Equinox Healing & Letting Go25 Sep 202400:58:54

A seasonal shift is underway: the Autumn Equinox teaches us lessons about preparing, slowing down, letting go, and healing. This year’s Equinox lines up with my own healing journey. In this podcast episode, I talk about the last few months navigating life post-miscarriage, including coming to terms with a body that isn’t fully healed. We will talk through the rare uterine scarring condition called Asherman Syndrome and what it means to do battle where you can, and let everything else go. We’ll also discuss my spiritual and ancestral connections throughout this entire process.

Holy Wells & Sacred Sites18 Sep 202400:55:09

How can we return to the land, to our land-based, indigenous practices, when those practices were coopted, covered, and hidden from view through colonization? This week, I’ll take us on a little trip to a holy well in Ireland to discuss ancient practices, sacred sites, and how to seek clues to the practices our ancestors left us. Many land-based practices have been coopted by colonizers and empires, and the truth of our connection to land, spirit, ancestors, and healing lie just below the surface.

We’ll discuss the St. Michael’s Well, its fascinating healing properties, and its ancient history on the land and to healing the people long before Christians arrived and re-named it after a saint. The well’s story reveals its true roots: connection to land, understanding the healing power of earth and water, and reverence for pilgrimage to a sacred site.

Shaman Sh*t11 Sep 202400:47:38

What makes someone a shaman, healer, or medicine person? Can you become one with a course, a certificate, or an instagram handle? In traditional cultures, people study medicine and healing for decades before holding themselves out as healers to their communities. Let’s talk about the modern obsession with influencers and shamans and what it means to really serve a community. We’ll also discuss the responsibilities of healers, including a deep commitment to their patients/clients and need to have a strong ethical and moral practice. I’ll also dive into why shamans and healers aren’t necessarily automatically good people and we must understand a practitioner's teachers, practice, community, knowledge, and experience before we put our trust into them.

Decolonizing and Re-indiginizing21 Aug 202400:47:30

Today’s a big one, guys. And it may be tough to take. But it is important. We’re going to talk about who is a settler, an immigrant, a colonizer, and more. Whose duty is it to decolonize? What it means to decolonize and re-indignize as an indigenous person, as a settler (of any background/race/ethnicity), and as a white person. What are the generational impacts of colonization, imperialism, and capitalism? What is internalized colonialism/imperialism/capitalism? And what can we do to deprogram? What does repair look like? All are welcome on Turtle Island, but colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism are not!

Spiritual Escapism and Bypassing14 Aug 202400:31:27

This week’s episode is a little chat on a big problem: spiritual escapism and bypassing. Too many spiritual and wellness spaces deny the inherent truth that the spiritual and physical worlds are inseparable. “Spiritual" spaces that espouse love, light, and high vibes deny or avoid the plain realities of our physical world, allowing their followers and adherents to avoid confronting or reconciling with the pain they inflict or benefit from in the physical world while seeking “spiritual” enlightenment. Connection to spirit and ancestors would never allow us to bypass our sacred duties to our relatives - human, animal, plant, environmental - in the physical world. Spiritual escapism and bypassing is a colonial construct that promises privileged individuals in the global minority the ability to dispense with their sacred duties while cosplaying a connection to spirit: to take, extract, and exploit without repercussion.

Community is Medicine and Relationships are Messy11 Dec 202400:30:18

Everyone is talking about community building but few acknowledge the challenges of actually doing it! Community means nurturing relationships with people - real people - who have diverse beliefs, values, personalities, abilities, and needs. Relationships can be hard and messy. In this episode, we talk about what it looks like to build community in a colonized world.

Our Sacred Duty as Storykeepers07 Aug 202400:58:12

Our sacred duty as storykeepers is to hear, hold, and pass on even the most difficult of stories. The more difficult the story, the more sacred is the duty. Today, I’ll talk about how stories, especially those of pain and trauma, are often weaponized against us, to manipulate us in campaigns and elections. But if we return to our sacred duty to hold and pass along the most difficult of stories, we will honor the story and be less vulnerable to manipulation. It is also important to allow ourselves to be changed by these stories, and to then transmute the pain of those stories into action.

I will go into specific topics where it is important to bear witness and hold the most painful and traumatic stories. And I will share my own approach to holding, honoring, and passing along difficult stories.

Dark Side of the Moon31 Jul 202400:45:04

On today’s episode, I’ll dive into my 2+ year journey (and still going) into darkness as a place of healing, development, and spiritual and emotional transformation. I’ll discuss deprogramming and discarding the stigma of darkness as a place of depression or difficulty or evil, and shedding the false dichotomy of darkness vs. light.

My darkness season, my winter season, my new moon season: this has been, and continues to be, a phase to go inward, reflect, and re-form into something new. It has been a safe wombspace, a cozy cocoon to hold me, teach me, and prepare me for sitting with grief, sadness, and anger in the some of the most difficult times of my adult life. It has been a place of literal darkness that allows me to discharge fear around connecting with spirit and ancestors. It has been a place of reflection that pushes me to embrace an evolving world view and understanding of how to move forward in right relation.

