn how to bring their skills and products to market. Along the way, Aldwin learned a lot about Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) and even interviewed our co-host Trevor as part of his NIH entrepreneurship program project.

S3E08 Pastors, Pot, And Prophets30 May 2019
Did Jesus die on the cross? Was Moses influenced by cannabis when speaking to the Lord? Are Christian Churches embracing Cannabis? First up we meet the founding member of Christian Cannabis, Craig Gross. Once known as the “Porn Pastor,” Gross has a new message for Christian leaders. We learn how cannabis facilitated his personal journey and how he came to a cross roads. Gross once focused on helping porn-addicted Christians kick their habit. Now he is focused on how Christians can be healed by this ancient plant. Next we explore the origins of cannabis. Researcher Chris Bennett connects cannabis to world religion and how it spread from one culture to another. He speaks to how biblical Prophets, Knights Templars, and the Messiah himself, were connected to cannabis by reframing our trusted biblical stories. Bennett says cannabis has been part of human history from the beginning. The legalization of cannabis demands philosophical discussions and these two guests bring a deep conversion to what may be our most controversial episode yet. S3E05 Healing Communities Part 220 Apr 2019
In Part 2 Kirk leaves Vancouver Island and visits Gimli, Manitoba. He discovers how a family doctor becomes a Cannabis consultant. Dr. Shelley Turner (@TheShelleyT) discusses how a deep interest in addictions directed her practice toward Cannabis. Her new clinic, Ekosi, will teach patients and professionals alike to discover the harm reduction benefit of Cannabis. Dr. Turner's journey with her Cree and Settler heritage, her progression from ambulance driver to nurse to doctor is fascinating enough on its own. But her passion for data, evidence and her patients in all things cannabis is something you'll want to hear. From Newleaf Outreach and Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club in Part 1 to Ekosi in Part 2, the common thread in these three stories is how healing communities are people caring for each other. Is Cannabis an exit drug? Should peers and individuals direct their own Health Care? How can western medicine help with creating healing communities? Kirk and Trevor discuss these questions and offer up some canna-curious opinions. Music by Chocolate Bunnies from Hell (@Chocbunnieshell)
S3E04 Healing Communities Part 111 Apr 2019
Travel with Kirk and Trevor beyond simple harm reduction strategies. Kirk brings us stories from Vancouver Island to Gimli, showing us how the Cannabis Culture helps people be well. In Part 1, we meet Kevin Donnelly from Newleaf Outreach (https://newleafoutreach.org/). This new autonomous peer driven harm reduction group in Nanaimo, British Columbia promotes that drug peoples’ rights are human rights. They also believe cannabis plays a role for people with substance use disorders. Then Kirk goes south to see Julia Veintrop from the Victoria Cannabis Buyers’ Club (https://vcbc.live/). The VCBC is an important historic advocacy agency. They've taken cannabis cases to the Supreme Court, but more importantly they have 23 years of experience assisting people with accessing affordable cannabis as their medicine. From new to established, Vancouver Island shows us the strength of peers helping peers. We have a My Cannabis Story from Char about a not so positive experience at a Guns N Roses concert. Come back for Part 2! Gimli has more to offer than Crown Royal and the Icelandic Festival.

S2E09 Hemp Hemp Hooray!12 Jan 2019
What's the difference between hemp and marijuana? What's up with all these "hemp derived CBD's"? Kirk and Trevor talk to hemp pioneer Martin Moravcik, and hemp farmers Don Dewar and Chris Federowich. Martin has been a hemp promoter since the early 1990's. Chris and Don grow hemp on a large scale today and Chris is the Vice-Chair of Parkland Industrial Hemp Growers. Hemp can provide fiber for textiles, food and maybe medicine. There is a lot of interest in getting CBD's from hemp, but it isn't as easy as you would think to scale up to a farm sized plot of hemp. Clare McBride, also a farmer, works at the office of the Parkland Industrial Hemp Growers. She updates us on the latest hemp regulations including what types of plants Health Canada will allow. Kirk likes to say he goes for bike rides south of Dauphin just to smell the hemp fields. Come jump on your bike for a warm summer evening ride. You are passing acres and acres of tall green plants as Kirk and Trevor chat in your ear... This episode sponsor is strainprint.ca. Brad Pattison of Brad Pattison Pet Wellness (www.bradpattisonpetwellness.ca)stops cats from launching aerial attacks on their owners. Dr. Brent Guppy of Synthase Genetics (synthasegenetics.com) can help producers identify the genes to make better cannabis strains. She also gets into pesticide testing and micro-contaminants like lead. Ever wondered about the alphabet soup of regulations like the MMAR, ACMPR and how they came to be? Mike Boivin, pharmacist and designer of cannabis continuing education programs, gives us a great history lesson on the lawsuits that got us from 2001 to 2018. He talks about how proper use of medical cannabis can reduce polypharmacy and clinical pearls like if a medical patient feels high all the time on their cannabis try something different like a new strain or dose. As an extra bonus, if you live in the Winnipeg area....go see Reefer Madness the Musical Dec 6-16, 2018! S2E05 The Endocannabinoid Researcher08 Nov 2018
What is the endocannabinoid system? Did you have that friend in high school with the hemp shirt who told you, "The body was designed to smoke pot, man!" That is not as crazy as it sounds. Trevor and Kirk talk to Dr. Robert Laprairie. He is a pharmacologist who studies the endocannabinoid system. Your body produces its own cannabinoids and has receptors that can accept external cannabinoids like THC and CBD. But just because cannabis is natural doesn't mean it shouldn't be used with caution. Dr. Laprairie also discusses interactions with prescription medications and other thing to watch for. But in general Dr. Laprairie is very positive about cannabis research in a post-legalization Canada!

S2E03 Addictions And Economics10 Oct 2018

Are we addicted to taxes? Trevor and Kirk talk to Dr. Jason Childs. He is an economist who says whether you want to reduce harm from cannabis or increase government coffers then keep taxes on cannabis low. In fact, having the government subsidize licensed producers might be a brilliant idea. In part 2 we have Dr. Jonathon Stea. He is a psychologist who has studied and treated cannabis addiction. Surprisingly, cannabis is probably going to be both worse and better than you imagine post legalization.
