E12 - Zen Mind, Healing Body: How Alex Greene Integrates Eastern Wisdom into Trauma Healing23 Jun 202300:40:13

In this episode of the Red Beard Embodiment Podcast, host Alex Greene shares his personal journey and how his background with Zen meditation has influenced his work as a bodyworker and trauma therapist.

Alex's transformative journey, which he explores in this episode, highlights the connections between Zen, bodywork, and trauma therapy.

- At the age of 19, Alex questioned the limitations of his intellectual pursuits and turned to his father, who was deeply involved in Zen training, for guidance. Encouraged by his father, Alex spent a summer in Hawaii immersing himself in Zen meditation and martial arts training, which had a profound impact on him. After graduating from college, he went on to complete a 3-year formal monastic training at the same temple in Hawaii.

- During his Zen training, Alex underwent rigorous physical training, emphasizing the development of a centered and integrated body.

- Within Alex's Zen community, he encountered William ‘Dub’ Leigh, a bodyworker who integrated Zen principles into his practice. Dub's approach, known as Zen Bodytherapy, combined various techniques with Zen meditation and an understanding of Ki (vital energy). This encounter deeply influenced Alex's perspective on the body-mind connection. Alex realized the potential of integrating embodiment practices into trauma therapy.

- A chance encounter with Everett Ogawa, a master bodyworker and one of Dub’s primary students, further shaped Alex's path. Under Everett's guidance, Alex learned Zen bodywork, discovering the value of these practices in stripping away tension patterns and opening a door to deep connection with the body.

- As Alex delved deeper into his bodywork training, he recognized the synergy between Zen and martial arts principles and therapeutic practices. He seamlessly integrates a Zen approach to his work, infusing each session with presence, concentration, and a commitment to becoming one with the client and the therapeutic process.

Central to Alex's approach is the therapeutic relationship itself, characterized by this ‘becoming one with’ via the co-regulation of nervous systems. Drawing from Zen teachings, he views this connection as an opportunity to show up for his clients in the deepest sense, creating an environment for growth and change.

E11 - White Noise, Brown Trauma: A Story of Awakening ft. Ro Shore21 Jun 202301:28:47

In this episode, Alex interviews Ro Shore, a spiritual coach, author and founder of Northwest Wisdom, a nonprofit center for healing and embodied spirituality. Ro shares his personal journey of growth, healing, and his upcoming book release.

Raised as an adopted child from Calcutta in a predominantly White community in Oregon, Ro faced challenges in navigating his identity as a person of color. He explored spirituality beyond his Christian upbringing, delving into Eastern philosophies.

Ro's narrative takes a dramatic turn as he recounts his experience of being incarcerated in a predominantly White prison. He faced overt racism, isolation, and the presence of white supremacists and neo-Nazis, intensifying the hostile atmosphere.

In prison, Ro began to explore meditation in a deep way, discovering the connection between his physical sensations and his spirituality and psychology. He learned to sit with his feelings and uncover deeper layers of hidden grief, shame, and sadness.

In late 2022, several years after his release from prison, Ro felt it was time to share his story, leading him to write his book, "The Wisdom of My Body: Healing Brown Trauma in a White Prison through Meditation and Spiritual Embodiment." The memoir explores his journey through incarceration, healing from racial trauma, and the transformative power of meditation and spiritual embodiment.

It serves as a testament to resilience and the potential for growth and healing in challenging circumstances.

Ro Shore continues his work as a spiritual coach and runs Northwest Wisdom, offering spiritual counseling, coaching, reiki, and one-on-one yoga instruction provided by his wife.

You can find him on instagram @Northwest_Wisdom, or contact him through his websitewww.northwestwisdom.org

Ro is offering online spiritual counseling and reiki sessions for 50% off their first session to those who mention the Red Beard Embodiment Podcast.

E10 - A Journey into Somatic Trauma Work with Alex Greene15 Jun 202300:54:35

In today's episode, join us on a journey with host Alex Greene as he shares his experiences and insights into somatic trauma work.

Alex's fascination with trauma work began during his study of Structural Integration Bodywork, where he discovered the potential of using the body as a gateway to address psycho-emotional history and trauma. Through deep tissue approaches, he not only improved musculoskeletal alignment but also facilitated emotional release and self-awareness.

Delving further, Alex explored trauma from a neurobiological perspective during the "neurobiological revolution." Groundbreaking theories such as the Polyvagal Theory and the works of Peter Levine and Dr. David Berceli provided new insights into the role of the nervous system in trauma. This led Alex to discover the transformative potential of neurogenic tremors and the therapeutic technique of TRE (Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises).

In his practice, Alex integrates various modalities to offer a holistic approach to trauma therapy. Zen Integration Bodywork and Somatic Coaching combine hands-on bodywork techniques like Structural Integration, Myofascial Release, and Zero Balancing with non-hands-on approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe). Through this synthesis, Alex aims to support individuals in their healing journey, promoting healing, release of tension, regulation of the nervous system, and fostering secure attachments and resilience.

Drawing from his Zen practice and trauma education, Alex integrates mindfulness, presence, and non-judgment into his therapeutic approach, allowing clients to deepen their connection with their inner selves, develop self-awareness, and tap into their innate wisdom and resilience.