Stories as Medicine24 Jul 202400:38:15

Stories are a powerful and ancient medicine. We have been transmitting and receiving stories since the begining of time for a multitude of healing reasons: to celebrate and memorialize great success, to transmute pain, to heal, to laugh, to show care and support for others. Holding another’s stories is a radical act of love and kindness, a radical act of care in a world that leaves the grieving, displaced, and oppressed behind. Stories require community and build community. By coming into communion with another’s story, we form an indelible bond with them.

I will also share my history with stories as medicine, which began with stories, books, reading, and then music, lyrics, and poetry. Later, I embraced languages as both a tool for communication and storytelling, and also a story in and of themselves that reflect the people who speak them and pass them along.

Thank you for joining me today on this discussion about stories as medicine. I’d love to hear what your experience with stories and storytelling is. Do you dance, sing, sign, write, or serve as the keeper of your family’s history? What do stories mean to you?

Trance & Transmission: Entering Ceremony with Spirit & Ancestors10 Jul 202400:59:19

Today, we delve into the world of trance and transmission. Of relating to, communicating with, being in community with, and communicating with spirit and ancestors. Of different states of being, of different realms, of different physical, spiritual, and energetic ways of being. Of the importance of setting boundaries to protect ourselves.

I share my own experiences with the dreamtime, repeating dream themes, prophetic and predictive dreams, unwanted visitors, visions, shapeshifting, and ceremonies through journeying. I also discuss my opinion on using drugs or medicines to alter our consciousness and enter other states. I also touch on the ways to interact with spirit, to receive, and send transmission, that do not involve altered states or journeys.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of Trance & Transmissions in next week’s episode!

Return to the Land: Connection & Communion03 Jul 202401:04:29

A call to return to the land, to find connection and communion. A prayer whispered out into the sky, a wish, a dream, a hope for everyone to rediscover their innate relationship with the spirit of the land and all our environmental kin: oceans, lakes, rivers, storms, earth, forests, prairies, mycelia, animals, weather, and all their unique kin relationships across varied ecosystems. To let our kin teach us, show us, and re-ignite the spark within us to act in reciprocity and right relation.

I’ll dive into why it’s meaningful and important to connect to the land and some of the innumerable ways to find connection and communion, including some of my own. I would love to hear from you about how you connect to the land.

Grief & Miscarriage: Story Medicine for Pregnancy Loss26 Jun 202400:53:38

Story medicine for grieving and healing hearts. This episode dives into the grief that accompanies pregnancy loss. I open up about my own miscarriage, sharing the practical events, how I navigated (am navigating) emotions, and how I have connected to my baby and ancestors spiritually throughout the pregnancy and loss.

Losing a pregnancy is a unique kind of loss, traumatic physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The taboo around speaking about miscarriage can make it lonely and isolating and the lack of support in our modern world for people experiencing pregnancy loss means we are pushed to “return to normal”, working and caring for others while still healing our bodies and hearts. This episode is a call for society and community shifts toward support and care. It is a reminder that death and passing is a time when spirit draws near, and while hard, a chance to lean ever closer to our spirit and ancestor connections to honor, cope, and grieve.

Grief & Death: Story Medicine for Losing a Parent19 Jun 202400:54:45

Story medicine for grieving and healing hearts. Losing a parent is one of the most difficult experiences we can go through as deeply emotional beings. Death and grief are challenging in and of themselves, but can sometimes feel overwhelming in a world organized around productivity and individualism.

In this episode, I share my experience of losing my father, slowly to dementia, and then suddenly when he passed; and the struggles of grieving both kinds of loss. I share my personal spiritual experiences and connections with ancestors while going through this process, and the kinds of rituals and ceremonies I held to commemorate this transitional period and honor my father. It is a reminder that our society prevents and precludes really talking about and grieving death, and how we don't have adequate support systems in place for grieving people. This episode is a call for society and community shifts toward support and care. It is a reminder that death is a time when spirit draws near, and while hard, a chance to lean ever closer to our spirit and ancestor connections to honor, cope, and grieve.

The Awakening05 Jun 202400:49:58

Languages are more than just words, they are a reflection of and medium for sharing a world view. Many traditional indigenous languages of Turtle Island (USA) reflect a worldview of animacy and aliveness. This is true for the Bodewadmi (Potawatomi) language. This episode is about how learning my traditional ancestral language opened my world to aliveness, spirit, and connection to ancestors and "all my relations" (ndenwemagnek).

Ponderings on Past Lives, Rebirth, and Reincarnation27 Nov 202401:00:26

Let’s talk rebirth! This week we dive into past lives, including what it means to be closer to spirit or “the veil" as a child (who remembers their past life) and my hypothesis for why our human condition filters out past lives as we get older. I share my own past life memory and what I’ve learned about how I carry intergenerational and, potentially, inter-life trauma. Lastly, I’ll discuss the pitfalls of focusing on past lives to the detriment of being present with our current selves.

Sacred Flow: Reconnecting with the Moon Time13 Nov 202400:48:43

Let’s talk about our connection to our bodies, the monthly cycle, and our bleed or moon time. I share a major milestone in my healing journey, how I’ve been reconnecting with my cycle and bleed, and share about the first time I got a period. We’ll discuss how colonization has robbed us of the beauty and power inherent in our cycle and bleed, and dig into how to reconnect to our traditions and practices surrounding the moon time.
